Now, was Discord escaping a thousand years of the magic wearing off and then an argument in front of them, or is the world just fucked if someone gets cranky in front of him even now?

Huh, if he escaped because of the magic wearing off could we ask that the princesses reapply it every now and then? Even if we don't know it would wear off I think Griffon would rather be on the safe side and get it reapplied. While it would be a good opportunity in the sense that we can pick up the pieces and control the world that way I don't think we want to rule a kingdom of ashes.

I can see Sir Granite coming to ask the Princesses, with Imperial permission, to ask about Diamond Dog settlements they know about. I can see him wanting to re-unite the pack or at the least establish connections.

..ok, I still have to read the fallout omake (I skimmed it though. I just don't like Fallout or Fallout Equestria that much), but let's skip to the actual update for now!

I want to learn more about the present Alicorn sisters, and quest Equestria!

It was not until the Crown Prince began to describe the integration of the Diamond Dog packs into the Empire that the Alicorn Sisters began to show any manner of surprise

"Thine count Gem Hounds...amongst thine subjects?"
yeah, that would likely be a bit surprising from their PoV.

"Forgive our surprise but...the canines that our little Ponies have encountered have been invariably hostile, either attacking or fleeing whenever they are spotted."

Gawain's heart sank.

"Do these Diamond Dogs behave in an almost feral manner? Attacking with claws and teeth, showing no sign of tool use?"

Celestia nodded hesitantly. Gawain sighed, eyes briefly closed in mourning.

"It would seem that the Dogs in your lands are afflicted with the mind-killing sickness."
ah... that explains it.

Gawain then went on to describe the other, less hostile nations that the Empire had encountered.

His descriptions of Neighpon and it's draconic Emperor, Canterbury and it's Queen, the Emerald Isles and their Canine inhabitants, the Caribou of Olenia, the Minotaurs, and the pirates-turned-profiteers of Libertalia elicited a great deal of interest and surprise from his equine hosts. Gawain resolved to offer an exchange of maps once the story of his people had reached its end. He could only imagine how the Princesses felt. To be given knowledge of so many other nations at once, some of which were inhabited by fellow Ponies…well, he could hardly fault them for the occasional looks of disbelief, though they never expressed doubt of his word.
..yeah, considering that they're going from "we only knew of the yaks" to "the world is a lot bigger and varied than we thought!"... their surprise is completely understandable, yeah.

He hesitated before sharing the most recent bit of history regarding Maretonia...history that was likely being made as they spoke.

"After the...destruction of Roam, my father deemed it necessary to intercede in the conflict. He marches on Maretonia as we speak."

Neither of the Princesses seemed to have any emotional reaction to that. He wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. Celestia simply nodded silently, still processing the thought of so many Ponies dying due to the whims of a few power-hungry nobles. Luna seemed more interested in Gawain's words, however.

"Thine Emperor...he believes that he may resolve this...catastrophe that hath fallen upon our fellow Ponies?"

Gawain responded in the affirmative. Luna stared back at him, and the Crown Prince couldn't help but feel as if he was being assessed. Finally, the Lunar Princess nodded, apparently satisfied.

"I wish him luck in his attempts to restore the peace."

That was better than Gawain had expected.
As good as we could hope. They'll likely want to verify how we'll treat the Maretonians after the war is over, but abolishing slavery and being decent to the civilians will likely be enough to gain their acceptance.

It would take quite a lot for them to actually become hostile to us, after all.

"Neigh, 'tis not a matter of birth that decides our titles, but equality. To call one of us a Queen would be to lessen the importance of the other. We rule together, and so we both share the title of Princess."

Had Gawain blinked, he would have missed the sudden glance the dark-coated mare gave her sister, her lips twitching downwards into a look of uncertainty. But it was gone as quickly as it had come, the diplomatic smile plastered back onto her face in an instant.
..yeah, there is SOME level of doubt in Luna.

Well, I imagine she'll get along with our country and ambassadors pretty well, and part of her "fall to darkness" was her isolation and being ignored.

