Part MMDXXI: To Brew Treachery
To Brew Treachery

Eighteenth Day of the Seventh Month 293 AC

After some thought and consultation you decide to go to Lys yourself while Wyla and Garin return to Braavos to deal with your foes there. Your mother and Glyra choose to stay in Myr as secret envoy and spy for your interests respectively. Before leaving you take care to warn the gremlin against meddling too deeply into the business of the Red God's faithful, for they of all the remaining powers in Myr might pose a genuine threat even to her.

***

Once you had gone through the motions of greeting Aedon, cursing his supposed enemies and praising his cleverness in having 'discovered' their plot, you take the opportunity to speak to the one who had actually set the stage for the coup to come. Azema looks frustrated enough to kill something which in her case is rather less of a metaphor than it might be for others, but to her credit she does not let her current lover's ineptitude distract her from the prize at hand, which she describes in great, if sometimes scathing detail: "It's like fighting a duel with a sledgehammer, you have a great bloody piece of iron at the edge of a stick, plenty of leverage, plenty of force if you connect, but it takes so long to do so that your enemy is not even there by the time the blow lands."

"So you can't get the soldiers into position?" you interject taking one of the candied plums from the silver bowl between you. Not quite your preferred treat. Azema has more of a sweet tooth than anyone you know, including Dany.

"Not without warning half the city," she replies. "All the gates are staffed by guards loyal to the Spicers with a contingent of Unsullied in each position to ensure they stay loyal. As fascinating a challenge as it might be to seduce eunuchs into treachery I could not manage it quickly." The alu demon licks her lips in a delicate almost cat-like manner.

"Would the Spicers be so quick to abandon their power and flee?" you ask.

"Certainly. I need no foresight to see that," Azema nods firmly. "They are practical folk the Lyseni. Better to let the general have his palace then poison his soup or his sheets than contest him with sword in hand. All the greater manses have escape tunnels, and they practice using them regularly."

"All of the families?" The depth of paranoia would do King Maegor proud, you think surprised.

"Yes, they have a holy day centered around the act. They call it the Day of Twined Veils when everyone in the Great Houses down to the infants and babes in arms is secreted out of the manses." Azema sounds almost admiring of the fact. "Being able to participate in the march that follows is a sort of rite of passage to families newly risen to the most rarefied spheres of power."

You wince at the reminder of 'babes in arms'. Aedon's mercenaries are unlikely to spare many during a sack. Of course you could simply let the Spicers flee... though that would cost them prestige and wealth it would not break the families' hold on power, their eastern contacts that are the source of said wealth. In the wake of conquest they could simply ask for their property back which would put you in a rather delicate position.

"There is always the possibility of using magic to get around our troubles," you muse. "The question is..."

"How much and what sort," Azema finishes. "All well and good for you to prance around as Ye Old Volantine Wonder, like a stuffed beast come to life, but if we start using strong magic to help Aedon some might come to suspect who is truly behind the curtain all along, a fact which would perhaps be privately admitted by some in Lys but far less so elsewhere..."

What do you do?

OOC: A little short, but I need to know what sort of coup you want to pull off so I don't include superfluous exposition.

Okay, morals aside (and it will never get less weird that I have to actually consider them), is there any reason that we want to limit Aedon's ineptitude and the resulting sacking it will cause?

Besides the fact that said sacking is breaking some of our future stuff of course.

I would prefer letting them flee. I don't want dead children.
True. I mean, Aedon has to march straight to battle afterwards, so if we time things right they should have no time to assassinate the idiot.

They'd spend a few days hiding, he dies, and by the time they emerge, they are alive but we've confiscated Aedon's property, which includes what he confiscated from others, so they are shit out of luck regardless.

And we achieved fuck-all with all of this.

The point is to break the Spicers, not to cause a mild inconvenience for them.

The Spicers aren't magic, if we take all their money and their stuff they are effectively neutered. Even if they have a stash somewhere and we don't get it, we've taken their income stream and other properties so they are still ruined.

@DragonParadox, is there any regular gathering of the 40 families or could Aedon somehow call for a meeting where we could get most of the Spicers?
  1. Lys' legislative assembly is in session and that contains most of the heads of the families as well as many of their heirs. The issue is that it is still within the walls, so you need to figure some way to get soldiers past the gates without raising the alarm
  2. As for calling a larger meeting, sure. He could throw a feast or party. Some might be suspicious and not come but many will show up so as not to lose face with their peers.

Except for the political train-wreck that DP has already pointed out in the update.

This would equal to seizing most of the wealth of the magisters and will definitely cause every single one of them to scheme against us.

You want riots? You want everyone we send to Lys getting poisoned three times a day? You want a civil war?

That's why Aedon takes the stuff, and we just don't return it when we conquer the city, because it is already done. Why would we return it? What have they done for us recently?

Do Conan method of denouncement of claim combine with some hostage and all that.

Why we need to kill children when we can use them as hostage or send to silence sister?
