I don't know how people missed it. @Questor said that we took a couple of cart loads of dragon bits. We blew them up, parts of their bodies were chunked.
We just gave the rest of the bodies burials.

Far-off in the future, archeologists researching the Battle of Mare-a-thon shall come across a carefully preserved fresco portraying one of the hallmark scenes of the battle.

Huh, we are going to have to push some actions to help the rebuilding efforts now, I think.... ah well, not the first time we have rebuilt a nation from Ashes.... Third time is the Charm right?

Back to prepping for the inevitable Yeti attack I suppose. I'm looking forwards to the Rumor Mill's reactions to what happened in Maretonia,

This seems like a time as good as any for a worldwide tour with the Royal Family. Just coming off of a major military victory (at least for us, we lost barely anyone),new people to introduce ourselves to, and generally a chance to flex a little.

The wife is correct.
Three for three is a good track record.
And in the Spirit of Chaos...
A fourth one will come indeed.
Finally, the war is over.
Peace in our time...for the moment at least.

I AM A TACTICAL GENIUS!!

Anyway, second shortest war we've had so far with, I don't know, maybe the least amount of relative casualties? Good job everyone!

Yes you are. Now that i think about it if those Dragons got away with Loot they would probably came back for more easy gain.

But really, Peglices death was the best part

What should we do to the refugees?

I would let them stay and live in the Empire. Even encouraged them as we don't get great numbers of Magically capable population often.

Name: Garrick Golden-Feather

Age: 56

Titles: Emperor of Gryphus, King of Griffonia, Inheritor of the Imperial House of Gryphus, The Unifier, Great Winged Alpha, The Lightbringer, The Liberator, the King of the North.

Description: Before your wife got her talons on you, you were a fairly typical example of the Griffon species. An unmistakably masculine build, a strong, prominent beak, feathers and fur that seem to be perpetually well-groomed, and a pair of piercing amber eyes hiding a fierce intelligence. Not anymore though. Oh, you still have all those qualities, they're just overshadowed by the massive amount of muscle you've put on since you started your wife's "enhanced training regimen". Your wings can lift dumbbells, and your legs are like tree-trunks supporting a barrel chest rippling with abdominal muscles. In short, you have the build of a person who has been lifting heavy objects his entire life.

-20 Flame Projectors: A product of Archimedes's "liquid fire", these static contraptions can shoot jets of flaming liquid vast distances, burning all in their path.

Knightly Orders (Self Maintained): In the old Empire, Knightly Orders were typically made up of Griffons of noble birth who joined a fraternal militant organization dedicated to martial excellence, honor, and a number of various edicts of moral strength. These great warriors dedicated themselves to the Emperor and the protection of the common Gryph. Tragically, few of these brave souls survived the reign of Discord. But a new breed of Knights now seeks to serve as your sword and shield, and will rally to your banner whenever you may need them.

Politics

Nobility Opinion: 10/10 (All Hail the Glorious Emperor!).

General Public Opinion: 9.5/10 (Hail to the Emperor!).

Protectorate Opinion: 9.5/10 (Hail Golden-Feather the Brave and Glorious!)

Religion

Ancient Imperial Pantheism: Followers of the Polytheistic religion once practiced by the Griffons of the Old Empire, these citizens worship a Pantheon of gods and goddesses emphasizing honor, duty, and order. Though its popularity reached a record low during the reign of Discord, it has never truly died out, and has in fact seen a recent resurgence in several Imperial Cities.
Influence Level: 1.6 (No Benefits)

Disciples of the Crystal Heart: The dominant belief system of the Crystal Ponies with a growing number of Griffon and Diamond Dog adherents, the Disciples of the Crystal Heart believe that the eponymous artifact was crafted by the divine as a gift to mortals, a belief that your own scientific observations have only served to reinforce. While the Disciples were once pacifistic, the rise of Sombra and the revelation of Maretonia's slave culture has led to a reversal of this old policy, and the followers of the Crystal Heart are now as militant as those of any other major religion.
Influence Level: 3.0 (Strengthened Crystal Heart, Minor Runic Literacy)

