A sheep feels like a nice gift, but also not too much?

A whole slaughtered cow is like, a lot given how valuable cattle are. Even though we're rich, it's still slightly outside the norms for a casual polite gift I think. A sheep feels generous, but not too over the top, like bringing someone a nice but not overly expensive potted plant as a housewarming gift.

If we're doing livestock a sheep feels right, yeah. I have the vague feeling there's something better than livestock that would still make sense and be on hand, but it's probably just my imagination.

You're probably correct, honestly, but it's complicated a bit by not knowing a great deal about this guy. We might get a better sense of his deal and what he values and be able to choose a better gift in future, if we want to cultivate a long-term relationship where he gives us info on Drysalt or something.

That troll has a pair of spectacles so that's another future thing in the past just like plate armor and pencils. I'm wondering if time travel is actually a thing that's happening now.

I'm sure you're right and there's something better for this guy specifically, what might be my imagination is that there's a better 'generic troll bribe' we actually would've brought.

Well, remember the extended timeframe. There's been more time for things to get invented...the ones that are anachronistic have mostly just not spread or been popularized. Spectacles in particular don't actually require technology that didn't exist in the era (they had lenses), just an idea that likely didn't (putting those lenses in frames around your eyes).

I wonder how different troll-like species develop. I'm imagining sone sort of weird legacy thing vaguely resembling martial styles. Like if a friendly troll grows to be real powerful and develops some unique tricks if there will be a new subspecies of friendly copycats. Or maybe there are trollmothers who play an active roll in the process.

Not gonna lie, I kinda love that we just barged in and woke this poor guy up from his rest, peak annoying neighbor actions.

[X] Apologize for entering uninvited, introduce ourselves as his new neighbors and suggest that we've had previous bad experiences with trolls, and were perhaps mistaken as to the nature of our new neighbor. Offer something we brought (probably a freshly slaughtered sheep or something like that) as an apology gift/housewarming present.
-[X] Use Contention Connection and Light Touch to try and avoid violence, Goal Tell to see what the Troll(?) wants, and Cool Off to avoid going off half-cocked ourselves if things get heated.

The Troll seems an okay guy, let's see if we can have a new friendly neighbor.

'Troll-hag' was a term used for witches, iirc. Troll-mothers are definitely also things that exist.

Trolls are often used as fodder in spirit slap fights because they are quite dumb and thus easy to fool into working for peanuts, but they also naturally congregate around places of power—such as a spirit king's hall.

This tendency can be a major problem when a bunch of trolls suddenly appear and set up shop at a Thing-site, for example.

Does this mean, our land is doing pretty good since a troll set up shop here without any prodding?
Being an Odr cultivator might mean that our Farm automatically counts as a low-grade Place of Power, increasing with our own power.
This seems like a fairly polite and educated kind of troll. I wonder Halla's aspects of knowledge-hunger and diplomacy have flavoured the power and attracted a like kind of troll?

If he is a troll, is he an odr cultivator as well? If odr can make animals sapient, it could probably make trolls intelligent/articulate.

There was a post a few pages back from IF that 'troll' is a broad category covering many types of creature...this guy is unusual but Odr wouldn't be needed to explain it, and I suspect we'd have noticed the spotlight effect by now if he was an Odr cultivator.

...Ohhh, Huldra (or huldrekall for male Huldra?) could actually work.
Missing most of his back, and Huldra are known (in myth) to sometimes have a cow's tail, which could the thing moving in the sheets.

They tend to like charcoal burners, which fits our current character.

Do we know if this is one of those Trolls who get instantly stoned if exposed to sunlight?

Dwarfs seem to be inherently businesslike, whereas I don't expect trolls to be that way (or any way, in specific, universally).

I suspect aiming for being a good neighbor, and maybe a friend given time and goodwill, would be the better tack to take than trying to establish a super formal trade relationship.
