Mathilde becomes the Scathach of the Warhammer world. A master of mysticism and combat that confused the world so much as to what she is supposed to be that it kicks her out and creates a land of shadows between the real and warp for her to rule over. Also in myth a place that prevented the dead from returning to the world not a bad ending to the quest if it ever goes that way.

Normally I would be slightly disappointed we rolled more money. But considering how we swiped it from under the noses of the chaos dwarfs who want it more than anything? It makes the gold much shinier.

On Scaven: It is a rather interesting... habit of them to scrawl their clan allegiance on everything they own. Must be an extension of leaving scent markings.

[ ] Scout the lands of the Iron Wolves

On further thought this is probably a much safer bet than trying to make contact with the Iron Wolves. I'm not convinced a tribe ruled over by a dragon ogre would be amenable to any deal, even if we were lucky enough to find another shaman who speaks khalazid. Scouting them, on the other hand, would let us spot an incoming attack and be ready for it.

We'd have to extend it from merely being a border with no width to at least train height to make that work.
Which likely would need extensive infrastructure along the way.
Which is as prone to sabotage as railways and has less people able to create it.

TLDR: not an option.
I mean, the Grey College presumably has height. The real problem is that you need both stable portals to the realm and back, and that if the train breaks down halfway they're in rather a lot of trouble.

EDIT: Eshin'd again! Perhaps I'll wait a bit next time.

Skaven tunnels are labyrinthine mazes and in places with multiple clans around it is quite likely that the outlying areas change owners with a dizzying regularity as the various major and minor clans launch their plots. So basically they need markings to make it clear what is or isn't theirs.

Scent marking would presumably be unreliable as Clans do not naturally have clan-wide smell based identifiers and while they could make something up it'd be even more complicated than just using visual markings.

It's a bit more intense than that. Boney (unintentionally?) gave it away here.
The natural state of the 'shadow realm' is thin enough to crush air. It needs to be manually altered for something to occupy in and remain intact, as Teclis did for the Grey College.
It seems that while it naturally exists as a dimension, you need to... brace? Yes, brace it before you can make it more than a 2D plane. If we were to make a railroad then we'd have to do the magical equivalent of digging a tunnel all the way to the location.

Dwarfs fortify, Dragons sleep, Greys smug.

You nod, impressed at such an efficient solution at such short notice. "Very efficient. Nothing's wasted."
Interesting that Mathilde understood the technobabble, at least enough to make a non-vague comment.

You consider the offer that Gotri said he's willing to extend. "Do you regret it?"

He shakes his head firmly. "I regret that they made it necessary. Never my response."
Sounds like he would accept. Good to know.

revealing a safe dial. 13-13-13 gets you in, because the way to change the code had been lost with Qrech's predecessor when was entombed alive in this very safe.
I would put money on that being the factory default.

Oh. This. This is a delight. As soon as i finished this paragraph, I reread it. Just because of the disconnect between "we know how Mathilde got this food, and it is perfectly sensible" and the perspective of other characters: "Wait. What? How?... What!?

Normally, the audience knowing something characters don't know is a cause of tension, but here it is inverted into a delightful... smug.

Is that it? Is the opposite of tension not a neutral relaxation, but an active smug?
Even better, consider the image she made. Mathilde was literally just sitting on a stack of barrels full of food in the middle of the road in Chaos Dwarf lands all casual-like, reading a bunch of books that she sure as hell didn't leave with, and at least a few of the wizards probably noticed our new artifacts. Someone artistic, we need a visual representation of this.

I'm also partial to scouting.

... however, I kind of wonder if we shouldn't make the chaos barbs aware that both of their neighbours to the south might have expended themselves militarily and might be presently vulnerable. After all, we wouldn't want the CD to profit TOO MUCH from Clan Moulder's weakness.

[X] Ranging far ahead of the convoy
- With the Knights of Taal's Fury
[X] Scouting near the convoy
- With the Winter Wolves
[X] Use Rite of Way to ease the ascent
- Will only be necessary during the roughest patches
[X] Scout the lands of the Iron Wolves
[X] Attempt to make contact with the Iron Wolves
[X] Investigate the 'Windfall' with the Light Wizards

Voting for all the non-social options - I want to be sure some make it in. The Windfall one seem particularly interesting, what sort of wonders will Mathilde's Windsight reveal?

and a solid reputation amongst the Grey College in general.
In what way did this manifest itself (on or off screen) before we wrote a paper on the Matrix? And how did she gain that reputation as an apprentice?
De Facto: Minor Holds swear fealty to Major Holds which swear fealty to the Karaz Ankor, similarly to Baron/Count to Elector Count to Emperor. Rulers of Minor Holds are called a King but they're recognized at not being a King King. The terminology is not considered confusing because Dwarves would instantly recognize 'King of Karak Hirn', for example, as being completely different in nature to 'King of Karak Gantuk'. Perhaps the best term for them would be 'Petty Kings', though it wouldn't be a great idea to use that term where they can hear you.

