Cool. I think Steinkell is definitionally a year too old as well, since he was born immediately before we went raiding (the end of Year 4). The rest are fine, but his age is a continuity issue if it's not one year older than our oldest kid.

Well, keep me posted if something pops up; I don't understand the mechanics well enough to be confident of knowing when to use one.
What they do:
You know how this system works based on rolling d6 and counting the successes (distribution usually [2,2,1,1,-1,-1]) reward dice are dice you can add to any roll and that cant fail ([2,2,1,1,1,1]).
You can also use a reward dice to get a hint from qm.
Keeping for emergency use is a very typical thing. We also like to use them to rig the genetics rolls when making a new kid.

Generally speaking, Reward Dice are actively good to use for five things:
1. We can use them for Cultivation Hints from Imperial Fister. That's very handy.
2. We can use them to really weight the dice in favor of our kids getting specific traits (specifically, we can lock a Trait in for 2 Reward Dice or lock one our for 1). Super good, and the reason all our kids have all the stat-boosting Traits.
3. Spending them on percentile rolls to see if people survive has been a thing a couple of times now (at a 5% increased chance of survival per die spent). Very useful. Their effect on other percentile rolls has been a little erratic in how it works, but very real.
4. Really vitally important normal rolls (we added a couple to the roll to persuade Steinarr to not immediately go after Horra when we told him about Horra being nearby...this was a good decision).
5. They can be added as Training Dice. This can be really good if we want to raise something ASAP in an emergency (and is how we went from Sail 0 to Sail 4 in a weekend), but is usually not worth it otherwise, IMO.
You can technically add them to any roll (and, as others note, when used on such rolls they do not roll failures), but it's usually a bit of a waste if it isn't one of the above categories. Keeping them for emergencies is pretty normal, either that or spending them on hints are the most usual use-cases.
Alright, the update is coming along nicely. Dice rolls are done, research is progressing nicely, Steinarr talk is done, exploring is done, Aki talk is coming up next, and then the beginning of Asvir visit. I was hoping to get the first proper update for Asvir out today as well, but that's not happening lmao.

Aspect Reading
You're a little lost on where to start reading Aspects. You could do your own, but you already know those inside out.
Hmm... maybe you should go ask the person who taught you about them in the first place? That sounds like a good idea!
0~0~0 Aspect Study
As you summon your virthing, you find yourself almost... excited? The feathers of your virthing flow across your body, drawing forth the slight desire to run, to fly, to move! It's not very strong, just more or less the same intensity as your frami's ambitious hunger.
Hmm, interesting. What about your saemd? Does that have any effect?
The crown of iron spikes sprouts from your brow and you focus on your feelings. When nothing jumps out at you, you find yourself frowning. Why is saemd the one that doesn't have anything going on?
No... wait. Saemd does have an effect! While frami stokes your ambition and virthing feeds your active nature, saemd hones the both of them to a calmer, friendlier edge!
'Saemd is a crown, makes sense that it directs frami and virthing.'
Blackhand does make a good point.
0~0~0 Making Walls (Hamr (Labor): 6x2, 4x3, 3x3, 2x1, 1x2) 7 Successes
As you dig the first of the fencepost holes, a sense of rightness falls over you. That feeling stays with you as you dig the rest of the holes, only going away when you finish the job.
You wipe your brow, finding it slick with sweat. Nearly the entire day had passed as you worked in your soulscape. A day spent at work and you'd only dug the holes. You haven't even made the fenceposts yet! What were you doing?
Well, this will require more work, that's for sure.
0~0~0 Talking to Steinarr
The year, by the reckoning of the followers of Christ, is 8977 AD and you, Halla Skyfire, have just turned nineteen. Your children — Asgeirr, Sigurdr, Eyvor, and little Hallbjorn — are doing as well as can be expected. It's been a little crowded in Steinarr's house, what with the ever-growing number of children running around, so they're excited to finally have their own space to run around again.
A gaggle of your younger siblings, nieces, and nephews scampers by as you make your way towards your father. Drifa is at the head of the flailing mass of flying knees and bony elbows, which quickly devolves into a ferocious fur ball of 'violence'.
Draupnir tackles Leif, but Sterki grabs them both in a headlock — the trio of boys instant rivals, thanks to them being all around the same age. Drifa, however, is no shriveling maiden. She leaps into the fray with an all-too-familiar laugh as she kicks Sterki's legs out from under him.
You smile as cousin battles cousin. The world had better watch out, because if this is how they treat family... Well, their enemies will be few and far between, that's for sure!