If she gets something important to do, and is RECOGNIZED for it, we should be able to prevent Nightmare Moon.

also, gas lamps = more night life... though she might be a bit annoyed at light pollution dimming the stars' light...

"How did you do it? Force him to stare into the eyes of a cockatrice? I had heard tales of some attempting..."
...you know, that's not a bad idea.

I doubt it would work, but still!

"As to keeping him in our garden...a garden where nature is kept in order, where green and growing things are constantly cultivated and kept in order..."

She smiled.

"I dare say that this is a better prison for a being such as him than any dungeon."
...that's actually an interesting idea. It might very well work to weaken him

It was not until after the Imperial delegation had departed that Princess Luna turned to Snowdrop, her diplomatic smile fading as she regarded the arctic-maned Earth Pony.

"Now, Lady Snow...what is thine true opinion of this Empire?"

The Artic-maned Earth Pony blinked in confusion.

"I-I'm sorry your highness, but I'm not quite sure what you mean?"
fair question from Luna. I wonder if she'll be surprised by Snowdrop confirming everything we said.

"But even if it weren't for those positive qualities...I would still advise you to go to any lengths to ensure they view us favorably."

Celestia's smile faded, even as Luna's eyes narrowed, focusing intently upon her subject.

"Go on."

The Earth Pony complied, her tone dead serious.

"Princesses, Gryphus is strong. And they have the potential to become even stronger."
the best of friends, and the worst of enemies, that's us!

"And what of their strength of arms? The Knights that accompanied Prince Goldenfeather seemed to be of strong mind and body, but twould hardly be fair to compare them to our own Royal Guard."

Snowdrop surprised the Princesses, and herself, by chuckling.

"While I'm in no position to judge the comparative strength and quality of the Empire's Knights, they are only a fraction of Gryphus' military strength."

Both of them blinked at that, even as the Earth Pony Mare continued.

"They possess not only several knightly orders comparable in size, equipment and training to our own Royal Guard, but a permanent standing army of professional soldiers that numbers in the tens of thousands."

Both of the Princesses physically reeled back in shock at that proclamation. Luna stammered.
mh.. yeah, I suppose our knights would likely be comparable to the royal guards in quality. No idea about HOW MANY royal guards they have, though.

And I suppose the concept of a standing army would sound foreign and possibly alarming to the ponies. Generally speaking professional armies are expensive.

"But outside the building, on the land surrounding the memorial, there were dozens of walls of polished stone, blocks of granite that stretched on for as far as I could see. I asked one of the Griffons what they were there for."

"'The future', he told me. 'For the wars to come.'"

Snowdrop stared up the Alicorn Sisters, an unreadable look in her eyes.

"Princesses, there was room for over a million names."

someone might call us paranoid. I prefer the term "prepared".

"The Griffons see the world as a dangerous place. I think they believe that the only way to ensure peace is to be prepared for war, to face the threats the world holds head on."

"I do not think it would be wise to make them see us as one of those threats."
While all the intel about our military mindset might be worrying, I trust Celestia and Luna to be reasonable.

Time and again, we have been proved RIGHT about our fears, and the need of a standing army.

Sombra. Maretonia. the Caribou attacking Emerald Isle and the pirates attacking our merchants. The monsters that until a few years ago plagued our land.

And, unknown to the Royal Sisters, the changelings.

Having our army and our mindset makes us important to keep an eye on... but we've also proved ourselves good people in general. As long as they don't see us using our powers for evil purposes (and they'll probably start by checking our treatment of Maretonia once the war is over), it's in their interest to be our allies and friends, and try to influence us through diplomacy rather than showing themselves as hostile.

To the Ponies of Equestria, the world is naturally peaceful and harmonious. If something or somewhere in the world is not in a state of peace and harmony, it is a result of outside tampering or some manner of corruptive influence. Discord is so horrifying to them (essentially an Eldritch abomination in the purest sense of the term) because in their eyes he was a violation of nature, an aberration that turned the world into a dangerous and chaotic place.

