That was a joke guys, I don't think you can nonlethally subdue someone by hitting them in the face.
a hatred he'd buried a long, long time ago. It's not aimed at you, not in particular, just...
So how long is a long, long time ago?

Cause just four years ago Gabriel was referring to us as 'The Murderer's Daughter'. But four years isn't really that long, all things considered. Or three years, for that matter. Could it be all the way back when he was being bulldozed by Squires?

[X] Plan Gentle Persuasion

I really hope Gabriel has someone from his tragic backstory that he needs to kill. I'm okay with the proposed merchant trip to Wessex, but getting some Orthstirr from killing some guy would make it even better.

So, my plan, because I think the plan should emphasize talking him down if possible, and that Knee-Groin Trick is the wrong tactic to use here. I am tempted by Alectai's idea of waiting for him to exhaust himself, but am much less sanguine about our abilities to tank or dodge a Finisher.

[X] Plan Talking And Knockouts
-[X] Stoke Virthing and Saemd (+374 Orthstirr)
-[X] Burn a Calm Charge and stoke Frami again (+187 Orthstirr)
-[X] Invest 4 Orthstirr in Silver Tongue (-4 Orthstirr)
-[X] All attack attempts are intended to be nonlethal, and we are going to try and talk him down even as we fight.
-[X] 60d6 Attack (60d6 tricks)
-[X] 26d6 Defense (26d6 tricks)
-[X] 0d6 Intercept
-[X] Activate Slipstream (-16 Orthstirr)
-[X] Use Goal-Tell to try and make our arguments to talk him down more persuasive (-3 Orthstirr), and add Fight of Our Life x2 to the Silver-Tongue roll (26d6 total if there's only one...we'll add one use each to two different rolls if there are several) to talk him down
--[X] Try speaking in English, perhaps his native tongue will help?
-[X] Make 45d6+5 (w/Hugareida) Honed x12 Lightning-Charged Flashfire Cleave w/ Puncture (-28 Orthstirr), and up to two 30d6+5 (w/Hugareida) Orthstirr Enhanced x15 Lightning-Charged Stunner Slam Firebomb-Strikes w/Puncture (-39 Orthstirr each) intended to render him unconscious without killing him (and avoiding any shaming strikes)
-[X] Against his first attack release our Fast-held 3Fold Inertia-Arresting Throw enhanced with Orthstirr for +36 dice for a 60d6+9 defense (-45 Orthstirr) that should also trap him temporarily, hopefully giving us more time to talk him down.
-[X] Against his high powered sword attack, if it gets through our existing defenses, use a Contested Movement adding one use of Fight Of Our Life for additional dice (-3 Orthstirr, 14d6+5) with the counterattack being a Lightning-Charged Stunner Slam Firebomb Strike with Puncture added on (-24 Orthstirr) again avoiding shaming strikes, and if that fails use Focus Guard (-14 Orthstirr) if possible
-[X] Against his actual Finale get out of the way using a combination of Ember-Wing Cloak and Backstep enhanced with 4 Odr (-15 Orthstirr, -4 Odr) and if that doesn't work use one of the Sway defenses mentioned below (we have a 6th that we are saving for this).
-[X] By default use Sword Guard and Atgeir Bodyguard to defend against everything else. In response to anything that gets through them try and use Halting Vortex (-4 Orthstirr), and if something gets through that use up to five 60d6+9 Reinforcedx59 Sway defenses (-61 Orthstirr).
-[X] Tactics – So, the plan here is to continue using our very high Sword Guard and Atgeir Bodyguard to defend as much as possible, but with a lot of alternate defensive options layered on, and try and talk Gabriel down while beating him unconscious if he doesn't listen.

I will also say that I think Skippy's plan should also at least stoke Saemd, and maybe use a Calm Charge like this plan does. We need all the Orthstirr we can reasonably get this round, I think.

EDIT: Added Fight of Our Life x2 to the Silver-Tongue rolls.

Here's a couple of solutions I can see:

1) Wasted Finale:

Counter Gabriel's attacks until he starts his Finale. Wrap him up with 3 Folded IAT, exit stage left with EWF, wait for the Finale to go off when we're way out of range, then return back to check up on Gabriel.

