once we kick the asshole's ass he's gonna get a mass revolt if the action succeeds but we absolutely CAN NOT invade until the rebels have the upper hand and we have an invitation or else we risk the nobles of that kingdom backing king asshat in response of an external invasion.
Yeah we are secretly backing the rebels right now. If and when the rebellion starts we will officially back them and offer our support. Either they accept or the two side kill each other. We then move in to protect and reestablish order with the backing of Wingbardy and the League by way of our diplomacy and charm to get them on our side.

The issue is that an invasion would be a cluster fuck. Backing one side of the civil war with war materials, paying their mercnaries and supplying intellgance won't raise to many eyebrows other then the people who would oppose us no matter what.

Grey Warden
War was coming, it was inevitable, but still didn't expect it before it was too late.

You are Alistair Morningstar a proud member of the militia of Golden-Harvest a border town between Wingbardy and Aquileia. And you were not expecting how today would go.

It all happened so fast, one moment you were enjoying a mid-day meal and the next the entire town is on fire!

It began when two griffons that you don't recognize barged into your home brandishing their weapons.

Bandits, they had expected unarmed civilians. Unfortunately for them you're not.

Quickly you brought up your sheathed sword blocking an overhead strike from a charging bandit. You parry it away and struck the marauder's exposed abdomen with your left talon, causing him to buckle forwards, knocking the wind of him. You brought the sword and smacked him with it hilt.

The bandit's partner dived it trying to skewer you. You curved your body away and tripped him over. You unsheathed your blade and stabbed your assailant through the back, killing him.

The first attacker had gained his second wind, he saw what you did to his partner and charged recklessly trying to slash at you with another overhead strike. You were able to dodge, and he over committed, you react on instinct and behead him the moment his neck was exposed.

Now that the battle was over you go into shock, you just killed to griffons, you killed before sure, dangerous wildlife, feral diamond dogs, and the occasional troll. But this time you just spilt the blood of your fellow griffon.

"Don't move or I'll her! I swear!" Your thoughts interrupted by a third bandit, this time he was holding your mother hostage, knife pressing against her throat, her eyes widened in fear.

"Let her go!" You roared.

"You're not in a position to make demands! I…" An arrow pierced his skull cutting off whatever rant he began.

"You alright Mrs. Morningstar?" She asked.

You turn to see your fellow militiaman and friend Marian with a bow in hand.

"Thanks for the rescue, Marian" You thanked, and then you went to check on your mother.

"Are you hurt mother?" You asked. She shakes her head and you sighed in relief.

"Mother, you have to evacuate!" You told her.

"What about you?" She asked worriedly.

"I'm part of the Militia, I need to help evacuate everyone and defend the town." You looked at her anxious faced and reassured her. "I'll be okay, mother. I promise, I'll return in one piece safe and sound."

"You truly are your father's son." She smiled fondly, caressing your cheek.

"Ahem" Marian coughed, "Sorry to interrupt this touching moment but, town currently being a little… I don't know UNDERSEIGED!"

"Ah right, what happening? Why are these bandits attacking the town?" You asked, griffon bandits were rare and most often dealt by the army.

"Not just ordinary bandits, they're mercenaries." She said grimly pointing at your assailants' insignia on their armor. "War has come to Wingbardy."

"We need to evacuate as many people as we can and then regroup with the rest of the Militia." You decided.

You hug your mother goodbye and you went your separate ways.

The sky was blackened by smoke from burning houses by the time you finished evacuating everyone. The smog grew dense and the temperature drew hotter as you reached the epicenter of the chaos.

Bodies of bandits, militia, and civilians alike pile on the ground. You search around looking for your fellow militiamen.

"Back off your Aquileian bastards!" In the distance you see Captain Brosca and your fellow militiaman and friend Daylen fighting off a wave of mercenaries. You flew in joining the fray.

With the element of surprise on your side, you stabbed your sword into the wing of an unsuspecting enemy causing him to fall to the earth. Marian provided support sniping down enemies where she can.