To get an idea of what this looks like in practice, one only need watch the very first episode of the show. The Mane Six describe the Everfree Forest, a place where the weather can't be controlled, plants grow on their own, and the animals take care of themselves, as unnatural.

oh the irony!

We'd definitely pay good money for teams of weather pegasi to manage the weather in at least PARTS of our kingdoms. Stopping big storms and hurricanes before they start, ensuring rains for good harvests and sunny days for at least the big holidays...

Yet almost paradoxically, they possess a great respect and veneration for nature, albeit in what appears to be a very simplistic manner (trees good, polluting industry bad). When Twilight was traveling through time and witnessing all of the horrible futures that would have befallen Equestria had the Mane Six never met, one of them was one where the Flim Flam brothers had (apparently, we only got an eight second look at this particular future) constructed an economic empire. Twilight (and we, the viewers) witness heavy machinery being used to uproot and cut down whole forests, while in the distance, the smokestacks of factories fill the air with smog.

Consider that this timeline is shown alongside ones where Chrysalis and Nightmare Moon conquer Equestria. Implying that, in the eyes of Twilight, an Equestrian, that such an industrialized future is comparable to ones where her people are ruled over by tyrants.
well, if the WHOLE of Equestria reached that point, I'd kinda agree with them... especially because we have ZERO reasons to trust that such industrialization made Equestrian's life better.

We all know not to trust the Flim-Flam Brothers after all.

The Griffons, by contrast, would look upon such an industrialized world with approval. This is because they see the world as dangerous and chaotic by default. Discord was not an aberration, he simply turned the unforgiving hostility of nature up to 11. To the Griffons of the Empire, the natural world is a thing to be combated, the cultural result of their homeland being filled with vicious predators that preyed upon them for countless generations. If something is peaceful or harmonious, it is only so because sentient beings made it that way through deliberate effort.

A bunch of Griffons leveling a forest to make way for a new rail line are not simply laborers working to earn their pay, or even industrious workers engaged in a beneficial act of construction, but soldiers in a war against a hostile, uncaring universe, destroying a potential haven for the monsters that used to prey upon them and their children.

again, this is very ironic because in their own way the ponies are fighting nature just as much as us.

I mean, how can complete control of weather and seasons AND SUN AND MOON not be seen as a way to control nature, to make it harmonious?

It's just that they use magic for that, and we (mostly) use technology.

Then again, it's all in the mindset I suppose.

Now, this is not to say that Griffons are a bunch of Captain Planet villains who will dump toxic waste into the ocean or choke the skies with smoke to "stick it to Mother Nature." In fact, the Empire has numerous laws that regulate how industries conduct themselves, from fishing quotas to a ban on the dumping of industrial byproducts into the nation's rivers. However, these laws only exist for the sake of the Griffons themselves. The fishing quotas are there to ensure they do not deplete their food supply, and they do not wish to drink from rivers tainted by toxic chemicals, or fly through skies choked by smoke. If there existed an action that would severely harm nature, but would be exclusively beneficial to sapient beings, Griffons would not only perform it, but feel a moral obligation to do so.

If it were announced that Manticores had gone extinct, Ponies would mourn the loss of an entire species, the death of a piece of the natural world that they could never get back. If any Griffons would be saddened, it would only be because they couldn't hunt the things anymore.
mh.. interesting comparison.

I'd expect ponies to have conflicting feelings about what are predators though.

In the end, both viewpoints have some flaws, but I kinda hope that in time our cultures might slowly influence each other, and better themselves though that.

