You don't need your Spies to tell you that the Maretonians are absolutely furious at this "grievous insult and blatant attack on their way of life." But your actions have stirred up as much fear and paranoia as they have anger. Maretonia's nobility is now very aware of the reach of Imperial Intelligence, and the growing boldness of the Abolitionist movement has kept many a slave-owner awake at night.
Good. Fear the reaches of Imperial Intelligence, do not sleep soundly at night for we are here! Bwhahaha!

Ok. Now that the maretonian situation is stable, what should we focus on? I an partial to intrigue/diplo the yaks to secure their black metal mine.

A few reckless voices call for war, but most content themselves with public protests and letters to Queen Mareia, though a few of the smarter ones try (in vain) to hire mercenaries and pirates to raid Gryphus territory.

The Queen herself, though publicly outraged by the "blatant theft and violation of national sovereignty", takes no obvious action against Gryphus and its allies. Though tensions between Gryphus and Maretonia have reached an all-time high, an all-out war seems unlikely at the moment.
I feel like the Maretonians aren't going to do anything to us immediately, I think their going to be busy with the Abolitionists for a bit. If the abolitionists movement grows big enough and ends slavery, great! If the nobility wins, then not so great. We should keep an eye an Maretonia and if the nobility gain the upper hand we intervene with the Imperial Intelligence again.

Age: 48

Titles: Emperor of Gryphus, King of Griffonia, Inheritor of the Imperial House of Gryphus, The Unifier, Great Winged Alpha, The Lightbringer

Description: Before your wife got her talons on you, you were a fairly typical example of the Griffon species. An unmistakably masculine build, a strong, prominent beak, feathers and fur that seem to be perpetually well-groomed, and a pair of piercing amber eyes hiding a fierce intelligence. Not anymore though. Oh, you still have all those qualities, they're just overshadowed by the massive amount of muscle you've put on since you started your wife's "enhanced training regimen". Your wings can lift dumbbells, and your legs are like tree-trunks supporting a barrel chest rippling with abdominal muscles. In short, you have the build of a person who has been lifting heavy objects his entire life.

Persons of Interest

???: A friendly and strangely casual Griffon female you met at your inaugural ball. Despite having a wonderful evening chatting with her, you never got her name.

Garibaldi Talonuelli: Formerly the Duke of Wingbardy, now the Grand Duke of Wingbardy, Talonuelli is a beloved public figure in his home province and an experienced administrator. After saving his city and people from Brochard's attempted invasion and negotiating his province's vassalage over a few drinks, you'd like to think you can count him among your friends.

Federico Montefeathertro: Duke of the (former) City-State of Urbirdo, and your Father-in Law. He might just be the friendliest of the former Feathersians, having agreed to back you and your kingdom without question or condition during the Brochard Crisis, and hiring a mercenary outfit as a belated wedding gift. You're reasonably certain he likes you, as much as In-Laws can like each other anyway.

Koryū Ryuō: The draconic Emperor of the Island Kingdom of Neighpon. Having agreed to assist you in the war against the Shadow King and making fast friends with your adoptive daughter, you consider him a decent fellow who you can trust to keep his word, and a valuable ally against any destructive forces the world can throw at you.

Minamoto Tadakatsu: Shogun of Neighpon. Born to peasant farmers, he's more than earned his place as the most powerful Samurai amongst the Qilin. After he lead the Neighponese contingent during the Invasion of the Crystal Empire and kindly instructed you in the myriad varieties and intricacies of tea on the campaign trail, you've come to respect the more-than-century-old warrior.

Konrad Hardbeak, "The Kingslayer": Grandmaster of the Knights Lion and Hero of the Empire. Beheaded Brochard the pretender, crippled Sombra the shadow king twice over, and received the very first Imperial Medal of Honor. Despite it all, he is surprisingly humble, insisting in vain that he was, and is, merely doing his duty to the Empire, and to you. He is the very model of an Imperial Knight.

Ivory Rook: Consul of the Crystal Protectorate and head of the Crystal Assembly. One of the first of the Crystal Ponies to be freed from Sombra's mind control, Rook has taken to his position of authority reluctantly, more out of a desire to help his people than any desire for power. Nevertheless, he's proven a charismatic leader and an able administrator, dedicated to doing right by his people, no matter what the cost.

Isabelle Brissette: Relatives of the infamous Brochard dynasty, Isabelle and the Brissette family have been ostracized by the Imperial Nobility, reduced to a shadow of their former influence and prosperity, though by some miracle they still cling to some of their lands. Isabelle herself is a painfully shy little thing, unused to having friends willing to look past her lineage. Gawain hopes to show her that her ancestry does not define her, and that she is more than her uncle's legacy.

Ki Seong: Daughter of the Neighponese ambassador to the Empire of Gryphus, Ki Seong has spent the past several years living in a nation far from the land of her birth, and, much like her father, is committed to being a shining example of Neighpon and conducting herself in an honorable manner at all times. That being said, Gawain suspects she enjoys the opportunity to "let her hair down" amongst others of similarly elevated status, where she will not have to worry as much about what others think of her.

