I am wondering if Halla could defeat anybody in a higher tier than her in the Valley. Maybe not Steinarr or Logi. But somebody of ower tier like Audrik or the Headsman firstborn.

Seeing her beat up Vidar would be great.

We could maybe beat Audrikr or someone else one step up...I'm dubious two steps up is possible absent ridiculous luck. Vidar is three steps up and would wreck us.

Summer 9/Asvir Visit 6.Final
[X] Upgrade Sword
[X] Mingle with the other members of the felag
-[X] Send the Twins home

-[X] (Crafting) Try to make something
--[X] Mail for Abjorn (+15 successes from Tools/Workshop)
--[X] Add runes "May this garment of the spear's downpour draw its strength from the hard walls of the ship of thought." - Hopefully allow it to share in the wearer's damage reduction
--[X] Using the shadow-bear's bone ash to enhance its capabilities (using one of its three uses)
--[X] Adding sufficient bling to be Realized, specifics for that to be determined based on our shopping trip. This will include the pelt of the shadow-bear, but _not_ for magical effect or as one of its three uses (and thus that's probably not mechanically relevant, just cool).
--[X] Make sure Abjorn is present and involved in the process
--[X] Potentially quenching it in Abjorn's blood or hearthroot oil depending on whether either is helpful and what they seem to do
--[X] Switch Forgefire Slots to Dice before starting and back afterwards
--[X] Spending ****13 Odr**** on the crafting, and burning Frami, Virthing, and Saemd (for +3 successes total) to enhance the crafting process

-[X] (Wolf-Monsters) Agree to join the Headsman's felag and go deal with the wolf-monsters (This Turn Only)

Mingling with the rest of the felag goes about as well as you can expect it to after your father reminded everyone of his status and strength. People clamored to be around you, your status as Steinarr's daughter improving their status simply by proxy.

Regardless of how stifling and claustrophobic the crowd made you feel, you never were one to let an opportunity pass you by! Reaching out and grasping tight with both hands, you made the most of a bad situation.

In doing so, you managed to familiarize yourself with the names of the top warriors in the Valley. Unfortunately, there were just too many to get much beyond that—though you did manage to glean the strength and standing of the Berserks in the crowd.

Not only that, but from socializing and asking after recommendations, you've managed to amass a selection of willing candidates for your expedition in the coming months. All in all, there are a few broad categories of people that want to join up for something in particular—with some level of overlap, of course. Everyone who was recommended to you wants to trade, but some would rather trade and raid or trade and explore or even a combination of the three. A number of Berserks also came recommended, about five in number.

Of course, you'll have to actually sort through the recommendations—and that can only really be done once they show up to apply, as there's no point in sorting when you don't even know if they'll show up!—but you can do that while you're getting the Wavedancer ship-shape.

After sending Tryggr and Trausti home with the valuables, you settle in for a night spent in Eric's house.

(The names and Berserk-Grades of the top warriors of the Valley have been added to the general power rankings chart)

Ting! Goes the hammer in your hand as you mark the place to strike.

Clang! Goes the sledgehammer in Abjorn's hand as he strikes where you marked.

Hour after hour, day after day, week after week, you work together to forge ring after ring. Together, as husband and wife, you stride boldly towards that golden, glimmering dream. Armor for a man with giant's blood in his veins. The bloodline of those monsters of the deepest of wilds runs strong through the veins of Abjorn and your children, to armor them well requires significant time, skill, and lots of sweat.

But many hands make light work. With Abjorn at your side, the work isn't quite so grueling. When you look over and see the focus on his face, you find your fatigue lifts just that little bit. When you see the soot mixing with sweat on his brow, the ash on your own doesn't bother you quite so much. When sparks fly and singe your hair and skin, the knowledge that he feels the same pain soothes your irritation—and stokes the fires of your heart.

More than once, you've ended up a pile of writhing limbs on the floor after a day spent hard at work.

But finally, from your blood, sweat, and loving tears, you and Abjorn together have done it.

Iron clinks together as Abjorn stands with the heavy slabs of his muscled back facing towards the rising sun. Light plays off the silver-and-gold-etched links as the iron sways across his body. Made from amber and shells both turtle and sea is the image of a bear's paw upon his chest.

He's not belted it to his waist—not that there's much to belt up in the first place—so it's simply hanging freely from his broad shoulders. Fortunately—or unfortunately, as your fantasies may lament—he's not moving those big muscles of his, so he doesn't have to deal with all that weight throwing him off-balance.

When he's in the light like this, the bear pelt about his shoulders is nothing more than exactly that, a the hide of a bear. While normally the pelt stops before it covers his shoulders, when he steps into the shadows it stretches long and wide, closing around almost his entire body as it merges with the shadows on the floor.

From testing you know that when the armor is swamped in darkness like now, the shadows actually start to repair any damages that have been accrued over battle. Of course, that requires the armor having taken damage at all! With the runes it has, that's no easy feat!

The runes you've added to the armor—which was done via a rather ingenious method of shaping and carving the links in such a way so that, when assembled, they come together to form the runes—extend his skin's ability to resist weapon-bites to include the mail within its aegis of protection.

