The only remotely plausible way she could knock us off the Inner Sect would be if we have both her and Han Jian in our bracket. Any other scenarios has her helping us show off in a dramatic, awesome fashion. She'd be our ally, not our opponent.
Even Han Jian and her in the same bracket would not be THAT bad, though dramatic, dramatic deliciousness. Which, huh, increases the odds @yrsillar makes it happen.

Not really. We already know OoC that Han Jian is going to fail the entry to Inner Sect since he doesn't want to abandon his side kick. So there's no real drama there.
As for dramatic ... Ling Qi + Xiulan = KO Han Jian ... and everyone else around too.

Xiulan KO Han Jian is dramatic, both personally and family wise. I also don't think she'd be allowed to ally with us against Han Jian.

More seriously, Han Fang could plausibly have 16 argent meridian, 2 Domain dots, and 4 slotted Domain Arts next year. That's not only 84 dice, but that's also those delicious, delicious domain slot used.domain weapon said:

In an Arena setting with Han Jian and Xiulan, wouldn't the two ally to try and knock us off first before turning to face each other since their families will be watching?
It'd be pretty bad for relations if Xiulan decided to ally with us to beat Han Jian while the Han are watching. In fact, having the excuse of "I was too drained to win against Xiulan" would be the best case scenario for Han Jian.

Like, I don't get the infatuation with Xin and Elder Jiao. Lest we forget, our first meeting with the elder involved him painting a giant target on our back. Our first meeting with Xin involved her giving us a gift on behalf of her sister.
The second thing she gave us was an invitation to a party that, had we failed the rolls, would have set us back weeks in our cultivation. She didnt even warn us.
Even when we were training with them, they spent most of the time fucking with us.

Alright, so let's look at possible tournament groupings. Elders will probably put strongest disciples into their own group and separate the strongest from each other so they don't knock each other out. Strongest disciples are Sun, Bai, Cai, Guangli, Ji Rong, Ling Qi, Kang Zihao, Chu Song, Han Jian, Xiulan, Lu Feng. So, the ones who will probably get their own group would be something like...
Groups
1: Sun
2: Bai
3: Cai
4: Chu Song
5: Ji Rong
6: Guangli
7: ?
8: ?
These are the ones that can't be put into groups with each other, or they'll probably knock each other out or not have a very fun competition. Cai, Bai, and Sun cannot accept help from their lieutenants if they want to show themselves to be monsters and utterly crush the mooks tossed in with them. Well, Guangli can maybe be put into a group with Chu Song without them going for each other, but I wouldn't count on that since they were on opposite sides of the war. Chu Song and Ji Rong can maybe be put together too, but that wouldn't be much of a fun match because it's two greens against everyone else in that group.
So the remainder is Ling Qi, Kang, Lu Feng, Xiulan, Han Jian. Looking at the groupings... It would be unfair to put Ling Qi in a group with an allied or enemy Green, so let's make that

Well, in general, they are the Elder duo that we have spent the most amount of time with, and while Jiao is a cranky old man and Xin has far too many plots going on, we can generally predict their reactions and expectations by now. After all, our most prominent teachers do have a habit of being the result of, or putting us through, mortal danger.
Elder Ying, I think her name was, was only our tutor for a week after we dealt with a threat that could easily have ended our lives and did curse us for quite a while. A threat that she was supposedly in charge of stopping from occurring in the first place.
Zeqing only really became a permanent tutor for us after she sent us into a deadly blizzard that could have killed us.
Xin sent us to a rave that would have put us out of commission for weeks if we had failed.
To say that Jiao and Xin gave us a trial that could have ruined us is not actually a reason not to pursue a tutelage with them, as practically every teacher after our first three months has been in a response to us succeeding in a ruinous activity that they had at least some part in. Furthermore, an Elder Jiao tutelage is apolitical. We won't align ourselves with someone else's goals or desires in order to get that position, and we can work simply on our clan and our personal cultivation rather than dealing with the political backstabbing that goes with Cai or Bai or dealing with being a member of a new Gu family.
There are very potent reasons to go for the Sect and an Elder Jiao apprenticeship rather than aligning ourselves with Cai. That being said, I personally don't think that the vote will swing that way, but I guess we'll see.

