  • [X] Approach Lord Farring as yourself.
-[X] Reassure him he is not a direct target of any Maester conspiracy, though you don't outright deny they aren't working some intrigues, you don't blurt details other than the fact that his wasn't trying to work any sorcery like what occurred with Jon Arryn's child, which was deliberate.
--[X] If asked to elaborate on this--and fair enough--you aren't sure what caused Jon Arryn's son to grow older all of a sudden, but you know it wasn't just some tricksome Fey's plot without purpose or for some kind of poetic irony, hence calling it "deliberate".
--[X] And as for "what intrigues" the Maesters might be working, you point out that it is vanishingly unlikely even a tenth of all Maesters could be involved in a single group of schemers, given how factionalism works in the Citadel, and the fact that the majority of Maesters, if they do happen to be involved in these plots, are likely totally unknowing.
--[X] The problem with the Maesters isn't so much that there are people using their influence to work treachery all while holding the trust of Westeros' Lords, it is that with all of that, even if the vast majority held to their oaths faithfully, it would be trivial to abuse this symbiotic relationship and turn it cancerous. It would take drastic measures and reforms to cease this business, and even naming a fraction of what you know of does nothing more than make him a target where right now he is not.
--[X] Essentially: Let Viserys be the visible target for that ilk.
---[X] If it helps at all, Jon Arryn's death as far as you can tell was completely mundane, confirmed with divination and cursory investigation. The man was old. He was old and took a bad fall. It's the most common death for noblemen disconnected from the usual avenues for "untimely ends". A regular ride through the countryside, not even during a hunt.
---[X] "My Lord, you are surrounded by a hundred conspiracies, but I doubt many of them have you at the forefront of their plans, and you are likely just an incidental piece on the board of various players. Such as it has ever been in Westeros, and with only leal servants and trustworthy allies warding off the most common malaise infecting the realm." Take it from a man who is the target of about half of those secretive cabals, basically.

To remind people of what the vote looks like.

"No Russian Valyrian."

Huh, so that's why it kept nagging me.

It'd be kind of absurd that a twenty first level wizard lich would hang on Fakkir's shelf, tho.

Also, CR 29 with 139 HP? ELH is high as a kite... as usual.
It's a home defense system of last resort. Mock up a dummy Demilich skull, drop an overwhelming aura of Necromancy on it, then set up an enchanted recording device to capture reactions from folks who break in and pass their Knowledge(Religion) skill check.

And have a Prestidigitation spell ready to clean up all of the industry's mess after they shit themselves.

And sanity. The right balance of Lawful to Evil actually requires some sort of code of ethics that keeps you from veering up into straight up Chaotic mess of instability. Dany was never one to possess the mental fortitude to make the hard decisions for the right reasons, more that she keeps making the wrong decisions for what she perceives to be the "right reasons". She's basically delusional, in order to make her dream come true and put an end to slavery she doesn't want to accept that the world needs to slot into certain behaviors and that they need to be forced into them in the first place, and that if she is willing to apply force to get her foot in the door, because she used force, she needed to be ready to apply it again whenever people relapsed.

That's the problem about using force to implement societal changes, you are pretty much there to act as the stick from then onwards, supplying the carrots when people do what you want. If you wanted to stop having to resort to force to keep the wheels spinning, you should have talked it out.

And yes, it wouldn't have been fast or easy "talking it out", that would have implied a long-term strategy to gather the resources to put you in a position where you could apply your force strategically and only when necessary, "talking softly and carrying the biggest stick" if you will, a strategy that only works when you are already an entrenched power who can project force from the safety and comfort of a location that your enemies can't attack meaningfully.

Edit: Basically yes, I'm implying hur dur she should have just gone to Westeros as soon as it was possible, THEN come back after securing her banners' loyalty, perhaps even with a "glorious war against enemies we can all agree we hate". She could have been Aegon the Conqueror reborn if she had just been a little more patient.
Reminds me of a Youjo Senki fic that's in a post-victory period, and Tanya is called to give the soldier's point of view in how they should treat the defeated powers, and she gives a very rousing and emotional, but completely generic as to be possibly interpreted from any angle and thus completely cover her ass speech, all while thinking "as long as they either offer a helping hand or out a boot to their neck, it should be good, half measures led to WW II".

As her generic speech swung every which they, they, in tears, concluded they should be harsh, but not too harsh, and go for a middle-of-the-way solution.
@DragonParadox no pressure, but I'll be waiting for that Omake
Oh yeah, sounds great.

I'm very happy with Bronn's build. He is a very nice fighter/rogue with a few fun tricks.
Clearly the coven is just a farm for forked cats to create more of their own by providing their brethren with a source of easily defeated witches.
That sounds like a great plot.
Besides, I'm rockin' the OG avatar, what's not to like?
Artemis is using a modernized version of his old blue magic circle, too.