"Bout time you two got here!" Daylen exclaimed, stabbing his spear through a bandit then retracting it to smack another away with its shaft.

"Sorry, we needed to evacuate town. Where are the rest of militia?" You asked.

"This is the rest of the militia." He said sourly.

"They took out hard and fast before we could even counter act." Captain Brosca cut in. "You said you evacuated the town?"

"Yes Sir! Marian and I evacuated who we could and reported here as soon as we finished." You reported.

"Good, we need to fall back to shelter." Captain Brosca said cutting down another assailant. That was the last one, you all landed back down to the ground.

"But the town…" Daylen began to protest.

"A town is just a group of buildings and farms! It's the people that matters most!" Captain Brosca retorted.

"Captain! You might want to look at this." Marian shouted, she was still in the air, pointing to over the horizon. More enemies, this time, they're better equipped wearing full plate armor.

"War Sworn…" The captain gasped.

Wait what.

"We need to retreat now!" Captain Brosca ordered.

You all took off through the air flying towards the shelter.

"Captain, when you said War Sworn do mean the Knightly Order of Aquileia? I though there weren't anymore Knightly Orders except the Knights Lion?" You asked.

"They were a Knightly Order, but they were disbanded years ago. They were fully integrated into the Aquileian Military, if I recall correctly. However even disbanded they still serve as vanguard for Aquileia." He explained. "Where here."

Instead of a usual underground bunker, the shelter was actually a small fort outpost that fell into disrepair and wasn't worth the upkeep to restore it. We all landed on the ramparts.

"Wait, if the War Sworn are still around, what about the Grey Wardens? Are they still…?" When you were young, you grew up listening your father's tales of Grey Wardens of how they protected Wingbardy from the forces of Evil. Whether it be brigands or Discord himself, the Grey Wardens stood tall. Or at least until the battle of the Northern Ridge.

"I'm afraid not. The War Sworn" He spat, "abandoned the battlefield that day at the battle of the Northern Ridge. They had their numbers intact, we were not so lucky."

Oh.

Wait…

We?

"Captain… are you…are you a Grey Warden?" It was Daylen who beat you to the punch.

"Was. We didn't disband more of…" The captain sighed. "The battle was massacre; the Grey Wardens were the first and last on the battlefield. In the end there weren't even a handful of us left, those of us that remain couldn't support the Order, so we went our sperate ways.

"You didn't even try." It was your mother who spoke. She appeared to have been waiting.

"Mother?" You exclaimed

"Surana." Captain Brosca greeted.

"And let me guess, she a Grey Warden too." Marian sassed.

"No dear, I was their Logistics Manager." She replied, my jaw dropped.

"You could've rebuilt the order you know, you're still alive aren't you, you could have easily taken on a squire or two. We still had most of our assets." Your mother continued.

"You make it sound easy, Surana." Captain Brosca huffed.

"Easy? No. Doable? Absolutely." She replied.

"Then, why didn't Edric do it." He retorted.

"He did, he trained the squire standing walking next to you." She said looking at you.

"Me?" You pointed to yourself, "But, I'm not."

She smiled. "Do you remember the games you and your father use to play, the stories he told you."

"You mean?" You could hardly believe your ears.

"Yes, your father was a Grey Warden. He wanted you to follow in his footsteps and help him rebuild the order." She explained. "But then he passed away… and I allowed his plans to go with him."

"Mother, why are you telling me this now?" You asked.

"Because with this war, I believe it is time the Grey Warden return." She replied, then smiled. "If you're willing of course."

"Yes!" I couldn't even begin to say it fast enough. I cleared "I will take on father's legacy and become a Grey Warden."

"Got room for one?" Daylen smirked.

"Make that two." Marian replied.

"Go on another adventure, without you guys? Perish the thought." I look over to my mother almost pleading.

"I don't see why not? You are both capable fighters trained by Brosca, isn't that right Lt. Commander?"

The captain's face grew red looking as if he was caught raiding the cookie jar.

