Blood, Sweat, and Tears (WH40k Design Bureau)

What about Nuclear Powered X-Ray Laser Sattelites? Use a Nuke with lenses and mirrors to blast an X-Ray Laser at a target from a Sat. Sure the Sat is annihilated but it should blast a Las shot even more powerful than a Las shot from a Battleship.

Bomb pumped lasers are a thing, although typically considered fairly primitive due to inefficiency.

When it becomes efficient people stop laughing.

Or a Nova Cannon. Stop laughing, it could happen!
Or torpedoes larger than typical Imperial ones that do much the same thing as a Nova. Sure you need to invest in that warhead getting there but when/if it does? Oof.

If a ship can power a Lance, it can power an energy type battery. Unless we start using super exotic particle cannons or mega-concentrated plasma or other fancy technobabble.
Eh, we can study the things and then look on cost vs benefit of the weapon systems. They might be the bee's knees or might just unlock new options for PD weaponry.

[X] Plan Cheaper filled Hangars
-[X] War Hawk-class Frigate Hull: As the Crusade grinds ever forward, a more advanced breed of warship is called for to bring death to the enemies of Humanity. Using lessons gleaned from the Sabre-class hull as well as examining the wreck of the looted Cobra Destroyer, a hull pattern deemed suitable for frigates has been devised. It shall have 3 Weapon, 2 Defense, 1 Engine and 2 Utility modules.
-[X]'Ford' class Fighter Based on our experiences with the fighters imported from Lexicalum and those salvaged the Ford class is an attempt to build a the same fighter for less. This is done due the number of carriers and defense stations we want to fill with them.
-[X] Sabre Reinforcement: With lessons learned from the battles and toil of the crusade, certain figures have decided that versatility is less important then defense. As such, a redesign of the Sabre Hull is undertaken, sacrificing component space for utility purposes in return for superior ability to mount defensive gear, as well as a reinforcement of the spine to enable it to reach speeds it can not currently reach without being broken into multiple pieces.
-[X] 'Cove' Pattern Military Hanger
-[X] Dry Dock Upgrade: With the amount of battlefronts that are projected to open as the Crusade progresses, eyes have turned to address the inevitable production bottlenecks that would be caused by current drydock facilities becoming insufficient. The superstructure is reinforced and expanded upon, with additional plasma generators and life support installed. Schematics adapted from the scaffold armor design are used to produce additional berths that will shield the shipbuilders from micrometeorite impacts and cosmic radiation.
-[X] (Study the Cobra wreck, and commit to building 2 Castigation-class Torpedo Corvettes for +1 Design Action)

As i think with a Hawk class frigate to build, 2 more Castigation-class Torpedo Corvettes, the needed repairs, defense stations using the cove hanger and the drydock we are not going to build more ships so the lance can be delayed a turn in favor of building fighters localy with a focus on producing them cheaper and who knows they might turn out better then the ones we import on a good roll.

Could we use the Cargo Hauler's repair dock to mine Asteroids? that should give us a huge boost to income in raw materials if we find a metalic asteroid.

Which version of the setting do you mean here? I don't remember Linty doing that in this quest and it's not ringing any bells for me.
Well...
He's referring to my preference of the War of the Krork continuity over canon choices (Primaris Marines versus Aegis Marines, for example). I think.
Yes. DLG definitely loves his WotK lore. To a degree some would suggest he puts it where it doesn't strictly speaking belong...

Per the OP we're already mining asteroids.

Can we make a huge Power Sword and use it as a Penetrator for our Torpedoes or are they going to be too expensive to be worth the cost? Fitting a nuke as the warhead would proabbly result in an instant kill on a small voidship and noticible damage on the bigger ships.

Can Melta Bombs be used in the same way?

Power Field circuitry is indeed probably too difficult to fit on a torpedo. It's hard enough to fit the damn thing on a sword you expect to get a lot of use out of.

Meltas are a known type of torpedo warhead, yes. Unfortunately, Melta Torpedoes are also rare and expensive, allegedly second only to Vortex Torpedoes in cost (and potency.) It's something to slowly work towards, but we're unlikely to get true Melta Torps for quite some time, they're simply too advanced.

Didn't boarding torpedoes use Melta Charges to get inside of a ship like in Astartes? just replace Space Marines with nuke and presto, right?

WH40k Torpedoes are huge tho, so fitting power circuitry should not be a problem.

Can we even make Melta weapons at this point? And torpedoes are expensive by default.

And the extra power supply gets taken out of the space for the warhead, not to mention having to shape the torpedo differently to make use of the power field. And assuming the power field doesn't damage or prematurely detonate the warhead.

Not quite. Things like Assault Rams use Magna-Meltas to weaken very specific areas of the hull and then ram through. Using an energy weapon in combination with ramming speed to penetrate is also what we saw in Astartes rather than charges.

Also we can't currently build boarding torpedoes anyway so even if it is that simple it's still beyond our reach.

Their size is exactly the problem. They're huge meaning, you need to fit a power field over a huge area, and we have no indication the technology scales well.

I mean, we know that there's Titan scale power weapons out there. But odds are that we couldn't make them anyway. All the power swords we currently have are either from before the Crusade or were recovered from the asteroid base.

I don't know but I am sure the Mechanicus supplying us with IN strikecraft and IG standard Lasguns probably know. And torpedoes are not as expensive as Corvettes especially if we use single use melta charge. Sacrificing multiple uses for a cheap single use Melta charge should cut the price down as we could use cheaper materials.

I can imagine a 3 bladed arrow design would work to split the armor and weaken it enough for the rest of the torpedo to bust inside. The 2nd problem of the powerfield damaging the warhead can be mitigated by cramming other stuff inbetween the warhead and the powerfield.

Isn't the reason we can't build boarding torpedoes is because only Astartes can use them without getting mulch into paste from the G forces?

True, but Titan equipment is some of the rarest, most advanced, and hardest to construct of all Imperial equipment.

It is not Imperial Navy doctrine to use boarding torpedoes, but Battlefleet Koronus says they absolutely can be used by normal humans (such as Rogue Traders and crew) and so does the fluff for the Viper Missile Destroyer (although that was shelved due to crewing issues.)

War of Hangars is winning by a large margin. Though I'll still leave it open for sixteen-ish hours to allow for any possible discussion, questions, and Important Stuff.

So my idea for the first Frigate to use the War Hawk-class, if the lance design also succeeded, would be to have a Lance, Torpedoes and a Macrocannon Battery, that would use the Resolutes as brawlers to wear down enemy shields while it went around sniping. Sort of like a Falchion with a lance in addition to the Torpedoes. Thoughts?

We have 1 salvaged lance and 2 salvaged macro cannons we can use on the frigate even if the lance research fails.

We'll probably have to pick lance or torpedos for the 'prow' mount. Becuase if you look at how big the lance weapon is on a Firestorm the majority of the area behind the armored prow is likely taken up by capacitors, sub-systems etc dedicated to the lance. So no real space for torpedoes there.

Putting the tubes on any other facings greatly limit the design because as a lance boat, you want that big gun aimed towards the enemy at all times instead of turning broadside to fire torpedoes. And considering the......suspect nature of Imperial torpedo guidance systems, trying a VLS design is not going to be effective or safe without a ton of prior research.

Torpedoes are aimed forwards because you need heavy systems to accelerate your weapons, which results in heavy recoil, and want to add your ship velocity to the launch. Both of these reasons are so your weapon can have the speed to defeat enemy point defense and have the range to touch someone.
Putting Torpedoes in broadside or turret mounts is technically possible, although much less effective and since no one does it it possibly requires some decent level of technology.
