These are legitimate concerns. However, I notice that this is also a very convenient line of reasoning: it's not that we are hiding information from our political opponents for political reasons, it's just that if they knew they would use that information for political reasons.
Alric's choice of projects is obviously motivated by personal considerations, true. But any Magister, and especially any Lord Magister, has a lot of discretion in choosing how to serve the Empire. Alric has been exercising his privileges as a Magister of the Colleges in a way that I find distasteful, but that is still legal. Actually sabotaging an investigation into a plot of the Four crosses the line into actual treason, and I don't think we know enough about Alric to say that he is likely to do that kind of thing.
...and if Alric does do something like that, then he isn't just a washed-up has-been but a dangerous traitor. And in that case it's better he shows his true colours now, under the watchful eyes of the Grey Order, than during the invasion of the next Everchosen or something like that.
The Skull River ambush is one candidate. The disease outbreaks in the Black Waters project is another.
"Don't you risk miscast every time? How can that be better than a bit of haggling?"
Jokes aside, I presume Regimand is good enough to be able to cast FC spells without a risk and just weaves SaM into them.[X] Favour to Mira
"Don't you risk miscast every time? How can that be better than a bit of haggling?"
"I know what I said!"
I don't think Alric would go out of his way to outright sabotage figures that prominent over being slighted, but if there's a way for him to get what he wants while also getting his own back, he'll take it."
I mean, why did Hexensohen keep whatever he was up to secret in the first place? Maybe Alric had the same reason, or maybe he thought it'd be better to keep quiet so his opponents don't steal a march on him (as we might well be doing now, I'll note), or maybe he thought he wouldn't get permission to go digging after a Magister Patriarch-killing but otherwise seemingly sleeping dog. That might be what happened, but if so, why did he lie to Roswita about helping with the Sylvania campaign first? That's the big red flag that has me wary of him. He said he'd join the war and then he went digging in a crypt for unrelated secrets.

That had something to do with why Hexensohn was there, sure. But the question of what was he looking for in Drakenhof's crypts and how it killed him was never answered in the story. Algard said he'll ask Elspeth, so we'll probably find out if he ever decides we need to know.Hexensohn thought that Abelhelm was a secret necromancer, and turned up to "catch" him in the act.
To protect a retaken Karak, at the request of a King, with the involvement of a High Priest, while being Kragg. Finding someone willing to experiment without any of those four justifications would be tricky.
Wait - Kragg knows about mixed Runework from Bok so he should be open to collaborating.
Actually Kragg has done some kickflipping things - first with the Umdumgi then with the Doom tower so it... probably couldn't hurt to attempt to get his interest?
We also know that trying to get kragg anywhere near an elf is bad for the health. Mostly the elfs health. We have Thorek on board frankly i dont want Kragg anywhere near the waystones given his view on apprentices. It wont help if he comes upbwith the solution onhow to do the dwarven rune side of the waystones and then goes "but no one is worthy of me teaching them how" One Kragg will not be sufficient, Thorek and all his students some which are presumably journey men and masters in their own right would.

Holy shit this was the reason?Hexensohn thought that Abelhelm was a secret necromancer, and turned up to "catch" him in the act.
"IF" he goes to his graveThat is not a kickflip, those are on purpose, that is a deep shame that Kragg will take to his grave.
What advantage was there in finding Gotrek's dead body in that it was a higher roll than not finding it?
That suspicious elf guy underground that we sold for an elfcation, what was his deal?
How was Anton's aunt relevant? Meaning their relationship and what she did for the empire.
If we had found his body, and it was intact (and not chunky salsa), we could have used the Seed to heal him, as it works on the recently dead too. What advantage was there in finding Gotrek's dead body in that it was a higher roll than not finding it?
The seed can resurrect the recently dead. If we'd have found him quick enough, he'd still be alive. (It only ressurects important characters, mostly because it would be shitty gameplay otherwise). What advantage was there in finding Gotrek's dead body in that it was a higher roll than not finding it?
He investigated all his concilours, and while personally shit at intrigue, he did understand good delegation. And he was a witchhunter, so he'd have plenty of contacts. The templars figured most out, and then sat on it because of Divided Loyalties, until he dropped it on us.
Heidi also implies Ranald got involved and nudged things a bit, but that may just be her faith speaking.
Thanks for the info.