But in your case, the avatar sort of changes how I hear your posts.
Most of those droplets are in Fate Zero unfortunately.
Unsurprisingly, in the one without Shirou.
The Seven will be dealt with way before the apocalypse, rest assured.

It certainly doesn't help that GRRM didn't have a good sense of scale either. :V I'm not sure how true this is, but there's a story circulating that he visited the set of Game of Thrones in the first season and complained that the Wall was way too big... when it was like half as tall as what it was supposed to be and they were going to greenscreen the rest.
Actually, I find that in this case, the Wall being so absurdly off the charts, and being imprinted as so due the show, just helps more than anything.

It highlights the "this is the greatest work of an age of magic and wonder". If the wall were, say, five meters high, it'd just be boring.

As is, everyone knows what you are talking about when you say The Wall.

Because it being what it is, you can't help but wonder "what do you need a seven hundred feet tall wall to defend against?". It builds up the bad guys without even mentioning them.
Off topic for a second, but goddamn have the last 24 hours been fucking wild in the US.
??
Elaborate.
I almost overshared, because totally shattering someone's world view is always my first draft, but I realized we're trying to calm him down a moment later. :V
The Pondmaster suddenly feels like reaching for his desk whiskey for some reason.

@Crake, @Duesal, you two mind writing up which dragons exactly ya want to re-bind next turn, for sake of ease of compiling before the turnvote?

Grey Ghost which is going to be tamed by Headmistress Teana Strycos, and Meleys the Red Queen and Caraxes the Blood Wyrm which will need to be tamed by Zherys, Malarys, or Ceria depending on the desires of the three. The other dragons are claimed already.

He probably means the whole thing with Trump-Ukraine, or that's what Reddit tells me.

And then the writers just have the whole thing go down without a fight so they can emulate a scene from a World of Warcraft trailer (a really cool scene tho).
And same for the bad guys.
Damn, I'm still bitter about that last season.

Everyone is bitter about the last season. What an absolute pile of steaming shit.

Basically, Trump extorted the Ukraine by withholding 400 million dollars of military aid so that they would investigate/make up dirt about Joe Biden. We found out there was a whistleblower complaint about it a week ago, then both Trump and Rudy Giuliani admitted to doing it, and it has all led up to Tuesday, when the House of Representatives launched a formal impeachment inquiry into Trump. So not really 24 hours but it has been wild.

Of particular note is that this seems to be shifting public opinion about impeachment in a way no other Trump scandal has; we are now at 66% in favor.

I convinced a friend to watch the series a month before season 8 came out, she is now on season 7 and I feel guilty about it.
I still think the series is worth watching, but how they managed the ending is definitely rage inducing.

I've got a similar story. My little sister and I convinced both her roommates to watch Game of Thrones before season 8 came out. We tried our best to get them to quit before they suffered after we saw the shit show of the last season, but they didn't believe us when we told them how bad it was.

I feel guilty about it, but not as much since we did try to warn them.

I haven't told her anything about the ending just in case she somehow manages to enjoy it.
If she doesn't, there's always the memes.

Eh, in a universe without actual ice dragons, a zombie dragon taking down the Wall is a fairly neat way of getting his army past an obstacle he should be throughly incapable of bypassing on his own. Even World War Z style pile up ain't gona do jack to a 200 meter tall flat wall.

In a universe with ice dragons, which were around the time Bran did his thing, the Wall going down like that is a serious fuckup on his part.

The most sensible solution is to use the item that took part in crafting it, as implied to be happening in the books.

That works perfectly with our understanding of magic here, no spell is unbreakable, so the Wall either has to be weak enough to be unmade by common means, such as Disjunction or high-end Dispels, or it must have an inbuild weakness such as the tool that created it.

We already know that specific words of power exist, that can manipulate Wall to a very high degree.

It stands to reason, that a "self-destruct"-option also exists among those, if hidden much further than what we've seen to this point.

...we should look into those words at some point. The RA isn't even a high-progress one.

I guess we should probably find that horn before the Others do.

Yeah, it's definitely worth a study action. More to the point, studying the Wall is part of advancing Lya's Runecrafting anyway.

People, let's keep our actual objectives in mind :
  • We want this guy's fealty. Shitting on him isn't great.
  • We seem to want to avoid knowingly accepting usurpation - should we be telling him about his kid's real father? If we don't, we're accepting that precedent.
  • Do we actually need to reassure him at all? Honestly, giving him an item of detect poison seems better and easier. Having Lords feat the Maesters is good for us.
Basically I think we should be focusing on the inheritance issue and not on this dude's worldview.

Link?
Jacobk got me interested in potentially YJ fics, but most I found were utter shit (The Leader... Ugh).

The Wall is a construction not the work of a single spell and furthermore the humble Wall of Stone is susceptible to neither.

I don't believe it should be literally indestructible but if either of these work, that's just ridiculous.
