Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

Okay.

Well, for all of the people who want to not do the favor at all, at least until we can ace it, I hope you're all willing to do the full three then.

Rather than just argue for dragging it out forever and then doing the bare minimum.
Well duh lol

That's exactly why im dropping your plan like a hot potato. Either do something fully or not at all imo

[X] Plan: Flaming Fire + Woodworking

Okay, so round-up of the week's efforts, training-wise. This was Week 35; we're starting to get to about where we wanted Ling Qi to break through.

1. Capped Falling Star. Note that the tutor only gave +5 (she was mostly Wood); while it didn't make a difference here, it's probably good to consider for future tutors to pick arts/elements/themes that are likely to have a tutor good for both cultivations. The capstone technique is more of the same, and the art overall is a pretty solid offensive archery art, offering some multi-target and single-target effects; the Speed debuff is clearly meant to prevent an enemy from closing the distance.

I would suggest that if Ling Qi looks for another Archery art, she look for one meant for somewhat shorter archery distances - FSA is clearly meant to be a long-range art. Maybe a Wind/Darkness art, for stealth archery? Regardless, FSA (and Zephyr) should be enough to carry her Archery for a while yet, art-wise.

2. Thousand Ring Fortress is one action away, easily enough. Definitely finish that off before breakthrough.

3. Capped Fleeting Zephyr. Already talked about this back in its update. I would re-iterate an interest in picking up another (or both) of the other Zephyr arts to expand the Wind efforts.

4. Spine meridian get, always nice to have.

5. Physical cultivation is up to 129/180. Will Ling Qi need to take an action on it? Well, another TRF action (if TRF is soft-capped next level), another couple meridians... the only arts not soft-capped are either really expensive (AE) or are still a bit away (AC and AS), so there's probably not much more overflow to go. A bonus physique roll from another Highsun with those meridians... mmm... might do it; It's probably a good idea to get some of the physical cultivation pills to help those chances.

And, when it gets down to it, unless Ling Qi's wanting to break through in Physique first, she can finish it off after breakthrough. Mind you, breaking through physically first might not be a bad idea. That gives her more autos for things like Stealth and Larceny and such; might help her in dealing with an angry Sun Liling (assuming Liling goes after Ling Qi instead of Cai Renxiang as she seems to do right after getting stronger; she likes to try to go for the head).

6. Stats. Intelligence hit five dots, formation uncapped... very nice. Athletics might hit six dots before breakthrough; Manipulation and Archery are a bit too far without assistance. Several atributes and skills are within reasonable omake distance: Strength 4 (2 exp), Composure 5 (5 exp), Investigation 4 (4 exp), Occult 4 (2 exp), Politics 4 (4 exp), Socialize 2 (4 exp), Resilience 5 (1 exp). I don't think there's a breakthrough bonus for soft-capped attributes, however, so it's not *actually* important to get anything up beforehand.

For cultivation actions this coming week, I think:
- Thousand Ring Fortress 4
- Argent Current 3
- Argent Storm 3
-- will need the Han Jian minor
- Arm Meridian
(last action being a job, reading up on dragons or the favor)

On minors, I think:
- Puzzle box (could be nothing, but there's likely a reward inside; info or pills applicable to breakthrough would be nice, map to a cultivation location or a handy New Moon-themed art would be lovely)
- Han Jian (unlock Argent Storm, more setting info)
- Zhengui (obviously)
- Bai Meizhen (she needs to keep up on her training for her goals; Ling Qi's got an escape talisman and has improved a couple of her arts, she'll be fine)
- ? (one of the Gu actions is favored, but Su Ling or Li Suyin or Cai Renxiang aren't too bad)

Odd that we've never really heard anything about that argent liquid stuff. I suppose Li Suyin's still poking at it? And did the Argent bonus successes get applied to Argent Current this week?

And yes, I realize people have decided that Argent Storm is a poor fit for Ling Qi - I'd suggest it definitely has good use though; Sun Liling loves her physical attacks. Extra defense dice, extra initiative, extra speed are all directly applicable to the issue of blood-thirsty plant princess. The counterattack is not strong, but it's instant-cast and lasts for three turns; the booster is also instant-cast.

EDIT: So far none of the plans enthuse me.

One consideration for how many favors to repay that nobody has mentioned is that Fu Xiang by turning it into a 3 tiered favor repayment plan is gathering information on how different Ling Qi's normal favor repayment policy is from what she did with Meizhen. Because he is an information broker, so if he is thinking long-term he'll have a dossier on everyone of note within the outer sect, and anyone who with a little luck might be of note for that matter.

