...Having her psychoanalyze demons is brilliant.

She wants to stare into the face of evil? We'll give her literal personifications of unholy evil.

It's still a step down from Victor Zsasz, granted, but on the other hand it's relatively unexplored territory!
Sinner - the demon psychiatrist, sounds cool
Considering that Sinner fell in love with Black Mask, is obsessed with the seven sins and already really likes breaking people down exposing her to demons is very possibly the worst possible thing we could do

Especially if we want her to be anything even approaching an actual therapist

I dunno. We'd have the following advantages:

1) We can make it clear "Our LexCorp employees are visiting you to be happy and functional; that is the price you pay at your day job so that you can do something fun and "FOR SCIENCE!"

2) We have a good reason to have the demonologist watching Dr. Sinner to make sure she doesn't accidentally sell her soul or something, which means we'll have an idea of what's happening and whether she's starting to go unstable.

3) We're offering her something she can't get from most other places, not even places like Arkham.

Except Lex and Talia both agreed that that isn't what Sinner does

Sinner is a psychiatrist purely for the power over other people and to see just how badly people can be broken and is only useful if we discard everything resembling ethics and care more about keeping people in line than actually treating them
2) We have a good reason to have the demonologist watching Dr. Sinner to make sure she doesn't accidentally sell her soul or something, which means we'll have an idea of what's happening and whether she's starting to go unstable.
But that's taking up Rebecca's time that could be better spent elsewhere, still takes the risks inherent to summoning demons and assumes that Rebecca would somehow be able to recognise Sinner becoming unstable despite her being a sociopathic professionally trained psychiatrist who's successfully managed to hide her insanity from her colleagues, who are also professional psychiatrists
3) We're offering her something she can't get from most other places, not even places like Arkham.
Yes but the second she learns it's possible she could learn how to do it herself and not need us, especially if a demon takes a shining to her

At the end of the day it's so much micromanaging and tiptoeing around for a character that wouldn't be useful and has a good chance of actively driving some of our other hero units insane

What is the advantage of hiring Sinner rather than going after any of the other options, other than expediency, and are those advantages worth the not insignificant issues she causes?

In my opinion the answer is a resounding no

Since Amanda Lydecker pretty unlikely to win a spot right now I though I'd try to convince people to vote for her. Although from past experiences in quests this is likely a fruitless endeavor.

Amanda Lydecker by herself isn't that great. She is around 10 and it would be a long time before she would work for us. However what she does represent is connections. Her family is connected to the Terrible Trio. A secrete organization composed of the Lawford, Hardwick and Lydecker families that (according to the QM) are second only to the Court of Owls in their knowledge of Gotham and its secrets. They are noted as being extremely wealthy and they are involved in the occult.

Now does this matter to us? The Terrible Trio have spent over 2 centuries dabbling in the occult and fucking around in Gotham. The amount of knowledge they are going to be offer is significant. Especially since we have limited ways of fucking around with magic right now because of DOMA and our limited magic heroes. More than that as noted earlier they are second only to the Court of Owls in their knowledge of Gotham and its secrets. Guess what? The Court of Owls is about to be gutted by Ra leaving the Terrible Trio in the first place spot.

So we can potentially get magic resources, deep knowledge of Gotham and access to presumably a decent information network in the city (helps with World News and getting opportunities from it).

I think the magic and information network are the most important things we could get from them. They are going to be more morally like Lex compared to an organization like DOMA that is run by Diana. Meaning the magics they share might be of the darker nature. Besides that just having another option to conduct trades with for magic would be great since our only potential source right now is DOMA (they don't actually want to help on that front) and demons.

Beyond that I think having one good solid ally in Gotham would be great for the long term. We have already seen one enemy run to Gotham for safety and many great hero units reside in the city. Having greater information on the city can allow us to recognize opportunities to exploit. And yes we are making inroads with Cobblepot and the Menagerie, but they are obvious. Everyone knows of them and is looking into them. There is nothing conspicuous about their organizations. Hell Gordon and Batman already suspect Selina of leading the Menagerie, but just haven't proven it yet. I don't think they would be great organizations to make deep ties with like Vertigo or Eiling.

The Terrible Trio aren't on anyone's radar from what we've seen in interludes. Nobody has ever mentioned suspicions of the Lawford, Hardwick and Lydecker families. False Face Society, Court of Owls, Cobblepot, Menagerie, and Rupert Thorne have all been called out. Hell they are so low key they aren't even mentioned in the OCC "A History of Organized Crime in Gotham" informational thread mark by King Crimson. That is how much under the radar they are :p. I think as an ally in Gotham they are our best bet if we want to have a longer term relationship in the city.