Sebastian Rainfeather: A quiet and somewhat socially awkward young Gryph, Sebastian is an avowed scholar and the heir to the noble house of Rainfeather. Due to his somewhat sheltered upbringing, he, like Gawain, has struggled to make friends, something that Gawain seeks to remedy. For his part, the young Rainfeather is simply glad to have a chess partner his own age who can keep up with him.

Haha, no, it's not stable.
though a few of the smarter ones try (in vain) to hire mercenaries and pirates to raid Gryphus territory.
We still have a possibility of them getting their hands on a couple of our people. We're probably going to have to sink a couple more actions to have them see taking even one of our people too much of a hassle or/and risk.

Two actions I really want this coming turn is the diamond dog knights more knightly orders to field against Maretonia knights plus I like the image of the DD knights ambushing them from underground and setting up skill training for the crystal ponies.

Hypooooooocriteeeeeeeeeee~

But mostly good new this update.

Actually she isn't. Our citizens are kidnapped by the pirates, then sold to Maretonian's who didn't even know their origins.

On other hand while we did bring our citizens back we conducted multiple secret operations within another country without permission (which is us breaking their sovereignty) , then we did steal what they pretty much consider their property under their laws.

Queen Mareia seems to be facing the issue of an uprising nobility. The first update stated that there was considerable resistance to her rule because of centralization under her rule. Olive Branch gave us a 5000 offer for our people, and then the next turn Mareia herself offered 1500 to sell back. We wound up stealing them. I think this leads to a situation where neither faction in Maretonia is happy, but Mareia if she's crafty could spin it as the belligerent nobility's fault for insulting Gryphus and inviting infiltration in her country, which she could use to FURTHER centralize her authority. Mareia's goal is not to defend Slavery, her goal is to remain on the Throne of Maretonia.

That defense is as shaky as they come.

A) Just as she can deny the actions of the slavers/pirates that kidnapped our citizens as "not her responsibility" we can deny the actions of any abolitionists gryphons that just so happen to have liberated our citizens from foreign custody. It's bullshit, but so is any claim that just because Marination is only indirectly bankrolling the forces that abducted our citizens, they weren't at fault for their abduction at all.

B) Even if you somehow buy that she isn't at fault for the abductions, she did deny our sovernty to our face when we walked into her court with a list of citizens that were kidnapped and in the custody of her nobles, and basically turned us away with a, "Nah bruh, these ain't your gryphons anymore. Ya gotta pay for them like anyone else." Like we were some brat complaining about getting gypped by a merchant. They broke our laws by enslaving our citizens, and they didn't respect those laws.

Actually she seem to be willing to give back our people. The problem was that she didn't have the power to actually do so without getting deposed. It was the other nobles that went in your words "Nah bruh, these ain't your gryphons anymore. Ya gotta pay for them like anyone else", not her.

I'm wondering, in the future, will Hardbeak vs.Ravenburg be the superman vs. Batman of Griffonia?

"You cant beat Hardbeak! It's just not done!"

"But Ravenburg with prep time tho..."

Actually she didn't want to, the nobles pretty much forced her to unless she wanted a civil war on her hand. She actually wanted to not possibly be on worse relations than needed with our empire.
Unfortunately, while it was clear that Queen Mareia (sovereign ruler of Maretonia) was in favor of a speedy resolution to this diplomatic crisis, many of the aforementioned slaveholders were not.
They had paid a lot of money for your people, and they didn't see why they should have to just "hoof over their property to meet the demands of a foreign government". And, since these slaveholders were almost invariably powerful nobles, in many cases being just a step or two below the Queen in terms of authority and wealth, Mareia couldn't just overrule them and "confiscate their property" without risking a revolt or civil war. And so, in an effort to buy time and pursue other avenues for peace, the Unicorn Queen had sent a Emissary to your lands to speak to you directly on her behalf in hopes of finding a compromise that wouldn't lead to a war on either front.

Unfortunately, this strategy appears to have backfired. The slaveholding nobles, who have apparently been chaffing under the slow increase of central authority and royal involvement in their personal demesnes over the past few decades, are using this incident as a political rallying cry, insisting that handing over their slaves would set a dangerous precedent for both their foreign and domestic policy, appearing as weak to their neighbors and giving away even more power to their Queen. Every day their influence grows, as more moderate nobles and even common ponies are swayed by their arguments. It's clear that they're not going to just give up your people.
The negotiations barely begin before they hit a brick wall in the form of the Maretonian Emissary starting quite bluntly that the only way that the current "owners" of your enslaved people would agree to part with them would be if you and your Empire agreed to compensate them for their loss. And, given the negative precedent this would set, as well as the significant value of your people on the slave market due to their uniqueness, the price tag is...considerable. And no offers, arguments or threats will convince Olive Branch to lower it or consider alternative means of compensation. You're beginning to suspect that the Emissary actually wants these negotiations to fail. The fact that his brother is one of the ringleaders of the opposition to the Queen of Maretonia only lends credence to this theory.
Overall she seems quite reasonable and she was only "publically outraged" because on the political stage she has to act like she is. She hasn't taken any steps to get any payback for her political rival nobles who actually want her to fail so they can gain the political upper-hand.