And while neither Griffons nor Equestrians see war as something to be glorified or celebrated, with many Ponies seeing it as a last resort that should only be considered once all other options have been exhausted, only the Griffons see armed conflict as both inevitable and ultimately unavoidable. And despite, or perhaps because of so many Imperial families having lost loved ones to the fires of war, there does exist a certain romanticization of war and combat in Imperial Culture. Those who serve, be they knights, sailors or common soldiers, are adored and seen as heroes by the civilian population, and even the idea of dying in battle is looked upon with a certain degree of fondness. If the best way to die is of old age surrounded by loved ones, then the second best way is on the field of battle surrounded by your brothers and sisters in arms, giving your life for the nation and those you fight to protect, be they your family, your comrades or the Emperor.
Honestly I'm just happy it's the SECOND best way. I find it reasonable all things considered.

And really, history proves the Griffons RIGHT that war is unavoidable (or at least VERY VERY LIKELY), and one should be prepared for it.

We don't have a Deus ex Harmony to fall on, after all.

By contrast, the Equestrians, who have not experienced an equivalent war, sudden economic boom or rapid industrialization since the end of the Discordian Era, are still very much an agrarian, feudal society divided along class lines, with fewer opportunities for social mobility.

I wonder what the princesses will think of this specific bit. Luna certainly showed a lot of disgust for her nobles...
These are just some of the differences between the Empire and Equestria that are likely to result in confusion and culture clash at some point in the future.

yeah, Equestria will likely require quite a few diplomatic actions to have everything go right. It should be worth it though, and both races could stand to learn something from each other.

The funny thing ponies are fundimentally wrong about nature ponies can sometimes be stagnation personified and it could be simply that there medling just completely fucks up the natural cycle and magic stops anything from happening

And the problems between the sisters are starting to surface, with Luna seeming to be uncertain of the words here.

The encounter roll for Equestria was an interesting thing. Had the roll been a little bit lower, or had you encountered them a few decades later, you would have arrived just in time to bear witness to this:

If Nightmare Moon rears her head and targets us even accidentally, well then...our Space Program is going to get a massive shot in the arm.

Gawain: "You guys are back early."

Griffon Cosmonaut: "Moon's Haunted."

Gawain: "What?"

Griffon Cosmonaut: Grabbing an Orichalcum Sword and getting back on the rocket. "Moon's haunted."

@Questor got a question for you our protectorate will there be a referendum on if they want to become there own nation at some point or fully integrate with our Empire?

The possibility of a referendum to fully join or leave the Empire does exist, but such a thing lies firmly in the court of the Crystal Ponies themselves. It will likely be some time yet before they consider fully committing.

A million heroes...
A million defenders of the Empire.

"Victory cannot be achieved without sacrifice. Our people know this truth better than any other."

How exactly do they expect to control their borders with so few troops? Or to even defend against attacks from multiple sides?
Unless these are Meme Ponies with Reasonable Calcs, they can't by any other metric be enough.

I've actually been wanting to touch on this subject for a while.

Gryphus is currently one of the only nations in the setting with a professional standing army, and certainly possesses the largest of such forces.

Most civilizations you will encounter at this point in time are similar to Equestria, in that their military is made up of a small core of professional warriors (knights, royal guards, samurai, a warrior caste, etc.), which are supplemented by conscripts, militia, mercenaries and peasant levies.

The reasons for this are twofold: firstly, financial. The costs of maintaining a permanent force of professional soldiers is ruinous, especially to an agrarian, feudal society. And paying this cost becomes difficult to justify when you are not facing an enemy. Gryphus sidesteps the issue by virtue of being, if not the largest economy on the planet, certainly one of the most powerful and dynamic. Put very simply, the reason Gryphus has such a large military while others don't is that they are one of the only nations that can afford to have such a force.

Secondly, there are political barriers and consequences to having such a large number of armed people whose entire job is fighting the enemies of the realm. If the force answers solely to the Emperor, Princesses, or head of state, then the nobles below them may get nervous about what might happen if that amount of force is directed inside the nation's borders.

And if the force is decentralized, with say, each Noble house controlling a portion of the army, then you have new problems. Not just the practical question of how you will quickly assemble and coordinate this patchwork force in a time of war, or how you will sort out the chain of command, but the issue of ambitious Noble commanders getting the idea to use their personal armies against each other or the head of state.

