Yeah, it happening now and not a turn later is the reason for a lot of my decisions and prioritizations the last couple of turns (most notably how worried I was about not having Halting Vortex at Refined, but also aiming for at least Rough Trick level on the Ignition stuff, and even trying again on the draugr poem immediately, as more orthstirr for this fight would be great).
And yeah, we're actually well ahead on combat pool as well as hugareida (we have a 29-31 before gear depending on our rolls this turn, and good mundane offensive options paired with good defensive hugareida)...I think we're as prepped as can be expected all things considered.
We're honestly notably better prepped for a straight fight than we are for the other aspects of going on a raid, though of course we have at least one more turn after this to prep for any raid stuff...assuming we survive anyway.
No worries, we're heading into things about as well situated as we could be, I think, and I maybe did go overboard on the Halting Vortex stuff...I just super didn't want to be sitting here, waiting for that final training roll, not knowing even now if we'd have it at Refined for the boss fight. That would not have been a fun kind of tension even if the odds had been heavily in our favor that it would be.
As is, I think we're probably fine in terms of stats even if our rolls go really poorly on this training cycle, though we get some more options as long as the Ignition rolls aren't complete garbage, which is a good place to be in. Whether that's enough to secure victory is another question, but I think we've prepared about as well as we can.
Oh right, should we ask for some kinda cleansing flames trick next turn?
Halla did pointed out how gross the after training sweat was... but hopefully, its usable against poison and other stuff too.
Not sure if the clothes would survive though...

Hmmm. Interesting idea, but I suspect more Campfire's area than Ignition's. Basically, we should ask, but I suspect the answer is 'no', though I'd be pleased to be wrong.

Finally...
Finally.
Finally!
You've finally done it. You've finally refined Leaping-Cleave to a decent level of refinement!
And it only took you...
A couple years...
You groan, flopping to the ground. Steinarr eyes you with a bemused look on his face.
"Finally got it down?" He shares a smile as he sits down at your side. "Good job, I know you put a lot of work into it. Must feel good now that you've gotten it."
"You've got no idea," you breathe out your smile as Steinarr chuckles, eyes distant with memory. "But, uh, I've got some questions about some tricks I've been thinking about."
"You're relentless, aren't you?" A soft frown floats across his face as he purses his lips. "Alright, then, you ask me your questions and then I'll ask you two of mine."
"Sounds good to me." You shuffle around until you're facing him. "Alright, then, the tricks..."
You launch into the list you prepared for today's session as Steinarr thinks each over thoroughly.
"For defense, I would probably go with some kind of spinning staff move, since you've taken to your atgeir so well. Maybe some kind of 'batting aside' trick. For dodging I would suggest either Sidestep or Backstep Trick, which are both rather common and fairly cheap orthstirr-wise. Backstep's a tiny bit more expensive, but it'll take you out of the line of fire better than Sidestep will. Up to you which one you want to pursue." He clicks his tongue against his teeth. "As for movement, I'd probably suggest Leaping or Hastening. Leaping Trick gives you a solid jumping trick and the Hastening Trick'll get you places quickly. And for throwing..." He grimaces sheepishly, "not something I'm especially good at. I can teach you Recall if you want?"
You purse your lips, not overly excited at the prospect. "Sure, but, uh, what about those afterimages that I saw?"
Steinarr blinks. "Oh, yeah, those. Sorry, I forgot to teach you about those..." He deflates a little, "Nine Realms, I'm a bad teacher. But, uh, anyways," he straightens back up, "those are what are known as 'Folds'. Essentially, by 'folding' your hamr over itself, you can make multiple swings at once. Here, let me show you."
Steinarr hauls you to your feet and guides you through the motions. Sure enough, an afterimage flickers into being about your limbs.
"I'm not exactly the biggest proponent of Folding attacks, as I feel that they leave you too vulnerable," your father shrugs as he sits back down, "but they have their uses. Like when you've got someone on the ropes and just need to power through their defenses. Works great then, unless they manage to escape...." He frowns as you sit down next to him.
"You had questions for me, right?" You ask and he breathes out the side of his mouth.
Running tongue over teeth, he regards you with a careful look. "Halla, what are the Three Fundamental Truths? I'm sure you haven't forgotten them."
You blink, confusion clear across your furrowing brow, but you oblige him all the same.
"The First Fundamental Truth: Power Requires Sacrifice."
"The Second Fundamental Truth: All Men Die."
"The Third Fundamental Truth: Memory Is Forever."
It's almost as though you're a child again, just starting to learn the basics of the world, rather than the near-adult woman you are now.
"Good," he nods, pleased with your memory. "Now, why did I have you do that?"
Your mouth hangs open as you find yourself lacking an answer.