I would suggest that if Ling Qi looks for another Archery art, she look for one meant for somewhat shorter archery distances - FSA is clearly meant to be a long-range art. Maybe a Wind/Darkness art, for stealth archery?
Our tutor did recommend a close range pure wind (or pure water) variant. He saw how we fight, so I'm inclined to go with that recommendation.

Actually, if you look at the number of dice rolled the tutor gave 10 dice for FSA. Still not the 15 that she gave to TRF which is what tutors normally give, of course.

Considering that we know one of the followup archery arts is pure wind, and iirc another is wind/water I really don't see the point of more zephyr arts of the same tier. We can get more wind arts that actually move us forward in something we are quiet good at, rather than picking up additional equal tier equivalents of an art we already have.

Alright, so I've just copied over Flaming Tree's pill plan over to mine. From what I'm reading of the discussion, the main reason people don't like "Let's Try This" is because of the lack of Xiulan minor, and they don't consider the wolf mission enough. Okay. I'm not willing to switch out Cai for Xiulan like Flaming Trees has, but would people be more interested if I swapped out SuMa for Xiulan? I'm more willing to put that off for a week than I am to not have a Cai action.

@Erebeal @Black Noise @Horium @Uvigz Would this be a dealbreaker for you guys if I swapped? I'm not actually clear how important people find the SuMa action this week.

I rather hope Ji Rong doesn't hold a grudge; of all of the major figures that've taken Sun Liling's side, he's probably the one who has the least animus towards Ling Qi... and among Ling Qi's peers, he's probably the most likely to understand just where she's coming from, background-wise. I've often wished we took an early social action just to get his perspective on these crazy nobles and their crazy habits :p

I do wonder what his capture will bode... on one hand, Sun Liling is very likely to try to break him out as her next dramatic move; she's got a limited number of heavy-hitting underlings/allies (or any underlings at all, at the moment), and leaving him to languish is probably... actually, I'm not sure the ones she has left (Leng and Zihao) will actually care; the former is solidly hers, and the latter rather disdains Ji Rong last we knew.

Heh... I wonder if he can be coaxed into switching sides if Liling doesn't rescue him. Cai Renxiang certainly is happy to acquire talent, and he does have that. He's got what looks like a crush on Liling, but such things can fade with disillusionment. If not, and if he's not rescued... huh, I do wonder how much his cultivation will suffer. Poor guy - he didn't exactly make the best of life choices, but I suspect that cultivation is all he's got.

Putting that aside a bit, I do wonder what Sun Liling will do once she exits cultivation. I rather hope she's unsuccessful at what she's going for (another breakthrough... already?? God, I hope not), but I wonder what she'll be doing now that it looks like she's not going to be able to hold together a group. This one shattered, and by the time she exits all the underlings are likely to have joined other groups that are more stable (or perhaps surrendered to Renxiang).

No-holds-barred strike on Cai Renxiang with no retreat (possibly leading to another sect sanction)? One-woman war from the shadows? An attempt at Renxiang, followed by a retreat to solo cultivation/hunting missions, followed by another when she thinks she's better prepared, rinse and repeat?

Considering that we know one of the followup archery arts is pure wind, and iirc another is wind/water I really don't see the point of more zephyr arts of the same tier. We can get more wind arts that actually move us forward in something we are quiet good at, rather than picking up additional equal tier equivalents of an art we already have.

It comes down to that I'd like Ling Qi to have some more breadth before depth. The one she chose was the movement-focused one; I'd like to add in the offense and defense in there. For that matter, the offensive one might be quite useful for a relatively short-range archery situation (see below). The defensive one might well do as Argent Storm does, but more focused on the evasion and less on the melee attacks.

Our tutor did recommend a close range pure wind (or pure water) variant. He saw how we fight, so I'm inclined to go with that recommendation.

That works too. Again, though, I feel like getting another archery art is relatively low priority for Ling Qi. After breakthrough, there's several arts that suddenly uncap (EPC, FVM, AM, SCS), and she'll also have TRF, AE, AC and AS to continue to work on (in about that priority). After that comes some more music arts, I feel - one of her guards has a soporific art, but maybe Ling Qi can hunt down some more inspirational pieces, or perhaps something more bewildering/mysterious than despairing.

After that comes perhaps some more utility arts that 'fit' the existing meridians* or the fourth Argent Art.

* So they can be swapped in on the fly to deal with a situation, then swapped back out to the normal load after. Ling Qi's currently got:

Head: Lake, Lake
Lungs: Dark, Dark, Earth, Music
Spine: Dark, Mountain, Wood, Wind, Thunder
Heart: Wind, Wind, Water, Dark, Wood, Fire
Arm: Wind, Water, Heaven, (blank)
Leg: Dark, Dark

So there's a decent amount of possibilities here. A gliding/lightening art that's pure wind and spine/arm, for example, could be used along with the dress for some serious distance, then deactivated when Ling Qi hits the ground.

tbh, I was thinking about switching to Flaming Trees because it looks more likely to win.

