To be clear, we can both have him eat it's heart and use its skull for the book. We'd need to spend more on blinging out his armor, but that's all (the three uses would be the Heart here, the Skull for the book, and bone-ash for the armor).
Okay, but if the choice is between giving abjorn cool bear armor or a presumably invisible power up I prefer the cool bear armor.

I thought we were going to use one of those slots to bling out his armor?

Doing this saves us 125 oz. of silver. So using it saves a considerable amount...but it's not necessary to make the armor work.

I mean, I'm pretty sure we can use the bear hide as aesthetic decorations even if we're not counting it as one of the three uses. Plus we're definitely using the bear bone-ash for the armor.

All bears belong to Abjorn!
(on a side note, but if we ever get a pet bear for him, he could be riding a bear while shapeshifted into another bear and killing the enemy with his bear hands)

doesn't blinging out the armor cost like 200oz of silver if we don't use the shadow bear?
And we have 259oz Silver, 191oz Gold, 60 assorted dwarf coins, and a dwarf trade deal that turns cheap food into expensive metals.

with the value Alectai named, that means the pelt use is 125 oz silver.
With heart eating he gets some cool new powers.

hm... i wonder.... could he channel shadow stuff through dwarven items? what with those being weak in the light but great in shadow/darkness?

Yeah, and each oz. of gold is worth 8 oz. of silver, so that 191 is equal to 1528 oz. of silver...250 oz. is a significant portion of that, but hardly a ruinous one.

That'd be super gaudy though, just throwing all that as gold.

My current plan is that we visit Asvir next turn and (among other things, like turning in our dwarf coins for silver and talking with people who live there) go shopping to see if we can find something a bit less same-y to use for the purpose.

The Book, while cool, is not that important, short term, but very fitting for Halla, as iirc, she still thinks she is to defeat The Enemy. Its a Long term goal though, so if it wins, it wins.
But even without being hidden in shadow magic, The Book is a great step towards that.
But it is not an urgent thing, as at least our next Charred Soul inheritor will known about the Odr stuff and all that.

Even with the above though, i do hope we can use the full bear for Abjorn. I do Wish Halla a long life, but we are gonna end up in the war arc, somehow, so i want to make sure at least he is there for the kids.
And we know what type of beast this was. we can track down similarly blessed ones later.

I'm personally down for other options than the book in theory, but blinging out the armor isn't one of them, as that seemingly just saves us money we don't need to save. Right now, the options that seem to actually do something, are investing one use in Abjorn's armor via bone ash, him eating the heart, and maybe the book or using yet more bone ash on another item entirely (armor for Halla, a helm for Abjorn, etc.).

If Halla dies in battle, Abjorn probably does as well. He has a self-sacrificing Trait where he takes damage for her if he can even if it kills him. He could get 'lucky' and have a Bodily Death while hers is True but armor won't really help him outlive her. It'll help him not die in general, of course, but not specifically help him outlive Halla.

He could certainly outlive her, but only due to, like, a duel or a cultivation accident or something he can't get in the way of.

The book can help with passing on knowledge.
Get the kids that don't inherit Charred Soul valuable knowledge.

Or while we are fighting too far from each others.
It has happened before, and with peer to peer (heh, pvp) combat, it will happen again.
while i agree with what you said, I just hope he survives the event if Halla dies in battle, but as you said, its not guaranteed.
