What, taxation being the fundamental function of government? That has been true throughout human history.
I don't think this is true unless you stretch the definition of "taxation" really far. I would say that a fundamental aspect of government is extracting some kind of concessions from the subjects, but I wouldn't call all of them taxation, historically. You have corvee, palace economies, and pay-per-use functions, for example.

As far as the economic situation in Stirland, we need to be 100 percent certain that the EIC is there to bail out Roswita when she starts seeing sense, or Stirland is toast. In that vein, allowing Anton to marry any of Wilhelmina's choices is effectively ceding control of the company to her. Anton will be guided by his wife, who will be guided by Wilhelmina. Marrying him ourselves will guarantee us controlling interest and thus the ability to make sure that Stirland's interests will be at the front when necessary, while still allowing Wilhelmina to work her magic and get her cut.

I am tempted to poke some non-personally-invested (literally, we own shares of company! quite a conflict of interests) Grey Magister to keep an eye.

So I actually agree with this and actually seems sort-of important. Because no matter what Wilhelmina said it feels as if she's looking for the edge.
Anyone else have thoughts on this? Am I overreacting?

The real problem with the EIC is that when Wilhelmina bites it I have no clue who could ever be trusted enough and skilled enough to run it.

In other news, apparently no one trusts the man who found a dragon and a hundred cannons for our campaign to find true love, not even himself. That's just so depressing.

And all of those are taxes. Ur the first city state in history had taxes, we have their ledgers.

And literally the first thing Roswita did on getting the job was to fire one of the most competent and loyal of her advisers, and in doing so convince another extremely loyal and skilled adviser to quit. GG, her, GG.
Not only that, her third extremely loyal and skilled adviser quit soon after. She's left with CastleMan, who can do some building options, Gustav, who is an acceptable leader of expensive pisoliers, and Kasmir, an acceptable priest who's been getting better. Notably Gustav and Castleman are in thrall to the Imperial Spymaster and Talabecland, respectively, and Kasmir may or may not still be a creature of the Grand Theogonist.

So the three advisers that were exceedingly competent and loyal quit, and the three that were acceptable and serving other masters stayed behind. Good job Roswita.

Debatable. Anton's shares in the company COME FROM Wilhelmina's.

I wanna keep messing about in K8P, and doing our own projects in between - which mix of the two is less important.

He doesn't have time. Honestly, it's impressive he's managed to remain unmarried this long. He's got to get married, and he's making the best decision he has. He's chosen us. He clearly didn't think we'd go for it, but he's equally clearly signaling that we're his preferred choice.

I can only conclude we have very different definitions of "taxes".

Granted, it's greys; they probably already are.

Seems like a good idea to me. Maybe combine it with the general report of Mathilde being on track to earn lots of money from the EIC, ask the Bursar for direction what to do with that at some point.

The cannons and Deathfang didn't have tits

(I assume, I don't know what they get up to out in Wissenland)

You know, this seemed sudden from Anton, but it is perfectly in character.
His Antonsense already pointed him towards the next Dragon, the next cannon army, the single thing that can change the course of history for the better.
Marrying him is destiny ordained, the survival of Stirland, no, the world, depend on this.

"Help, working in the best interests of my County and Empire have made me fabulously wealthy, what do?"

I doubt we are going to get him back

There's very little true love and necromancy can't accomplish.

Or the new Elector-Countess is martially inclined but with poor stewardship and is thus focusing on dealing with the undead to the detriment of the economy.

Frankly the situation isn't terrible. It isn't even bad. It is certainly not critical.

And since Mathilde got fired it isn't her responsibility to particularly manage that area. She's got K8P to aid for now, alongside all her other papers and research.

I mean technically he doesn't? Unless he hates his extended family enough that any of them getting the inheritance is a no go.

Does he though? Does he?

If anyone tries to force him into a marriage we can stop them! We might be quite far away, but a strategic placement of SUDDEN GREY WIZARD WITH GREATSWORD ought to stop anyone from doing something untowards.

Roswita has been lucky in one thing: when she decides to bring the taxation system back in house the EIC, suitably compensated, will hand it over in a more orderly state than when we bought it.

I can't really find myself to blame her for not wanting to work next to someone who literally might explode any day. Especially since she already had a Spymaster lined up who she knew she could trust..

She should've tried keeping better hold of Anton though. Guy's a miracle-worker-
She fired Mathilde without even bothering to check her qualifications, loyalty, or what have you. No chance to prove herself, no demoting her to work under her guy and ease the transition, she didn't even ask Mathilde to turn over any assets she might of had or her contact network. Roswita just flat out kicked her out without a second thought or even bothering to talk to her first, and if Mathilde/the players had been of the mind to they could have really screwed over her and her new spymaster in retaliation. Yeah, she didn't want magic near her and wanted her guy in the role, but still.

The fact that another councillor immediately quit over her decision should have been a major warning sign for her that her approach was flawed, but apparently not.

Is negative stewardship possible?
Probably not that bad, but I think she is extremely focused on her war and willing to gut her administration if it meant possibly ending the Sylvania situation.

The big issue at the moment is that she obviously has her own ideas of how to improve the Stirland army, namely through guns. Which while not a bad idea is expensive to say the least and she chose to do it at a time where she was already hurting on funds. But rather than consolidate or make the conversion slowly she instead chose to push it forward as fast as possible, at least from my reading, while going all in on Sylvania.

It's rather obvious that she is in the early stage of the Witch Hunter mindset, where you have most of the doctrine shoved in your head but haven't had the world experience to temper that doctrine with practicality.

Well, she's not managed to burn down the province while we were gone, so she's already exceeded my expectations of her. The tax farming is a bit stupid, but less stable polities have survived more than one generation of it and if she can make significant progress in finishing the purge of Sylvania then she'll still have managed to make a net contribution to the world.

Of course not, Julia Massif is a proper lady and it would besmirch her honour to say she took full advantage of her influence and power to have her pick of the men of Stirland and rotated them out as they started to bore her.
We've created a monst-
That would be a dealbreaker for her. Julia has discovered she likes power and influence.
Oh, shit, we may have actually created a monster!
And the EIC is still growing...

*Title chosen mainly because I don't know what Warhammer's analogue to Opium is and Cathay probably would probably stop any smugglers anyway.

I would be interested in being the human faction leader with the sidejob being scouting the karaks i guess as in a ideal world if possible but we would have to have capable subordinates to run things when we would be distracted with our other job and vice versa .

And its been awhile but what could we get with the imperial colleges favor cause we got 17 favor with 3 pending categories aswell for further favors and the seed of regrowth is almost op and it cost 9 favors i think. Im not a whf expert outside following quests to be honest so what items would make sense with the new favors we acquired from the colleges. Or how much would getting more help mage wise to the karak cost favor wise even if its just another grey mage to run the intrigue network for the trade road for example and so forth or any of the other winds .

Also another thought instead of the greatsword idea what about shortsword or a enchanted dagger or two for sneaking power since there is a limit of 10 outside the two great runesmiths doing it so it is a thought to pursue people.