I personally feel like meeting with a 10 year old child isn't the way to connect with the Terrible Trio. It probably doesn't help that I know nothing about them other than what I've read in thread so far, but I think we'd be better served by contacting them directly or waiting to recruit or meet Amanda later in the future. I'm also not really interested in operating in Gotham. From my limited knowledge it's utterly crime-ridden and home to Batman, the mob and wackos like Joker, Zsazs, and Scarecrow.

I really think we should recruit Alyce Sinner if not as a company psychologist then as a psychological researcher she would be great in being put in study psychology actions while we recruit one of the other arkam psychiatrists to work for our company.

True meeting a 10 year old might not be the best in, but what other ins do you think we might get?

I am also not interested operating in Gotham. That is why having a long lasting ally there would be great because we wouldn't infringe on their territory. However, its prudent to know what is going on in this city. It is a city full of hero units just waiting for things to happen to them. Knowing events that happen in the city can help us find the right time to try and recruit those hero units. Like just comparing the amount of hero units that are in Gotham compared to Metropolis is probably a crazy disparity. Gotham is so developed in the dc comics that it might be the place with the single most amount of hero units. Also while most of the city is self contained it isn't always. Some how the Russian Mob got a fucking nuclear sub, that must have involved forces outside the city. The Menagerie is looking to expand outside the city. Tobias Whale fled from us to Gotham. Those are just in quest things that show how these various factions aren't just isolated to Gotham. This isn't even looking at comic book stuff like how sometimes Joker decides to apply his trade outside of Gotham.

We only learned of the in quest events because we were personally involved. Normally though we don't learn about these type of events because we have no info network in Gotham. As stated previously since we don't want to operate in Gotham than the only real way to keep abreast of current events from turn to turn (and not rely on World News every 4 turns) is to have a reliable ally that that can inform us of the going ons. I have also previously stated my opinion on why I don't think we have many options for good allies in Gotham.

So a brief history on the Terrible Trio in a few different incarnations.

The first incarnation of the Terrible Trio was basically a collection of master criminals working together with the intent of being unstoppable with each one of them having a specialization (Fox=land, Vulture=Sky and Shark=Sea). They fought both Batman and Doctor Mid-Nite.

The Batman tv show had the Terrible Trio be a bunch of students who stole the Man-Bat serum from Dr. Langstrom and altered it to become more useful to them. They also gained significant intelligent boosts becoming geniuses in chemistry and hacking and were able to successfully turn someone they hated into a rampaging gorilla monster against his will with little effective prep-time.

The DCAU versions of the Terrible Trio were the closest to the original comics version. In that version they were massively wealthy individuals (Fox inherited an Oil fortune, Vulture aerospace and Shark shipping) who got into crime because they were bored and had mastered all other thrill seeking activities (hunting, deep sea diving etc.). They had their own arsenal of gadgets and Fox was confident that even if Batman caught him in the act of murdering someone, he'd get away with it because of how much money he had. Fun fact, Batman actually found them even more despicable than the Joker in this episode.

The Super Friends version made them into mad scientists. Batman the Brave and the Bold turned them into master martial artists with ninja skills who could fight on par with Batman and Bronze Tiger (admittedly three on two) and who were after a mystic totem that let them transform into a powerful animal form. These empowered forms required Bronze Tiger and Batman to also get a power up to hope to contest.

Lastly the Prime Earth iteration makes the Terrible Trio into a two century old family conspiracy. In particular their plan in the story was to essentially steal a book that contained the secrets of Gotham's oldest magic and then use that to take control of an ancient unstoppable ghost and using that to seize control of Gotham as the ghost was horrifically overpowered and an incredibly dangerous pyrokinetic (if I'm remembering right). There was also an unrelated group of master criminals who fought Batgirl.

I hope that gives some background on the Terrible Trio and gives some context as to the type of feats you could expect the group to have amassed over more than two centuries they've been operating.

So I am wondering how the meet up with student option is going to be framed after all a 25-30 year old billionaire approaching a student seems a bit... Iffy.

Depends on the student. It would be framed a little differently depending on the individual. Keep in mind that the following is a very rough list of a few ideas I might go with.
  • Barbara Gordon: Lex enters a computer room encounters her and she talks to him mentioning Lexpo which launches more conversation
  • Amanda Lydecker: Runs into Lex and mentions that her parents told her things about Lex Luthor. From there a conversation is maintained for a little bit
  • Dick Grayson: Dick approaches Lex and tries to covertly gather information on him while Lex does the same
  • Holly Robinson: Lex heads to speak with Collingwood but runs into her on her way out of detention and speaks with her instead.
I've got like one or two more scenarios for each student depending on what the final overall structure will be but suffice to say Lex might not actively seek out everyone he speaks with at Gotham Academy (like how at Penguin's party Dawn Golden technically approached him).