"Er hm fine, if you insist on become Grey Wardens, then I will personally overlook your training to make sure you meet our standards. This will be the most grueling training you'll ever face. Are you prepared?"

"Yes Sir!" You three chorused.

"Then we shall begin the Joining Ritual as soon as possible. I'll need to set up…" He said.

"Already ahead of you." Your mother cut in. "Everything is ready in the ceremony room."

She led your group to large round chamber lit with candles. She handed Captain Brosca a chalice and filled it with some strange red wine.

"It is time for us to begin the Joining, I shall speak the words that have been said since the first."

"Join us brothers and sisters."

"Join us in the shadows, where we stand vigilant"

"Join us as we carry the duty that cannot be forsworn"

"And should you perish know that your sacrifice will not be forgotten, and one day we shall join you."

He spoke these words and called you forth.

"Alistair Morningstar, from this day forth, you are a Grey Warden.

You take a sip of the Chalice.

Suddenly, you feel a little woozy, your vision darkens. The last thing you hear is.

"He will live, Edric raised a strong one."

Griffins' Versatility

"Welcome, welcome. Take your place, calmly please, thank you. Alright close the doors. Those that are late will learn how not to be if they wish to assist.

Good, now as a little reminder we will review the three species of ponies through the angle of warfare. So, can anypony, except a unicorn, tell me about the unicorns ? Yes, I hear the grumbling and the whisper of favouritism but stay with me, there's a method to the madness. So ?

Yes Brave Heart ?

- Well they...
- A unicorn...

- Oh right you have the same name ! Sorry, sorry. I'm not used to a community with enough ponies for such a situation to be a problem... Well, Lady Brave Heart then.

- Um... Yes. So. Unicorn. They are very polyvalent thanks to there magic. They have a host of spells that goes from support with healing, shields and other... tricks to offensive with lots of projectiles.

- You make it sound like unicorns have to stay behind ! Do you have any idea of what a unicorn is able to do in the thick of it ? We can use any weapon with a lot more finesse than any other race and...

- Thank you Hammer Hold you made your point clear. Please, do remember that we are talking military history not personal exploit and that you are not trying to impress a filly but learning enough to impress a royal officer. Anything to add ?

No ? Then first congratulation to you two for being correct but we are also interested in our weakness. Mainly unicorn low stamina. While they are powerful and versatile, unicorns will get tired fast in a engagement. Two other things that must not be over looked are the luminosity of the magic that make any stealth operation a chore and the fact that a horn can't be protected by armour and that a broken horn is a very handicapping wound and a very frequent one for front-line fighters. Because, remember, armour is great but it always has a weakness.

Now for the pegasus. Once again contain your joy and your resentment, I'm leading you somewhere. So... You there, what's your name ?

- I'm Crash Course sir.

Go on then miss Crash Course.

Pegasus are extremely fast and have some control over the weather. That makes them very good harassment infantry since they can attack back line infantry, often made of unicorns, before the front line can stop them and if they have the time they can transform the terrain to their advantage.

- Good. Think to add that they can fly, it may sound obvious but situation were you fight back to back with very strange character happen and you do not want miscommunication in those situations. Stating the obvious doesn't cost you a lot and it might be the difference between a plan that goes without a hitch and one that goes FUBAR. Do try not to make one of your superior go into a black rage by abusing it. You know, read the room.

Any weakness ?

- Oh yes. Like the unicorn their stamina will fade quickly in a fight and a wound to their very exposed wing will ground them and keep them from getting away.

- What more the more armour a pegasus is packing the slower they are. And remember, say it with me :

Armour is great but it always as a weakness.
- Armour is great but it always as a weakness.

Thank you miss Happy Drum. No don't blush, you can brag you had the courage to do what twenty of your pair did not. Next on the list earth pony what of them ? Hammer Hold thank you for waiting to be asked. Go on.

Earth ponies are the back bone of any composed army worthy of the name and...

- Please keep any such commentary out of it. We are trying to describe not judge.