Oops, he is? Well, just delete him from consideration then. And okay, assuming there's another Second Year Green besides Chu Song, whom we never heard of, and assuming YR decides to show up... The following grouping is under the assumption the Elders want to let the monsters dominate without help, and prefer Green to make it to top 16 over non-Greens.

Dont forget, pill making NEEDS atleast a decent base cultivation for the basic pills due to the pill furnace (it was stated in a canon omake). And im pretty sure that higher level pills require higher level cultivation as well.
Oh also this goes with medicine too i guess, since we see senior diciple of Suyin still have a pretty strong cultivation.
I doubt that. A former leader of the Imperial Ministry of Integrity is many things, but not apolitical. The Sect itself is aligned with the Empire as well. Becoming his apprentice is likely to slot us into the pro-Imperial Family camp, who the Bai have significant grievances with. That is probably why Meizhen tried to warn us away from continuing in the sect last time we talked about this with her.
Edit: I mean, i don't think it will come up immediately, but in the long run you can't escape politics, and both the Sect and Elder Jiao have a political position we will be expected to align ourselves with.

Uhhh, staying in the sect and being specifically mentored by Elder Jiao is hella political. Even beside the statement that a young green with many prospects choosed to be tutored in the sect, there is still inner sect politics to consider or Elder Jiao previous occupation. The whole cultivate in peace isn't practical given that cultivators grow through conflict, and on a meta-level it would make a boring quest if there would be no curveballs when Ling Qi gets too comfy.
Choosing a path is far more likely to set what direction you want the story to take.

Also sect members are most probably treated as part Empire soldiers since they are what supplies and (probably) trains the cultivators to defend against barbarians.
Think about it, the sect is doing a low key propaganda for the Empire. They are against Empire politics, i guess, bu they are definitely pro empire still. Which isnt bad, but something to keep in mind.

So there is a couple points. First is a break down of what both options give us.
Cai gives us:
Land to start working - This is huge as this means we can start getting a steady amount of money to reinvest in the land creating a positive growth cycle.
Tax exempt status - This is also huge as this gives us more money then any other barony to build our family and land up.
Backing of Cai - This is massive as it is a shield against most rivals that would try and screw us.
What we need to do if we go this route:
Work the land - Cai has stated that the land we would get is on the frontier. That land is rough and needs a lot of work to be worth much
Please or subdue the spirits - links back to the first point in that we can't have the spirits attacking our holding.
Attend Cai - We will need to do any missions that Cai sends us out on. This means that we should start working on certain arts that will help with spying.
Cultivate - this step is going to be on whatever route we go so just throwing this here to compare.
Cai's route gives us a massive material advantage over any other route. However, because of that there is a lot more work that is not cultivation focused. We would need to take the material advantage that the route gives and try and leverage that to off set that lost cultivation time.
Now lets look at the Sect route
What the sect gives us:
Knowledge - The sect is a massive pool of expert tutors and massive libraries that given time will be able to answer any question you have.
Soft ball politics - The politics here are much softer with less to gain or lose from them. Perfect for learning how to talk like Ling Qi is.
What we need to do if we go this route:
Military service - We know that after the second year we will be working in the military. Luckily we should be an officer which has perks.
What ever the sect wants us to do - I don't know when missions start being handed out but we will need to do them.
Cultivate - We will be cultivating.
So the advantage of the sect is the large pool of knowledge and help. However it comes with less material benefits. Therefore we will need to leverage the increase cultivation time and knowledge to build up wealth.
There is also our family to consider. If we work at the sect our family can live in the village at the bottom of the mountain. If we go with Cai they will be living in at the frontier with us at risk to hostile spirits and barbarian raids.
For these reason I prefer the sect. I believe that with the knowledge and help from the sect we should be able to build a fine pool of wealth for our family while also keeping our family safer. While the Cai route does gives us a faster avenue to wealth and prestige the increased work and risk from the politics and frontier life dissuade me from it.

Cai route also has us go in the army, it just would be the provincial army. Sect route also should give us 'Jiao backing', which is considerable.