Steinarr's off to the side with a wood axe resting on his shoulder. With the winter coming to an end, the firewood stockpiles will need to be replenished. He's off to the woods now, but you're sure that he wouldn't mind some company.
Grabbing an axe of your own, you head off after Steinarr — who is whistling a cheery, happy tune as he strolls along. Steinarr always did like the early summer the best.
He smiles as you start helping him fell a couple trees — which takes no time at all. After stripping the branches and sticks, you set to chopping it down to size. After a few hours of this on repeat, you take a seat on a fresh stump while Steinarr does the same.
He uncorks a leather skin and lifts it to his mouth. Cool water droplets roll down the side of his face as he drinks. Wiping his mouth, he offers it to you, which you thankfully take. After all, it's hard work you've been doing!
"So, what's on your mind?" Steinarr asks as you hand him back his waterskin. There's a flicker of amusement in his eyes, but mostly he's just happy to spend time with you.
"Well," you frown as you try to swing your legs, only to find that you're a bit too tall for this stump, "I was wondering if you would be willing to teach me how to farm better? I am going to start up my farm again, soon, and maybe you have some tips for me?"
The shadow of sadness falls across Steinarr's face as he slumps, resting his elbows on his knees. "Oh, right... that's... still happening..."
"I love you, dad, but I can't stay here forever."
"I know, I know..." He sighs, rubbing at his eyes, "it's just that, well, with your mother gone and your home being, well, attacked like that..."
'He's not ready to let you go, no true dad ever is.'
You roll your eyes, a chortle leaving your lips. "You make it sound like I'm never coming back! I'm only gonna be a few minutes away, you big, overdramatic farmboy."
Steinarr laughs and ruffles your hair, but you ruffle his hair back! ...Which leaves you both with messed up, ruffled hair... Damn, he's good.
"Well," he says as the mutual laughter trickles down, "I can at least teach you how to farm properly, right?"
You nod and hold up two fingers. "You can that, and you can answer these two questions of mine while you're at it!"
He snorts, a twinkle in his steel-gray eyes. "Alright, Halla, I'll play your game. What are your questions?"
"First, any tips on accurately reading a person's Aspects? And secondly, can I get a look at Crowfeeder's runes?"
Steinarr laughs as he runs thumb and forefinger along chin and jaw. After a brief moment of thought, he pulls Crowfeeder from his belt and offers it to you, "While I think on how to do this, why don't you look over Crowfeeder?"
You take the sword and draw it — its iron shining as the summer sun falls on it through the trees. You lay the blade across your thighs, the cold of the iron slowly sinking through the folds of your dress.
'Would you like me to read it, or?'
You shake your head, the corners of your lips twisting downward slightly. You won't be needing his help for this one. After all, there is very little obfuscation to it.
You read off the runes, your brows rising at how... just, how obvious it is. "When iron is damaged, it is fixed after it swings."
You didn't even need to think about it, it just... Gah!
"Really?" You ask Steinarr and Blackhand, your jaw hanging open slightly. "It's this simple? Where's the wordplay? The mystery? The stuff that makes it powerful?!"
Steinarr shrugs, "Not everything needs to be as powerful as possible. Take these runes, for instance, what would more power do to their over all effect?"
You frown. "Maybe... it fixes faster?"
"It's already fast enough for me," Steinarr shrugs again, "it doesn't need anything more than what it's already got."
Well, maybe he's right. Either way, there's still the other question to answer. "And the Aspect reading?"
He nods and stands up, gesturing for you to follow, which you do — after setting Crowfeeder to the side. "Right, well, hit your frami." You do as instructed, squinting all the while, and an aura of fire springs up around you. "And now I'll do mine."
Crimson fire leaps from his skin and the difference between yours and his is as obvious as the gap in age. Where your frami extends up to about an arm's length, his easily reaches twice his height and then some! While both are chaotic, spiky things, yours has easily quadruple the frenzied snapping as his.
Steinarr launches into his explanation as you observe silently/ "You can tell that someone's a berserk by their frami, as well as a rough estimate of how much orthstirr they have. Now, if they're limiting themselves, then their frami will be reduced as well, so that's something to keep in mind."
"Virthing next, right?"
He smiles, "Right."
You trigger your virthings at the same time. Just as with frami, the differences are obvious at first glance. Your cloak is made of scorched feathers while his is formed from overlapping swords edged with purple ropes of twisting thread. Letters in a language not your own are stamped across the surface of the blades. A little dog figurine serves as the clasp.