Neighponese Spiritualism: Also known as Kami-no-Michi, the indigenous religion of Neighpon revolves around the veneration of countless nature spirits which inhabit and embody various facets of the landscape. The Qilin believe that these spirits can have a benevolent or destructive influence upon the material world, and must be appeased with worship and sacrifice. Neighponese spiritualism is unusual in that not only does it lack a specific moral code or organized religious hierarchy, but is considered compatible with other religious beliefs, with many of its adherents also subscribing to another faith.
Influence Level: .4 (No Benefits)

YakYakistani Shamanism: The animist beliefs of the Yaks stress the veneration of nature and ancestor worship. Sharing many similarities with both Imperial Pantheism and Neighponese Spiritualism, Shamans serve as both the leaders of the faith as well as intercessors between the physical and spiritual world. While it has found few adherents amongst Griffons and Diamond Dogs, almost all Yaks subscribe to its beliefs, regardless of their nationality or geographic location.
Influence Level: 1.7 (Small Boost to YakYakistani Relations)

Church of the Lady of the Lakes: The third religion introduced from a foreign people, and the only one to have an organized hierarchy with a foreign head of state serving as the leader of the faith. Worship of the Lady can be traced to the earliest days of the modern Kingdom of Canterbury, where it is claimed that she appeared to the first King of Canterbury, blessing him with the strength to unite the disparate peoples of the realm and fight back against the countless beasts that infested it. To this day, she is venerated across the Kingdom of Canterbury, and even in a select few areas outside it, including communities within your Empire. Recently, it has been revealed to you that the religion is a front for the machinations of the Changeling Queen Phalanx, who has taken upon the guise of a Goddess to rule Canterbury from the shadows.
Influence Level: .5 (No Benefits)

The Imperial Cult: Perhaps the most unusual of the faiths to have taken root in the Empire, the followers of the Imperial Cult embrace the radical belief that the Emperor and the Imperial family are divine beings made flesh, destined to lead the people of the world to greatness. While you personally are a bit uncomfortable with being worshipped as a divine figure, you can't deny it has its benefits.
Influence Level: .3 (No Benefits)

Roll Bonuses
Scatter-Shot: Bonus to Certain Cannon Rolls
Blasting Jelly: +5 to Certain Explosive Rolls
Camouflage 101: +5 to Certain Intrigue/Army Rolls
Specialized Anti-Magic Training: Bonuses to Certain Combat Rolls

Diplomatic Relations

Kingdom of Neighpon: 8.0/10 (Steadfast Ally)
Kingdom of Canterbury: 7.5/10 (Respected Allies)
Libertalia: 6.5 (Business Partners)
YakYakistan: 8.5/10 (Good Neighbors)
Minotaur Republics: 6.0/10 (Trading Partner)
Emerald Isles: 7.0/10 (Dog-Friend)
Kingdom of Equestria: 7/10 (Grateful Friends)

Persons of Interest
Garibaldi Talonuelli: Formerly the Duke of Wingbardy, now the Grand Duke of Wingbardy, Talonuelli is a beloved public figure in his home province and an experienced administrator. After saving his city and people from Brochard's attempted invasion and negotiating his province's vassalage over a few drinks, you'd like to think you can count him among your friends.

Federico Montefeathertro: Duke of the (former) City-State of Urbirdo, and your Father-in Law. He might just be the friendliest of the former Feathersians, having agreed to back you and your kingdom without question or condition during the Brochard Crisis, and hiring a mercenary outfit as a belated wedding gift. You're reasonably certain he likes you, as much as In-Laws can like each other anyway.

Koryū Ryuō: The draconic Emperor of the Island Kingdom of Neighpon. Having agreed to assist you in the war against the Shadow King and making fast friends with your adoptive daughter, you consider him a decent fellow who you can trust to keep his word, and a valuable ally against any destructive forces the world can throw at you.

