So om none anger inducing topics ever wonder what happens if you gild a giant?
Hmm...

First thought: That would be expensive.

Can giants do colour magic? Even if they can, I don't see giants being Gold magister prospects. But let's say it's possible: Giant gilded gold wizard lord - how many points on TT?
So to share my thoughts with both you and Undead frog Giants are the degraded descendants of the Sky Titans who lived in the giant mountains deep within the Mountains of Mourne, who lost their kindgom due to the great Ogre migration after the arrival of the Great Maw. As they are not related to humans how they approached magic when they were the Sky Titans, if they did at all, would have operated by a different paradigm like how the elves differ from humans, the Slann differ from elves and humans, dwarves do their own thing, and Ogres have Gut Magic.

Giants being the current degraded examples we have, don't seem to use magic in any respect.

It might be the Sky Titans had magic but its uncertain, and best found in 8th edition Ogre Kingdoms if its anywhere going by wiki references.

[X] No. Mathilde's dragon skull chair belongs only to Mathilde.

To get closure on a dangling setting thread from three in-quest years ago. We have literally no idea what has been happening there after we invested all that money. One of the most common questions people ask when new to the quest is "but what about our fief, are we ever going to check on it?"

So we're checking on it.
You are, of course, welcome to vote for whatever you'd like for whatever motivations you have, and that's perfectly legitimate. I'm prefacing this with that statement so that I don't give you the impression that I'm trying to denigrate your choice or your reason for it. The way you phrased that just helped me put into words why I'm voting the way I am. (also, it ended up being less of a direct response to you and more a response to the discussion at large)

That said, personally, I'm not much of a fan of the "closure" argument for voting for things. It feels to me like that would imply that we're just finishing it off, like we just need one more scene and then we'll be done with that story thread. To me, that doesn't really fit with the world BoneyM is writing; there are story arcs of a sort, but they're dynamic, in a living world that moves forward whether we're there or not. Closure doesn't really fit for me as an idea here in most cases. Mathilde's fief isn't going to stop being a thing. It's just going to keep being a bunch of goat farmers in the middle of nowhere. And I'm curious about that! I think it could be fun to see a vignette about what's been going on with the Ranald-worshiping goat farmers that have been completely separated from the events Mathilde's been going through. I like the fief option because I'm interested in the scene BoneyM will write, and I might want to see more later.

Similarly, I'm interested in the Roswita event. She's been raised her entire life to believe certain things, and she's ruling in her father's shadow even now. I wrote her off when she was first introduced, but with her development since then, she's way more interesting. She's in the process of challenging long-held beliefs and working through her family's legacy to figure out what kind of leader and what kind of person she wants to be. That's interesting stuff! And this event is one where a lot of that kind of collides: she's going to be forced to interact with the most magic-y of magic users while purging Stirland of vampires, all while in the middle of her personal development. I want to see how that goes, and I want to see Mathilde there, as she's the one who effected that development in Roswita in the first place. I like the story with her in general, I'm interested in this event specifically, and I'm curious to see how it continues.

I can't, unfortunately, have both of these, though. I ended up going with Roswita this time, because I feel like the fief will be fun whenever it happens, and part of the potential in it is that Mathilde would rarely be at the fief, while Roswita is potentially more consistently engaging.

But the Cheesemaker doesn't even have any goats, how is he supposed to pay the customary goat based dowery?

Is it even possible to get married if the girl's father doesn't own any goats?
Hmph! What a ridiculous notion, that a Cheesemaker wouldn't have any goats. How else would they make goat cheese, sneaking over to milk their neighbor's goats every morning?

Hmm...

I'm not sure about magic but they where meant to be great artisans. They built literaly giant sized castles above the cloudline on the peaks of the Mountains of Mourne and they also forged, again literaly, giant sized cannons that are still in use today by the Ogre Kingdoms. They certainly built to last huh!:D

Why are we talking about romance options all of a sudden
Because some of us like this sort of thing and see the social turn as a way to drum up interest and discover more about these characters.

Personally at this point, I'm shipping Mathilde with her massive collection of smut... I mean "Romance" research material. You know that one aunt that never married but Fabio is peeking out of her bag every time you see her, and has far too much to say about everyone else's love life.

I'm just waiting on the vote for her to learn new languages so she can add to her collection... you know for Research... Yes Research... Bodice ripping, no shirt with streaming hair on a horse, swashbuckling pirate research... Oh sorry what were we talking about again?

Welp time to start making cuts*! Farewell Edda, I care more about trying to slide the fief in there than I do about socializing with colleagues and my aversion to Roswita! 💔

*Grimy basement knife fight time!