Maretonian: I'll pay you 5000 to attack Gryphus.
Pirate: *looks at massive Gryphonian navy* No thanks, I choose life.

Edit:
You know, we could probably have our spies set up a witch hunt in Maretonia, much like McCarthyism. Have nobles accusing each other of being Gryphonian spies and abolitionists, and getting thrown in jail and replaced because of it. It would probably help Mareia quite a bit by making the nobles too busy to put much effort into bothering her and because she could have some of the more anti-crown nobles accused and replace them with pro-crown ponies. We could also benefit, by maneuvering to get some abolitionists in power.

Just have to, you know, make sure they don't get any actual abolitionists. That would probably be bad.

Unfortunately, our navy is still quite small with only having *looks at nation state* 35 ships, of which only 15 are carracks. The other 20 are still bolt-throwers. Of course, that could mean we have an absolutely massive navy right now, but I have no clue how the other navies look in comparison.

Well at least we have an ally that has a strong navy, and we did give them the secrets to gunpowder as well.

Maybe we should go with more Intrigue with Mari, see about stoking the flames a little more. Maybe attack their Economy and feel out some political blocks that could be used for our benefit?

Edit: OH maybe stage a few accidents to help our Abolitionist friends. You know support them more?

At the very least she's not stupid. We can't really know if she's good, evil, pro-slavery or against, or anything else about her. But she seems relatively smart, and she obviously cares about keeping her crown.

All of this makes her AT THE VERY LEAST better than both Brochard and Sombra.

Neighpon is 100+ ships i think. Still our navy will get slowly better automatically now, so we don't really need to worry anymore about it. And we could always rush carrack construction in the future if we really had to.

I think supporting the abolitionists is a given. After all why should we send our people to war, when we can get same or even better result by supporting the faction we like in their kingdom?

As long as they're dealing with the abolitionists they have less resources to use against us. And if we get REALLY lucky they could get slavery abolished from within.

Also what year is it after the defeat of discord? Because exactly 52 years after his defeat is the Cosmic Convergence where magic will get a bit wonky due to the stars and planets moving in complete and perfect order. (Also occurs again roughly a thousand years later but the first tike wqs noted to be in "the 52nd year of the reign of Luna and Celestia")

One would think this is a good thing for magic (because harmony of the heavens) but it makes magic very deeply aligned with order.

This effect is so powerful it forcibly inverted discord HIMSELF from a being of pure chaos into a being of pure order.

If we are invading and we have soke astrological knowledge and how it links to magic we could time the maretonian invasion on that day and their magic would be on the fritz making it an easy attack.

Sadly the convergence only lasts a few hours but if we time it right we could basically walk right in while their magic is busy backfiring.
So basically it's possible to pull an Avatar Black Sun on them? Great!
So this is gonna be a Cloak and Dagger sort of war huh...I guess that well just gut them from the inside and feed them to the fishes later on!
One idea could be to fan the flames of her opposition and then intervene in favor of the queen for further concessions, though that comes with its own set of risks.

Well good option might be to meet with the Queen first, try to settle things because while helping abolitionists is good it's useless if they start to be associated with forgein country that is Maretonian enemy by the population. Remember at the start of this big part of population bought the story nobles sold.

I think our foreign policy goals for the moment should be securing Libertalia and supporting the abolitionists. Ideally we avoid a war, but if one comes we don't want to deal with the pirates as a distraction.

Actually, since we have enough diplomatic slots we should also work on the Yaks. Pirates are the priority though.

Went to see Matilda the musical last night. Have to say it was amazing and i kind of want a school/orphanage with a cruel and sadistic headmistress so i can use some of the songs.

In particular ii would love to use Revolting Children for it as all the little pups, ponies, and grifs revolt against the cruel headmistress and the uncaring teachers and basically take over the school and expose what happened (in true mlp logic it would likely become a kid run school/orphanage and be incredible because of it)

Here is the song, listen and tell me it isnt amazing.

EDIT: Yeah, a school might fit the songs mote.... I could see there being a few truly bad schools being out there. In fact.... This could be a whole omake series about how schools gained a system of rules to ensure they do not become that bad. And with the songs from the musical (there are a lot of good ones) it opens up a lot of doors. Heck, if one wanted there is enough good songs for one aong per omake.

I even have a concept.

It is told from the POV of a new grif going to school for the first time, she lives far from the capital but the school has decent facilities as was built prediscordian times and survived relatively untouched (some halls are upside down and a few waterfountians enjoy squirting at people and laughing).

Said grif enters and sees what is going on, experiencing the uncaring teachers, the cruel punishments from the headmistress, the numerous rules that ensure you will always be breaking one at some point, and so on.

Eventually she decides enough is enough and plans a revolt of the children and drives them out.

This could even be stretched over multiple omakes for greater bonuses or even a series bonus if questor does such things as it has many songs we can use and if we base each installment around one of the songs... that is quite the number of omakes.

Probably to much work but an idea if someone wants to use it.