- What ? But isn't it true ? If we don't have earth pony in the front then we ether have to rely on close combat unicorn that will exhaust themselves way to quick or pegasus that cannot held the choc of earth pony or their usual enemy !

- ...Well, I am glad to hear you appreciate the subject. To answer yes in almost every situation it is almost madness to do without earth pony in the front but by bringing judgment into a description you create ways of thought and put your pride into that definition.

Imagine for example that a dragon fights with you. Would he not have his use in the front line ? With pride in the line, you might make a decision that is not wrong but not a good as it could be. Keep an open mind about things. Life likes to challenge our beliefs.

- ...Oh

- But I stopped you in very good way so please do continue.

- Right... So they make the front line thanks to their greater strength and stamina. They will often be the first to fall and the last to sleep. Thanks to their strength they can more easily be equipped with armour. They are in summary the heavy infantry of ponykind.

For their weakness I'd say lack of versatility and mobility ?

- Yes, that is their major drawback. Think of them as a falling rock. It is easy to see were it will fall but if you are under it you will regret it.

Right so unicorn, pegasus and earth pony. Why did I put them in that order ?

- Because you're a unicorn ?

- Thank you sir Brave Heart for that. The class certainly needed such a intervention. Refrain from them in the future. Miss Happy drum ?

- Order of flexibility ?

- Good ! Exactly. A good unicorn can be a least passable in any post due to their magic. As Hammer Hold said they will tire and pegasus buckle in the front line but they can try. Earth pony cannot yet do the other two jobs though they compensate here by doing an invaluable job were they can.

Well I'm glad you remember the basics now to the point of today let me present to you the race that I would put beyond the unicorn in term of versatility. I present to you : the griffin !

Alright what can you tell me about the picture ? Don't raise your hoof just go when ready.

- They... Um... they have wings ?

- And a beak !

- They have claws on their hoof.

- It's called a talon and it's not a hoof.

- They actually have both look at it's hind pawn.

- Oh right.

- Hum they're brown ?

- Thank you that's a good resume. Just lastly no Mister ?

- Moss Tail.

- No they are not all brown. The colour of their plumage comes from their parents. For the rest let me take it point by point.

First the beak : Think of it as very sharp mouth. They can use it to speak, feed
and it can be used in a pinch if they need to cut or pierce something. It is a bit too weak to pierce armour above simple leather but you know what I think about armour. They will not use their beak for action and fight if they can. They are clever and sentient and preferred not to use them in so barbaric a fashion. At least it was the case before the Discordian Era... Between us I am the only one the feel weird saying it ?

- You don't like it ?

- No, no it roll of the tongue quite well. I guess I'm just not used to it. Anyway next we have their hind legs, pawn and claws. Yes, they are a package deal.

Their legs are quite powerful. Almost on par with earth pony which is a achievement. They use them for movement on the ground and for propulsion if they need to jump or begin flight. More on this when I'll talk about the wings. Their claws are less sharp than their beak but do not underestimate them they stay able to pierce the flesh if allowed, and you will have to live with very impressive scars if you survive the blood loss. What more with the power of their legs the kick might be enough to buckle you and make you fall.

In a fight against a griffon make everything possible to not fall. If you show your undefended flank or your belly you will die. Not discussion, no argument. Immediate death. That is because au point three, the talons. Does any one here know about dexterity ?

Lots of unicorns that is to be expected. You...

- Hope Searing sir

- We're listening.

- Dexterity is a term of magic used for small filaments of power that will only attach themselves on a part of a object rather than the complete object. It is mostly used for economising stamina and making sudden unpredictable movement.

- Very good. Since it is so specialised do not be worried if you didn't know about it. It is quite situational for ponies. But for griffins this is a capability they all have. Look at the talons again. See how it is made of for long and separated claws ? This let them hold onto almost any object with their talked above strength. It is sadly only a theory due to the recent loss of knowledge but our own weapon design might very well come from them as they are, sorry were, reputed smith.