"Virthing is a bit more complex," he points out each part as he goes down the list, "the first thing you see is that I'm skilled with the sword, good enough to have earned a commendation from the Great King of Miklagard — which is what the purple rope is. The writing is Greek, a record of my service in the Varangian Guard. Virthing typically holds some measure of information about the history of a man and his various skills."
"Various skills? Surely there'd be some mention of your farming talents, right? And what about the dog?"
"The dog is my fylgja..." He trails off, eyes holding a sorrow familiar to you. His sorrow is the same sorrow Knight felt standing in his ruined flower field. "Once," he taps a finger against the iron hanging from his body, "these swords were plowshares. Once, I had a pair of brothers. Now I have neither."
"I... I'm sorry."
"Don't be, it's over now, thanks to you." Steinarr lays a hand on his shoulder, but the sadness still remains. A long silence stretches on between you and your father. "Well, it's time to do saemd!" Even though his voice is happy and cheery, the veil has still been lifted. Your father is a sad, sad man.
"R-right," you nod, hurrying to stoke your saemd.
Twin crowns of iron sprout from brows as you face one another. The difference, as always, is stark. Where your saemd is iron spikes, his is sword blades. Where yours are topped by steadily burning candleflames, his swords are wreathed in wildly blazing licks of flame. But the differences don't end there, no. Roots climb up the blades while wrapping in and out, holding the weapons in place. Charms dangle from the roots, an on-fire owl feather, twinned shields, a pair of interlocking rings — one of which is broken and scorched — a ship, an anvil, a woven tapestry, a fishing hook, a baby's swaddle, and a broken skull.
"Saemd is the most complex of all of them. It speaks of hugareida and of family — though virthing often contains information about that too." Steinarr doesn't say much after that, talking about his virthing must have taken a lot out of him.
(Steinarr's Plant Lore has been added. +8 Training Dice until the end of the year)
(Crowfeeder's Runes added to decoded runes.)
0~0~0 Sending your fylgja to explore the fields (Hamingja: 6x3, 5x2, 3x3, 2x4, 1x4) 5 Successes
While exploring through the fields, your owl stumbles across some rather odd tracks. They belong to some kind of animal, by the looks of things. It's got paws ending in six long claws. Big too, if the depth of the pawprint is anything to go off of.
Hmm... this might be something to worry about. Or it might just be a curious critter come to see what's going on. Either way, you'll have to follow these tracks if you find any more. Repeat visitors won't be tolerated if you can help it!
0~0~0 Aki has come to say thank you
You find Aki standing under a tree at the edge of your property, his face carefully composed. You slow to a halt as the slightest frown tugs at his lips. His eyes are screwed shut and his raven perches up in the branches of the tree. His breathing is deep, yet ragged — like he's trying not to cry.
"Aki?" You call out to the fifteen-year-old, who shudders at your voice. Dread creeps up your spine as goosebumps texture your flesh. There's something wrong, seriously so.
He wipes at the fresh water wetting his eyelids — the sign of imminent tears. "H-halla..." he takes a deep breath as he sways unsteadily, "y-you are my best friend."
Oh... shit.
"A-and I need you to know t-that, b-because," he sniffles as his shoulders shake. You step forward and draw him into a hug as he starts to cry.
His hands grab fistfuls of your dress as his body is wracked with sobs. Heavy tears stream down his face as he hugs you as tight as he can, not wanting to let go. You hold him for a long, long time — only letting go when he does.
After what felt like an hour of tears and sobs and sorrowful wails, Aki draws away. He sniffles as you clean his face with a soft cloth — which you had started carrying because, well, babies are very messy little people.
"Dad's... Dad didn't take my, uh, my 'absence' well," Aki begins again, this time with a far steadier voice. You're not entirely sure when it happened, but you're sitting on a large root next to him, "he said that he's done with the Hading, with the casual disrespect everyone throws at us. If... If I didn't have you, I would feel the same way..."
"He's leaving, isn't he?"
Aki bobs his head, just like a raven, "To Vestfold, yeah, where his cousins live."
"Are... are you going with him?"
Aki is silent for a long while. Eventually, he offers a noncommitting shrug, "I... I don't know."
You say nothing, simply letting him continue when he's ready.
"He's, Runar's my father and I love him, but I also... You've done so much for me, more than you know, and I can't just betray that by leaving, but..." he slumps, a shadow passing over his face, "Dad's sacrificed so much for me, when it would've been so much easier to just let me die in the cold. I killed mom, after all, I would've deserved it! ...But he didn't. He kept me, even naming me after his own damn father. Blind, runty, useless me! What an utter waste of a name!" He waves a hand at his small stature, a look of utter disgust on his face.
"Maybe you just haven't hit your growth spurt yet?"