Future Forces of the We 2
Following on something @random_npc posted earlier:
Additional 'We' Units

Drengi 'Cavalry': Most Dwarf units, covered in as much armor as they are, would be impossible for spiders to carry into battle, thus necessitating the use of the only truly lightly armored Dwarf units: Slayers. Despite the name, this unit is not actually a Slayer riding atop a Spider into combat, for to do such would prevent a Slayer from achieving a death worthy of erasing their shame. Rather, a Hunter instead carries a Slayer around a flank before both charge forward towards a glorious doom.

Lurker Pack: Taking advantage of the benefits of being an ambush predator allows for a unit that can strike terror in any enemy force. The pack is assigned an area in which they ambush any stragglers of an enemy's force, before retreating with any evidence. However, due to needing to be faster and quieter, the Hunters that make up such a unit are notably lacking in armor, rendering them much less useful in direct combat.

Cannon-layers: Bearing numerous artillery pieces, along with the crews to use them, this egg-layer serves as a mobile artillery platform that can reliably fire over friendly lines. Comes in several varieties depending on the type of artillery piece being fielded, whether it be as simple as a Bolt Thrower, or as complex as an Organ Gun.

Thunder-layer: Carrying numerous marksdwarf and marksmen on an elevated position allows for volleys of fire that can skip over the front ranks entirely. Useful when facing enemies such as Skaven who are prone to throwing fodder before sending in any units of true value.

Flame-layer: With a carapace bearing runed armor to withstand intense temperatures, this Egg-layer bears a massively upsized Drake-gun, allowing it to burn everything in range to ash.

Spider Chariot: A hypothetical unit proposed by Mathilde Weber several times, despite being rejected each time. Essentially, a group of Hunters pulls a chariot sized to fit a Halfling. While Mathilde was noted to be very enthusiastic about the idea, the practicality of such a unit is questionable at best. Despite complaints that "they would be as practical as Flame-layers." the idea was ultimately scrapped.

Spider Dwarf Chariot: Idea vetoed immediately lest it be deemed grudge-worthy for being too similar to Grobi tactics.

[X] King Belegar, to try to get some idea of where he's at with his crisis of faith.
He's our friend and we really should try to get a handle on the shape of his crisis of faith.

[X] Empress 'Heidi', to be present for the birth of her child
A rare event; that we're even able/allowed to attend is its own reason for doing so.

[X] Princess Edda, on a hunt for weavers across the Empire.
Getting to know a fellow councilor, book club member, and maybe getting some idea of what's going on with economic politics in VAU. Possibly scandalize her with Druchii erotica.

[X] Algard, reporting the Skaven Civil War in person instead of in writing.
An opportunity to impress the Mhornokrulak, whom we currently have ready access to. Also I rather like the idea of being a bird of good omen to him.

[X] Check in on your fief in Stirland.
We have responsibilities to that dirtpatch, humble as it is. A window into how the salt of the earth perceives our girl. Delicious worldbuilding. Also we've seen a lot of Rosie lately.

And general approval voting for people of our species in VAU and its environs. I'd rather not be the distant and ineffable crazy wizard lady. And I have faith enough in Boney's ability to write compelling characters. Besides which, VAU is a crossroads of the world! We should spend some time appreciating that.

[x] Francesco Caravello, proud leader of the Undumgi
[X] Oswald Oswaldson, newly-minted Chief Bombardier of the Undumgi
[X] Sir Ruprecht Wulfhart, as the new home of the Winter Wolves takes shape.
[x] Soizic, sparring partner and possible 'sparring partner' of your duckling Hubert.

God, please no, let's *not* even attempt to dive into horrendously inequal superior/subordinate relationships please? I mean, this applies to a lot of the suggestions in the thread lately, yours was just the most recent when i checked on the thread so sorry for picking you out of the crowd :V

But no, like...i'll be frank and say that if they threadway back when had voted to actively pursue abelheim, and gotten anything going while mathilde was still working directly for him, that would have most likely killed my interest in the quest. Please, just...stick to people that aren't either our bosses or our subordinates (or at least are ones we could theoretically remove from that position before actively pursuing a relationship; for example, while i personally wouldn't ship mathilde with johann, he is in a situation where we could switch our professional relationship from 'he works directly for us' to 'he works in K8P as a wizard so we have some veto power over some stuff, but not anywhere near as much power imbalance in a hypothetical relationship, especially if mathilde makes sure to establish professional boundaries while doing so')
Thank goodness Belegar is a safe romantic option then, since we could just stop being his Loremaster whenever we want, just like the Johann situation.

And the Ducklings are safe because they can decide to Journey elsewhere and we don't employ them anyway. And everyone else except Algard is safe because we're not directly in their chain of command.

Problem solved! Except for Algard. Sorry Algard. But don't feel too bad, you're probably like 300 years old, spend most of your time out of phase with reality as we understand it, and aren't interested anyway.