And in both such situations, one has to worry about a bunch of bored soldiers getting it into their heads that if they have all the weapons and firepower, maybe they should be the ones in charge?

In such cases, having such a large army actually invites instability.

Gryphus is different. The Winter War, a war for the very survival of the nation against a foreign threat, allowed Garrick to achieve a level of centralization of authority that would never have been possible in peacetime. The outlook of the Griffons is also a factor. As Snowdrop said, Griffons do not ask if they will need such an army, but when. They do not just think, but know, on a deep instinctual level, that there will always be another foe, another threat, another war to be fought. And they need to be prepared for when that threat rears it's head.

I mean when you get proven right time and time again the old scraggly griffon standing on the corner with a sign saying "The End is Nigh" isn't a madman so much as a very enthusiastic weatherman.

So....we are Final Fantasy recurring Big Bad Empire?

is that a Luna turning Nightmare, or a Nightmare trapped in a ritual circle with Celestia hoping there's an "inner Luna" fighting an external corruption?
The possibility of a referendum to fully join or leave the Empire does exist, but such a thing lies firmly in the court of the Crystal Ponies themselves. It will likely be some time yet before they consider fully committing.
ah, so we have to wait.

Or, possibly, use an intrigue option to subtly nudge them to start a "fully join" movement.

Not a priority anyway. We'll consider it after Maretonia.

The reasons for this are twofold: firstly, financial. The costs of maintaining a permanent force of professional soldiers is ruinous, especially to an agrarian, feudal society. And paying this cost becomes difficult to justify when you are not facing an enemy. wait, we're not the largest economy on the planet?

I can't imagine anyone else surpassing us, really!

But yeah, we're basically so wealthy that we CAN afford our army. Really, we could afford a much bigger one, though we don't truly need it yet.

The fact that we've had plenty of uses for our armies also helps.

Secondly, there are political barriers and consequences to having such a large number of armed people whose entire job is fighting the enemies of the realm. If the force answers solely to the Emperor, Princesses, or head of state, then the nobles below them may get nervous about what might happen if that amount of force is directed inside the nation's borders.
which is why having a LOT of noble/commoner approval is paramount.

Luckily for us...

Hmmm pony magic can be a threat to the enviroment there meddling would basically make the land completely useless to non-ponies if a pony stops controlling land then the weather will become endless beating sunlight baking the ground, grass simply not growing over those few inches like a carpet that then dies, possibly no crops growing due to pony magic being responsible for it could the soil be depleted where they grow food? but works due to earth pony magic could be why there are most only earth pony farmers?

Loved this update and info dump, I fully back and agree with the Griffon mindset, If you want peace then prepare for war.

Of course you do realize that now we must double the army size, you know, too future proof it... just in case...

Also lets have our diplomats drag Luna away and show her a good time, if the ponies won't appreciate her then the Empire will, may as well let her relax on Libertalia and get pampered by some pool boys too.

- Garrick has a portrait. Very nice.
-- I am prejudiced against spoilers.
Name: Garrick Golden-Feather

Age: 56

Titles: Emperor of Gryphus, King of Griffonia, Inheritor of the Imperial House of Gryphus, The Unifier, Great Winged Alpha, The Lightbringer, The Liberator, the King of the North.

Description: Before your wife got her talons on you, you were a fairly typical example of the Griffon species. An unmistakably masculine build, a strong, prominent beak, feathers and fur that seem to be perpetually well-groomed, and a pair of piercing amber eyes hiding a fierce intelligence. Not anymore though. Oh, you still have all those qualities, they're just overshadowed by the massive amount of muscle you've put on since you started your wife's "enhanced training regimen". Your wings can lift dumbbells, and your legs are like tree-trunks supporting a barrel chest rippling with abdominal muscles. In short, you have the build of a person who has been lifting heavy objects his entire life.

