Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

Argent Mirror changes:
Passive Effects
-Adds three five dice to all tests and clashes to resist or bypass illusion effects
-Adds three five dice to all perception tests
-Adds two three dice to composure and resolve tests as well as dispel clashes
-Adds four dice to survival, investigation, and empathy tests
-Adds two three dice to spiritual defenses
-[Permanent] Allows the user to sense qi, out to one hundred two hundred meters away. The user may tell the cultivation realm of living things of their own stage or lower, and the realm of those higher.-
-Allows the user, on a successful perception test, to determine a living things primary elemental alignments, spirit binding connections and overall level of qi.

Serene Reflection: oo ooo
Cost: 5 qi
Instant, response
The user balances and cycles their qi, expelling external influences. Dispels up to two negative effects from the user after a successful clash, and grants three six additional die to spiritual defense against the effects caster for three turns.
-Tranquil Rebuke
[No longer used separately]. Centering themselves, the user finds serenity, and in doing, rises above the world, as the mountain stands above the earth. When used, adds four dice to the users spiritual defense. Any spiritual technique which targets the user suffers harsh repercussions if their technique fails to find purchase. If the user wins such a defensive clash against a spiritual attack, the attacker suffers one point of perfect lethal damage, as well as suffering a three die penalty to their own defenses for the next turn.

Discerning Gaze: oo
Cost: 3 Qi
Instant, response
Channeling qi into their senses the user greatly enhances their ability to discern the truth of the world, gaining four additional dice on all perception and empathy tests for the length of a scene, in addition if the user is under the effects of an illusion or other sense affecting technique, they receive an immediate attempt to break out of it, with a three six die bonus.

Imperturbable Peak
Cost 6 Qi
Instant
In battle, he who maintains the wider view and a clearer head is victorious. Upon activation spiritual debuffs on allies within fifty meters of two dice or less are automatically dispelled, unless their casters cultivation equals or exceeds the users. The user may then attempt to dispel up to three other debuffing techniques at a six die bonus. In addition, for each debuff dispelled this way, the user receives a two die bonus to perception and spiritual defense for four turns.

[X] Internalize Argent Mirror
-[X] Ling Qi receives a four die bonus when attempting to discern lies or see through illusions.

[X] Internalize Argent Mirror
-[X] Ling Qi and Allies of at least four dots positive relation within one hundred meters may reroll a failed perception test once per combat or scene.

B
ecause rerolls scale much better than a few extra dice. I don't remember many cases of multiple such tests in a row for a combat or event. And of course it also affects allies.

[X] Internalize Argent Mirror
-[X] Ling Qi receives a four die bonus when attempting to discern lies or see through illusions.

Seeing through lies, even those in yourself? Oh hell yes.

[X] Internalize Argent Mirror
-[X] Ling Qi and Allies of at least four dots positive relation within one hundred meters may reroll a failed perception test once per combat or scene.

Failed perception test: Ambush Imminent, spy watching you, etc, etc. Useful against peer and near-peer opponents.

It's nice how SCS picked up that Moon alignment though - it's the perfect fit for a follower of the Grinning Moon.

And Argent Mirror - ah, that Qi sense made permanent is what I was hoping for. Ideally we'll get something similar out of AE, specifically the tremorsense, if we choose to Master that Art as well.

Seeing through lies, even those in yourself? Oh hell yes.

My understanding is that this applies regardless of the sub-vote chosen, but I admit I could be wrong.

I was of the impression that these domain powers will grow regardless. So a modest die bonus will likely translate to being able to achieve higher levels of success rather than reducing the odds of failure.

EDIT: Ahh, good.

Domain Weapon die pool should be 38 then, not too shabby!

Yes but do we want to keep on going for things that helps with the CRX parts of our future? Shape LQ entirely into a person that fullfills that kind of role? Just now it just seems like people are going 'this works great with our job and mechanics' without thinking of the long term knock of effect it will have on LQ's Domain and Way.
I can't speak for others and if people want to pick it for mechanical bonuses, I can't stop them either. Axel Fones had a good explanation which I agree with, and then there's what I've said beforehand. I like the fluff around internalizing AM, and don't have a strong opinion of how we do it but I do have enough of one that I like the bonuses to lies and illusions more.

Looks like my suspicions about SCS being a sister Art to FVM and also having a second CL7 stage were true after all. Throwing actions at SCS will largely alleviate the action vacuum people were a little worried about in the first month or two of next year, I should think. We also got that last Qi point too, without having to invest the 40-odd excess SCS EXP into a partial point that would've sat there for eternity.