You know what I haven't done? I didn't react and discuss the update itself only the options. Which is a shame since it is pretty good. Lets fix that.
That being said I'm curious if people are feeling event fatigue. I like these events a lot and they're fun to write but they almost always end up being very long. I'm enjoying myself with the way things are playing out but if people have problems they should let me know.
I have enjoy this so far. Of course I've only really just jumped in to vote now so I don't know how bad past events were for other voters. I think part of why this event feels great to read is because Gotham has been so explored before and I've read many different incarnations of it. So seeing it in the quest and how the background rolls have shaped the city is interesting beyond getting more resources for Lex. Its cool seeing how Gotham has twisted from the quest even if we haven't had much impact as players on it so far.

All in all you'd found a decent collection of gifts and if anyone was trying to track some agenda or purpose for your visit they were likely to be thrown off of the scent due to this seemingly purposeless action. After all purchasing books for your daughter hardly furthered any nefarious schemes. Not quite an unmitigated and unbridled success as you'd initially hoped but the small victories were useful in and of themselves.
Hmmm. I didn't even consider that when the vote option came up  . I wonder if that gave an actual mechanical penalty to rolls people made actively tracking our visit or if it was more narrative? Also Lex's musing on the various products and how shit they were was funny. Gave me a small exhale out the nose.

Her phone would be able to record the conversation well enough and it was much easier than jotting down notes on a pad but she'd known some people who absolutely refused to be recorded including the former governor
Wonder if that former governor bit is a reference to something or just extra added detail to Vicki's internal monologue. Seems like an inconspicuous detail, but I wouldn't be surprised with King crimson if it was a reference to something. Also for the article in general I wonder what mechanically this is doing for Vicki. I understand narratively getting interviews with Lex is a pretty big deal and should boost the popularity of her articles. Mechanically though I wonder if she just gets a new action she can take or if we boost her roll to release the article or what. We've seen Lois take actions to publish articles before so I imagine its something like that.

What was wrong with her that she couldn't get any more work? Was she hideous or disfigured somehow? She hadn't lost her acting talent so something had to be wrong with how she looked. Paige worked hard to ensure everything was alright with how she looked spending hours upon hours fixing flaws she saw in the mirror but no matter what everyone kept looking at her like she was a freak and she wasn't getting work which meant she was screwing up and she looked like a freak.
I know its manipulative, but it seems we hit Paige at exactly the right time. Just as her body dysmorphia is starting to hit her and she is becoming less popular, but before she went full criminal yet. Basically the time in her life when she is the most vulnerable to being roped into crazy shit. This calls back to what I've said earlier about how this Lex manipulates people's emotional weakness and mental disorders to bind them closer to him and his company. Hopefully her dysmorphia doesn't get to out of hand if we keep her doing actions were she interacts with people or has an audience so it doesn't seem like we're shunning her. I think putting her on any acting action and most diplomacy actions should probably keep her satisfied.

One of the students was even bold enough to attempt to recommend that you observe the "Reaper Chapter" and see if you'd be willing to donate to them. It wasn't too pressing but it was worth looking into
The obvious reference for this is to the actual DC character called Reaper. Reaper has had multiple different incarnations, but I think the most explored one is him as a violent vigilante that ends up in conflict with the main protector of Gotham at the time. Sometimes he is also just a straight up villain to. I'm wondering what makes this student organization so interesting that Lex calls it out as something "worth looking into" @King crimson ?

Clayface might have let out more than he wanted to there. Evidently he seemed focused on ensuring that he wasn't forgotten. It matched with his fairly flashy attacks and showed why he wanted to fight the Batman so badly. By essentially acting things out live and ensuring that Clayface became a household name, Basil Karlo would secure his legacy as an actor and never be forgotten.

"After all monsters like Clayface are far more memorable than a normal man like Basil Karlo"
While this isn't quite the response I want I think Basil is still usable. Much like Lex he wants to leave a legacy. Only Basil wants to leave a legacy through the character Clayface at this point. Meaning he wants to do big flashy events were from which he will be recognized. I feel like we are going to inevitably run into times were we can give him these opportunities. Kinda like how the mob had Whale create a crime wave so big it distracted him enough for them to kill Dent's wife. I feel like Clayface may get use like that. When we need a hero so distracted from an action we need to take than we use Clayface as that distraction. Or hell he could be a Nemesis action by himself. Have him go horror movie on people know to associate with Superman. So still potentially useful, just in another capacity.