This leads to an extremely important fact of any warfare with or against griffins, they will use weapon. All of them. You cannot recognise which role they have in an army by their physic but only by their weapon and armour. Yes, you heard me right a griffin can and will fulfil any of the role talked about before. To make it quick:

The bows users are the back line. The sword user the heavy infantry. The spears users are also shock infantry but they have another role we will come back to. And the javelins users are the main skirmisher.

Any question ?

- Yes. What's the round things there ?

- Thank you for the transition. This is a shield. Yes it is use like a magic shield except it can be held for the entire battle without pause. It is mostly defensive though being punch by a metallic object will always hurt. Contrary to armour it is adaptable to the situation meaning that through it has a lot more area not covered it is almost always in the right place if you know how to use it. This shield makes most projectile attack useless or extremely diminished.

- Any question ?

- How do they hold onto it ?

- Right. This is again the talon advantage. There is ether a bar or a strap to the back of it that let them grasp it. Another ?

- Why do we not use it too ?

- It depends. Unicorns because it is extremely distracting to hold it permanently and because having it and not using it will still tire you were a magic shield can just be poped at an opportune time. For the other race, holding a shield in your mouth is possible but your field of vision will be so crippled it is extremely rarely worth it though I am sure you can find examples of it in books. Do remember that successful exception in books are often built on the body of the hundred that failed. Anything more ? No ?

Then the spear. A weapon that is a bit more know since it can be installed on harness and is a weapon that is more useful for earth pony and pegasus than for unicorns. So has you may know a spear let you decouple your strength in a charge assuring you an almost guaranteed kill if well aimed and an excellent defence against enemy charge. Why do we not use it more then ? Yes mister Moss Tail ?

- Because of their tendency to get stuck in the target. Meaning you will be immobilised on the front line.

- Exactly. So why do griffins use such a dangerous weapon ? ... ... No one know ? Well then...

- Oh ! They can drop the spear !

- Very good Mister Brave Heart. Yes griffin thanks, once again to their talons, can drop the spear if it gets stuck. This makes their "Lancier", mark the word down, a terrifying force against any creature. Any. This leads us to their second jobs, monster hunter. Here the definition of a monster is anything higher than two times a pony's height. Dragons, troll, some sea monsters, etc. Those creatures are terribly hard to put down due to their thick hide and enormous mass even before any special capacity. Lancier are great against them since the long spear can often bypass their resistance and hit a important organ behind and their flight ability let them often survive the encounter.

Question ? No ? Let's continue then I'm afraid we might lack the time to covert it all today.

Their flight then. In comparison to a pegasus, they are slightly slower and a bit less agile but they are very good at staying in flight for long period of time. If you are in a fight against a griffin and you did not loose or kill him in ten to twenty minutes your have lost. You will be too exhausted to continue fighting where he will be fresh as a flower and ready to give you the coup de grace. What more in certain situations their better constitution will let them make manoeuvre that would be debilitating to a pegasus. Think of using the ground to make a tight turn or other such dangerous idea, giving them great boosts of mobility close to obstacles.

Anypony want to make a resume of the griffin ? Miss Crash Course we're all hears.

- So griffins are an intelligent creature that share almost all the ability of the ponies races except magic ? You did not talk about it so I assumed...

- Yes, they are without magic well deduced. Go on ?

- Yes. While they are slightly less in any one role, their balance of ability makes them incredibly polyvalent and useful in any situation. They can make progress on almost any front given the time, and they can hold fast against almost any assault. Since they are good smith it stand to reason that their armours are also of great quality and since they are stronger than pegasus they are not bound to be light infantry to fly. I'd say their use in a battle would be in reserve. Ready to react to any change in the battlefield while the commanding staff adjust the plan.

- Yes. Very good. The term for such a unit is Shock infantry, note it down. This will be all for today. You can pack and talk about the subject while you wait for the bell. Miss Crash Course may I ask you what career you aim for ?

- Oh... Yes, I'm aiming for a rank in the royal guard. Or maybe a post as officer until I done enough to deserve the place.