On the topic of Argent Mirror, it looks like nothing is going to stem this massive tide, but I will issue a few words of caution. First, while it seems like we have a lot of open slots now, that won't be the case forever, and what's being taken up by Argent Mirror will eventually crowd out something people would've liked too. Second, we aren't likely to have as good a time with Argent Current or Argent Storm, and it's been said the Argents work well together. AM could be a lone Argent in our Domain. Third, it probably isn't coincidence the 3 first Argent Arts end in the first level of Green; they're probably meant to be extremely tempting for developing Domains.

While I'm willing to sacrifice some action efficiency in the name of the tourney, permanent alterations to Ling Qi's soul are a little far even for me on one of my better days (then again I did used to cast Mind Blank regularly in my 3.5e days ...)

I think the most important part is how it gives incentive to master an Argent Art. Argent Pulse and AC/AS also giving a permanent bonus, is reason enough to master those two even though they aren't really great not will we use them in our domain.

Forgotten Vale Melody changes:
Passive Effects
-Adds three four bonus die to all music based expression rolls
-Adds five six bonus dice to all attempts to resist dispels on water and darkness techniques
-[Permanent] User receives no penalties for acting in low light or darkness
-User receives three bonus die on defense against sound and music based techniques
-Expression is used as Mastery when using this art (does not receive the previous passive bonus when used this way)
-[Permanent] Instruments wielded by the user may be used to make sound based melee attacks at up to ten meters range. These attacks may be used in conjunction with appropriate arts without interrupting the melody. DV equals manipulation or expression, whichever is higher.-Permanent
-An additional three qi may be spent to 'hold' the arts effect for one turn as if playing had continued. Cannot be used if art is interrupted by hostile action.

Mist of the Vale: ooo
Cost 5
The users melody causes a light mist to roll forth from their instrument. The mist is filled with deceptive shadows and sounds, and weakens the light within to low light. The mist spreads to cover a sixty meter radius centered the user. An additional ten meters of radius may be added for two qi, up to a maximum radius of one hundred and twenty two hundred meters. All single target techniques targeted at the user or an included ally suffer a automatic three dice penalty. The user gains a four die bonus at stealth attempts within the mist. The user may waive the negative effect on up to three five allies, while paying two qi for each additional ally included. This technique persists as long as the user continues to play and up to four turns afterward, regardless of weather conditions.
--Diapason of the Lost Traveler
The mournful sound of the lost traveler is an integral part of the melody, no longer player separately. The user clashes with all enemies within the mist with a bonus of three five dice. On hit the targets perception rolls take a three die penalty, and attempts to leave the mist or move toward the user or an included ally result in the target doubling back unless a 6 success perception test is passed. Enemies within twenty meters of the user or an included ally do not need to make this check. Additionally the target suffers a four die penalty to defense while under this effect. Lasts for as long as the target remains within the mist. Counts as a two die effect for the purpose of dispels.

Dissonance of Night's Terror: ooo
Cost 6
Instant(If used the same turn as Mist of the Vale)
May only be used within Mist of the Vale. The users music grows low and eerie, punctuated by high, sharp notes, while the mists darken with indistinct and predatory shapes. Enemies within the mist suffer from immaterial attacks of phantasmal nightmares every turn. These attacks are DV 4 melee attacks, made with a two die bonus. On hit, targets suffer a three die penalty to their defense dice pools. This penalty stacks up to three times. In addition, on damage targets suffer one additional bleed damage the following turn. This effect activates immediately after the users turn when activated, and immediately before in all proceeding turns.

Starlight Elegy: ooo
Cost 7
The mournful and despairing tune saps the energy of those not insulated from the mist, making their limbs heavy and their thoughts clouded. The user clashes with all enemies in the mist with a bonus of two four dice. On hit, targets suffer a three die penalty on all clashes, and lose three qi per turn spent in the mist. Affected targets must make a four success resolve test or lose their active action the first turn after being affected. This effect persists until a target leaves the mist.
--Despair of the Lost
Alternatively, the power of the Elegy may be focused on a single target, drowning them in the endless mist, leaving them to wander as if alone and far from from home. When used in this manner, the clash receives a three six die bonus. On hit, the target receives the normal effects of the starlight Elegy. In addition, the user makes a stealth test roll. The target and their allies must surpass the users stealth in order to perceive one another, which they may attempt each turn. While under this affect, allies cannot target or affect the victim deliberately, nor may the victim target them, although passive effects still reach them if in range as well as excluding them from the passive bonuses of allies. The victim also suffers a three die penalty to all offensive clashes while under this effect.