Unfortunately, it does mean that the mail has to touch his skin if you want the effect to work, but you're certainly not complaining! Now, that doesn't mean he has to be naked under his armor. Like now, he'll be wearing trousers when going into battle—which isn't exactly a new experience for him, thanks to his near-permanent presence in the local wrestling competitions.

Of course, that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the view!

(Abjorn now has Realized Armor, who has taken the name of 'Shadeclaw' for herself. As you do not wear Shadeclaw, you can't hear her voice without poking her with seidr.)
(Shadeclaw is capable of granting her wearer access to her 31 points of orthstirr. She also can perform battle-repairs on herself while in shadows and is functionally immune to fire, thanks to having been quenched in fire-resistant oil. Thanks to her runes, she is able to extend her wearer's damage resistance to also protect her.)

As you approach the Headsman's camp with Abjorn in tow, you realize that you're a little bit early.

What would you like to do before the Headsman arrives?

AN: Apologies if this one is a bit sub-par or if the prose is overly purple, I had a bit of a weird day today and that may have bled through

No moratorium, I'm unsure if I have it in me to do another update today.

Nice! What are the stats on Realized Mail? We did make it so we should probably know those. I must admit I'm mostly just curious, though it would also give us an idea of what Quality in general means on Mail (which we've never been clear on).

I'll be back with a vote after looking at the Valley Rankings in more detail.

-[X]Folkmarr Manetaker

Is Folkmarr even there? He's not actually one of the best warriors in the valley. This is his dad's operation so he might be, but I'm getting the vibe Halla barely made the cut and she's more badass than Folkmarr by the chart.

Realized Mail, immediately after creation, is 30 Armor, +5 to Defense (+6 to Defense in the case of Forged Iron)
6 DR from Armor, 8 DR from the loadout used in the spar.
Our ridiculous husband sports 14 DR if he is using the spar loadout. 14.
Plus armor regeneration in shadow. With a wife that can make suns which cast shadows on him if there is anything between the two.

Well that's absurd. Excellent. That does mean we definitely want to reforge our own Mail in the near future, I think. Not to Realize it, but Wondrous Mail still kind of has to be a lot better than Superior.

Like, the difference between Superior and Realized is +4 Quality and makes for +13 Armor and +2 Defense. So...I'm guessing there's some rounding up there for level 9 and each level is, like, +3 Armor and each two levels is +1 Defense. Is that right-ish? Even if that's a high estimate, I bet Wondrous is at least Armor 24 and +1 more defense than we have right now.

-Audrikr Fishfighter

Also, just FYI, Audrikr's Berserk Level isn't listed on the chart.

Did we teach Shadeclaw how to stoke her aspects?

We haven't had time yet, but we could and likely should. Along with teaching her Reinforce Shield if possible.

That's not what the +6 to defense means, that just adds to defense rolls. Still absurd, but not that absurd. Armor does not normally add to DR.

That +6 is a bonus to defense rolls rather than DR. It's still worth basically as much on the defense of 2 whole grades of Berserk though, and it can grow.

[X] Socialise with the Headsman and the group.
-[X] Float our proposal that everyone gets an equal share of the carcasses, and the wolf pelts from this hunt should be sold on our trading expedition, as they'd probably fetch a better price there.
-[X] We could either buy them for a fair price and keep the profit, or they could be a donation, with the grain bought from their proceeds going to the neediest families in the valley.

Nothing like a free opportunity!

I think we can reasonably assume that if we write-in someone's name, then by the magic of plot, so long as it does not violate common sense, they're here for us to talk to.

Also it's not like our dad or Halfdan are here, as far as I recall, this isn't like, repelling an invasion of the valley, it's a hunting trip. I think Halla is probably well into the upper half of fighters here, with only Rattlespear and a couple others above her, or this is going to be like hunting deer with helicopter gunships.

Yeah, this seems good.

No, we were specifically told that we couldn't bring our retainers because this was an 'invite only' expedition for the baddest people in the Valley only. Some people who qualified may not have come, but Tryggr and Trausti, for example, are not badass enough to be here.

That could be overkill, but this is very explicitly a 'we brought the big guns' situation.

Chainmail over naked body? That sounds supremely uncomfortable, even for a (lowlevel) cultivator.

Couldn't he wear a undershirt beneath the mail on hus torso, and have the mail only touch his bare upper arms or something?

Man, if it wasn't for the fact that Abjorn can't fit into tunnels easily, can you imagine how busted Shadeclaw would be for fighting underground?

Hmmm, fair point. I feel like there's potentially enough of a gap between us and Tryggr/Trausti that we could be towards the middle, but fair enough.

Bit of a non-sequitur, but did you know that Kansas is the only state in the US that is actually able to properly cull its population of feral hogs? This is done via, no joke here, herding entire packs into prepared killzones, hunting via helicopter, and NVG-clad night-time hunts. We have a population of around 400 hogs while our neighboring state of Oklahoma has around a million.

So, the lesson here is that if you want to properly cull a population of destructive animals coming in from neighboring regions, you hit them with truly overwhelming force. Like, in this instance, bringing Steinarr to hunt some wolves.