Military

Imperial Army
: Professional soldiers, paid and supplied by you. 500 soldier battalions cost 100 gold each to raise or replace. Additionally, Imperial Army soldiers have an upkeep cost of 100 gold per every ten thousand soldiers.

Imperial Army Morale: 80/100 (Strong)

Imperial Army Numbers: 53,848

-25,000 Warriors: Armed with a sword or hand-axe and shield, these Griffons make up the bulk of your army.

-12,500 Polearms: For keeping your enemy at arms length or taking down opponents larger than a Griffon.

-12,500 Arbalists: Griffons armed with crossbows, capable of punching through armor from quite a distance away.

-3000 Diamond Dogs: Armed with a variety of swords, maces, war axes, and other weapons suitable for close-quarters, Diamond Dogs are masters of subterranean combat, and are well suited to ambush tactics.

-856 Artillerists: Responsible for the transport, maintenance and operation of heavy weaponry, these Gryphons and Dogs are highly trained in their chosen field of ranged combat.

-28 Mobile Ballistae: Massively oversized mechanical bows that fire bolts big enough to pierce through tree trunks from vast distances.

-59 Cannons: Firing iron balls through the power of explosive black powder, these metal siege engines are one of the most powerful weapons in your arsenal.

-20 Flame Projectors: A product of Archimedes's "liquid fire", these static contraptions can shoot jets of flaming liquid vast distances, burning all in their path.

Knightly Orders (Self Maintained): In the old Empire, Knightly Orders were typically made up of Griffons of noble birth who joined a fraternal militant organization dedicated to martial excellence, honor, and a number of various edicts of moral strength. These great warriors dedicated themselves to the Emperor and the protection of the common Gryph. Tragically, few of these brave souls survived the reign of Discord. But a new breed of Knights now seeks to serve as your sword and shield, and will rally to your banner whenever you may need them.

Politics

Nobility Opinion: 10/10 (All Hail the Glorious Emperor!).

General Public Opinion: 9.5/10 (Hail to the Emperor!).

Protectorate Opinion: 9.5/10 (Hail Golden-Feather the Brave and Glorious!)

Religion

Ancient Imperial Pantheism: Followers of the Polytheistic religion once practiced by the Griffons of the Old Empire, these citizens worship a Pantheon of gods and goddesses emphasizing honor, duty, and order. Though its popularity reached a record low during the reign of Discord, it has never truly died out, and has in fact seen a recent resurgence in several Imperial Cities.
Influence Level: 1.6 (No Benefits)

Disciples of the Crystal Heart: The dominant belief system of the Crystal Ponies with a growing number of Griffon and Diamond Dog adherents, the Disciples of the Crystal Heart believe that the eponymous artifact was crafted by the divine as a gift to mortals, a belief that your own scientific observations have only served to reinforce. While the Disciples were once pacifistic, the rise of Sombra and the revelation of Maretonia's slave culture has led to a reversal of this old policy, and the followers of the Crystal Heart are now as militant as those of any other major religion.
Influence Level: 3.0 (Strengthened Crystal Heart, Minor Runic Literacy)

Neighponese Spiritualism: Also known as Kami-no-Michi, the indigenous religion of Neighpon revolves around the veneration of countless nature spirits which inhabit and embody various facets of the landscape. The Qilin believe that these spirits can have a benevolent or destructive influence upon the material world, and must be appeased with worship and sacrifice. Neighponese spiritualism is unusual in that not only does it lack a specific moral code or organized religious hierarchy, but is considered compatible with other religious beliefs, with many of its adherents also subscribing to another faith.
Influence Level: .4 (No Benefits)

YakYakistani Shamanism: The animist beliefs of the Yaks stress the veneration of nature and ancestor worship. Sharing many similarities with both Imperial Pantheism and Neighponese Spiritualism, Shamans serve as both the leaders of the faith as well as intercessors between the physical and spiritual world. While it has found few adherents amongst Griffons and Diamond Dogs, almost all Yaks subscribe to its beliefs, regardless of their nationality or geographic location.
Influence Level: 1.7 (Small Boost to YakYakistani Relations)