Travelers End: oooo
Cost: 8 Qi
In a distant, misty valley, far from the works of mankind, a traveler completed a melody and offered it too the moon, the final notes echoing long after his last breath. This melody is but a shadow of that… but even shadows hold power. Only usable if all other Forgotten Vale Melody techniques are active. Once activated, the mist no longer fades, even if the user ceases playing. In addition, attempts to dispel any Forgotten Vale techniques must dispel Travelers End, first and separately, even if it would otherwise dispel multiple techniques. While Travelers End is active, the qi loss from Elegy is increased by two, and the damage from Dissonance becomes semi perfect.

Oooohhh, this was so sweet! and so painful. Everyone has come so far, grown so much, but now it's the end after everyone's hopes and dreams and fears came true and were dashed and shattered

"Didn't we have this conversation before?" Han Jian asked, sounding a touch tired, crossing his arms over his tiger striped outer robe.

"We did, but I think we're past the point where we can interfere with each other's interests, you know?" Ling Qi shot back. "We aren't close, but I hope we can put some of the tension away at this point."
Aaahh, so sweet and bitter. Rekindling friendship was never going to happen once Ling Qi was firmly cemented as Xiulan's friend instead of Han Jian's, wasn't it?

I understand why and how that happened, and it was necessary to get past Xiulan's blocks, but I'll always be sad we never befriended Han Fang, at least. (And the confirmation that Han Jian won't reach out to Ling Qi in the Inner Sect next year is heartbreaking. Unless Ling Qi manages to get Su Ling to make her own link to him, there's no excuse to let them meet profitably.)

"You are more intelligent than this, Xiulan," LIng Qi replied flatly. "I do not know what it is like to have lightning on the brain," she began, eyeing her friends nigh blinding aura, and it's crackling radiant core. "But I know what the tempting whispers of the dark be like, if you don't keep clear head. Gu Xiulan, this is not you."
Gu Xiulan!!!

So she's rushing head-long into burning out and her only support network is literally someone who models herself after a cultivation hermit. In two years, after Ling Qi has left the Sect, Gu Xiulan's chances of burning herself out seem worryingly close to 100%. She's sacrificed so much of herself -- reread the beginning of the quest, where Gu Xiulan believed in the power of appearances, and now, only because her Mother terrifies her -- and the thought of it turning out to be meaningless in the end---!

The theme I want for Ling Qi's Domain is for all Arts and Domain effects to reinforce Ling Qi's family. In other words, I want Ling Qi's Domain to do absolutely nothing except group enhancements. In this light, the only arts Ling Qi has that I ideally want to slot into her Domain are TRF and maybe Argent Current.

Narratively, I'd like for Ling Qi to aim for having her very presence bolstering her family, and choosing Arts to that effect. Thematically, I'd like for Ling Qi to aim for slotting in defensive Arts, so that in her presence, her family are literally untouchable physically and spiritually. (i.e. Heart art specialty!)

Argent Mirror doesn't do that, except for its last tech.

Well consider how the reroll sub-vote would grow: just as a reroll is better than +4 dice, two rerolls is better than +8 dice.
I mean we have something like 20 dice for perception tests right now.

*scratches chin*

Moon is probably the last meridian, if I had to hazard a guess.
Needed Meridians: Heart(7)
This was the last one.

[X] Internalize Argent Mirror

If we are going to internalize this art then I rather work on themes we already have rather then start working on a Spy mistress theme for CRX and define LQ entirely after that role and have that be her Way.

There is also the possibility that this is a step on either the Spirit or Beast path of a domain (externalisation or internalisation) and I am rather fond of the Spirit path then.

Also this:
The Mirror is clear, revealing all deceptions, including those of the self. Yet this is no matter of virtue or vice, only an understanding of the self. Whether following reason or passion, one must face forward and acknowledge the truth of their choices, without deception.
Is something we will get without having to pick the illusion part. This is the core of the art and what it is about so no it would be silly to go: "This is what the art is about and the lesson you learn... but only if you pick the right option!"

I seriously doubt we're going to have such a wealth of choices that a single, sensible pick will destroy us down the line.

Never dismiss a good, helpful, and well fluffed insight unless you can directly point at a better choice for being patient.

There is the Ling Qi and Allies version of the bonus, though I'm not sure if that's what you want?

It's usually better though to try and get die parity over trying to fish for great rolls though?

And I sincerely doubt that it would grow by giving more rerolls, because that would be silly.
