[X] Rikard Rockstrong, son of Hall Water-Watcher

Rikard seems fun, and the toughest fight we actually have a decent chance of winning. He's got a bit of an edge, but I don't mind losing here if he beats us, as he's clearly a scary dude even by the standards of this place and it won't be easy for him. Plus we get extra xp if we lose. We try our best to win, obviously, but if we lose we lose.

Fighting all three is a way to not only lose, but lose embarrassingly and look dumb for trying. Fighting Hall is more defensible, though we'll lose, but I think fighting a peer is more useful.

These people are definitely more Warrior trainned than us. We have higher Orthstirr than them, but are only only barely above the weaker two in combat pool, which kinda shows how much training they likely do.

I mean, these are not their weaker members. The only one with better combat pool than us is a Third Grade Berserk, which is an indication of extreme badassness just about anywhere. I think we compare pretty well, honestly.

Remind me again why we're pretty sure these guys are doomed?

They seem no more or less likely to be doomed than any other moderately badass locale, but I probably missed something again.

They have managed to become almost universally disliked. That's not a good place to be in, and likely to end badly in the long term. They're scary, but scary and unbeatable are different.

Here. Note the invisitext between the last two lines.
Striding towards the hall on the hill, a certain sense of unease strikes you as you can't help but notice the, well, the spoils of raiding around just about every corner. Trophies hang above doorways as thralls labor in the fields. Men chat about old battles as they discuss shares of this year's booty. Despite the fact that it's planting season, all anyone can seem to talk about is where the next raid will be.

...No wonder the Danes of Skane were suspicious of you. How many sons have been slain? How many daughters have been stolen?
'This is what happens when you are never challenged, when you are safe from all threats.'
For a moment, you can almost hear a certain someone's voice, but it was just your imagination playing tricks on you.
They have made a lot of enemies and become too dependent on their raids to the point they are neglecting their farms in planting season in favour of focusing on the next raid. When a disaster or two of a raid breaks their martial strength, they won't be able to take more food by force, they will have trouble working their farms due to neglecting their farming skills and there will be a ton of enemies waiting to jump on their moment of weakness.

Their neighbors all hate them because they're extremely war-like norsemen who regularly go and raid up and down the coast to get what they need/want. They can and probably will fight a glorious battle when people finally unite against them, and give as much as they take, but it's probably gonna be a bad one.

Luckily right now Denmark is in a succession crisis and the kings are warring so it's probably not gonna be for awhile.

When will you ever get another opportunity to fight three people at your level and they aren't trying to kill you?

I was more worried about looking overconfident...we do want to make a decent impression here. Is that not a factor?

There's also the factor that I'm not sure we learn much from getting our ass kicked that quickly...I'm skeptical we last long enough to learn much in that scenario.

We are nowhere near strong enough to fight all three of them.
I mean, we also seem to have more Hugareida than any of them, and are probably better equipped. they do have more martial styles, but thats likely cause of easier access to knowledge. Halla just isn't the kind of warrior that focuses too much on weapon skill- which is why she has a lower pool. she more then makes up for it in diversity though.
and note that those sound like they are among the strongest of the village, among our age bracket at least. and we clearly outclass all but the strongest of the three- even if not by a lot, we have more orth, combat pool, Hugareida, and likely more endurance and tricks too

I mean, not sure? he has a slight edge in dice pool and more frenzy, but we have frenzybane, more orth, and more Hugareida. we also don't know what specific fire Hugareida it is. if its ignition, its quite possible ours is higher- its as high as Steinnar's was. not assured of course, and in the unlikely event he has 8+ thats gonna hurt.
we also have Standstill, which is a really powerful Hugareida. likely more so then either sword or muscle. and a rare one he is unlikely to expect.

also are we somehow related to Heima smiles, of all people?

Thing is, as a relative unknown to these people, you're going to look at least somewhat overconfident no matter what you choose here.

Not if we win, was my thought. Or heck, even almost win. If we come real close, then we look like we maybe overestimated ourselves a little, but not a lot. If we challenge all three like we expect to win, we look like we don't have anything resembling a realistic assessment of their capabilities or our own.

Is there some benefit to us for taking this opportunity?

Also does this Twist need to be applied each turn or is it activated and then left on for the rest of the fight? I'm not familiar with how Twists work.
  • -Against the Odds (Cost 35 Orthstirr/7 Odr): When you are fighting against many enemies, for every enemy you are crossing swords with, you gain an additional +3 to every roll.

Maybe don't challenge them as expecting to win, but pose it as us wanting to get a good fight or practice fighting three people at our level and who aren't trying to kill us?
The Twist lasts the whole fight. It varies by Twist, but we asked on that one.
Ah, good to know.

I want to be bold after the QM hinting at it. It can't be worse than deciding to go after Berserkergang!Hooknails.

With QM commentary indicating that he three on one fight might be a better call, I'm now torn. We could probably weather their initial burst of attacks, then use TSS to take one out (probably Dandelion?) then engage their other melee fighter with Mire Ward up to render the archer's ranged options ineffective, forcing him to waste actions and then close with us...

There's a path to victory there, and I guess even taking out one or two of the three before going down would be pretty impressive. We absolutely need to use TSS as early as is Norn-approved or otherwise take one out very quick, though. Hmmmm.