Church of the Lady of the Lakes: The third religion introduced from a foreign people, and the only one to have an organized hierarchy with a foreign head of state serving as the leader of the faith. Worship of the Lady can be traced to the earliest days of the modern Kingdom of Canterbury, where it is claimed that she appeared to the first King of Canterbury, blessing him with the strength to unite the disparate peoples of the realm and fight back against the countless beasts that infested it. To this day, she is venerated across the Kingdom of Canterbury, and even in a select few areas outside it, including communities within your Empire. Recently, it has been revealed to you that the religion is a front for the machinations of the Changeling Queen Phalanx, who has taken upon the guise of a Goddess to rule Canterbury from the shadows.
Influence Level: .5 (No Benefits)

The Imperial Cult: Perhaps the most unusual of the faiths to have taken root in the Empire, the followers of the Imperial Cult embrace the radical belief that the Emperor and the Imperial family are divine beings made flesh, destined to lead the people of the world to greatness. While you personally are a bit uncomfortable with being worshipped as a divine figure, you can't deny it has its benefits.
Influence Level: .3 (No Benefits)

Informational: Diplomatic Relations/Persons of Interest (last edited by QM on Friday, May 21, 2021)

--- "Look at the Sky Sisters and weep in awe" = Kingdom of Equestria diplomatic relations has been added
Diplomatic Relations

Kingdom of Neighpon: 8.0/10 (Steadfast Ally)
Kingdom of Canterbury: 7.5/10 (Respected Allies)
Libertalia: 6.5 (Business Partners)
YakYakistan: 8.5/10 (Good Neighbors)
Minotaur Republics: 6.0/10 (Trading Partner)
Emerald Isles: 7.0/10 (Dog-Friend)
Kingdom of Equestria: 7/10 (Grateful Friends)

Persons of Interest
Garibaldi Talonuelli: Formerly the Duke of Wingbardy, now the Grand Duke of Wingbardy, Talonuelli is a beloved public figure in his home province and an experienced administrator. After saving his city and people from Brochard's attempted invasion and negotiating his province's vassalage over a few drinks, you'd like to think you can count him among your friends.

Federico Montefeathertro: Duke of the (former) City-State of Urbirdo, and your Father-in Law. He might just be the friendliest of the former Feathersians, having agreed to back you and your kingdom without question or condition during the Brochard Crisis, and hiring a mercenary outfit as a belated wedding gift. You're reasonably certain he likes you, as much as In-Laws can like each other anyway.

Koryū Ryuō: The draconic Emperor of the Island Kingdom of Neighpon. Having agreed to assist you in the war against the Shadow King and making fast friends with your adoptive daughter, you consider him a decent fellow who you can trust to keep his word, and a valuable ally against any destructive forces the world can throw at you.

Minamoto Tadakatsu: Shogun of Neighpon. Born to peasant farmers, he's more than earned his place as the most powerful Samurai amongst the Qilin. After he lead the Neighponese contingent during the Invasion of the Crystal Empire and kindly instructed you in the myriad varieties and intricacies of tea on the campaign trail, you've come to respect the more-than-century-old warrior.

Konrad Hardbeak, "The Kingslayer": Grandmaster of the Knights Lion and Hero of the Empire. Beheaded Brochard the pretender, crippled Sombra the shadow king twice over, and received the very first Imperial Medal of Honor. Despite it all, he is surprisingly humble, insisting in vain that he was, and is, merely doing his duty to the Empire, and to you. He is the very model of an Imperial Knight.

Ivory Rook: Consul of the Crystal Protectorate and head of the Crystal Assembly. One of the first of the Crystal Ponies to be freed from Sombra's mind control, Rook has taken to his position of authority reluctantly, more out of a desire to help his people than any desire for power. Nevertheless, he's proven a charismatic leader and an able administrator, dedicated to doing right by his people, no matter what the cost.