Also, guys? For everyone thinking "we can do x next week" consider that we will only have 1 minor next week. We'll be doing closed door cultivation, and we can't exactly attach anything to breakthrough actions.

Which, now that I look at it, means we really can't put off Cai. So I guess I won't be switching to Flaming Trees.

... I'm kind of worried though that if we put off SuMa too long, yrsillar will disappear it. Dammit people, can't we just put off the puzzle box?

Cai isn't going to demand we answer her offer the moment we show up as a Green. She knows well we've been feeling her out for a while and if she really wants our allegiance, she isn't going to rush us now. If she does, she doesn't deserve our loyalty.

Breaking through is the softest of soft deadlines for Cai's offer, not a hard one.

I am strongly opposed to closed door cultivation next week, and will be pushing plans that don't have it.
Our minors are far too valuable right now to be doubling up, and there is 100% no need to go for the super-duper-single-week breakthrough. Furthermore, even if we used both of our breakthrough pills, and took 6 actions, the chance of us actually getting a double-breakthrough are only around 15-16%, less than 1/6; I don't think those are impressive enough odds to be worth chasing.

[X] Plan: Flaming Fire + Woodworking

The concept of "punching down" in this context is hilariously wrong. We're already doing something exceedingly verboten as it is; I doubt doing it at Earliest Green is significantly worse than doing so at Peak Yellow. Moreover, as has already been demonstrated by Sun Liling, succeeding at something by punching down doesn't matter much if you succeed in the first place.

Alright, gonna switch out SuMa for Xiulan and hope my plan gets more votes. I really think it's important to have both Cai and Meizhen this week.

I'm in a similar position to Primal Shadow, and don't see why we should go for closed door cultivation. I haven't kept up with the discussion on why we should do that, (far as I last knew we were going for one on week 37), can you tell me why? If we did, what's stopping us from devoting our one minor to the Cai action? I don't see the connection you are drawing.

All of the plans which are leading have SuMa in them so I'm not sure what you mean with that last comment. I assume you don't want to do the puzzle box?

I somehow didn't realise that the plan I copied didn't have the Cai Renxiang minor action, so I've put it in and removed the puzzle box action. I'm not going to be getting any votes, probably because I'm putting narrative above cultivation certainty, but life goes on.

tbh, I was thinking about switching to Flaming Trees because it looks more likely to win.

I'm rather against the conventional "hole up and break through" wisdom, myself, and would prefer a somewhat more 'moderate' approach. For one thing, Ling Qi gets +10 Argent successes and +? EPC successes to cultivation... assuming she uses the vent and does something sneaky. For a second, as you not, that's a serious loss of minor actions (effectively four), at a time when I feel like Ling Qi really does need them to keep things rolling. I'd prefer instead to throw three actions at breakthrough, one on something sneaky (that can boost Ling Qi back to peak if she fails a roll by up to 25) and the last on cultivating one of her arts (or, if she fails a roll and fills it back up with the sneaky action, a retry on breakthrough). That gives her possibly one or two actions to attach minors to and keeps her social actions. It *also* doesn't reveal what she's trying to do - wanna bet Yan Renshu would love to know when (and where, but he can divine that) Ling Qi is trying to break through?

The pills just aren't powerful enough to try and push both breakthroughs in the same week. There's a pretty good chance of failing a first roll for either, making the plan very hard to figure out. Now, a closed-door for just one... more doable, but it still sacrifices a lot - more than I think is necessary. To be honest, even given the pills, I'm somewhat partial to take an approach of (this is an offhand estimate):
* Week 37: three actions allocated to breakthrough or recovery-to-peak, one action doing something sneaky, the last cultivating AE (or another art). EPC successes are allocated to recovery if necessary, AE if not. Chances of zero, one, two (~41%) or three (~17%) successes bit less certain to calculate due to "is 25 successes enough to recover to peak" and such. Throwing the breakthrough pill on changes it to about 22% for complete success and 43% for two successes.
* Week 38: assuming Ling Qi didn't pull it off again... same thing, except almost certainly with at least one success already. The chance of having not broken through by the end of this week are probably about 2%.
* Week 39+: By this point, she's hit peak Physique. A single breakthrough action mixed in with the improvement of EPC and other arts this week and future weeks (overflow and EPC autos helping to recover any failures).