De Jure: They're outposts of the Major Holds, and their 'rulers' should be considered Lords, not Kings.
Are you sure you didn't mix up de jure and de facto?
It is true on the tabletop tho. And he was making tabletop stats.
I don't know about Mathilde's Mastery, but the spell itself does make bullets magical. She uses it to kill a Wraith in the Haunted Hills clean-up campaign.
That takes into account that they would have the AV on them at all times. I don't think it would be in the dwarves to share so each of the holds that has a rune master with an anvil would want a stockpile. The dwarves are rather spread out too with them being in the vaults, black mountains, ect. I am not sure how many anvils there are but also wouldn't there be quite a lot of other runes that need to be powered up other that runes on anvils as well?
Dwarf Holds can't directly stockpile AV because Thorek is keeping it all and personally doing the Runic Restoration ritual without necessarily even informing anyone how he's doing it beyond "Please insert your Anvil Rune into my machine here".
won't we have to assign ~2/3rd or so to a specific purpose?
Paying off Dwarven debts accrued during an expedition into the Chaos Wastes is a specific purpose.

[ ] Investigate the 'Windfall' with the Light Wizards

I'm definitely curious. That is essentially katabatic behavior of the winds, which normally don't cleave to conventional air motion.

Time to be doing I think.

[] Use Rite of Way to ease the ascent
We spent a lot of time on that spell. No sense wasting the effort.

[] Investigate the 'Windfall' with the Light Wizards
For Science!

[] Scout the lands of the Iron Wolves
Actionable info. And without being slowed by merely mortal mounts.

excuse you, Hammer-Me-Own-Thumb Dibbelheim is far more than a mere vendor! He is a key factor in the Altdorf experience, a tourist attraction in his own right!
Also a grey college informant.
He's a perpetual. You just can't get the sort of quality he provides naturally. But nobody (including the colleges) can agree which college he belongs to.

Some say Ulgu, and it's all in the mind, or Azyr, and it's a training exercise to find people to actually eat it. Some say Ghur or Ghyran, and the magic is in the making. Others say Chamon, because the magic is in the making, just a little later. The most popular is Shyish, on the theory that his food is the product of an attempt to communicate a taste based windsight. Opinion is split on whether the attempt was successful, but groups of students have been taken there for lessons. Another theory is that it was an attempt by the Light College to create a truly pure eating experience that did not sufficiently consider what that means. And finally, every Grey silently keeps an eye on the Brights, because not having a suspicious reason is very suspicious.

Eh, money in those amounts is fine, its just that the higher rolls would have been more interesting.
I think we should go for assisting with our spell (thats what its there for) and go watch the winds. Its with the light mages and maybe we get some insights through direct contact that can be useful. Remember that we need to pull them down to use magic in the wastes. Id rather our first contact to that is in a controlled environment.
For the third action I think we should scout the iron wolves lands. Its a thing only we can do and with their reputation Id really rather know what exactly is ahead of us. As we didnt see them yet its a distinct possibility the ogres went that way. Talking to them seems less likely to be useful, as as direct raiders there are less incentives for them not to attack us and it would sit badly with me and most likely the dwarves if we pay them off.
The fourth can go to social where I dont have a strong preference, but Id like to talk to the light apprentices before we reach the wastes themselves and I dont think the winds research one counts.

[] Deathfang

He is a dragon. There is a Dragon Ogre nearby. Interesting sort of conversation.

We already learned a fascinating insight into the origins of the differences between those of Ulthuan and those touched by the Winds.

[ ] Preceptor Joerg von Zavstra
[ ] Sir Ruprecht Wulfhart the Younger

finish the rounds.

[ ] Use Rite of Way to ease the ascent

what its made for.

[ ] Asarnil the Dragonlord
[ ] Citharus, Barbitus, and Timpania
[ ] Journeyman Cyrston von Danling

what i would like to do.

[ ] Use Rite of Way to ease the ascent
[ ] Investigate the 'Windfall' with the Light Wizards
[ ] Ice Crone Ljiljana
[ ] Scout the lands of the Iron Wolves

I don't think it's super important to talk with any one else on the expedition other than the Ice witch. We built rite of way and so we should make use of it. Scouting the lands of the Iron Wolves seems like it could be fun and the windfall option is a no brainer always investigate magical oddities if we get the chance.

It has been brought up in that past that the grey college shadow realm is parallel with the normal world, such that entering from K8P doesn't get you closer to the colleges.
We have also talked about how railroads would be great but would be a target for sabotage.
Has anyone raised putting the railroad in the shadow realm itself, or would the nature of the place not lend itself to that?
Not viable at the moment. Algard has been working on it for a long time and he only got paperwork dimensions in his office to show for it*. On the other idea it is a very attractive idea. Infact so much so it is already done in 40k. We call it Webway.

IF we want to start working on it might be viable in a few centruies to millenia.

*Which failed when exposed to hysh soo.

The College generally assumed she was up for the task in Stirland instead of keeping an eye on her to be sure she didn't embarrass them, gave her the benefit of the doubt in the first Bursar incidents, and she had an easier time being cleared for learning new spells than she otherwise would have.

Are you sure you didn't mix up de jure and de facto?

No, legally they're outposts of the Major Holds, but in reality they're in a grey area where they have links to Major Holds but are largely independent and are recognized by most as being ruled by a King or Queen. In the Karaz Ankor that the Ancestors envisioned, there were no Minor Holds, just Major Holds and their outposts.