Fire truly is a beautiful thing.
You'd known that since you were young, but now...?
Now your blood sings to the tune of the crackling blaze.
Who knew that playing with fire was so much fun?
A ball of tightly-packed fire spins violently a mere inch above your cupped palm. It comes to you as naturally as breathing.
'Simply by virtue of being one of my favorite Ignition Tricks, Kindle Spinner was once known as my 'signature attack'.'
You flick your hand out and Kindle Spinner detonates with an extremely violent snap into a directed blast of fiery death.
Willing a second Spinner into existence, you give it an underhand toss. It spins from your hand and bounces across the snow-strewn ground like a stone skipping over a lake. It detonates on impact with the snowy mound you've been using for target practice.
"Simple, yet versatile," you grin as you send a third hurtling down into the half-melted snowman, "I can see why you liked it... It is a bit expensive, though," you say as you note the drain on your orthstirr.
'Such is the way of things.' Blackhand muses before nudging you, 'Now, go give your other tricks a shot.'
You grumble as you're forced away from your fun new toy.
Planting your feet shoulder's width apart, you bend your knees ever-so-slightly before throwing yourself into the sky with nothing but your raw hamr carrying you up.
All-in-all, you get respectable air. It's not the best jump you've ever made, but five-times your height is a solid attempt for a standing leap.
As you fall back to the earth, your virthing unfurls around you like a mantle of fire. Jets of flame blast from beneath its folds, keeping you aloft at great cost to your orthstirr.
'You don't have the orthstirr to do any more than control your descent, but Ember-Winged Cloak will hopefully serve you well in the future.'
Touching down, you breathe deep as you call upon your frami and gain an aura of crimson fire. You'll need a little bit more orthstirr to wield your third trick, thanks to the utterly absurd costs of Ember-Winged Cloak, but it's nothing a little stoking won't fix.
Drawing Sagaseeker, you spin the catlike atgeir around before coating it in burning orthstirr. Taking three skipping-steps forward, you bring it down on the mostly-melted snowman's dripping head.
The snow explodes into a flurry as a fiery eruption sends boiling water droplets scattering.
Some land on your skin, but your natural heat resistance makes that a nonissue.
'Firebomb-Strike isn't prohibitively expensive... but I'd wait till you refined it more to use it, if I were you. Which I suppose I am, technically.'
You tune Blackhand out as he proceeds into one of his musings as you yawn, turn, and begin the long walk home. After all, it's going to be Yule soon!

0~0~0 Aki and the Meteor
"So, you ready?" The small, blind child asks as you emerge from the woods.
You nod, determination written deep in your eyes. "Yeah, let's do this thing."
"Great! Try not to explode!"
...
...You explode. You explode a lot.
Honestly, it's a good thing you realized your birthright before coming here, else you probably would've gotten badly injured by now. Fortunately, it was only a few light burns. Barely any bone was even exposed!
"The recreations are perfect, so it's not you that's making the errors," Aki strokes his raven as he scowls. "What gives? It's almost like..." He trails off as you poke the bone in your arm. "Halla, can you hold up the smallest amount of orthstirr you can manage?"
"Uh, sure?" You do so, the ball of crimson power is roughly the size of a pair of clasped fists.
Aki tsks, clearly annoyed by something. "Is that as small as you can make it?"
"Yeah?" Where is he going with this?
"Well, whatever the makers of this use as power is way smaller, like a... I dunno, a fish egg or something."
"That's..." Your brows shoot high on your head, "that's really small. How the heck do they do anything with power that tiny?"
"Beats me," Aki shrugs. "But, uh, I don't think that this is the way we're gonna get in there, not with small power being a requirement."
You blink as realization storms overhead. "Wait a second, I know a guy who has small power!"
"You do?" Aki clearly has doubts, but you brush them aside with glee.
"Gabriel Blackstone, thrall and Squire. He's got the manacles on, so that should restrict his power, right?"
"Yeah, that... That might actually work!" Aki leaps to his feet, a smile on his face as his raven takes to the sky. "Can you go get him?"
You wince as you pause. "Well, he and I are a little bit at odds and since I'm not his master..."
"You can't order him to do the dangerous thing of shoving his small power into the happy-explody fun-time ball." Aki finishes for you, snark dripping from his voice.
"Exactly."

You watch as Steinarr looks over his shoulder for a long moment before carefully creeping into Sten's forge.
You raise a brow and curiosity killed the cat.
Creeping up to the sheet hanging in the wind — that served as the door to the forge — you listen in as Steinarr begins to speak.
"Sten, I need a sword worthy of Halla." Your father declares with pride in his voice. "I need something I can give to Abjorn so that I know he'll be able to keep her safe." His voice drops to a whisper that has you straining to hear. "I need steel."
Sten's hammering falls silent for a long, long stretch of time. "Do you know what you're asking me to do? Because it is not something done lightly."
"It's Halla."
Sten sighs. "Yeah, you're right. I'll... I'll have something ready by the wedding."
"Thank you," Steinarr says as his footsteps approach the cloth flap of a door. You stifle a squeak and dive out of the way — which just so happens to be into a pile of snow.
A steel sword as a wedding sword? That's a heck of a powerful statement!
It also revealed something you'd long since suspected, but only now had it been confirmed.
Sten knows how to make steel.
Very interesting, that.

