The first is that the oil actually absorbs heat quite well and, likewise, it retains it just as effectively. So when you take glowing iron to it, you're left with a jug of extremely hot oil. Steam doesn't escape it nor does it show any outward signs of being hot—which is why you stuck your finger in it, like a fool.
So, this is something which could actually be pretty useful for us if we want to set up searing oil traps as part of the Disclosure. Not exactly what was desired (fire-resistant equipment), but an interesting alternative result.
You stare at the cat ears twitching on the end of Sagaseeker's head—his saemd in action.

Sagaseeker stares back as his virthing-tail twitches behind him.

You sigh. "I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't that."

"A lesson learned then, meowther-mine." Sagaseeker snickers as you groan, his frami-fur rippling with every laugh.
Sagaseeker has such CUTE Aspects.

And he likes naps like a cat, lol.
...When, not if, times next go lean in the Hading Valley, this will make certain your family survives to see the next summer.
Ominous. Famine plotline be coming up in the future.

Imagine burning 3 Odr for Food because times are lean.. that would suck.

Ominous. Famine plotline be coming up in the future.

Yeah, we need to store up some food.

Imagine burning 3 Odr for Food because times are lean.. that would suck.

I dunno if that's a flat cost every time, though it might be. We'll see how that works. We may also be able to substitute alternatives...I've got a Research action planned next turn to try the healing water on our fields in there.

Can we store food in our Fylgja (in a doesn't perish kinda way), or in our Soulscape? I suspect 'no', but it would be good to know why no.

I don't think that theres anything stopping us from killing a cow, stabbing it with a Meat-Keeping Stick, and then lobbing it in our Fylgja or Soulscape. No clue how we would do it for fruit and veg, but still, we can live a while off of a cow.

So with Sagaseeker knowing how to stoke their aspects, do they now give 49+49 Orthsirr in a fight? A big deal if so.

A Hearthroot seed has taken root in a patch of soil. It now bears 1/3 berries, which regrow every year. 4/4 oil-slick fronds grow from the center stem — which regrows every year. In the middle of the fronds is a single seed. It has been fed 18 Odr and seems to be sated, though it would not refuse more if offered.

A sealwood sapling has been planted. It has now grown to the size of a proper, adult tree. 7/7 of the branches bear the waxy leaves. If you so desired, you can now extract sealwood sap from the trunk. A single seed hangs from one of the branches. It has been fed 18 Odr and seems to be sated, though it would not refuse more if offered.
So, we've hit the final evolution of our plants, but we can still give them more Odr if we were so inclined. Not sure what the result of doing so, would be, though. We would probably need 12 Odr to find out?

Also they each have a single seed - something that seems to be a commonality between Soulscape plants at Stage 3. We should harvest those seeds and see if they regrow.

Dumb After Midnight Thoughts: How much fame would Halla/her line get for inventing the Turducken (any animal version) and getting it accepted as a cultural milestone -> eventual tradition? Especially since Hold Heat and Tenderize Roast can definitely help out there.

And Halla literally got a bonus from eating breadsticks so good food does do something at least.

Plus, the Norse do love their elaborate feasts so sticking animals inside ine another should be easy enough with the hard part making it taste delicious as a while greater than the sum of its parts.

interesting, many revelations in this update....
Turns out, your fire resistance doesn't protect you from having your finger's flesh burnt off by a pot of stupidly hot oil. As a side-note, Time Heals All Wounds is a good spell.
*Takes notes* This makes me want to get ripple(water magic) iron for our armor even more, and a socket stone to ad a protection/dispersal effect to it, like, "Only the wound thaw my flow on this armor" so we are not drenched by liquids of anything...
Also, this gives us a nice tactic against fire resistant enemies. Just boil them alive.
Anyways, the second thing you learned is that while the blood-quenched length of iron was simply a bit more responsive in your hand, in your children's hands it was like they were swinging a sword underwater.
hm...
So, drenching stuff in the wielder's blood makes a personal lock....
Would drenching it in ours and Abjorn's mixed blood make that personal lock into a bloodline one?
Interesting, and worth of note, but not something actionable, for now.
.... Kinda sad we didn't try the healing waters though.... same with the brewing.
Steinarr squints at the seeds as he rolls them around in his palm—his brows shooting high on his head. "I've never seen these particular seeds before, but I've seen more than my fair share of evil plants while I was stationed in Cyprus. You say you got them from that fireball from a few years back?"
hm... So, Cyprus was infested with evil plants, huh?
Man, Steinarr's adventures must have been whacky.
"Probably steals the life from other living things, if I had to make a guess. That's a pretty common theme with evil plants." He pauses as a thought occurs to him. He fixes you with a side-eye. "You're... not planning on planting these, are you? Because if you are, you should do it somewhere far, far away from here. Just in case I need crack open the ol' Botanical Society of Constantinople Special."
hm... This does mean Steinarr has books. Or, at least, a book.
@Imperial Fister , did Halla knew Steinarr has at least one book?
More importantly, what would we need to read them? An AP? or can it be part of training?
Can we use them to furthger study books? Without harming them, ofc...
And... what language are they written in?