The raven caws.
"You're better than that, Halla," He sneers, "so don't bullshit me. I've not grown an inch since I was twelve. What, are my eyes gonna suddenly start working?"
"I... uh," you rub at your elbow, a grimace on your face, "I'm sorry."
"It's whatever," he waves it off before continuing. "You've done a lot for me, but so has dad." He shrugs, sighing, "Do I go to Vestfold with my father or stay here with you? I don't know, I can't decide, so you tell me."

0~0~0 Asvir Trip! (Asvir Happenings: 2)
It's not easy being in Asvir, not after that conversation with Aki, but...
You can only hope you made the right choice, if there even was one.
Regardless, there's things you have to take care of in Asvir. What do you do first?
[ ] Go to the Seeress and begin learning seidr
[ ] Go to the markets
-[ ] Write in what you're after
[ ] Speak to the Headsman
-[ ] Write in what you want to speak to him about
[ ] Hey, Gary Tuskpuncher is selling these weird, cheese-covered sticks of bread, maybe you should go buy some?
[ ] The raiding trials are about to start, go observe them!
I can't say I didn't see it coming, but Oof nonetheless.
I think he should go with his dad though, it's not like we'll never see him again after all, we've got business in Vestfold after all, and Family is Important.
That aside, in our discussion with Steinarr and the Plant Lore giving us a pile of extra Training Dice, did we also hear about any good Farming/Labor Tricks @Imperial Fister ? Also, shouldn't the fact we only put 1 die into Security mean that it's going to advance by 1?
Also, Sword and Helm-Trick should be at 4 each thanks to Sten's help.
That aside, Sword-Strike is acutually pretty nice? It's got an innate Fold effect apparently in that you can double the Orthstirr to get two attacks for the same investment. It's simple, but handy.
And yeah, it looks like the Soulscape Fence Building is going to be a big die sink, but it's a major pillar of our Cultivation so we're going to have to pour as much in it as we can to polish it to a fine sheen.
Not always. When starting new Tricks, even single dice often (though not always) get rolled.
.
.
.
As for the actual vote, oof. I have no idea what we should say to Aki here. The decision of what to do first in Asvir is minor in comparison.
Oh wow, Sword-Strike is actually better than I thought.
Pay twice the cost and it's an automatic double-tap with any other Attack.
I guess we've seen now how Steinarr does his whole "Attack like a hundred fucking times in a single move" nonsense, huh? How's that work anyway? Is it just copying the base die investment of initial strike, but using the Sword Hugareida instead of anything else that might be in there?
That aside though... I mean, Runar's Aki's father, and their relationship is good. You don't abandon Family, not even for your best friends.
And again, it's not like we're never going to see him again either. We've got plans to go to Vestfold before too too long after all.
That aside, in our discussion with Steinarr and the Plant Lore giving us a pile of extra Training Dice, did we also hear about any good Farming/Labor Tricks @Imperial Fister ?
There's one that lets you know where to sow a field to produce the most crops possible. Another one that lets you tell at a glance when something is going to be ready to harvest, allowing maximum efficiency of harvesting.
After all, it's not like we're never going to see him again, we've got a ship for crying out loud, might be a few years before we can get things fully sorted out to hop over that way, but his father needs him too, and we don't want to be the one who severs that connection.
There's one that lets you know where to sow a field to produce the most crops possible. Another one that lets you tell at a glance when something is going to be ready to harvest, allowing maximum efficiency of harvesting.
Anyway, I guess the way the Soulscape Wall Project works is that every training die we put in that is one more Labor roll? Targetting a specific total number of Successes?
[X] He goes to Vestfold with his father
-[X] Tell him we're coming to visit Vestfold in the next few years (though he should keep it quiet as we do have enemies about in those parts), and will see him then and would welcome him joining us at that time if he wants to.
We need to make him a going away present.
[X] Hey, Gary Tuskpuncher is selling these weird, cheese-covered sticks of bread, maybe you should go buy some?
Seidr can wait. Garlic bread is always top priority.
That's fair, but at the same time, Aki is 15...he'd likely be expected to move out and get his own life within the next couple of years anyway. On the other hand, he is only 15, spending the next couple of years with his father before doing so makes sense.
The same would apply to his dad, since he'd likely be coming with us on any expedition there.
Hmmm. I think this:

Given how much work it is, I think we want to not have to redo it, so I'm thinking we go back to putting it off until we complete Security, but we also put a bunch of dice into Security this coming turn to try and finish that off. Like, 8d6 or 9d6 Training Dice into Security Skill-Trick or something like that.