- Well continue on this road, and I don't doubt our majesties will be glad to have you defending them.

NA : It was supposed to be short. It's 2542 words and I had more things to had but with the length it didn't fit anymore... So yeah

This is a little look at pony warfare and a bit at griffin warfare. I tried to make it dialogue only to see what it look like. I'm not disappointed but i'm the author so I don't count.

I use infantry and not cavalry because cavalry is tied to horse and man on horses while infantry come from infant and the young age recruit have when they enter service. So ponies militaries probably won't have any cavalry corps ever.

I'll hold onto the bonus (whatever it may be) for the campaign.

Not Omake

Writing this I came to the realisation that we have more sword users than spears users. That doen't seem normal... Usually training to use a spear is quicker and a spear is easier and cheaper to make than a sword and as almost all our units can be considered cavalry (by our standard) they are also very effective maybe more than swordgriffin would be. So is there a reason I overlooked, is it a quest decision or something ?

I would like to add that while Pegasi might not be dangerous on their own, they are dangerous in groups.
Basically if you guys remember how Flash Magnus fought those Dragons and other Pegasi helped him by making a storm. Pegasis are formed in weather teams for a reasons, think of it as highly trained air units (wonderbolts).
In case of war against equestria, or Pegasis for the matter they can't be allowed domination over skies or they they will make a storm and then it's game over .

I think we should fear being blasted into oblivion by Princess Luna or the Sunbutt way more, since we have no immortal raising a celestial body as a wake up exercise.

They are a hero units, but they are not invincible. I'm talking about military strategy's here where you must take entire army's in to the acount.
Princesses can blast us but if Pegasi give us bad weather (hurricane for example ) you can say bye bye to entire army or country side.

Edit.

But given Celestias nature we don't have to worry about that as long as we don't attack them.

I think it is more in line with Griffon biology. While spear is good for humans, or Diamond Dogs for the matter it's kinda isn't for a Griffons who walk on four legs.
And in the air as well, they can keep a sword sheathed while they are in the air allowing for more mobility and use it when they are close to the victim.
Not to mention that in air battle formations like phalanx won't work because enemy can strike from above and below as well.

Military applications of weather is likely, but outright hurricanes seem to be extremely difficult to set up even without enemy fire disrupting the flight formation needed to create and direct it.

I could have formulated my though better but you'd have made a very good point about aerial battle anyway. Yeah spear really aren't that good (or any good for that matter) in a "dogfight" and I forgot that the griffins we were fighting could fly too (I'm a dumdum). So in our situation the ratio make a lot of sense. Though in the future if we ever fight a enemy that is locked to the ground having griffins that can fly in full speed, spear someone and then get back in the (limited) safety of the sky seems a lot more useful than sword users than won't be able to leverage their flying as much and so will need to stay close to retribution. (Which is what I was thinking about, flying shock troupes. Griffins with spear on the ground do sound incomfortable.)

And yeah I am terrified of any magic user hero or battle group right now. Except an extremely successful ambush or first strike I don't see us having the upper hand.

@Somebodynobody10 hurricanes might be hard to set up if they set it with one or two group but the army of a nation will probably have the manpower (ponypower sound too weird) to do it and they don't need to built it on the battle field. Even if it's hard they just need to do the hard work and then to coral it toward our troupes/navy/frontier/anything we'd like to keep.

+10 to a roll of your choice.

Ok, lots of omakes and associated bonuses to keep track of here. Could everyone post the bonuses they've accumulated and indicate which action they'd like them to be applied to, or say whether they'd like them to be held in reserve?

Good to see I'm not the only one that see the problem of using swords as the main weapon for so many troops instead of Spears. If I had to guess why stories and movies and TV shows have made the sword out to be the weapons used by everyone instead of the actual weapon the spear. It is a trope now that people think is true.

Very well. I have been granted a plus 10 and would like it to bolster our Intrigue Roll.

for the total of bonuses we have plus 10 to cavalry and plus 50 to rebellion.
