So about that sword we wanted? Could we commission Maximilian to make it?

He's a gold wizard so probably has a good understanding of metallurgy and will be studying under a smith in Zhufbar (so he's bound to have some prior experience with smithing). He's also human so probably won't have the same aversion to swords that proper Dwarven smiths have and be more familiar with swords in general. After some learning, he should be able to apply Dwarven techniques using Dwarven materials which will allow him to make us a pretty good quality sword.

It'll probably be cheaper than commissioning it from an actual Dwarven smith too.

[X] You've been out of touch for a while. Head to Barak Varr and then Altdorf, and catch up with what's been happening in the Empire.

[X] Write a series of papers on the magical phenomena you witnessed. Or better yet, get your Journeymanlings to do the actual writing.
[X] All this time away has made you miss your friends. Visit Anton and Wilhelmina.

[X] There's a lot of prime real estate currently unclaimed. Stake out a prime position for a wizard's tower.

[] Travel to Karaz-a-Karak with King Belegar for the striking out of several well-aged grudges.
This suggests a future assisting Karak Eight Peaks with foreign relations, as a Spymaster focused outwards.

[] You could help the Undumgi and the Ulricans establish themselves.
This suggests a future assisting Karak Eight Peaks, as leader of the Undumgi and point of contact for the Ulricans.

This suggests a future catching up on your pre-existing study topics.

Choosing these three because I figure it neatly sets Mathilde here in K8P, but would still give us the chance to travel. Most often to the Empire probably.

These three are def what I'm the most interested in, also, Mathilde bapping Maximillian was freaking adorable. "No sweet summer child, watch this."

Wait until he's confident in what he's learned from the Dwarves and he'll do it for you for free if you let him tell everyone that he made your sword. Some might remember how way back during enchanting conversation I said the way to make money from it is to hand out a few examples to prominent citizens and hope it sparks interest. Mathilde would be the motherlode of exactly that for Maximilian.

@BoneyM : how will being a Spymaster for a Dwarf King be different than one for a Elector Count? Do they have different priorities? Spying and lack of Criminals? Are you just focused on ending grudges?

We need to finish at least a few if the things that we have pending. Build a toser, get more equipment, write a book and study for a time.

After that, lets go to see the world. I always wanted to read more about lizardmen, are the colonies a thing yet?

On one hand, having a foot into the Dwarven Kingdoms is a huge, huge opportunity for the Grey Order. They could likely pay you just to stay there to ensure Manlin Empire interests. On the other, kind of want to settle down and write another paper, deal with the eggs, and just do some research.

Edit: I think I'll settle for this. Having a Tower in Dawi lands means that even if we're not spymaster, we're still good neighbors and wouldn't mind helping our friend The King out once in a while.

Personally I'm really not a fan of locking Mathilde away and dedicating her effort to research actions. "Technological/Magical advancement" quests tend to be either really boring updates describing tiny improvements to X, or cheese quests about plucky teenagers repeatedly revolutionising the world with little explanation or depth.

Besides, it's unlikely Mathilde, an experienced soldier and spymaster who took the requisite theory courses in college will be a greater help as a researcher than as battlewizard or spymaster.

... and the thread goes wild!!

I just realized, that last waaagh-sapping counterspell probably counts as the protecting we promised (that, and general counterspell duty). Of course Ranald had a finger on the dice, making sure his favourite totally-not-a-priestess did her job :V

Right, vote:

Basially, anything in and around K8P and Belebro is fine with me. Although I especially like the tavern idea (whether we're actually major or not), as long as it leaves some time for personal projects. Possibly combine it with a wizards tower, so we have a tavern (how's "The Witch Hunter's Hat" as a tentative name?), with a tower jutting from one corner.

Incidentally, I'm a miniwargamer by choice, and this quest is one of the reasons why I'm slowly building a dwarf army. I now have a strong urge to expand them with two (2) units of mercenary humans (a small archer unit and a larger melee block) and one (1) grey wizard... well done, BoneyM. (please, guys, stay in K8P, I don't need more crazy inspiration).

I don't think anyone wants to do purely research. I mean I'm really excited about some of the research, but that does not mean I don't want to help the dwarfs in more direct ways too.

I'm game for that, if he can best the best swords the dwarves can make.

Would a 15-20 favor sword be made out of gromril?

I do have a really effective poking stick in the form of the Grey Order. There's a backlog of bits and bobs that have built up and a year or so getting through that would be a nice interlude, but not too long will pass before the pokes become prods become jabs.

(unless it truly does seem like the majority of the thread really wants to go full shut-in academic)

You know what, I'm convinced. Mathilde organized the Stirland Watch. She has the institutional knowledge to set up the Roadwardens. And they won't have a problem with serving the Protector.

Make Mathilde the Mayor of a major Karak, on the best road to Ind. Make her a tower and a scholar, who comes down to town to solve issues and talks to the Ulricans. No Sigmar to annoy her, either. For in truth, where else but in distant Arabia, would you find a town ruled by a Wizard in the Old World? From a tavern no less?

Everyone who wants it, for Mathile, the Lady of the Peak, of Morning Fog and Evening Shadow! Lady of Undumgi!

And if that isn't a magicly significant location, I'll eat my hat. Where a god was robbed. That is where we build our shrine to Ranald.

EDIT: The trade routes and links with old friends and the Grey order can be used as hooks for story lines in the Empire, and Mat will be busy enough trying to turn Mercs into a citilized town/nation, with Dwarves and Halflings around. And the backdrop of Skaven plots and Orc fighting will make for an energetic time. As well as actually securing that Road in the mountains and all the issues that come with trade, once people and expeditions start trying their luck. Think of all the cultist that might try and use trade caravans to move in and start shit. This will be fun.

EDIT2: Would that work @BoneyM ? Asking the dwarves for the space for the Shrine to Ranald in Karag Lhune, where Mork was robbed, or would that be for later turns?

My main thing is that I really want to get back to the Empire so that we can investigate what was causing all those disappearances, since that is really worrying to me.
