That is where they keep the warpstone pillar that actually selects the Council of Thirteen. Kill them, break the pillar and the Under Empire descends into chaos and madness
The Pillar was created by the Horned Rat for a specific purpose. Should the purpose outlive the Pillar I am confident that the Horned Rat would find a new tool to serve it, even if it takes a while.
Mathilde is already on the cusp of having an Advanced Diplomacy skill for negotiations with the Colleges.
Those most probably stack. Advanced Diplomacy is learning the proper communication avenues, tools and niceties. Collegiate is about genuine personal attitude and affinity.
She has immense institutional influence as a Lord Magister of one of the Colleges and someone who has done multiple Great Deeds.
She's probably not unique in that way across all eight Colleges. So when she encounters others like her (and barring certain Colleges giving out too many LM titles as frivolous status symbols I'd bet that roughly 40% of LMs are at least as impressive as her) she'll be nothing but a peer trying to talk people into things on an even footing. Collegiate bumps it up to peer +10 or even peer +20.

To put it differently, how many among the other LMs of the Grey College do you think are objectively less impressed with themselves than they are with Mathilde? Or is it more that you think the Grey College as a whole is ahead in their LM quality?
Where she's a lot weaker is getting non-Imperial magical traditions to help, and actually contributing to solving the problem.
Help from all four corners of the known world would be nice, but I don't feel like it is of prime importance. Bretonnians apparently just speak a variant of Reikspiel (or whatever we want to call the language of central not!Europe) and Kislevites might or might not have any information that is actually literally indispensable.
The people we actually definitely need to join the table are the Elves (who are hosting and employing us which makes them a given), the Dwarves (for which Polyglot doesn't really help) and the College Wizards (in order to gain Waystone-related results that actually lead to Human-applicable advances). Everything else is just a great bonus.

As the liber shows smarter people have tried and gone insane.
But how many of those people had a hivemind of questers controlling their choices and averting any slips down the slopes? Being controlled by hundreds of disembodied voices in your head is a surefire way to stave off insanity induced behavior :V.

Seriously though, I do not believe that BoneyM would change his philosophy of high player agency should we decide to make this into a Necromancy Quest. Not that I am advocating for that, no sire.

I can't help but imagine what Mathilde would choose if she were picking a trait off a list like we were. And in my mind, while there's good reasons for her to choose Polyglot, (or options like Mentor and Trucemaker,) her choosing Collegiate when Dawri is on the list just feels wrong to me.

Yes, integrating with other College wizards is a worthy thing to do, but compare that to what Dawri means. It's not so much "dwarven infection" memes or Mathilde declaring herself Literally-A-Dwarf.
See, I see it as the opposite being true. Choosing Dawri feels narratively satisfying as an official symbol for how much she likes Dwarven culture. But if she were to literally be presented with these options she would (after going paranoid over just what kind of Chaos-induced miscast caused a list of permanent personality alterations to float in front of her, asking her to make a choice) choose the most practical and useful option. Not the one that is supposed to validate something that she already feels and experiences to a certain extent and especially not the option that paves over her currently healthy amount of skepticism over the whole Dawi Soul thing. Mathilde is Human and she knows that she is Human. She likes a lot about Dawi culture and feels comfortable there, but she is happy that she doesn't actually suffer from the racial traits, habits and beliefs that she doesn't enjoy.

[X] DIPLO: Dawri
[X] DIPLO: Polyglot

This isn't aimed at anyone, but I'm rather upset at the idea of Collegiate winning over Dawri. I know people are voting for Collegiate on its own merits, but like, I can't help but imagine what Mathilde would choose if she were picking a trait off a list like we were. And in my mind, while there's good reasons for her to choose Polyglot, (or options like Mentor and Trucemaker,) her choosing Collegiate when Dawri is on the list just feels wrong to me.
counter, I find some of the talk around Dwarf-Mathy upsetting in its own way: frankly, mathy found 'your a dwarf' more on the insulting side then the liking side of not really caring.

she likes dwarfs, but she doestn want to be one... the (some of) the thread wants that, but she doesnt.

I like that mathy can get integrated with a culture she lives in. but I don't like the idea of mathy forgetting who she is in the quest of 'being more dwarf.'

boni. It'd be bonii if it was bonius. Also, boni can probably be used to make a GM-related pun.

And though I was on a different side of that battle, I feel a kinship with these people! I too know the pain of thinking what if, of seeing with clarity what probably could've been solved, what pinches could've been avoided, had you only been able to gather more support in the days of yore! It's a pain I wouldn't wish on anybody, not even the direst of political enemies. And if I can help alleviate that, help my lost siblings regain what they've wanted for so long, then by Abel I shall vote for it!

Sometimes the best battle is one you never fight. Every life not spent fighting lesser evils can be turned against the greater ones.

[ ] LESSON: Light Fingers
It's not theft, it's espionage. The enemies of the Empire and the Karaz Ankor have all sorts of interesting and portable items that would do a lot of good in friendly hands, from supplies to devices to paperwork.

[ ] LESSON: Mystic
Some mysteries should be embraced, rather than unravelled. You might not fully understand the Gods this way, but you are much more likely to get along with Them.

Not sure which between these two... gonna give it so more thought before voting on the second part.

Wow, Dhar Insight is winning! That's kind of nuts. I figured that'd be the high risk/high reward option, that's hella dangerous to dive into. I'm surprised the thread is favoring it.

For all we know the Horned Rat just made the first pillar ex nihilo. Might just do it again.

Bonuses. Same way as geniuses, because English doesn't work the same way as Latin or Greek.

Think about it this way: it's the only trait that deals with magic directly, and any additional risk garnered pales in comparison to the Liber Mortis, which exists as a physical discoverable object.

Really good arguments all around tbh. Ended up removing Trucemaker and Collegiate. Added Dawri. Removed Dhar Insight.

I'd love to see a mentorship eventually <3

[X] DIPLO: Polyglot
This might be handy since we're interacting with so many groups.

[X] LESSON: Dhar Insight
Just seems cool?

[X] LESSON: Light Fingers
Surprisingly lots of stealing happens in this quest so why not buff it?

Expectation: language lessons cost less AP, diplo skill increases, number grows larger :thonk: (sorry to be reductive)

[X] DIPLO: Dawri
absolutely seems like the IC choice

[X] LESSON: Leader

Look, once is the climax to an arc. Twice is a callback. Three times? That's a pattern, and I want us to be prepared for the next round of "your direct superior has been found AFK. Enemies swarm at the gate. You are now in command, win or perish". (<3 you Boney)

Entire Latin Plural Declension of 'bonus': :V

Case / GenderMasculineFeminineNeuter
Nominativebonibonaebona
Genitivebonorumbonarumbonorum
Dativebonisbonisbonis
Accusativebonosbonasbona
Ablativebonisbonisbonis
Vocativebonibonaebona

Or we could just stick to the common English plural conjugation of +es.
Bonuses.
