Embers of Faith
Twenty-Sixth Day of the Fifth Month 293 AC
You have said your piece and there is no more to add, not here, not now. So with one last look at the guttering pillar of green flame you take your leave of King's Landing and return Sorcerer's Deep, to Thoros. The priest had had obviously been pacing through the chart room and just as obviously taking advantage of the pitcher of Arbor Gold set on the table by a servant, or given the hour mayhap by Hestior.
"Is it done?" To his credit the man's voice gives no hint of how much he must have been drinking, though it does bespeak of the worry that drove him to it.
"The Guildhall is no more, and the guild itself is soon to follow it. I shared the truth of their darker dealings with most of King's Landing," you reply simply.
He briefly curses at the news, then seeing your expression he adds, "It's good that the warning's been given, but now there'll be mobs and barefoot septons calling for the death of all 'firemongers'." The priest grimaces, obviously speaking from unwelcome experience.
"We don't have many septons here, barefoot or otherwise," Dany interjects. "Perhaps you would be better served in staying now that the 'king' of the Iron Throne has surely been warned."
For all his unexpected virtues Thoros of Myr is not a man skilled in keeping his feelings off his face. You read there interest clear as day, but also worry, and one rooted in something far deeper than merely taking a step into the unknown. Whatever his troubles, now is not the time to lay them out. You've other business... other means of persuasion.
"We should free Ser Kennos now that the greater danger is past. No man deserves to languish in a devil's company..."
"What of the damned, then?" the priest of R'hllor asks, the question more earnest than he would perhaps wished for.
"I pity them," you answer plainly. "Though I might fight and kill those who knowingly bargain with dark powers, though there are many I even hate, still I pity them all their fate." For a moment your mind lingers on the doomed Daemon worshiper who had prayed to kinder gods before the hour of her death.
The answer obviously comes as a surprise, but the priest does not pursue the matter further.
***
As you turn the scrying glass' eye upon Ser Kennos of Kayce, you are greeted by a surprising sight: rather than a bed in some inn or keep you see feeble fire, barely more than embers glowing under the eves of some nameless patch of wood, fat raindrops still sliding along the dark leaves, though the rain had obviously stopped. At first you think the knight had taken a chill from the wet and cold, but then you begin to catch his words. It has the sound of a prayer and not to any infernal power.
"The night is dark and full of terrors, the fire burns them all away. Trust in Him from whom all fire springs...."
"He is trying to fight the compulsion!" Dany exclaims impressed.
"And the Lord of Light has awakened the strength in his heart that he may do so," Thoros interjects reverently.
You forbear to mention that you would rather see him call to a kinder less troublesome power. In the end the westerlander knight's actions do make some sense. After seeing his friend and priest of the Red God cut down before his very eyes, he had heard him in his mind like some manner of guardian spirit.
Whatever the case he seems to be alone as far as the scrying mirror shows, with no trace of either other men or hidden devils lurking nearby. Still ,few victories have been won by acting in haste. "I shall consult with our scaled friend," you tell Dany, not mentioning Yss by name so as not to turn Thoros' world on its side too swiftly.
Unfortunately, Yss confirms your suspicions. Ser Kennos is being watched by devils wishing to use his momentary straying as a lure to capture Thoros, whose name he had given away during his fevered prayers. Further questioning reveals that they are not expecting you but rather some power within the faith of the Red God, perhaps come from Myr itself, to recover their wandering brother.
What do you do?
