[X] Part of the band lays traps outside the troll's cave while the other study the runes

I'm down for a timed challenge (if I'm off work before the vote closes at least)

Right, with the Challenging having been issued, I've got some preparation to make, namely, making sure I've got enough food to power my Brain.

Fortunately, on a whim, I made preparations for my favorite dish this morning, so let me get to preparing that.

Hm, fire is typically a weakness of trolls that I see in fiction, on top of sunlight. Is fire actually a weakness of trolls in Norse myth, or is that something that was made up?

Not really. The only definite weakness is that they turn to stone in the sun. They're also a bit dim-witted, but that doesn't mean that they're straight up morons. They're just a bit slow to realize things.

One thing to note is that I won't be able to do any more updates for today, just to be clear.

I've got some plans with some friends.

Oh hey, just noticed something.

A scorn-pole is a way of forcing curses upon those it is directed towards — curses and nid, depending on the reason. For such a thing to be erected not only on your father's lands but also pointed at your father's home, there would need to be a potent, heavy reason for it. A reason that simply doesn't exist.

There's Mental Fuckery afoot, because Halla knows one very good reason why someone might want to point a focus of Elemental Evil aimed at her father, and yet it never occurred to her that "This is another of Horra's tricks?"

That might be important later.

What I got from that was that for a scorn-pole to work, there has to be a weight of truth behind the accusations involved, some wrong that's being addressed, something like that.

Again, I'm curious how this relates to Sten and Steinarr slaughtering hundreds of troll-men on their trip.

Maybe she means it in a "Father has done nothing that would justify a scorn pole to call out his nid" way rather than "why would anyone do something like that?"

That's how I interpreted it, yeah.

This was my first thought as well, but that was literally self defense. If the troll could use it as justification, then Horra could definitely use his own situation similarly, and Halla would presumably be aware of that.

Remember, technically, from Horra's perspective, our family started this fight...that was after his father killed the Seeress's father, but from his perspective Hallr had no reason to get involved and kill his father (and, indeed, Hallr's reasons for doing so were some combination of romantic and mercenary rather than entirely moral), so killing Hallr's sons was normal blood-feud stuff from a feud already begun, not him starting something. Like, the methods he used make that a dubious claim in some ways, as does him targeting the Seeress's sons specifically, and the whole 'foulest magic destroying the land and innocent nisse' definitely makes him the bad guy, but he probably believes it.

I mean, the sidestory is just an in media res excerpt, right? We don't know why the troll-men are attacking or what Sten and Steinarr were doing that provoked them. Unless I missed something, which is certainly possible.

It's also possible the scorn-pole called the troll. Hopefully we find out tomorrow.

I mean, they were literally complaining about having to fight at all when they just wanted to get where they were going, so it seems unlikely that they're the ones who started it.
