Really the only choice I see as bad here is giving the credit to the Templars. Like, they're paranoid bastards who hate magic. Regardless of how everyone else would react, giving them credit would cause them to turn around and investigate, and they're probably positioned well enough to find out the truth regarding Heidi. Plus, they probably wouldn't give a single rat's ass about tearing apart the empire, because they are essentially cultists on a mission from their god.
Boney has addressed before that this isn't 40K:
As long as you abide by the Articles of Imperial Magic, without solid evidence of your wrongdoing they cannot touch you without getting in a world of shit. 'All eight Colleges threatening to declare war on Stirland' levels of shit. 'The Emperor himself asking what the fuck is going on over there' levels of shit. If there is one thing that the Colleges will move heaven and earth to prevent, it's the precedent that members of the College in good standing can be victimized by Witch Hunters. Besides that, Magisters legally have all the rights and protections of nobility, and as a Journeywoman you are under the protection of your Master - besides which, you actually are a noble.

I cannot emphasize it enough: THIS IS NOT 40K. It takes more than someone pointing and shouting 'heresy' to be murdered by the Witch Hunters.

Here is the legal status between the Witch Hunters (aka the Templars of Sigmar) and members of the Colleges of Magic:

14. All Magisters are required to render such aid as is deemed necessary to the Holy Orders of the Templars of Sigmar, should said Templars provide satisfactory proof that the servant of malignancy they face is beyond their capacity to capture or destroy without magical means.

You aren't their prey. You're their backup.

Especially as I've been thinking that we might wind up using our remaining Great Deed on getting the other half of Thorek's favor done, the "Lend your influence to pressuring the expatriate Dwarves of Middenheim into revealing the secrets of their ancestral home." one.

IIRC that one is already done, it only called for Mathilde letting Middenheim know it would be good for their alliance with the Eonir if they started prodding the Dwarves on Thorek's behalf. Using a Great Deed on it is overkill and far beyond what Mathilde promised Thorek.

Oh, so both halves of Thorek's request were done? The Karag Dum we wrote a paper on, but the Middenheim thing I must have overlooked in an update or just plumb forgotten then.

A insane, but hilarious, epiphany that just sort of popped in there:
Okay: We've theorized that this present encounter could be part of the Everchosen tournament. If so, presumably, it would be Alric (either recruited or still being scouted by Tzeentch) vs Alberich (inducted by Slaanesh)

But if that is the case, the ending here, and that modifier, raises a question: Who wins the match when a third party comes in and flips the table?

...Does this mean Mathilde is going to get what is presumably Khorne's backing in the tourney?

(Honestly I'm not sure what's worse/better about that nonsensical scenario. Khonre backing a wizard for Everchosen or Mathilde stumbling her way into being considered.)

[ ] The Templars of Sigmar
The information they provided demonstrated the value of a good relationship with the Holy Order of the Templars of Sigmar, and them getting the credit means that any attempts by others to investigate the matter further will run into an unyielding wall.

It's pretty much stated to be the best option to keep Heidi's secret safe. And the Sigmarites ARE a great source of information and control three Electors. It's far from certain we won't need their help in the future be it for censored or restricted information or simply for their political backing.

And we'll be in a much better position to undermine them in the future if we are their apparent allies. The art of war is the art of deception.

Personally I like giving the Templars a bit of the glory.
They cooperated with us and we paid em back double, that's someone you want to work with again.
I think this is also a explanation acceptable to everyone.
(that they are a proverbial brick wall to other investigations is just a nice bonus)

..it's also funny because someone with a witchhunter hat clearly decapitated the demon.

So overall, a very fun little mini-arc, not as dramatic as most so far, but most have been end of arc finalises.

9/10 will hunt evil with magic dad again.

it will feel weird to end a mini-arc without the big trait-fair at the end, but this has not been an impactful enough event on Mathy on its own to warrant it.

maybe we might finish the scouting skill if boney feels like throwing a bone, but I'm not expecting it.

I dunno. Would he still be holding a grudge over Mathilde cooperating with an Ice Witch to gank one of his champions up north?
Khorne's not the sort to hold grudges over that. That fight was a purely physical confrontation, and Khorne cares not from where blood flows, only that it flows.

Plus, they probably wouldn't give a single rat's ass about causing massive instability in the empire so long as it doesn't utterly collapse, because they are essentially cultists on a mission from their god.
Oh, they would. The reason the Grey (with Amethyst help) eliminated the previous Empress was because the Templars, in Regimand's estimation, couldn't afford to move against her and destabilize, in his words, "Sigmar's empire."

Before Boney confirmed that the Longshanks wouldn't support an out-and-out lie I had the thought of suggesting giving the credit to a passing templar of Ulric, just to cause maximum confusion for whoever chose to dig around. It's even easily believable cause a good chunk of the city could testify that they heard a wolf howl.

Very tempted to vote for the favor to go to Mira, if only because imagine if the first she hears of this is a letter from the Longshanks officially thanking her for her help. "I did what now?"

Also, loved the Mathilde interrupt!

We already went overkill on what we did for Mira, I think she'll be very favorably inclined to us either way. Might as well make some new friends.

[x] Yourself
[x] The Longshanks

It's a nice little feather in the cap for going above and beyond, nabbing the credit for ourselves so I'm okay with that.

I'm fond of the longshanks too, so equally okay there.

Seemingly heedless of his injuries, Alberich draws a bone dagger from his tunic with his remaining hand and throws himself forward, moving with sinuous and unnatural grace around the arrows loosed at him and closing on the lead Longshank, who has only his own knife to raise in defence of himself. The next few seconds might have gone very badly for the Longshanks and any in the crowd with the bravery to assist them, but Alberich's focus on the foe in front of him is all the opportunity you need. With a moment of concentration and a few muttered syllables you appear behind him, and Branulhune passes in a neat and perfect arc through Alberich's neck, sending a spray of blood over the Longshank who was heartbeats away from having his own spilled, and a head rolling across the cobblestones.

"Thank you for your assistance, gentlemen," you say to the Longshanks as you allow Branulhune to disappear once more.
You know, I'd love to know what went through the lead Longshank's head during this moment. He's facing down a cultist who's charging him with unnatural speed and agility, he's only got a knife to defend himself, he knows he's outclassed and probably about to die... and then Mathilde appears out of literal nowhere, decapitates the charging madman close enough that he gets hit with the blood spray, then calmly and collectedly thanks him for his assistance.

Gods, Alberich was running at an almost 50 point bonus. I'm So very glad we didn't try to take him alive.
