While it's true that in modern english 'insect' refers specifically to six-legged arthropods, history is generally signficantly less clear cut than that. And even in modern times I was able to find two Entomology departments which talk about studying spiders. And a number of other fairly reputable looking sources where entomologists talk about spiders. So, I don't actually think it was a fuck up.

Fair enough, BoneyM has the books purchased under arthropods though.

So about the romance novels. There have been numerous moments where it's been clear Mathilde reads them. It doesn't seem unfair to assume she has read new ones since we entered our employ in Stirland.
Obviously, Mathilde has a life outside of our choices.
Clearly, a part of this life includes buying and reading these novels.
We do not need to micromanage her. She will enjoy life without us doing so.

With about an hour and a half to go, the compromise vote has made it to only 2 votes behind No Purchases, with full romance an additional 5 votes back.

In that case, perhaps this is a silly expense.

[X] [LIBRARY] No purchase.

The romance is to make up for the vote trading with @picklepikkl

If an Extensive collection is one bookshelf worth, a regular +1 collection is like... What, 3 books?

Books appear to be worth more than their weight in gold in the Warhammer verse.
In an era where every unique book has to be engraved or cut into printing blocks and then bound by skilled labor? They really are.
I do not believe we need an immediate use for it. No point throwing the fish back overboard.

That was not at all the message from the Bursar, she specifically spoke about the method of acquisition, and to not go looking for ways to acquire more.

Going hard on burning cash for transitory bonuses bothers me. Any single given purchase might seem justifiable, but taken as a whole I think it's showing Mathilde to have poor judgement.

I'm going to have to withdraw. I'm sure I've made my thoughts and feelings on the matter clear by now.

Important note, back when we did the Asarnil Memoirs for a much smaller amount of money theres a strong pressure to spend all the earmarked money as promptly as possible. The loophole we're currently driving the bulk of the money through is "This money is given to me by dwarves, and I'll be giving it back in a way which satisfies everyone's honor" of which "buy lots of stuff from dwarf vendors" fits into.

Our generic funds now, those we should be more careful about spending since theres no pressure on THOSE.

No there wasn't.
"Word did trickle out about events down south," the publisher says to you. "But really, it's Wizard Chic you've to thank for driving up interest in our Elven allies and magical creatures like dragons. Apparently they find it all rather romantic, the centuries-long quest to prove himself against those that cast him out by selling his sword to all the noble races of the Old World." You expected a handful of coin; you get a chest. You worriedly tithe, raising a few eyebrows at the Bursar's Offers which lead you to write a report on the whole business to submit to the College, just in case questions start being raised about all this money.
That's all the text on it. We got a few raised eyebrows and that's it.

Romance novels are more fun to buy a handful of ourself every time we're in a city. Also a bit of other fiction. From the book trading circle POV having the latest publications, especially instalments of series is at least as good as having an extensive, expensive back catalogue.

Actually, just realized, we're sort of double dipping on book purchases. We purchased a bunch during the actual turn vote and then because of problems with the way that made the vote evolve, BoneyM decided to alter how we purchase both library and rune things so now we get another opportunity to buy a large pile of books. From a structural view point, I'm not sure how I feel about that; @BoneyM, I'm not sure how you feel about that and I'm not sure how much it would bother others, but maybe the [LIBRARY] vote this time shouldn't actually count? Seeing as we already spent a bunch during the turn itself (which happened to give us a bit of an advantage. :🤷:

Is Ikit Claw around here? Cause if yes, things are about to get really nasty for us.
Doesn't he live in Skavenblight, where he can maintain the greatest possible level of control over the Skyre bits of the Under-Empire and keep a close eye on ambitious subordinates? He'd have no reason to be hanging out in what appears to be a relatively minor Skyre holding in Karak Eight Peaks.

He's probably alive, though, since he's hundreds of years old in canon as I recall (wiki seems to bear this out?). More than can be said for most skaven or greenskin characters.

It's so we can't buy books ahead of the next action block vote which is fair so that we're not so informed we can always snag relevant books for the actions, if it were changed so that we can't buy books now then effectively we'd actually have the opposite effect of what you're saying is the problem we'd be missing out on a turn of booking buying.

[X] [SPIDER] The We can be a powerful military ally against the Skaven.
[X] [SPIDER] The We can be a welcome addition to the multispecies community of Karak Eight Peaks.

[X] [UNDUMGI] Francesco Caravello, Tilean ex-merchant

[X] [ARMOUR] It should be returned to the Hold it was stolen from, to build strong ties among the Karaz Ankor.

Why are people so against Romance Novels? Are we really short on gold?

I also don't really understand the urgency to "dump our wealth" the problem isn't that we have money now, but we shouldn't go out of our way to acquire more by abusing our powers.

Personally, I would say a broke magister is a lot more susceptible to abusing their power if they get an unexpected expense than one who has a sizable nest egg.

I fundamentally disagree with buying books being a frivolous expense.

You could maybe say that about the Romance books, but that option is in third place right now.

Skaven/Skaven Magic - We will be dealing with Skaven for years (likely decades) to come. Trading some of our obscene wealth for a better chance of dealing with them is a no-brainer.

Greenskin Magic - Same as above - there's not going to be a shortage of Shamans we need to deal with.

Grey Magic (2 College Favor) - We are a Grey Mage. A bonus to our research rolls is the least frivolous thing imaginable.

Amber Magic - Having a collection of texts on all 8 Winds will likely be useful if we ever get close to High Magic, in the midterm it's a useful reference for any Amber Mages stationed here, and in the short term we'll be relying on an Amber magic effect to translate the spooders.

Linguistics - Our assigned task next term will be to play translator, and in the long run we're almost certainly going to have to translate something, either because we want to read a more esoteric foreign text or because our home is a global trade hub.

Warpstone - Skaven, a carrot for Johann, and a reduction in the odds that an experiment will go horribly wrong and leave us with only 7 peaks.

Morr - A cover for the info from the Libris Mortis, plus a source of factchecking.

Karaz Ankor - ... We live in a dwarf hold.

Daemons -Snakejuice.

Literally none of these are frivolous.

Why are people so against Romance Novels? Are we really short on gold?
While we're not short on gold, we do need to properly manage it. There are a lot of expensive things we still need (ie. a majestic wizard tower) which will take up a chunk of funds. Given that we can't be guaranteed to get such a windfall again, we really should manage it a bit more closely.
