Keep in mind that if we go dragon vs dragon, the transformed person is going to lose pretty much every time, as the actual dragon will be much more experienced in the matter.

That's the most morally horrifying thing someone has said in this thread in the last while.

Have a Funny react.
...semi-serious, but, like, could we just set up a killzone and then use the Altar on a cow or something?

I feel like there's a (mostly?) non-horrific way to make this work, though I'd understand if the resultant dragon bone wasn't as good as the real thing.

Legal wizards have only been around 150 years or so, and they were illegal again for some of that time. The Empire is probably only just starting to get to the point where they can even potentially pull it off, just because of the necessary institutional knowledge and resources needed. I think it's one of the hardest spells out there. And that's not even talking about the necessary trust, which would take a generation or two (and there's probably still a few people around who remeber the time the wizards went totally bonkers and starting fighting each other in Altdorf).

This kind of project also needs a hefty push to get going. Just the item itself will cost 16 favors at minmum, and in total it will probably be significantly more. Anything short of an Elector Count or Lord Magister just won't have the connections/pull to get this kind of thing going. A wizard that totally dedicates themself to it might get it rolling, but they'd need to be at the Lord Magister level in power and skill anyway. This is the sort of spell that wins you the Magister Patriarch position.

Incidentally, we might end up talking to him for this. Though that might blow up Belegar's budget.

And then she wanted to use it for gardening.
And then she did.
Fair enough, though I feel obligated to point out that trusting the Wizards who use the spell is a large part of making sure you can control said army.

I have some concerns about the dragon transformation:
Does transformation automatically come with full knowledge of the body? Or would our dragon volunteer need flight lessons first?

Enough to fight at full effectiveness.

For that matter, is dragonflight in whf purely in-setting-physics or is it magically assisted?

Research suggests neither. It's distressed quite a few researchers.

Would a nonwizard transformed into a windsensitive creature like a dragon run the risk of creating magical problems the way untrained human mages do?

Unknown.

Given that the vote specifies that the item should be big and heavy enough that it can't be carried off by the dragon it creates, I'm expecting it to be "mobile" only insofar as we have access to a dwarven engineering corps and can build railroads to move it around.
Keep in mind that if we go dragon vs dragon, the transformed person is going to lose pretty much every time, as the actual dragon will be much more experienced in the matter.
Boney's Principle applies here too: If we go dragon vs. infantry, the infantry is going to lose every time, as the dragon is a fucking dragon. Only losing pretty much every time is a huge step up.

Okay then I know what I will be advocating for when we get around to making the Anti-Air tower.

For those of you wondering why I want to make a Shadow Knife based anti-air tower it's the simple fact that we will eventually make the Ulgu battery tower which means that if we can make our anti-air tower Ulgu then we can hook it up to the battery tower thus allowing it to use a lot more power than other such towers. The reason I am going for Shadow Knives is because it ignores non-magical armor and as a relatively simple spell it's something that we can use the tower to enhance to bullet hell levels without too much issue.

[X] Plan: Fight Dragon with Dragon

Ok then.

We need to make it work on dwarves though. A mythological reference to fafnir would be sweet.

And none of y'all quoting me on this point sees the problem with that? Anything else we could build can be used by dwarves, but this can't.
I'm actually seeing this as a win. K8P is a wildly progressive hold, and integrating the Undumgi into its iconic, legendary defensive systems would go a long way toward permanently entrenching that culture.

This is one of the canon, rulebook spells right? One that the High and Wood Elves would have access to?
Given the life-span of dragons (unlimited) and how long Elves have been throwing magic about (several thousand years) I would expect there to be a meaningful number of elf-turned-dragons wondering around if being trapped in the form of a dragon was survivable long term. Perhaps there are and they just never bothered telling anyone?

…you know, I think I want to see Mathilde attempt this out of pure curiosity. The reactions alone should be epic.

[X] Plan: Fight Dragon with Dragon

AND THEN WE CAN WORK ON TURNING OURSELVES INTO AN ULGU DRAGON TO COURT THE STAR DRAGON@

GENIUS!

IMMORTALITY IS OURS!

I'm not sure if someone's already pointed this out (the thread moves VERY fast), but a dragon transformation tower would also solve several of the significant logistical impediments to romancing a dragon.

I think the idea was cloaca-blocked by pickle somewhere earlier, on grounds of "Mathilde has so much Ulgu in her trying to Transform would be Very Stupid Idea".
