Fair enough, I totally missed the crafting trick bit. Does Climb fall under Crafting Tricks then? What about things like Tracking and Stealth? Those all seem like they should be normal tricks if something like First Impression under Silver-Tongue is.
i think climb, track, stealth and such out of combat tricks just lets Halla know how to do that particular action within the skill, basically, unless we have it unlocked, she won't think of using it. at least, not without a precise write in.
I'm most likely wrong, but that's how those came off to me.

That's certainly a valid interpretation, and likely puts them under Crafting Tricks (though those could maybe use a name change if things like that fall under them as they aren't really crafting...'Category Tricks' because they just allow a category of action? No, that's awkward), but something like Tracking costing Orthstirr to use in the same way First Impression does would also make mechanical sense and put it potentially into standard trick territory.

Add in that there's not currently a listing as to which is which and knowing for sure is important to our future plans in various ways, and I think an answer to the question is useful.

"There are two categories of tricks, Skill Tricks and Action Tricks. Skill Tricks are tricks that unlock knowledge or skills, like painting or climbing. Action Tricks are tricks that do a specific action, like striking something really hard or uncovering hidden tracks.

Action Tricks have a leveling scale while Skill Tricks have a standard of 6 successes to get. Skill Tricks can also have their own 'sub-Action Tricks', which follow the leveling scale."

That's what I'm thinking of doing with tricks.

Seems like Passive tricks are a thing as well now, or... well, if you dont mind me borrowing from a book i love, secrets.
(which is fun, because said secrets also included traveling in the shadow, turning into beast or stuff like splitting space, aside from normal knowledge like languages, how to smith and such, nice accidental symmetry!)

Not sure how the passive/craft skills would be leveled though, or what would be the effect of the differing levels...

Edit: ninjaed by OP... maybe i should try to write faster.... nah

Sounds good to me. I mostly just want some sort of indication which possible tricks fall into which category so we can plan appropriately.

The funny thing about all these system changes though?
IC, we know Halla is still just at the beginning of learning these things, and the whole of the North, with a helping of reality vs stories.
OOC, we know that the Norse cultivation system is really inefficient, so the system change might as well represent Halla's growing knowledge as well as her mastery at putting it into use.

Really wanna make her a scholar and the first to systematically teach this stuff, either just to her kids or to as many as their parents let her to.
But that is VERY far in the future....

Alright, I noted down which are Skill-Tricks and which are normal tricks. It's in the Skill List.

Also, I'll call voting in an hour-and-a-half, so vote while you can!

Well, looks like Stigard is gonna stew in depression for a time... unless we do drag him on the expedition to the mystery farm.

So, when you say that you're bringing your friends along, do you mean Gabriel as well?

I've seen a few people call him 'friend', so I just want to make sure.

"On one condition," you say with eyes full of steel. "In a year's time, when I am an adult, I go with you on the next."

Steinarr meets your gaze, a proud fire in his eyes. "As long as you pass the trials, yes."

You smile as you shake on it. Asveig scowls, clearly unhappy with your apparent 'backsliding.'

The past year and some change had been filled to the brim with Blackhand's commentary. To suddenly go from that to only hearing him once or twice a week...

It's like your mind turned from a fertile valley to a desolate waste.

You're lonely and that's undeniable.

"Blackhand, enough is enough. You've been sulking for far too long." When he doesn't answer, a scowl crawls across your face as you muster your willpower. "Fine, have it your way."

Your willpower dives into the shadows of your mind. Wrapping your mind around Blackhand's legs, you drag him kicking and screaming into the light.

'That was unnecessary.' Blackhand grumbles, the lie obvious to both you and him.

"You've been gone for over a month!" You throw your hands into the air, your mien a perfect picture of incredulity.

'...Really?' He 'blinks', astonishment warbling his voice. 'I... time must move slower in the depths of the mind. Or maybe Standstill has something to do with it?'

"If the deeper in my mind you go, the slower time seems to move, don't go that deep again." You sigh, a hand on your face. "What drove you away in the first place?"

'I... I realized that it was possible my entire personality, who I am as a person, was gleaned from a name people gave me and not the result of my own actions. Am I the master of my kenning or is it the master of me?'

"That's stupid," you say, channeling Drifa's bluntness. "It doesn't matter whether or not your kenning influences your identity, because you get kennings for doing things often enough that people know you for it."

Blackhand falls silent for a long moment. He suddenly chuckles and breaks the quiet. 'From the mouths of babes...'

Your roll your eyes.

Well, at least Blackhand's back.

Learning English (Hugr (Wordplay): 2, 4, 5, 5, 3, 5) 7 Successes
"Your command of the English language is commendable, Young Lady," Jerasmus says to you in English as he bows.

