Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

... where the heck did the ji come from, anyway? Did a bunch of people think "oh, that's unusual, let's go with that!"?

Oh. It's "Lu Bu time!" ... oh god >_<

nope it's this

Come on guys don't tell me that you wouldn't laugh your ass off if Han Jian winds up teaching Ling Qi to handle his weapon and wonder aloud about why every girl that trains with him gets to be interested in his sword (skills) :p

Vote Jian/Sword for humor!

They like the Meta humor and the name based jokes, which is the worst way to vote because the people in the quest do not get the reference or find it funny. Meta humor always falls flat if it escapes into the quest.

The people voting for Spears, are you willing to change your vote to heavy polearms to beat out the other options?

Alright, I guess I can do that

[X] Heavy Polearms
[X] Bow

Also, yrsillar has noted that a Heavy polearm will not require the strength stat, as a yellow cultivator can lift normal weapons with ease. Instead it will use our damage on our highest stat, that being dex.

So all of those who don't want to get Heavy polearms because "it would require strength" fear not! It doesn't require strength and we can use our dex as its hit dice.
If you want reach to keep enemies away why bother with a halberd whch instead of a lighter spear we can use for thrusting and slashing and will be less likely to slow us down? Plus Spears should have more arts for them than Halberds due to being one of the four great weapons.

Switching
[X] Bow
[X] Chain whip

It'd be nice if we try out a new weapon every so often so Fan Yu constantly gets beaten up someone who clearly has no idea what they're doing.

:p

............it's not meta-humor it's freaking pun based on a character having the same name as the weapon he used.

And why the hell are you singling me out as the reason people are voting for halberds?

Yeah. Like sword are sort of treated the best of the four great weapons and so are the best choice from a cynical point of view, but any of the four are better then anything else as far as melee is concerned.

If we wanted to we could probably add weights to it in order to help increase our strength. I mean, Heavy polearm is more likely to increase strength than a sword or unarmed skill. It is just going to be heavier than those by a long shot.

I don't have WoG that it will or can, but I don't see why it wouldn't have a better chance at doing it than swords or unarmed.

Well, at that point there are probably training talismans.

OMG WE SHOULD GET TRAINING TALISMANS.

Would it be too cliche for Ling Qi to go around wearing some sort of weight or restriction talisman that lowered all her physical attributes by 1 point to help her train? Or a - a qi sucking thing like that big guy - Kenpachi - in Bleach.

And then we go drop it and go: I was taking it easy on you before but (cracks knuckles) now you done fucked up.

We could, but the only reason to train strength is "we have maxxed other stuff, so why not".

Well, strength adds to our ability to run away so I wouldn't consider it completely useless - but yeah, reviewing the battles from before it doesn't have the greatest track record. Gan Guangli beat Hong Lin into the ground and she was a strength 5, meaning that Gan Guangli must be at least Strength 6 when his art is activated and even he couldn't escape from the metal thread restriction art that that other guy had. He might have been a yellow already (?), or they both might have been yellows already, but Zhou balanced the teams meaning that they should have stood a roughly equal chance of facing each other.

However, if you're making an argument based on 'what is most efficient xp-wise' then I'm going to have to say nah, we're too close to our theoretical dexterity-based cap for that to be meaningful.

@1986ctcel, you're getting to be annoying. Can you ease back on the constant calling on people to explain their votes? I know it's not fun to see your vote lose when people on the winning side don't seem to be putting the effort in, but they've probably just read the previous bunch of discussion and been convinced.

That said,

[X] Heavy Polearm
[X] Bow

So no, not making it up. Like, that doesn't mean yrsillar will use it, but mastery of 'sword' and mastery of 'brush' mean the same thing in many Xianxia stories by completely separate authors.
I hope yrsillar doesn't, frankly. It sounds like a "have your cake and eat it too" resolution to having a power-wank, "I hate society" character who is then inexplicably good at a defining trait of society.

Plus, realistically, they are in no way strongly related.

Also, flying swords! I still want a flying sword! Who else wants to actually fly while standing on a sword?

If you aren't pushing for something for a purely cynical reason, why is it no one has suggested the Guai? We no it's a weapon that gets used here, it can act like a Tonfa, club, short staff or hammer.

Has a good history with monks, is a martial arts weapon, and it looks like a cane at a distance playing into the whole 'subtle/hidden' weapon thing. Though I don't think that actually much of a thing. Still is cooler then 90% of what we could go with.

Why go with a heavy pole-arm that doesn't really fit us? A sword is boring but fits everyone, a Gaui is cool, probably less good then a sword for arts (but so is everything), but thematically fits our 'lowly' origins and has the whole versatility thing going for it.

... what are you saying here? The sword is the 'gentleman's' weapon. The Saber is the cruel weapon of those who hate society.

What do you mean doesn't fit us exactly? We are still in the moments where Ling Qi is figuring out what type of cultivator she will be, things will change and grow. A Heavy polearm might not be traditionally thought of as a weapon for her to use, but it fits with her desire to be strong enough to carry all of the weight she chooses to carry. It's going to be a heavier weapon, but that will have more power behind its swings meaning it's better at playing keep away with other cultivators than a sword would. She is not a gentleman or noble, so I don't know why a sword would fit her better than any other weapon.

I think considering how self conscious she is about her height and muscle mass it'd be out of character to carry around a massive two handed weapon. She would probably be uncomfortable with the idea of trying too hard to fit in with the noble ideal (like using a jian) but something uniquely her that is graceful and elegant would be perfect. Bonus points if it's something similar eough to what her awesome and elegant friend uses to get tips ;)

Why do you think that's even going to be represented mechanically instead of fluff descriptions at best?

So not being a literal noble means Ling Qi can't have class or grace or poise? I guess Meizhen was wrong about being a Cultivator making her a "Lady" too despite her low birth.
