Ugh. Hubris is a coward's words.

Besides, where exactly was it mentioned in the update that Mathilde was exhausted anyway? Exhausted to the point of having a malus, I mean. Absolutely none! For all we know, she might just got into a run and still got a few more laps to go in her!
Yeah, Mat is completly fucking wiped, and more than that, chanaling the Warrgh energy has messed with her spell casting, at least temporarily. There is a part of the update where she says just climbing a lot of stairs would be beyond her if not for the tirelessness of the Armor.

EDIT: I just think that as long we stick to just a Lesser Magics, one we mastered allready, we can do this. And only because the Mastery esentially makes us tireless. Also because we know/suspect there are no casters/shamans in the mountain, or they would have raised the alarm. So if all we need to do is sword people, we can do that. That and getting to the dwarves to fill them in on a dead Warboss and a disrupted major ritual matters, I think.

I would love to stick to the plan. But, I don't trust Mathilde could make it to friendly lines without getting into a fight. (I wouldn't expect her to join in the fighting afterwards given her state).

"Manling! What did you do!?"
The Grey Magister shrugged, tiredly.
"The Orc priests were in the middle of a rituals days in the casting, and years in the making. With so much power around... well. It turns out that with a lot of skill and bit of luck, when you catch the Gods when they are committed, even Gods can bleed."
Let's all just take a moment to appreciate that when something fucking weird happens, Kragg now thinks 'probably that fucking wizard.' And he's RIGHT.

I don't think we can deny that among the Expedition, we are now That Guy. If dwarves had memes...

Still what are the risks of a miscasts compared to a horde overrunning the defenders near the citadel and hundreds of people dying?
That depends a lot on how powerful the spell is, how badly Mathilde messes up, whether Tzeentch is sniffing around at any given time, how strongly the Winds of Magic are blowing, and a dozen other factors.
Here are some examples from the miscast tables in the TTRPG:

Very minor - Milk curdles, wine goes sour, and food spoils near the caster
Minor - lose 1 wound regardless of armor or toughness
Moderately low - Gain 1 insanity point
Moderately high - daemon imp attacks you
Very bad - lesser daemons attack you
Catastrophic - Sucked into the Realm of Chaos

It's hardly forbidden, whose going to forbid it? It's a book and only a book not a sentient artifact like the Books of Nagash. The knwolege is not going to do anything to Mathilde besuides increase her overall understanding of magic and maybe the divine.
See:

7. No Magister may ever study the Forbidden Lores of the Daemonic Powers, nor the unholy ways of Necromancy, nor any other sorcery or witchcraft that utilises the wicked powers of Dark Magic. Any Magister found disregarding this Article is guilty of an Abominable Act and is both Heretic and Traitor and will be put to sword and fire immediately.

There might be some wiggle room to allow us to reverse engineer a spell that we've seen used, but that ends when we read the foundational text of modern necromancy. We read that book and we are marked for death for the rest of our life, and our life depends on keeping that hidden forever. Honestly, I am really tired of a new potential avenue of study popping up and people immediately saying that we totally need to read the Libre Mortis to make the most of it, like it's just some lucky drop that gives a +1 to magic when equipped. The book was never a reward to be used but a responsibility to be managed. It is only with this new artifact that studying the book isn't a complete death sentence.

Let us remember that sacred lesson:
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

In the spirit of gambling, I believe the term to use here is to, ah, cash in one's chips.

Having been doing a re-read, I sure am glad that y'all didn't take any Ranald's Debt during character creation. :V

"Sure I could use Mathilde as a conduit to suck up all this God Juice, but I just love inconvenient critical failures!"

[X] The enemy reaction is greater than expected. Make your way to join the imminent battle outside.
-[X]Carefully.

Let's see who we can keep alive.
Huh, good point. We don't need to fight to be useful. Stand in the back and get closer to heal a hero unit if something goes wrong on the frontline. Or we can stay with the artillery.

We just had to roll to cast--
Because the mechanics are a bit non-intuitive, I will point out that Mathilde was rolling for spells she normally doesn't need to. A note to this effect has been added to the update.
Pretty much.

We've sniped our second war boss of the campaign, making us two for two on those guys, and we also interrupted their magical ritual which had a failure state of turning into a Rogue Avatar of Gork (as in, a giant evil statue that can only be destroyed by pounding it into dust or killing the caster, except we killed the caster before it turned on, so it would have been basically invincible to us). That's more than any other single individual in the campaign could or probably ever will be able to brag about, and just as a result of today's efforts. Calling us lazy for sitting the rest out just isn't accurate.
Ugh. Hubris is a coward's words.
Finally, these words are reserved for when we're doing cool things. They're not a license to act thoughtlessly, or disregard all other considerations of effort and possibility.

Even if the dwarves question why Mathilde is taking a nap, Mathilde always looks like she knows what she's doing. Therefore, taking a nap was the optimal decision and no one can gainsay her. :p

Also, getting into more active conflict while exhausted is a bad move.

AND ANOTHER THING: Mathilde isn't a battle wizard, capable of wielding spells that alter the face of entire battlefields. Her effect on the battle would be equivalent to another knight. Another already exhausted knight. Another already exhausted knight who runs the risk of exploding into daemons inside friendly lines.

[X] Keep to the original plan. Find the invasion force and join them as they fight their way through Karag Nar.

Yeah, we are spent, at least until we get some rest.
I imagine that if we answer the question about our whereabouts with "was helping one god steal orkish gods' powers, and also killed a warboss", they will understand our exhaustion. :V

edit: although Kragg will, naturally, Disapprove. Probably even more than usual.
He already thinks that whatever is happening to Orks is our fault just because he has no idea what is happening.
Incidentally, he is right, but still.
Kragg gazed over the Eastern Valley as chaos engulfed the plans of younger and less wise beings. Something in Karag Nar had riled up the Grobi mightily, undoubtedly to do with that ridiculous Mhornokrul.

I think the primary beneficiaries of a Greenskin civil war would have been the Skaven. The Dwarfs would have gotten a reprieve, but they wouldn't have had the capacity to take advantage, other than taking Karak Eight Peaks faster.

Look I get it. But sticking around has a main risk of its own. What if the dwarves pull back? What if they can't take the mountain? We are tired. And possibly a direct target of a pissed of Mork. Going back to our alies also means we aren't alone behind enemy lines, while tired and injured.

Something else to consider is that the wealth here is actually that important, as Karak Eight Peaks will need to hire generations of mercenaries.

Particularly significant items may also be diplomatically important as gifts/returns.
