Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

[X]Bow
[X]Glaive

I have seen the light my friends! Instead of pointed metal on a stick I will instead vote for the much more elegant curved blade on a stick!

Okay, could someone who's on the bow bandwagon give a list of reasons for it? Because to be honest, it's kinda driving me crazy. Am I overlooking something that makes bows amazing in-setting? Ling Qi's seen what, two bow-users, among the mooks that attacked her and Meizhen. And they sucked.

In-setting people have fast enough reactions to dodge a projectile they see coming reasonably well, can use wind (or other elements) to deflect them and in general prevent them from causing problems. The natural counter to those is to make sure they don't see the attack coming, to my mind (or the projectile being too fast to see). Fair enough, the bow can do that... at very long range for an ambush. Which I wager will almost never happen in Ling Qi's time at the sect, and probably not all that often elsewhere. Meanwhile, something like a knife? Can suddenly come out of a sleeve or from behind the back while the eye is occupied elsewhere.

Of course, in the mist, the arrow won't be seen coming in. But then you're back to throwing knife range, leaving me scratching my head over a bow.

EDIT: And then, the practicalities of Ling Qi fighting. She starts with a bow - and then, when they get in close, switches it out (taking time) for a halberd. Where's the flute and her very useful mist?

Or she starts with the flute... and the enemy is in close, meaning the bow isn't all that hot.

See, when I searched for different images of Ji, that type of halberd was one of the images that popped up.

@yrsillar if one of the weapons that are chosen has multiple variations, such as the Ji, will we be able to pick out the type that we want or will you decide what type it is?

I'll probably count Halberd and glaive together since there is some overlap there from what I can tell... maybe call it heavy polearm while spear is light?

@yrsillar, I guess Glaive and Chinese Halberd/Ji are two different votes right?

I love spears TBH.

Not sure if this stuff falls under spear or halberd though. Although TBF, if Ling Qi is going to sneak around her mists shanking people, a short sword would be better.

Those are Glaives friend, though I am happy to find another lover of them.

Glaives and Spears look alike, but they are as different in use as Swords are to Sabers and traditionally have different arts.

I disagree. Our fights won't necessarily be always against human opponents, as we will be doing a crazy number of sect missions. I would rather hunt with a bow than with a knife. Also, because bows are specialized at dealing damage at range, their DV will be higher and the hope is to get something armor piercing. This means that we can set up the mists, get into a position, fire the bow and then move and fire again. The mists will make it much harder to dodge the arrows and the better DV and potentially armor piercing means we can end fights faster with it.

Edit: The Qm has spoken! Gather all the heavy polearm wishers together to get the best glaive/Ji possible!

With the recent QM clarification I propose all lovers of heavy polearms vote for the above compromise?

@yrsillar How do we know which attribute works for attacking with a weapon during a clash. Is it a matter of the weapon itself (e.g., a guai is always str+mastery while our throwing knives are dex+mastery), a function of arts (E.g., ZB is dex, so we use dex when using ZB skills regardless of weapon) or a function of individuals (e.g., we have dex as our highest stat, so we attack using dex+mastery, Hong Lin had str as a higher stat, so she used str+mastery) or just a matter of preference/style?

If tied to weapons, is a heavy polearm dex compatible?

@yrsillar, Hong Lin was using STR as her base stat with her Guai, but Hang Dua was using Dex. How do we know if a weapon uses Dex or STR as primary stat?

Feeling conflicted, this is why I wanted to stay with knives :(
Polearms are awesome, especially for wind but they just don't seem like Ling Qi's sort of weapon. Too ostentatious. I'm kinda liking the chain whip idea, plus it'd sort of fit in with the plan to become a knock off (and eventually real) Bai. Also think it would be one of the best ways to get distance and complement wind abilities but this is mainly for Meizhen.

You know, I never really saw "bows do more DV than knives", beyond a general "knives' advantage is their versatility over range"; was there a bow's DV listed somewhere?

So your envisioned tactic is "put up the mist and debuffs, put away the flute and shoot for three or four rounds before the mist dissipates, then repeat"? I'm not sold, particularly as I see darting in at speed and shanking someone to do more damage than arrows.

@yrsillar, how does an arrow and a throwing knife compare for damage? Can armor-piercing show up on knives? Can they show up on arrows shot from a talisman bow, or would talisman arrows be needed?

Then in the interests of the GLORIOUS HALBERD ALLIANCE, I will restructure my vote to be more fitting.

Come at me if you dare, trifling sword users.

Its down to what the wielder is better at. Cultivators are, at yellow strong enough that the actual weapon weight is largely irrelevant even with a low stat like ling qi's. Only like really really heavy weapons have to be str, and only stuff like bows and whips are pure dex.

It hasn't really come up yet, but in a similar fashion stamina can replace dex as a defense stat, if you're just built to facetank like Guangli for example.

Heavy polearm and sword both at 17 since spear is light
Inserted tally

Because Chain Whips are cool, and Heavy Polearm are fun, and I really don't want to be a generic Xanxia protagonist.

That is why I want Heavy Polearms! Since the weight of the weapon doesn't really matter and its what skill the user is best at, a Heavy polearm doesn't have the negative of being a strength heavy weapon! Since we are in a mystical setting, there are going to be ways to stop people from getting through our guard, and so I wish for people to vote for Heavy Polearms!

What about meteor hammer? Would that fall under chain whip?

Could be quite a good harder hitting mid-range weapon that would mess well with our current build and aesthetic...

Changing my vote.
This doesn't immedietly drop knives does it? I like the knives versitility I just want to branch out a bit.

I encourage you to vote for what you want! Because Ling Qi after Instructor Zhou's second test had the spotlight shown on her, and refugee in audacity is a thing. Besides polearms are practical for mounted combat whereas a sword short is significantly less so.