"Thank you, Jerasmus. I had a good teacher." You smile as you reply, also in English. Ever since you started learning English, your dreams are a mix of English and Norse — an oddity you weren't expecting at all.

"Now then, Squire Gabriel," Jerasmus nods to your study partner, "what is a declension?"

Gabriel groans, clearly not a scholar at heart. "God give me strength," he mutters as he runs fingers over a length of prayer beads. He and Jerasmus had carved them from wood and bone — though Jerasmus' is made out of a material neither you nor Blackhand recognize and the only answer the Mendicant seems to want to give is in the form of an amused eye sparkle.

As Gabriel struggles through his English lessons, you relax in the glow of fluency.

(You are now Fluent in English!)

Visiting Unknown Farm (Hamingja: 1, 2, 1, 1, 1) 5 Failures... Uh, well then
Stigandr declined the invitation, which has you worried. Fortunately, Abjorn and Aki both accepted and are now following behind as you head towards the only farm you don't know in the valley.

The owner of it, a Dane by the name of — believe it or not — Halfdan, moved in to the valley a few years back, but you never paid a visit until now. You shake your head as you, once again, are reminded of the poor farmer's name. Some people just have the worst luck when it comes to names.

Regardless, it's high time that you learned his face. After all, if the worst should come to pass and your family and his should be at odds, it's best to know the face of your enemy. It's also nice to know who your neighbors are.

Abjorn stops mid-step as he tilts his head up, a severe frown on his face. You and Aki pause in turn as the big boy takes in a huge lungful of air.

"Smoke, something's burning." Abjorn remarks, fingering the sax on his waist. He tastes the air again and a scowl darkens his face. "It's mostly wood, but there's human fear mixed in."

"I heard whispers of a housefire in my dreams," Aki says thoughtfully in turn. "But it was distant and hazy, not something that affects us."

"Well," you say, rocking on your heels. "If it's a housefire, then we should lend aid where we can."

"And if it's this Halfdan's foes burning it down?" Abjorn asks, gaze turned to the south, where Halfdan's farm lies — obscured by massive trees as it is.

[ ] (Unlocked: Bold) "We will lend our neighbors aid, whether by blade or by bucket." (Begins Encounter: Halfdan's Home is Burning, on Halfdan's side. +10 Relations with Halfdan if you succeed)

Seems like a no-brainer!

Possibly in both senses of the word.

That mostly went pretty well, really. We'll need to try and patch things up with Mom, but that aside...Mastering Reinforce Shield is definitely on the long term agenda now, though probably not in the near future for a variety of reasons. Stigandr not coming with us is also unfortunate and means we definitely need to spend an action spending time with him next turn.

As for the vote, I feel like there's only one real choice here:

[ ] (Unlocked: Bold) "We will lend our neighbors aid, whether by blade or by bucket." (Begins Encounter: Halfdan's Home is Burning, on Halfdan's side. +10 Relations with Halfdan if you succeed)

Is it a good choice? Depends how it goes. But we'll never gain Orthstirr by avoiding risk at all costs.

Hoping that now that we've gotten Reinforced Shield (and spoken with our Englishmen), I can try to get people interested in flexible weapon training.

I'm definitely interested. It's probably next on the list of tricks to explore (other than the obligatory Image-Crafting for Aki's project and maybe getting to 3 successes on Leaping-Cleave)...I just think tricks are very much not the area where we are lacking at the moment.

We currently have 8 combat tricks including our Hugareida (plus Leaping Cleave), plus a Seidr spell and 6 non-combat tricks (7 after we pick up the Artcraft one). Assuming the benchmarks are talking combat tricks, that's still shading into full adult level. Our skills, meanwhile are, uh, the phrase that leaps to mind is 'bad' at least in terms of noncombat ones, but even our combat skills are insufficient for going raiding at 16. We need to increase them more than we need another trick. We'll definitely still start working on that one, and soon, but probably slowly.

That's super valid. I'm just bein' pushy, lol. Don't mind me.

Honestly focusing on getting some boons to pass onto future children is definitely something we should focus on.

It absolutely is in the long term. I think that's probably one of our highest priorities once we're back from raiding. Getting to the point where we're qualified to go raiding, however, is gonna be intensive, as is getting our skills to a basic level. We can do it...I highly doubt we can do it if we're investing, conservatively, a good third of the time between now and then (plausibly more like half) getting just that one Mastery.

This puts it at the top of the queue for tricks to Master (well above our Hugareida tricks, which were there previously), but not above the stuff that's still more urgent than mastering tricks.