Minamoto Tadakatsu: Shogun of Neighpon. Born to peasant farmers, he's more than earned his place as the most powerful Samurai amongst the Qilin. After he lead the Neighponese contingent during the Invasion of the Crystal Empire and kindly instructed you in the myriad varieties and intricacies of tea on the campaign trail, you've come to respect the more-than-century-old warrior.

Konrad Hardbeak, "The Kingslayer": Grandmaster of the Knights Lion and Hero of the Empire. Beheaded Brochard the pretender, crippled Sombra the shadow king twice over, and received the very first Imperial Medal of Honor. Despite it all, he is surprisingly humble, insisting in vain that he was, and is, merely doing his duty to the Empire, and to you. He is the very model of an Imperial Knight.

Ivory Rook: Consul of the Crystal Protectorate and head of the Crystal Assembly. One of the first of the Crystal Ponies to be freed from Sombra's mind control, Rook has taken to his position of authority reluctantly, more out of a desire to help his people than any desire for power. Nevertheless, he's proven a charismatic leader and an able administrator, dedicated to doing right by his people, no matter what the cost.

Isabelle Brissette: Relatives of the infamous Brochard dynasty, Isabelle and the Brissette family have been ostracized by the Imperial Nobility, reduced to a shadow of their former influence and prosperity, though by some miracle they still cling to some of their lands. Isabelle herself is a painfully shy little thing, unused to having friends willing to look past her lineage. Gawain hopes to show her that her ancestry does not define her, and that she is more than her uncle's legacy.

Ki Seong: Daughter of the Neighponese ambassador to the Empire of Gryphus, Ki Seong has spent the past several years living in a nation far from the land of her birth, and, much like her father, is committed to being a shining example of Neighpon and conducting herself in an honorable manner at all times. That being said, Gawain suspects she enjoys the opportunity to "let her hair down" amongst others of similarly elevated status, where she will not have to worry as much about what others think of her.

Sebastian Rainfeather: A quiet and somewhat socially awkward young Gryph, Sebastian is an avowed scholar and the heir to the noble house of Rainfeather. Due to his somewhat sheltered upbringing, he, like Gawain, has struggled to make friends, something that Gawain seeks to remedy. For his part, the young Rainfeather is simply glad to have a chess partner his own age who can keep up with him.

Hoofbeard: A former slave turned Pirate Captain, now a respected and influential figure amongst the inhabitants of the island nation of Libertalia. He has agreed to help you and your people, seeing in you a chance to improve Libertalia and stick it to Maretonia's slaveholding class.

King Rutherford: The charismatic Yak responsible for the unification of the numerous Yak clans into a singular, unified Kingdom. From what you've heard, he is exactly what you'd expect a Yak King to be like.

Rose: A Changeling, member of a race of shapeshifting emotivores. Defected to you when your agents nearly stumbled upon the Hive of Queen Phalanx and the conspiracy at the heart of Canterbury and the Church of the Lady of the Lake.

"Lieutenant, sound withdraw, all Divisions."

Your words are carefully chosen. In the Imperial military vernacular, the order to Withdraw is very distinct from the order to Retreat. A withdrawal is a tactical relocation, a momentary disengagement from the enemy to allow soldiers to regroup, rearm and lick their wounds, whereas a retreat is a full blown flight from the battlefield.
The Imperial army never retreats, it just advances in a different direction!

You silently turn to regard Captain Kaboom, the Diamond Dog smiling wide and almost vibrating with excitement as he holds a torch next to a barrel of black powder.

The last one.

The one you'd ordered kept in reserve for this very moment.

You glance to Merlin, the Archmage's horn already lit, a tired but determined expression on his wizened face.

You give both a nod.

"Proceed."

(Magic Drone Strike: 98)
...that must be OH SO SATISFYING!

on a secondary note, this war was actually VERY good for our nation, even discounting whatever reward we can get from it from Maretonia itself.

We got some Ursa remains. We got to try new weapons and tactics. We got experience in using magic in a military setting.