Isabelle Brissette: Relatives of the infamous Brochard dynasty, Isabelle and the Brissette family have been ostracized by the Imperial Nobility, reduced to a shadow of their former influence and prosperity, though by some miracle they still cling to some of their lands. Isabelle herself is a painfully shy little thing, unused to having friends willing to look past her lineage. Gawain hopes to show her that her ancestry does not define her, and that she is more than her uncle's legacy.

Ki Seong: Daughter of the Neighponese ambassador to the Empire of Gryphus, Ki Seong has spent the past several years living in a nation far from the land of her birth, and, much like her father, is committed to being a shining example of Neighpon and conducting herself in an honorable manner at all times. That being said, Gawain suspects she enjoys the opportunity to "let her hair down" amongst others of similarly elevated status, where she will not have to worry as much about what others think of her.

Sebastian Rainfeather: A quiet and somewhat socially awkward young Gryph, Sebastian is an avowed scholar and the heir to the noble house of Rainfeather. Due to his somewhat sheltered upbringing, he, like Gawain, has struggled to make friends, something that Gawain seeks to remedy. For his part, the young Rainfeather is simply glad to have a chess partner his own age who can keep up with him.

Hoofbeard: A former slave turned Pirate Captain, now a respected and influential figure amongst the inhabitants of the island nation of Libertalia. He has agreed to help you and your people, seeing in you a chance to improve Libertalia and stick it to Maretonia's slaveholding class.

King Rutherford: The charismatic Yak responsible for the unification of the numerous Yak clans into a singular, unified Kingdom. From what you've heard, he is exactly what you'd expect a Yak King to be like.

Rose: A Changeling, member of a race of shapeshifting emotivores. Defected to you when your agents nearly stumbled upon the Hive of Queen Phalanx and the conspiracy at the heart of Canterbury and the Church of the Lady of the Lake.

I lived, bitches.
Time to reread and do a new omake then disappear for months. Also I am incredibly flattered my Diamond dog lore made it in.

Wait a minute, hold on. Did Gawain basically just drop off the Equestrians, meet the Princesses, turn his airship around and leave within a day?!

Presumably the crew had restocked supplies during the meeting but still. Worry over war or not that seems like a ludicrous choice.

Either way the war is going to be well on its way by the time he gets back. Shouldn't he take a few days to establish connections and eyes first Intel on Equestria?
This was the first meeting, getting them caught up on current events and introducing ourselves doesn't take that long, we'll send a proper diplomat and set up a embassy later
Still, considering how prone to overreacting ponies can be, it might be fun to see what the consecuences of an airship going over the capital, visiting the palace and then leaving the same day would be. Like, what are the noble's opinions of our nation ("Eh, we have the princesses, we can take them" ; "We still have magic, they are just playing catch up with technology. We had flying cities ages ago"), the general population ("An airship? Ok, I am cutting you off the cider" "WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE" "Ayup, that is not something you see every day") or the scholars ("We could probably do the same using clouds and cloudwalking spells, but is it worth the cost of maintaining a pegasus crew to keep it whole?" ; "How does our magic compare to their charms?"), that kind of thing.

Most civilizations you will encounter at this point in time are similar to Equestria, in that their military is made up of a small core of professional warriors (knights, royal guards, samurai, a warrior caste, etc.), which are supplemented by conscripts, militia, mercenaries and peasant levies.
huh, how do our allies feel about us having such a large standing army then? I mean I know the yaks have always had a smaller army then us but their thing was that each one of their solders can basically act as a living siege weapon do to their magic and generally having a smaller population to us overall. Neighpon I always though had a military around the same size as us just focus more on their navy instead of ground troops do to being an island nation. Haven't really seen much of the other nations armies as we haven't fought with them or against them so I've always assumed that while our army was a bit larger then most other nations they still had professional armies of their own. If not then if they have any spies in Maretonia I can't help but wonder if we're about to take a dip in our relationships with the other known nations we they get to see what it's like when the griffons go to war.