Quick update. I hope to get Secrets and Lies in Jump City Part 4 up tomorrow for your reading pleasure. From there depending on how things go the next week likely will be a little slow with only a single update as IRL things will keep me busy. By the 25th though I'll be back to producing content at full speed again. Updates to character sheets may occur (I'm holding off on Nathan Warbow for a bit because I'm thinking of only doing a single pass so as to cover any characters you encounter in Gotham). Thecreative writing contest winners have been informed and depending on how things go you'll have additional content become available to you.

Thank you for your understanding as I take some time off to deal with personal things. I'm still committed to keeping this quest going and I will finish it but I will warn you in advance that for the first time in a while I may not post an update for a whole week. I hope that is not the case but you should be forewarned. That being said there's still plenty to discuss and I'm always happy to see more omakes and art if you get a hankering for creating. Rather than ending on a dour note I'll ask you guys a question I think might prove illuminating.

What are all of the factions in Gotham and what's been going on with them? Whom among those factions is behaving oddly and how so?

My take on Sinner is that she discreet enough as to not cause us unintentional trouble (Unlike Harley, who can't keep her connection with Joker secret). Also demons is not the same as master criminals. It's very unlikely to fall in love with it, and it don't have much influence in the above ground world. Only problem will be if she decided that low level demons is not enough for her anymore, and will want to speak with some demon-philosopher or something, but its more long term problem. For now if we start summoning demons we can use her to learn more about them, and their world. And if Lex learns that some interdimensional beings torture human souls for lulz? It's sufficient ground for invasion, especially since, you know, everburning hell – its probably has unlimited reserves of gas and oil, which means american military will support us to the hilt.

My take on Sinner is that she discreet enough as to not cause us unintentional trouble (Unlike Harley, who can't keep her connection with Joker secret).
Harley managed to keep her connection with the Joker, or at least how deep it was, a secret for a not insignificant amount of time before she went full Harley Quinn and Sinner really only manages to avoid having her making her patients actively worse being found out because she works at Arkham where all of the inmates are already some of the craziest people in the country and a backslide either won't be noticed or won't be blamed on her

Plus whether or not she's found out doesn't really matter if she's actively making out employees mental states worse
Also demons is not the same as master criminals. It's very unlikely to fall in love with it, and it don't have much influence in the above ground world.
Sinner is a sociopath that grew up in a cult, fell in love with Black Mask, only really finds enjoyment in psychologically breaking people as much as she can and has an obsession with the seven sins

Her falling in love with a demon, or at least finding one extremely interesting and appealing, is far from out of the question and even if it doesn't have much power Sinner could help it out in her spare time if she wanted to
Only problem will be if she decided that low level demons is not enough for her anymore, and will want to speak with some demon-philosopher or something, but its more long term problem.
A long term problem that we don't gain any benefit from
For now if we start summoning demons we can use her to learn more about them, and their world. And if Lex learns that some interdimensional beings torture human souls for lulz? It's sufficient ground for invasion, especially since, you know, everburning hell – its probably has unlimited reserves of gas and oil, which means american military will support us to the hilt.
All stuff that we can do anyway in a more controlled setting without having to deal with Sinner's predilections and we could also learn from Azarath when we reach out to them

Lets see factions in Gotham:
Criminal: False Face Society, Court of Owls, Cobblepot, Menagerie, Rupert Thorne, Terrible Trio, Cosa Nostra, Falcones, Maroni's, Russian Mafia, Riley's Crime Family (Irish gangs), Triads, Yakuza, Asian youth gangs, Red Hood gang (probably defunct?), Scarecrow, Tobias Whale, Latino cartels, Silver Moneky, League of Shadows, Joker (who is noted to still have henchman active) and Supervillains as a more general group (who have been noted in an interlude to be keeping their heads down).
Heroic: Batman, Wayne Enterprises, Gordon (with GCPD ),
Government/Civilian: Arkham Asylum, Mayor Hill (Mayor of Gotham), Gotham Academy, Gotham University, Blackgate, Roland Daggett's Business

Just throwing that out here right now. Feel free to throw up more factions if you guys can think of them. I will note that there are a LOT of hero units and smaller "factions" in Gotham. People like Firefly and Mad Hatter. Yes they take actions, but are they really a "faction" that is important in this context. There are also people like Aleister Golden who probably have a secret people sacrificing cult, but that we have almost zero info about even OOC. As I said earlier in the thread I think Gotham is the location with the most hero units.

Will probably edit this post (or create a new one) later with what each of them are doing and who is acting sketchy.