Next project: Everything we did to our enemies, we need to develop countermeasures against. No "Scry and Die" tactics against us, we need anti-teleportation runic arrays. And we'd likely want to integrate them into our city's defenses and military encampents.

Alternatively, we want to develop runic arrays allowing for Teleportation WITHOUT unicorn magic.

We should not need them too soon, as Maretonia is no longer an enemy, and the Changelings are unlikely to go for open war... but we'll want countermeasures of some kinds for those new tactics we developed at some point.

Preferably sooner than later.

There is the fizzle and whoosh of a fuse catching, then a pop and a flash of light.

Through the scrying mirror you get to see Pegicle's eyes widen just before a hundred kilos of black powder goes off in his face.

To your dying day, you will recall the sound of the ragged cheers of House Storm suddenly cutting off into dead silence as their leader's mangled body falls to earth as one of your guiltiest pleasures.
I'm just the tiniest bit disappointed that Hardbeak didn't get another legendary accomplishment, but "bomb in the face" is fine too.

"Tomorrow morning, I and my people shall return to our homeland."

...well, any talk about rewards and/or the future of Maretonia will come through future diplomatic talks, I imagine.

HOPEFULLY the Royal Guards and the Abolitionists can reach a compromise of some kind. One that includes abolition of slavery, obviously, but it should be possible.

Honestly, this is the time for a referendum of some kind.

...and on that note, maybe we should consider a referendum of our own, for the Crystal Protectorate. It's been long enough I think.

I can answer this for you these dragons are/were sentient it'd be like taking skin from a person and teeth and whatnot something you don't do.
I'm pretty sure that if normal people were made of Gold and Platinum that would DEFINITELY be something most would do, and those dragons were explicitly hostile bandits basically.

While it isn't mentioned explicitly, you and some of your troops did take some parts of the dragon bodies, enough to fill a couple of carts full of materials. The majority of the carcasses were buried but with their causes of death being what they were there were plenty of pieces lying around.

You can add that to the barrels full of Ursa blood on the "Loot from Maretonia" list.
As I expected.

If those had been soldiers and not basically bandits maybe we would have sent the bodies back, but in this case...

  1. They're sentient and sapient. It's one thing to butcher monsters for goods, it's another to skin a guy you just shanked to make a cloak
  2. We've got a daughter who is a dragon
  3. Our Allies in Nippon worship dragons, so yeah no.
  4. Anything we could possibly gain from these corpses wouldn't be worth the moral quandary, let alone the headaches.
1. They were also basically bandits and opportunists without morals that attacked a foreign city just because they didn't surrender their wealth immediately.
2. And she's a nice dragon that DIDN'T try to butcher other people without a reason
3. They worship HEAVENLY dragons, another kind of dragon with magic and power over the weather. I imagine it's basically the "unicorn" dragon as compared to an "Earth Pony" Dragon.
4. I disagree. there's no moral quandary in looting dead bandits, and there's no headache coming from it because there's nobody that has any interest in giving us problems for it.

You mean desecrate the bodies of sentient beings and ware their bodies as armor? Or weapons? That's just wrong and WILL piss people off not to mention the literal Dragon Kingdoms .
if they were official dragons soldiers, sure.

Those were basically opportunists who acted on their own. Nobody will care.

...though I'd avoid ever meeting dragon ambassadors (if they even know the concept) while clothed in dragon leather or similar.

You know, it's just poor taste (though I wouldn't be surprised if they actually did NOT see it as an insult and instead saw it as a reasonable attempt at impressing them. It's hard to tell with "might is right" dragons).

We allready do have a countermeasure tho the Anti magic metal although we don't have enough of it it does no sell this strategy
In canon Starswhirl somehow used what seems to be Orichalcum to create an anti-teleportation ward, so who knows... we might get a project to do that in the future.

He just used a few fragments from the Changeling Obsidian Throne to protect the castle.

