Is there any reason we couldn't recruit a Ranaldite priest to WEB-MAT? We know he's more okay than most gods with his holy energy/artifacts being studied (as long as you aren't looking at him directly) so he also seems the most likely to have a priest out there willing to join a project studying those.
We can (or we can at least cooperate, direct payroll may not work out because they wouldn't be a magister). And we know he's ok with Mathilde studying the artifact she earned for doing something extremely Ranald. And he does like sneakiness in his worship. You're not supposed to tell people you're a faithful, and his shrines are hidable.

On the other hand, I think getting a priest to shove some divine energy into AV should be fine. That said, it would need to be a decently powerful priest, because at least for winds you need a pretty strong concentration to induce a transformation.
One of the Hedgewise groups worship Ranald, and some of them are probably priests rather than mages, but at the same time the Ranald worshipping Hedgewise are the ones with beef with Ulric and Middenheim, so who knows if we can recruit them or not.
Doesn't matter. WEBMAT =/= Waystones (and Waystones =/= Middenheim). We can recruit/hire them for this project without necessarily having them work on the Waystones.

I imagine if we wanted them to hang around for other potential WM projects we wouldn't hire them officially but there is a local gambling hall that would be more than willing to pay an amount commensurate to their skills. ;)

I don't think showing others the divine artifact of a god of sneakiness is a good idea. Maybe if they're also Ranaldites, but I would prefer to keep it restricted to Mathilde alone, unless there's a really pressing reason to do otherwise.

AV-divine research that doesn't involve the coin directly is fine though.
Or you know, we could just... investigate with coin, and then just sort of... launder the research as and how desired later. Given how Mathilde's AV research has gone before, I doubt the coin phase would be intrinsically shared widely.

We've talked about laundering far, far more dangerous research topics to Mathilde's health before than just the good relationship with a frowned upon but still entirely legitimate god of the Empire, and figuring out how to properly accommodate His wishes into our research.

Of course. My point was that doing the original research on the coin is something Matty should do on her own. The results are mostly fine, and other AV stuff is also fine. Even Ranald stuff is probably fine, so long as it's not the coin.

So- non waystone projects for WEBMAT:

- the dwarves and elves used to combine runework and magic to make wonders. What were they, how does it look like they worked, sand can we reproduce anything using wizards instead of elves?
- light of sigmar/burning shadows combo melted a vampire king. Can it be reproduced? Formalized?
- the dwarves have a speech-to-text rune. This might just be because khalazid is logical and semi magical, or not. Get some book priests and see if a device can be created, or a language modified enough to work with such a device.
- Celestial weather spells and jade growth spells as compliments over large areas.
- New black orcs from Brettonia? Get some samples and a damsal and try to reverse engineer what was done to them and by who. Also, weaknesses.
- Weapons to kill gods. The Horned Rat is the keystone that holds the skaven together and keeps them a threat. There was a time before it was a god. How can what it did be reversed or ended?
- Field trip to record the resurrection of the cults Kasmir is setting up, and their effects on the sacral-magical landscape?
- Wtf is with Bok?
- AV decomposition and potential recreation. The way tongs failed but AV holds together, along with qyesh, implies that the winds feel constricted by each other and struggle to escape as soon as there is an imbalance in the ratios between the levels of ALL of the other winds. Can this be explored further?
One of these things is not like the others, one of these things doesn't belong.

Its not the 'good relationship with Ranald' bit that needs to remain secret, its the coin itself.

That is, its definitely in Mathilde's best interests for no one to know that she can tell divinely powered lies- not even getting into the danger of people knowing about Protector shenanigans.

I don't see any problem with folks knowing about the protector side - it's 100% honest, divinely enforced. The dwarves especially like knowing who to give their thanks to.

[X] Belegar, to discuss who will be Loremaster after you.
[X] Altdorf, to witness the octenniel duels for the position of Supreme Patriarch.
[X] Karak Vlag, to see if they've been talked out from behind their fortifications yet.
[X] Panoramia, to properly finishing catching up with her

The only 'safe' side of the coin to reveal is the Gambler, and I'd still be against letting anyone know about that.

Public Service Announcement:

We at 'I don't want to die inc.' would like to remind everyone that, low key, The Coin is in the same league of Divine Artifice as as
Ghal Maraz, The Sacred Flame of Ulric, Frostfang etc etc.

its not as fancy in a fight, but its still the top artifice* of a full-on, big G, human god.

*as this is Ranald, there might be a bigger artifice that no one knows about.

even pass the stuff like letting people know that Mathy can divinely lie, divinely sneak, divinely gamble and divinely hype herself, and how that would freak everyone out because oh my gods....

that's a thing that people will want to steal. not just Ranaldine extremists or ones who can convince themselves that 'they deserve it more', but just about everyone that would steal/bribe/murder for Ghal Maraz, The Sacred Flame of Ulric, Frostfang etc etc if given the chance.

and they will get a lot more chances with us than with the imperial guards or the priest of 'come at me bro' or the queen ice bitch.

its like the belt and wizards: don't wave it in front of them, many, many, many of them will be tempted, dwarf rage or no dwarf rage.

just that instead of wizards: it's everyone that would like to get their hands on the coin. (including wizards.)

What's Frostfang?

If you mean Fearfrost (the weapon of Katarin Bokha) then I don't think there's (necessarily) any religious importance there? As far as canon sources go, it's not "blessed by the Ancient Widow" or anything. There's certainly very significant cultural importance, as the weapon forged by Miska and wielded by the Khan-Queens, but I don't see religious importance.

Really? I guess I just always assumed...

The only thing it's 6th edition entry says is that Miska forged it, the Khan-Queens wielded it, and that, supposedly, if a man tried to wield it he'd be frozen to death instantly.

The Ancient Widow has a fairly light presence in the lore- as one example, she doesn't even have a mention in the section of Realm of the Ice Queen that talks about the gods of Kislev. The Kislev version of Handrich does*, but not the Ancient Widow.

The only time she directly comes up in the book is sections involving the Hags and the Ice Witches.

*His name is Kalita. Gold is the metal of Dazh and silver is the metal of Tor, so Kalita is more associated with bulk goods and trying to keep the roads clear from weather.

I'm more interested in the Ducklings than wizards dueling giant wizard-dragons.

@Humbaba, nice omake! Those last few letters had lots of feels.

A few more thoughts:
  • I'm sort of hyped by the idea of a Vampire Mathilde who hides away doing research and emerges to wreck shit. The obvious short-term plan is going to Sylvania and wrecking everything that moves with the Second Secret, but after that there are many places we could visit! This might finally be a good opportunity to go back to the Chaos Dwarves and start wrecking shit! More Skaven adventures could be on the table! There are lots of ridiculously dangerous places I'd be interested in visiting if we got a massive power boost while also losing our current duties and connections.
  • Don't forget the following possibility: "she becomes something new with its own odd weaknesses she has to discover and hide". Or even "whatever she becomes is sufficiently distinct from a vampire that she can uses the Coin to lie to the College about how she achieved it and simply continue her life".
This is a human with a dwarven soul.

She will shave her head and go slayer, eventually finding the axe Gotrek supposed to find.

Or take that trip to elfland and kill a few dark elf dragon for the cure.

We're almost certain Mathilde doesn't actually have a dwarven soul, and that it's a fiction made up because some important dwarves can't stomach the idea of an umgi doing a better job of reclaiming holds than they've ever managed.

Your previous work with dumping momentum provides a decent starting point, as you've already practiced moving empty hands into a position to bring a sword down for the next swing and adapted you to the sudden appearance of a large piece of momentumless metal in your hands.
