Well. I missed a lot. I guess I just have to jump back in.

Very interesting. Kislev doesn't seem too compelling to me--they have a lot of expectations for the project that would be hard to meet, even besides the issues of working so close to the chaos wastes.
Bretonnia I'm interested in, but it's a serious question whether Damsel help or greater Elf help is more valuable.
If nothing else, we impressed the seriousness of our operation on them. Kislev at least seems like they will probably be willing to help even if we don't center things there.

Honestly, Kislevite prince not listing personal political agenda he wants achieved makes me a bit sus.
The political agenda he wants achieved is 'less eldritch madmen at the doorstep'.

What is this? Feigned minute long akward ignoring us to demonstrate their superior status? Seems very weird. Or should we've done something like kneel before them?
Procedure. You don't speak until the steward introduces you. Otherwise it'd be improper.

K8P is, as always, tempting. But while we get easier access to its resources, we have that access anyways.
Laurelorn remains the obvious choice, and access to the Eonir's library is... tempting. As mentioned, they have pre-elven records, and... I mean. Yeah. Sure, the elves are sketch, but that's kinda how elves are, and we want to give them as many reasons to like us as possible. Laurelorn also has the disadvantage of being physically located in the Empire, which gives a lesser version of all the problems of Imperial sponsorship.

In light of our discussion with Kislev and Carcassone, they're both solid options - but just solid. Don't have the advantage of Elven Library or 'Being Karak Eight Peaks'. I'm somewhat tempted by Carcassone. Damsels are nigh-unique... for humans. Which is neat, but I don't think they have any particular expertise in waystones. Ice Witches are custodians of the waystones, but it's unclear if they know more than usual about them.

The Grey College is not really worth mentioning.

On the other hand, getting both runesmiths and archmages together and getting them to share is critical. And I think the hard part will be the runesmiths, but if it turns out the elves were expecting much more of them, that could be a problem too. But... with the oaths the Runesmiths take, I'm afraid that... we don't just need a bit unusual of a Runesmith, we need an outright heretic. Our lack of understanding is fundamental, we need someone willing to share fundamentals. If they're the only one allowed to hold a significant part of the puzzle, it's not going to work. In that sense 'willing to work with elves in elfland' is almost an endorsement. Ugh.

In the end, I suppose there's really only one option.

In further news, I speculate that we won't be completely burning our bridges with whoever we don't pick, and that a significant portion of our involvement in their project will be attracting additional contributors. Frankly, I'm somewhat skeptical Mathilde can personally contribute that much in the way of research.

how do you feel about ornate wine-glasses drunk upon balconies?
Only if we can talk openly during it.
If they insist in keeping up their weird little charade in private too it has no appeal to me.

For example the sexy forest might not drink brandy either, but we can still share an open word about the future in a relaxed atmosphere with her, which is the essence of the idea.

Although, I admit I'm hyped whatever option gets chosen, I hope some elves end up living in K8P regardless, gotta collect them all (dwarves, halflings, humans, the WE, a dragon, a skaven, we need those elves for the collection dammit).

Yeah, the problem is that it all seems very weird. Like, he could do some covert research beforehand, like telling guards to ask for our title when admitting us and have information coming to him before we are allowed in his presence. Maybe there is another problem - the guards are not allowed to ask such things from foreign visitors of high status because ???
It's possible that it's seen as more polite to be seen having gone out of your way to be polite. If someone just knows your name you can't tell if they greeted you correctly out of fastidious politeness or on accident, if they obviously don't but manage it anyway then clearly it's the former.

Mathilde would probably prefer an honest conversation done entire through weird verbal circumlocutions, actually. She's probably enjoy deciphering it all, figuring out the double meanings (if they aren't all insulting like in Elgi), and even adding in a few puns and jokes. She is a Zhuf-soul, after all.

I'd say the Ice Witches have some knowledge of waystones. The blizzard affinity of Kislev's waystones seems to be a stable aftermarket modification, so if nothing else they have must learned during whatever process made that so.

Alright, guess it's a bit late but now i have time to make an effort post and so i shall.

First thing, voting just based on your preference is valid, if for some reason "[ ] Goat fief" was number one and they only promised to supply Mathilde with as much goat milk as she can drink that would be a valid vote, but i vote based on character and in-world choices and so that's what I will discuss.

The project is a big one, world changing in scope and seeking to emulate the works of the greatest mages and artisans this world has seen in complexity, success is not a given.

The original Waystones were complete with what i choose to simplify as

-Dwarf (10)
-Elf (10)
-Resources (yes)

To the best of my understanding, Mathilde, just because of her reputation, general interest in the world, her contacts and just being Mathilde has the following to start the project:

-Dwarf(4): Living legend +2 , Belebros+1, Dwarfs want this done +1
-Elf(2): really want this done +2.
-Divine(2): Ranald likes her +1, Avatar +1.
-General magic(3): Mathilde +2, Colleges want this done +1.
Resources(3-7): Belebros +2, Elves want this done +1, Great Deed/Boon +0-4.

If chosen, given polities will add:

Laurelorn:
-Elf(+3), Grey Lords+1, Ancient Library+2
-General Magic(+3): Grey Lords +1, ancient library +2.
-Resources +1.

Karak Eight Peaks:
-Dwarf (+2): (Runelords are right here)
-Resources (+3): You have my eternal gratitude.

Carcassonne:
General magic (+1): We could get someone to help.
Divine (+1): The Lady might make time for you.
Resources (+1): I suppose you can have something if you help us with other things.

Kislev:
General Magic (+2) : Everyone will help, or else.
Divine (+2): Everyone.
Elf (+1) did i stutter?
Resources (+5): Really, EVERYONE.

I chose to divide magic between Elf and general magic, because we might get access to magic that while interesting, could not really be relevant to the Waystones.

Carcassonne really falls behind, it's only real benefit is that it's not Elves, Dwarfs or next to the chaos wastes.

Kislev Brings a lot, but much of it might have no impact on the Waystones.

Laurelorn/K8P both brings us closer to the standard used to create the Waystones, but since I'm hoping we can convince either Kragg or Thorek then going Laurelorn is the best way forward.

One thing that might also be relevant to some is Panoramia. I don't see her coming to Kislev in winter, and she won't join during harvest time cos of her Project at K8P.

Otoh... Laurelorn would be very interesting to Panoramia, even in winter.

This is perhaps the hardest decision I've seen in the quest so far. I don't usually go do approval voting, but this time, I think I have to, because I just can't make up my mind.

Panoramia's not likely to be leaving K8P for long periods no matter where we're going. We'll be seeing her by gyrocopter.

I'm pointed this out a bunch of times and never gotten a response, but I think Kislev and Carcassonne are quite different in regards to "buy in" from other magical groups.

At Carcassone we got an explicit promise on behalf of the Fey Enchantress that she will help and provide at least one of her Ladies as major support.

At Kislev we got the Crown Prince claiming that he is going to bully the witches into cooperation whatever their feelings on the matter.

Those do not strike me as the same thing!
Fair point, however I consider it reasonably certain that the Tsarevich can get real motivation for the ice witches to work with us.

Also, you make a good point about the level of commitment from the Enchantress. I had missed that her sending one of her Ladies was something special. (More than just a Damsel?)