So should we put the idea of sending an expedition south on hold? We know it's the Dragonlands, and sending anyone there to explore feels like a death sentence. Though with some good luck maybe we can find some allies..?
It can probably wait a bit. First let's stabilize our own situation with Maretonia, Equestria and the Changelings. Also Crystal Referendum if we can.

Yep, that is indeed impossible as far as I aware of. The Dice Gods do favor Gryphons a lot didn't they?

Anyways, the campaign is finally over and I am surprised we didn't get any recompensation for our efforts. Though looking at Maretonia now, they really need everything they can get their hooves on and asking for rewards now will literally be kicking an *almost* dead horse. Hope our citizens will be fine for us not getting anything.
we got to try new tactics, experience with magic in military conflict, ursa and dragon loot, and (hopefully) good will with the royal guards (the Abolistionist were already on our side anyway).

Unless the Royal Guards literally betray the Abolitionists, we're likely to have friends in their future government, so we can probably count on valuable future trade deals and tech/magic exchanges. Also a buffer against the Dragons to the south.

Using Orichalcum or even black steel to protect our cities and other infrastructure would be insanely expensive and not worth while I'm sure with runes and other such Magics wards could be created and we can save the Metals for meeting rooms and vaults if we absolutely need to be sure. The metals are just to expensive and rare to use in such vast projects
good runic arrays would likely be a better option for most places, but Orichalcum would be the best option for, at the very least, the Royal Palace.

After all if we actually started a REAL conflict with the changelings there's few worse threats than a teleporting changeling assassin.

@Questor I'm not going to complain that we are apparently not getting any territory from this, but I'm wondering if you could've hinted at that we IC would just want this mess to end, to prevent the arguments in-thread?
There's still a chance of more coming in future diplomatic talks, I wouldn't call it over yet.

By the way, can someone remind me what species Koryū is? Because if he's just a normal dragon then the discovery of an entire nation of them might cause problems
Heavenly dragon, a kind of dragon with, apparently, some kind of innate magic related to the weather. They might or might not have created the QIlin.

Also while Discord cursed the normal dragons with "greed" (the greed growth from canon"), he apparently cursed THOSE dragons with "sleep" (they basically only awakens for a few minutes at a time, and Koryu is the only uncursed dragon we know of (though I wonder if our daughter is maybe also uncursed...)

Wait a second… we can annex Libertalia!
maybe, maybe not. They're probably very happy with their current situation anyway... though they might see "getting the official protection of the imperial army against dragons and/or future Maretonian power" as worth losing their independence...

Orichalcum is anti magic no doubt about it, but its protection only extends to those who wears it. Its not gonna stop a teleportation say, 2 feet above a floor of orichalcum. (which sounds very expensive and not at all worth it.)

No, what we need isnt orichalcum floors or walls. What we need are wards, something to create interference and enchanted to prevent scrying or divination so magic users cant see where they are aiming. So Runes, to make wards, enchantments to program what they need to target a specific branch of magic. Which sounds way more cheaper thing to research and develop then making a room made out of orichalcum.
Canon had some kind of "Orichalcum wards" (if we accept the changeling throne being made of orichalcum in season 7-8).

I'm sure there's way to use Orichalcum we just haven't discovered yet.

If I recall correctly, he's a heavenly dragon while our daughter is an earthly dragon, AKA eastern and western.
yep. I basically think of them as "unicorn" vs "Earth Pony" dragons. One kind has magic, the other has more "traditional" strenght.

Also different curses from Discord, "Sleep" vs "Greed".

We have enough land as it is though!
enough... land?

...

does not compute.

Platoons of soldiers suddenly find barrels of explosives materializing in the middle of their tightly packed formations moments before detonating, shrapnel and splinters tearing through them and killing scores in seconds. With no unicorns of their own among them there's nothing they can do to stop the rain of magically-delivered bombs appearing in their midst.