CUTE!!! LOL
Also, should we teach eyespeak to our catboy? And what other things...oh.
Orthstirr can be manipulated as temporary constructs, which can be moved by more orthstirr...
He could make a bowl to apply blood or paint to his own runes... AND could make stick limbs to move on his own as well!!!
Tryggr laughs as he ducks under a rock guided by your will. He snatches another off the ground and sends it hurtling back your way. Flicking out a hand, you let the rock bounce off harmlessly against Halting Vortex.
Well, its a nice party trick, for now. but yeah, this will be a menace once it spreads...
We do know we can just cut the string to stop the effect though, right?
"The Gate naturally wants to remain closed"—you frown as her voice gains an odd undertone as she says 'closed'. Something's not right here...—"so it's more a matter of opening their Gate rather than closing it." Her voice didn't repeat that trick when she said 'opening' or 'closing', so what's going on here?
hm hm....
Odd undertone... Perhaps we can figure out something to bypass the filter?
as for what was filtered.... i imagine the Gate wants to be open, because the more Odr or whatever you call the energy gets in, the more lively the soul gets....
Its just the body, or the connection between the soul and the body, can't handle the shock of the initiation and the strain of overflowing Odr, huh?
Hence, why you need to develop both to get more Odr under your control.
Glancing around the village, you spy the market and Gary Tuskpuncher with it. Wait, no, not just one Gary Tuskpuncher, but also an identical-if-slightly-smaller Gary standing right next to the bigger Tuskpuncher. You'll want to talk to one of them as you've got something brewing in your mind, but that might wait for later.
hm... why did we want to talk about with Gary?
Audrikr is standing guard next to the Headsman's hall. His mail gleams in the sun and he leans on his spear as a twelve-year-old boy imitates him. Their hair is the same shade of black and they've both got that friendly air to them—you're looking at father and son right here, there's no doubt about it.
ah, the new generation is already making a new appearance, huh?
Across from the Headsman's hall is a new, grander building. By the looks of things, it's just finished construction and decorations are being painted on the siding. To your slight surprise, Eric emerges from the doorway only to stop and wave as he sees you. This must be the Kyrsvikingar's new outpost.
hm... well, if anything, at least, there will be a hunting party after Drysalt, if things turn to the worse.

Now, lets check the other comments...

We could invent ice cream..

When we make a book.. does it have to be animal leather? Could we make it out of thin Iron Sheets?

Hmm, the whole thing about stasis makes me come back to the idea of a sun in the soulscape. Though apparently it's night that's the issue, not day. 🤔 Regardless, it seems Halla is eyeing the stasis as something unnatural that might need to be fixed to fully realize the soulscape. And sunlight is what powers a real-world ecosystem - it creates wind, the water-cycle and so on. Maybe both a sun spirit and moon spirit, to give day/night cycles?
Do note, IF mentioned thats the normal, outside of midgard/earth/the written world.
The world Halla lives is somehow special/fucked up with the sun.
I think the "Botanical Society of Constantinople Special" is his term for a very large fireball, not the name of a book.
Ah, yeah, that makes sense too.
Where'd you get this from?
I mean, "Botanical Society of Constantinople Special" could very easily be a codex as well, and if Steinarr was that decorated/distinguished that he got acknowledged by the Emperor rewarding him the Varangian Way twist, he most likely had enough money to buy books, and we DO know he loves plants.
Edit:
Maybe we just need more training with it (vague Idea rather that formalized trick learned to competency), maybe there is something missing.
Obvious so far left to try:
Also try it with an enemy trick like KS, to ensure there isn't something special about those (could work normally, could be a competing diceroll, proximity could affect a theoretical competing diceroll)
You know.... if the problem is that we cant plant the strings on the target by orthstirr alone...
What if we plant them by an attack/physical contact?

Like.... idk, a tightly wrapped bundle of ort gets planted by a strike of any kind, or just throw it at him, and wherever the strike lands the ort bundle anchors there and unfolds like seaweed underwater? then its just a question of our tricks catching one of the strands and burning it up for the guiding effect, while the others stay there.

Given that Steinarr said Halla should plant it far away before he pulls out the 'Botanical Society of Constantinople Special', I'm pretty sure Steinarr just meant he'd burn everything down.

The superheated oil does at least 3 damage of fire, unless Born in Fire categorically only protects against fire, and not, say, superheated liquid (such as boiling water).

Quenching in healing water is something we should test for, say... a pot. Or eating utensils.. Or armor, actually.

That oil seems great for quenching stuff, but for leaving around. I bet Sten would like some hearthroot oil for quenching.

I'm pretty sure our fire resistance works on boiling stuff, which means the oil is very hot (probably higher than 3 damage, to be honest).

We can try, but I'm betting it doesn't do much.

Not really? It doesn't actually do anything to the thing that gets quenched, and it leaves you with a pot of really hot oil for a while. I guess you don't have to replace it?