Hmmm. Been briefly skimming some parts of the Skaven armybook, like the timeline. But came across a mention of the fact that the Skaven will generally try to steal or destroy any Skaven artifacts or books about Skaven, kept in Imperial libraries or studied in the Engineering School in Altdorf. Usually done by Clan Eshin of course. It was just a few lines of mention of course.

But it did make me wonder: should we start worrying about Johann, given his loot and study? For that matter, there's our Skaven loot too.

We should probably take some counter-measures about that.

Mathilde is hard to find, sneaky, keeps irregular hours, and is a suspicious Grey Order member. Johann... is... actually, that might be why he has such a high Intrigue score, now that I think about it? Because if he didn't, he'd be in way too much danger of assassination or theft or sabotage. He wouldn't try this shit, unless he thought he could hide it. Still. I think we should do more about that. More counter-measures.

People brought up worry about Eshin going after our prisoner. But I think a far more present concern, is Eshin going after our Skaven loot, or after Johann.

... I think I really want to build that item Vault now. Some place secret and hard to reach, to keep our Skaven loot. And also, a high-security area to do the Research on Skaven stuff, too. So, something like a High-Security Lab/Engineering Place.

At minimum, I think I wanna to talk to Johann about what counter-measures we have going to keep our looting of Skaven stuff secret, and keeping our stuff secure.

*looks at wolf-rat pups* Okay so maybe we are not that subtle. Darn.

Ah, right, I remembered 2 other things I'd thought of and wanted to mention.

So. That thing with the Nordlanders and Middenlanders who joined the expedition, because of the ongoing spat between their two provinces. A conflict that sparked up because villages began vanishing on the border. Now, I was reading the Skaven armybook timeline on the lookout for anything interesting, and I instead got inspired by something else in it: one of the blurbs was "Towns and forts on both sides of the Grey Mountains begin to disappear due to Skaven attacks. The Empire and Bretonnia suspect each other. Although tensions are raised between the nations, only border skirmishes have thus far taken place." So I went 'Huh' and thought to myself, what if something like that happened in between Nordland and Middenland, as a result of the newest Skaven Civil War? Or from Skaven troop movements, as a result of said war. I'm now wondering whether it wasn't Beastmen or Wood Elves that did it, but Skaven pillagers.

Then I took a look at the maps involved and uh...

Yeah, probably not, honestly.

A second look at some maps, shows that the Grey Mountains are mountains which have multiple major Skaven settlements. Nordland and Middenland, far less so. However, there is Skaven presence under Middenheim -- and that city is near the border of the two provinces. Mmmaybe theoretically?

--------------------------------------------------

Anyway! On to my last idea.

So, uh, you know how we saw Alkharad astral projecting and communicating with his disciples? And we just wrote a paper on that.

Well, you know what other method of weird communication we've also seen? The We.

[ ] Investigate how the We communicates with... itself?

I'm wondering about taking the "Study the We's communication" action now that we wrote the book on Alkharad's control and communication methods of undead. Or at least, I assume the "how does this guy talk to his disciples from the field?" was part of the paper we just wrote, rather than the remaining one since the remaining one is about him being able to "assume a form of projected mist." Hrm, now that I say that, I suppose the telecommunications parts we saw might be divided among the two paper topics we had.

Probably there won't actually be a connection here. But I briefly wondered about things.

I dunno, man, Collection-sempai has recently undergone a goth phase, and is going 50 Shades of Dark Elf on Mathilde.

My romance leanings continue to slowly slide toward Johann as his interests continue to align with ours even more. The happy home life of murdering skaven and raising their pets is pretty stronk. Dame LoreMaster-Moulder Lord Magister Mathilde Weber-Goldorderton(I can't find a last name for Johann :V) Wedding bells are ringing!

Idealized romance we break Belegar away from tradition entirely and start dating, but it's a doubtful situation.

It's pretty creepy to have had a thing with her dad, and then to go after his daughter. If she wasn't related to Van Hal it'd be fine, but she is, and that makes it pretty ick. It's like we couldn't have him so we decided to use his daughter as a substitute.
We didn't have "a thing" though Mathilde was attracted to him that was the end of it.

Lurker Packs are armed with slingshots. Lightly armoured skirmishers can very much use a quiet ranged option. When you consider the legspan of a hunter and the sort of pulling strength that lets them climb across ceilings carrying paralysed orcs, it's clear these have plenty of stopping power.

Spider Sappers: Web builders don't like direct combat but if they can get to the battlefield in advance they love tripwire activated mines. Turns out silk bound rubble or even gravel is an effective field fortification material too. Given time to work a squad of spider sappers can pull down surprisingly solid walls by attaching them with silk to solid floor then ratcheting the tension.