The dragons are not spared either, explosions bracketing their massive forms, holes blasted into their flanks, their armor pierced and sundered by the explosions ripping through Mare-a-Thon as the barrel-bombs are teleported next to or underneath them. One unfortunate drake actually has a bomb teleported into his mouth as he opens it to breath fire, his head vanishing in a flash of light and a spray of gore, leaving behind only a mangled stump before the mages hastily close the scrying mirror.
We just demonstrated how incredibly useful mages are in conjunction with Gryphonian technology. I doubt that other countries will ignore that. We should get that immigration action done soon so that we have more mages to work with, both in the military and civilian sector.

So should we put the idea of sending an expedition south on hold? We know it's the Dragonlands, and sending anyone there to explore feels like a death sentence. Though with some good luck maybe we can find some allies..?

Only until we can send an expedition of force, because thats the only thing dragons respect. The only question is if we can put one together before more raids come, because until they learn that they cannot bully us they will keep trying.

Pretty sure at this point we are going to need some form of heavy rifle that can be used while flying to pull that off consistently. Because the biggest issue with dragons is their flame breath and that getting into melee is a bad idea.

The battle was fantastic. But I won't lie, I hS hoped the dragons would have wiped the floor with House Storm, but even they deserved a last hooray, or something like that I guess.

The war is now. Now winning the peace always always been more difficult, especially in a time as war ravaged as Maretonia.

Still, we finally free to do so much more now and focus on other thearts.

@Questor I'm not going to complain that we are apparently not getting any territory from this, but I'm wondering if you could've hinted at that we IC would just want this mess to end, to prevent the arguments in-thread?

So @Questor does this mean a Maretonian protectorate was never an option?

If so I kinda wish that had been stated just to stop the conversations about it and so that people didn't get their hopes up

There goes our conquest of the eastern coast

The possibility of a Maretonian protectorate or even possible annexation still exists, and will be addressed in the coming posts.

The political situation in Maretonia needs a little bit of time to stabilize before the Empire can begin discussing that sort of thing with the Abolitionists, Royal Guard, and what's left of House White Star under Countess Copper Top, and Garrick isn't the sort of person to bring up the idea of a protectorate in the immediate aftermath of killing Pegicles with his army still inside Maretonia's borders.

By the way, can someone remind me what species Koryū is? Because if he's just a normal dragon then the discovery of an entire nation of them might cause problems

On a brighter note, even if we're not conquering anything, as much as that pains me, hopefully all the loot we're bringing home will go a decent way to recouping our losses from last turn, especially with us probably not having to do anything to restore morale or make up losses

Wait a second… we can annex Libertalia!

Koryu is a Celestial Dragon, a species that is very much distinct from the more common dragons which inhabit the lands South of Libertalia. Comparing a Celestial Dragon to a normal dragon is like comparing an Alicorn to a normal Pony.

@Questor , so your not against harvesting materila from sentient creatures? or better yet is it taboo to do so?

The situation with the dragons is a bit of a grey area. It's not like you skinned and gutted them and completely disassembled their bodies, you buried the majority of them and took the excess pieces that were scattered throughout the battlefield. And due to the size and number of them killed, you have more than enough such pieces to satisfy any demands for raw materials you might have wanted.

Also, while Garrick doesn't know it yet, Dragons have a very pragmatic view of death and the treatment of corpses, so they're not likely to be particularly offended by what you've done in the way other races would be.

It's actually not uncommon for some dragons to eat their own dead.

Mind you, they'd still object to seeing you do something provocative like wearing the skin of their kin as clothing. Just because they don't care about their dead being desecrated doesn't mean they like the idea of being used as ingredients.

Actually, can we talk a bit about the Changelings? What are we planning on doing about them? Because in principle, I'd be all in for integrating them in our kingdom. We have really good inter-species relations, and the power of propaganda in our side! (And also, secret agent changelings...)

The biggest problem I see is Queen Chrysalis, really. Last i saw of her in cannon was when she rejected to give love back and join the new Changelings (which... the old design was so much cooler). Then again, they haven't been thrown out form their homes yet.

(Intrigue action to off Chrisalis and put Rose in power? Only me? Okay...)
