And now it bothers me even more that they are going to somehow lessen her connection to the Kami.
For all that I'm usually among the first to call for combat as a solution, I don't go out of my way to advocate for excessive violence. OJ and Xue are making me rethink that policy.
If it's any consolation this whole situation has shown both of them one very important thing.
They are big fish in a small pond, and we're the crocodile that poked its head in, tore a group of fish apart, gave them both one look and then left.
After of course telling them about all the other wonderful crocodiles that we knew about, that were bigger than us, meaner than us, and wouldn't hesitate to not only eat every fish in said pond but render it devoid of life and incapable of ever being clean again.
Are there any interesting hills and mountains in the area? I mean, SD already is well served in that regard, but maybe Oberyn would like to have a scenic one in Golden Fields?
Not every story can have a happy ending, I just build the characters and motivations and let them loose. How those interact with player actions and each other is up in the air until the moment comes to write it.

The Sorcerer Lord of Carcosa is perceived as the most dangerous. He's right up there with Melisandre, Euron Greyjoy, and Bloodraven in terms of original canon magic users. He has a huge leg up on basically everyone else thanks to that.

"I see, I regret that we suffered such a misunderstanding," the words taste bitter upon the tongue for you regret far more than that, but there is nothing more you can do for Pol Ning. You can hardly kidnap her to spare her whatever lessening of magic is planned and whatever her brother and Lady Xue might hope you will not pledge a marriage alliance with them, however distant. You suspect the day will come when you will see these lands change hands, whether it is in Bu Gai's name or your own. "My sister and the Lady Sandviper shall speak to the princess in three days' time as you requested."
And it would give them a chance to assure her of her fellows' escape from 'imperial justice', you think but do not say for you of course accept Pol Ning's request. You could certainly use shugenja less troubled than the one who thinks he lost his soul and these mages do not deserve to die for being caught up in the Golden Company's plots any more than the princess deserves to be married off to the Crane Lord. If nothing else she should be away from the worst of the conflict in Asabhad.

Upon your return to Sorcerer's Deep you sort through the treasures Zherys and his company had recovered from the depths of the Shadow Fortress. Much of it is mundane, silver and plunder, fine silks and furnishings from the Cheesemonger's quarters for it seems he would not make due with the counterfeit luxury of shadow forged accouterments, but Relath had also been able to discover the hoard chambers of a pair of younger dragons filled with anciant works of art that have not seen the light of day for centuries, perhaps millennia.
There was magic too to be found among the darkened halls, strange fetishes of blackened teeth that grant one skill in hunting men and all those akin to them, a diviner's crystal that can see only in shadow, a shard of false metal that allows one to slip one's consciousness into conjured creatures of shadow that will serve Teana well and last but not least a pair of arcane seals that can thankfully be reshaped to make use of a different symbol than the grinning skull of the Golden Company.

OOC: The looting was already done since there was no reason to delay it once the fortress was taken and every reason to hurry before the Rat King and company showed up. That was when they looked for scying foci for Illyrio and the dragons too.