And she'll have completed Green/Bronze with about ten weeks to go before the tournament (fourteen weeks at Green, ten weeks at Bronze). That should be enough time to firm up her arts for Green, perhaps push to the next level of Green and/or Bronze and otherwise be ready. And she's not fallen behind on the social connections and kept the advantages of exploring and training with her friends the whole time.

The "try and do it all in one week" is, in my opinion, either the result of panic ("If Ling Qi's not Green/Bronze ASAP she's doomed!", if I may be permitted to exaggerate a bit) or over-emphasis on the pills ("they'll practically guarantee success!", ditto). As I see it, there's a certain amount of slack, and sacrificing those social actions at a point where Ling Qi is quite literally trying to decide her future is... less than wise.

(No, really - unless she manages to punt the decision a bit, Renxiang has more or less rushed her to decide now whether she'll marry for position, join the Cai household or stick with the sect/do something else. Clever of her to do so before Ling Qi has grasped the options fully, but there you go)

EDIT: I suppose it's a bit late now, since plans are already pulling in voters, but Ling Qi could've taken a breakthrough action this week; there was some uncertainty as to what a good fifth major action would be, and getting a leg up on the breakthrough wouldn't have been the worst idea. On a success, she's much closer. On a failure, she can push EPC bonus successes at it to recover and still be ready the next week to move forward.

-[X] Major: Do a Job
--[X] Wolfpack Hunt: A group of rinefur wolves have moved into the wilderness at the base of the mountains. Numbering nearly a score, with an alpha at the first stages of grade three, they cannot be allowed to remain. Eliminate the pack. 3 points for each slain wolf. 15 for the alpha.

-[X] Minor: Zhengui's pyre had begun to dim, shrinking no matter how much fuel you add. You should be there when he emerges
-[X] Minor: Speak with Han Jian, about Argent Storm and the Golden Fields. What is his home like?
-[X] Minor: Your feelings regarding Gu Tai are... conflicted, maybe you should speak with him a bit. You know where he is staying.

shamelessly stolen except for changed minors

anyway salt at Cai apparently being the only one to grasp basic salesmanship and drugpushing tactics aside, I do honestly wish people didn't kneejerk away from marriage. it's not that bad.

I believe the reason to suggest closed door is to maximize the effect of our breakthrough drugs. How many actions if any that might save I don't know.
Very, very, very little. Our less effective breakthrough drug gets almost nothing per action. Our more effective drug gets a lot, but only the first time we fail to break through - and we are unlikely to need 5 actions to get that first failure.

Frankly, I think there is merit in just not using FVM for the tournament, at all.
We could probably succeed that way, but it isn't necessarily our best choice.

Learning an art JUST to make FVM viable is effectively doubling the training cost of FVM, giving us one art for the price of two. Picking an art just to stack passives like that is for scrubs.

However, as long as we pick an art that is useful in its own right we'll be fine. For example, FZ gives some nice bonus dice but techs like AtW are solid gold in their own right. A hypothetical "Spiritual Zephyr" could be pretty great.

We would want it to focus on buffs rather than buffs/debuffs like FZ both because we want the passive dice skewed towards offense and because our art library is already skewed towards debuffs. Buffs also don't have to worry about friendly fire or paying qi to exclude friendlies from the effects, so we should probably pick some up for large battles anyway.

To ensure maximum dice we get an art that gives bonuses to spiritual attack rather than "music in general". WoG is that the former would give better dice, and we need this to be as high as possible. Plus, if we get a group buff spiritual attack will be way more helpful to most of our friends than music. And of course there's a list of other factors to consider.

Basically, if we completely flub our art choice we're screwed, sure. But the possibility of success is real as long as some forethought is put into selecting our art. And if we can successfully leverage FVM we're definitely better off. For example, when used on a two person team (one cultivator and one spirit beast) Despair of the Lost isolates both members with a single casting, giving us two for the price of one. After that, focusing them down 2v1 makes the match almost unfair. I would wait to see whether we can find a decent spiritual buff (maybe that's what's in the box?) before I start considering deliberately doing without FVM. Our build should remain competitive even without FVM of course, because a good build should remain functional even if one of its components is defeated, but that's not quite the same thing.

By the way, can I just say that while I feel the Meizhen action is more urgent than the Cai action, I'm still not entirely happy with abandoning Cai right after she volunteered her time to tutor us in bureaucracy and help our mom?

Vote for plan Let's Try This Out which has both Cai and Meizhen, and newly added Xiulan

Okay.

Well, for all of the people who want to not do the favor at all, at least until we can ace it, I hope you're all willing to do the full three then.

Rather than just argue for dragging it out forever and then doing the bare minimum.
Pretty much this. I want to do all three or none at all. The fact that we'll have a better chance of success as Green is cheery on top.