AN: There's no turn-planning today (besides the poem vote, of course) because tomorrow is your boss fight. I was intending to have it start today, but, uh, I may have stayed up all night because I was too excited. My bad. That's why there's anything weird, if there is anything weird.
With that in mind, I will now reveal the creature you will be fighting.
You're going to be facing a Nisse, more or less intact.
Hmmm. Interesting idea, but I suspect more Campfire's area than Ignition's. Basically, we should ask, but I suspect the answer is 'no', though I'd be pleased to be wrong.
That would be totally reasonable yeah, but consider: Ignition is about explosion and getting to places. it gotta get out but all the bad stuff is in the way, so it gotta push them out of the way (perhaps use them for some extra oomph but the consumption is more wildfire's stick)
Yeah, we've now got a moderately expensive but probably powerful middle-range attack, a stupidly expensive Jet Mode (Which would have by far the greatest Gainz to Perfect simply based on how it's limitations are the expense, rather than anything else. Get the Orthstirr cost to 0 and it becomes stupidly good), and a damage adder that'll be usable once we finish Refining it.
Not bad.
...
Huh.
Come to think of it, Perfected Ember-Wing Cloak is almost true flight, isn't it @Imperial Fister ?
Random question, because I feel like I missed something. But did Abjorn and Steinarr actually go raiding this year, like they said they would last winter?
Random question, because I feel like I missed something. But did Abjorn and Steinarr actually go raiding this year, like they said they would last winter?
Huh. Man we've got so many things we still need to level up. Our tricks need refining, we still need to get a bunch of non-combat stats or level pur current ones up, and (admittedly, this might just be me) our weapon stats such as Chop, Pierce, Bash, etc. could use some work too.
Nah, the average 20 year old Norseman also have higher weapon stats than us, too. However Sagaseeker is pretty ridiculous, not to mention we have Thievesbane too, so our dice pool is actually way higher than the average 20 year old's. I also like to think that we have more hugareida (as in, more tricks with our hugareida) but I'm not 100% on that one.
Concerning your question, on the other hand... frankly, I don't believe we'll be mastering a trick any time soon. The only way we could do it is if we dumped all of our dice in a single trick and somehow got lucky. Like, we have a lot of other things that those dice could be better spent on.

The only tricks that really need refining are Ignition which are cheap. We certainly need more non-combat and combat skills, but the standard Norseman of 20 has something like Chop 4, Glima 2, Bash 2, Defend 2, Dodge 2 (based on theoretical combat pool and him having an axe). We, meanwhile will probably have something like Chop 3, Glima 3 (we're 1 success away here), Defend 3, Dodge 3, Bash 2, Pierce 2, Throw 2. We do need another point of Chop, ideally, but we're really doing pretty well all things considered and the point of Chop isn't urgent, IMO.
We actually have more successes invested in combat skills than that 'average 20 year old' we're just more well rounded and defensive than he is, as opposed to specialized.

I also like to think that we have more hugareida (as in, more tricks with our hugareida) but I'm not 100% on that one.
I suspect the average Norseman actually gets almost as many dice from items as we do (they likely have a +2d6 weapon, a +2d6 sidearm, and a shield for +1d6). Our combat pool is higher because of all the different skills and our ability to apply them all. And yes, our Hugareida are much better now that we have two of them and 6 tricks with them (sure, two of them are rough, but only two of them).
#1: Are we getting our yearly +3 Orthstirr from Deeds before the fight?
#2: Does the above +7 Orthstirr include the drengskapr bonus? Or does that not apply to poetry?
#3: As was discussed, can Ignition theoretically do some sort of 'purifying flame' thing to get rid of dirt and poison, or would that be Campfire only?
So I don't know how the GM is running this, but I can speculate and ramble a little.
Nisse is something like gnome, dwarf, brownie, goblin, kobold, redcap. In Norwegian, it often appears paired in the expression "Nisse(r) og Troll" which you can probably guess at the literal translation of - but since I know a lot of people here are familiar with Warhammer Fantasy, an artistic translation using its connotations might be "Goblin and Orc", a pairing of the small Cunning one and the large Brutal one, cut from the same cloth and equally willing to ruin your day in different ways.
I expect a figure who's full of nasty tricks and fights dirty, quick and stealthy, possibly some magic or supernatural secrets indistinguishable from magic.