Pros

* Doesn't require hitting Gabriel (much), lowest chance of killing Gabriel.
* We get to see a climatic Finale!

Cons

*If Gabriel as a way to handle IAT while channelling a Finale we're kinda fucked.
*If Gabriel's Finale burns up his Cultivation and/or Life, he's kinda fucked.

2) No Finale:

Just keep hitting Gabriel until he KOs.

Pros

*Straightforward and easy to execute. Highest chance of success.

Cons

*Involves hitting Gabriel repeatedly, which given Feudal Cultivation/general Non-Norseman bodies may be hard to fix.

===And some wacko solutions===

3) Talk no Jutsu

Talk Gabriel down. 2x Fight of our Life allows us to potentially roll a 12d6 + 14d6 Silver-Tongue, or a 26d6 check (avg 17 Successes + Friendly/Beautiful if relevant), which might work, especially if we shove Odr into it.

Pros

* In-character with Halla resolving exciting situations with the power of her voice.
* Callback to when Halla talked a Knight down and giving up all his loot.

Cons

* May have to use Odr. Ew.
* Unclear chances of Silver-Tongue working on an enraged Gabriel.

4) CALM DOWN

Use Seidr to Open Gabriel's Gate, then use a Calm Charge on him.

Pros

* Novel and interesting.
* Instantly solves the issue if it works.

Cons

* Multiple untested variables (Seidr on Christian Cultivator, Shoving Calm Charges onto someone else, etc), good chance of going horribly wrong instead.
* Involved mindmagic fuckery, which is something we're against.

Ooh...I wasn't thinking of using Fight Of Our Life on the Silver Tongue roll, but I should've been. I'm gonna add at least one there. Good call and added to my plan with one use right now.

@Imperial Fister how many uses of Fight Of Our Life do we have left?

Man... I want KGT to be the right answer... but it's not.

The point here is not just to solve the puzzle. The point is to help our friend. Getting taken down by an epic knee to the groin is going to be really very unhelpful for whatever he's going through.

So, after we hopefully save Gabriel from death, who's up for another trip to Ginnungagap? I don't think Gabriel is likely to let the "starting my saga" thing go.

Soo, his Finale is a massive AOE thing. How would Sway do anything about that?

I mean, do you think another option would do better? I could sub in an alternate rolled Trick if you do, but honestly if Backstep + EWC doesn't work we're sort of in desperation mode and probably screwed any which way you look at it, but it seems irresponsible not to keep trying.

Gabriel Quest is really annoyed at this turn of events.

I mean it's not even maxing out the Odr on Backstep + EWC, I would just keep trying to stack more Odr infused EWC really.

I think it is actually. Backstep can't handle more than 4 Odr...EWC could handle 5 alone, but I think the combo of the two is better than 1 more Odr given that EWC isn't even a defense by default.

And if one Perfect doesn't work, others won't either. I could try adding EWC and Odr to the Sway itself, I guess.

We really should experiment with what Odr does to our tricks. Especially the nondamaging one. Test out Odr Sickness Sear on a chicken. See if Odr Halting Vortex does anything special. What Odr Sidestep or Ord EWC does.

I mean, this seems like an immense expenditure of Odr for little gain. We know what it does...it makes the Tricks in question better. We can use it whenever we're trying to use the Trick, except better, and have a pretty decent chance of it working, while using it on the Trick as research would only tell us specific stuff we knew to look for already...and if we knew to look, we'd just try it when that stuff came up anyway, so what have we really gained?

Like, what does using Odr-boosted Sickness Sear on a chicken actually tell us? That it cures things faster, better, or both? We pretty much knew that already.

Have you used it yet? I didn't think you did, but I could be wrong. If you haven't, then you've got 3 left

Sweet, that's what I thought but I wanted to make sure.

Anyways, how was the update? I know I took something of a bold step here, so I'd like to hear your thoughts

Seems good to me. There being ongoing and unresolved issues with Gabriel was well foreshadowed and thus not a surprise, though the degree of them seems more extreme than expected, likely for reasons relating to cultivation.
