Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

Good catch. Shenanigans are afoot, but luckily hard work beat out daddy's money. That dude is in trouble now.
So... apparently other people knew the matchups before the tournament even started.

Maybe he had inside connections to the Inner or Core sect? I just can't imagine that in the minutes we had to prepare for our opponents he would have been able to commission a talisman this strong and have his family pay for it.
It definitely seems like Sun Liling manipulated the bracket, though there was probably some pushback to keep it from getting ridiculous. Gan, Lu Feng and Ji Rong in one match was probably something she could get away with, but not like Sun Liling, Ji Rong and Bai Meizhen.

We do have to be wary about somebody possessing a similar talisman in the Round of 16.

[X] ...Seek out Shen Hu, he gave you quite a runaround, it can't hurt to make nice with a peer like him

I think he was hunting down the Cai-aligned disciplines that we spared, actually. Basically, he forced the match to end by taking out everyone left, even though he was somewhat losing the running battle until then.
Yes, he countered our strategy and relied on his toughness to handle anything we could throw at him while he was working, but he was loosing. If there were another 15 or so yellows we might have had enough time to beat him.

He played well, but I think if the match had lasted longer it would have been a win in our book.

Yes, it seems that we, and more to the point Cai, were beaten at the political game, that is actually a really poor showing from Cai - I am sure her Mother noticed.

Ya know thinking about it, while Shen Hu has some issues with over cultivating and seems to have an cultivation art which encourages fugue states I actually want to work on a working relationship with him. He's powerful, his arts provide a contrast to ours (Languid Summer Art) which I think could provide some insight into our own stuff like Elegy, and he has a pretty calm and happy seeming personality. Not sure if he has any noble background, but linking him with the Ling family through some kind of business relationship or something seems workable past the Inner Sect.

Or if he stays on as a friend in the Sect which could be quite helpful, both in Inner next year and after we leave. Seems a good idea to maintain multiple ties to our alma mater as it were.

To be fair.

The problem here is that Shenhua basically tied Renxiang's hands from the start. She can't get any support aside from her name unless she buys it in performance.

While all these other houses aren't so frugal, and are perfectly willing to use their influence to gain advantage.

Renxiang literally has no way of playing the political game here because Shenhua is the only weapon she can use, and Shenhua does what she wants (And what she wants is for Renxiang to have a hard time. Either she'll be tempered and be better, or she'll lose and that's all she was capable of)

I wonder if Suyin passed her test. It really would be great if she was coming to inner with us. Of all the people we associate with she seems the most likely to follow along after us some day.

Actually, I think it's likely Shenua set these matches up, or at least let them be set up. She clearly was leery of her daughter's vassals and likely wanted to see them tested hard. She was more critical of Gan even, and he got the harder setup.

He choked then, as he heard a high, clear voice sing out. His spear fell from nerveless fingers as a horrible cold washed through him, freezing his flesh, freezing his qi. In his weakness, phantoms tore at him, shadowy claws tearing his robes and skin alike. As Zou Chen fell to his knees, the frozen qi stealing his strength, he glimpsed her in the mist, standing atop a boulder. In the mist and darkness, the only thing he could make out were her eyes, glinting like chips of glacial ice.
Why do I get the feeling Qi's eyes will be glowing red sometime later on in the tournament?

Because he seems interesting, and having a friend in the inner sect once Qi leaves besides Xiulan seems like it'd be a good idea.

Yeah I will point out thinking that Sun Liling who was able to actually influence the brackets is overestimating her. That kind of thing doesn't come from the disciple level.

Hahahaha! I just realized! People have been doing opposition research!
It was of course, at that moment that he heard the faint notes of that damnable song, echoing across the snowy field that they had gathered in. His gaze snapped upward, to the black cliffs that loomed above, and there he saw it. A titanic wave of mist, flowing down the slopes. He heard the others cry out in alarm, reorienting their formation toward the enemy. He felt his mouth grow dry as it sped toward them, flowing with the speed and fury of a spring flooding. Since when had she been able to summon so much mist? When had she been so fast?

Gritting his teeth, Zou Chen raised his right arm, wrapped in the lengthy chains beads that formed the Rippling Resplendance Rosary, and shouted the signal to the others to prepare their strike. They couldn't afford a mistake now!

As the forward edge of the mist engulfed the two boys at the front, he channeled his qi into the rosary, until the beads began to shine, and then to crack as he overloaded the talisman, preparing it's emergency function. As the first tendrils of mist curled around his ankles, he thrust his hand forward with a triumphant shout. The beads on his arm exploded violently, a rippling wave of visible lake qi erupting outward through the mist, leaving his arm numb.

...But the mist did not vanish, he saw to his increasing alarm. It lightened, and grew thinner, but it wasn't gone. The girl to his right, her bow and arrows imbued with enough supporting techniques and talisman's to glow like a miniature sun, still loosed her shot, with a howl of wind and thunder, but the barely visible shadow at the center of the mist merely flickered to the side, avoiding the projectile with contemptuous ease… or perhaps it had never been the techniques caster in the first place.

Zou Chen backed up, alarm building as he batted away the shadowy claws of some twisted thing that had sought his throat, even as the mist grew thicker once more, chilling him to the bone as it dragged at his limbs and seeped into his channels, leeching away at his vigor. He heard the others crying out and fighting, and turned to find them, but they were no longer visible. He fought his way toward sounds regardless, the darting blade of his spear batting away phantoms and curning the mist around around him.

And all the while, that horrible song played unceasing.

Zou Chen cursed, his spearpoint slashing through the twisted phantom of a wolf and darted toward where he last remembered seeing his allies. This shouldn't have been happening. His talisman should have destroyed any qi construct not at the fourth or fifth step of the third realm, it wasn't fair! That damned common rat…

There was nothing in that gaze, no pity, no recognition, no care at all.

Was he really so small?
"This is a stealth expert?"
"...yes."
"This?"
"Yes."
"Stealth."
"Normally she's much quieter than this!"
"Sure, sure. Don't worry, I'll make sure your seeing eye/hearing helper spirit is something nice."
