Right, so I have made my triumphant return to this quest, and with me I bring a game plan for the coming future in regards to Maretonia, Libertalia, and beyond.

1. Those who Wish for Peace Prepare for War:
A: Drill Drill Drill, and when your tired, Drill some more: pretty simple, increase the quality of our armies, training, equipment, and training.
B: Minutemen: War with Maretonia is inevitable, so we must be ready at a moments notice. Build watchtowers near our borders, establish spy rings, have troops ready and able at a moments notice when the coin drops.
C: Cutting the Teeth/Earn their spurs: in the meantime, we need experience. Cut our troops teeth, as it were. Stage war games, mock battles, encourage annual hunts of the monster population. Have our diamond dogs act as a flanking, sabatoge force. Stage mock battles with Neighpon at sea, hunt pirates. We need experience, and we need it soon.
D: Full stomachs and Sharp minds: The Two Kings of warfare: Logistics and Stratagems. An Army Marches on its stomach, so we need to make sure ours doesn't starve before the campaign even real begins. Establish supply depots at regular points through out our empire will make things easier if we are invaded, and must retreat. Also, communication is paramount. Establishing signaling posts or an Gryphon equivalent is very much so needed. We need to create choke points as well, or establish points where the enemy can take it, but it will cost them the war. Also, our generals and nobles need to be able to adapt to situations, especially against foes with superior magical capabilities.

Stay tuned for part 2 and 3.

Part 2: Gold, Diplomacy, and Knives in the Dark.
Economy
A: Trade is the lifeblood of nations: All the war prep in the world won't matter if our economy collapse's. Our base must be strong, and for that we need trade. Encourage more trade with the Neighponese and Yak tribes, find new trade partners. We need more ports, more trade ships, more gold.
B: Mine, Mine, Mine: our empire is filled with mountains, just waiting to be exploited. Put our Miners and Diamond Dogs to good use, Find more sources of gold, silver, iron, and other materials.
C: There be gold in them Crops, Boyo: mining is all well and good, but it's only part of the battle. Farming, clothing, Silk, Jewelry, lumber, all are potential sources of income.
Diplomacy
A: The Land of the Rising Sun: Neighpon is our greatest ally, and we must keep it that way. Encourage better relations, change gifts, have our children spend time in their courts, and theirs in ours. It can only help our prospects.
B: Rumbling Hoofs: The Yaks are a potential Powerhouse, keep them on our side. Same as A, but with yaks.
C: Shining Crystal: As with A and b, Do so with the Crystal Ponies.
D: Beyond the Horizon: We must find new civilizations, new trade, new allies. Start Seeking beyond our allies borders.
Politics
A:Sort the Court: Our nobles and knights are our back bone, and while they love us, do they like each other? Establish a Judicial Court to air noble grievances, allow duels to first blood, encourage ward ships and tournaments. Low chance of Civil War is a good thing, no chance is better.
B: We the People: our citizens are our life blood, our very bedrock, and as such, improving their lot can only strengthen our power base.
C: Here comes the Bride/Groom: Our children are almost of age, and while them finding love would be great, it wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out for potential political matches. Love is great, but love and a binding Alliance to a major house or ally? Even better.
Intrigue
A: Slaves? What Slaves?: Finding our citizens is paramount, we must bring them home. Have Ravensburg scour Maretonia for our peoples exact location, and prepare plans to bring them home.
B: All Aboard the Freedom Express: the Railroad and anti slave nobles is too great an asset to ignore. Get in contact, and start planning to get our people and other slaves out.
C: The Strong Slave make many bricks, the weak make few, the dead make none: Maretonias entire economy is slave based. That's a strength that allows them to have their citizens greater freedom. But it's also their greatest weakness. Remove their base, destroy what their economy stands on, and watch as the tower falls.
Part 3 incoming.

Part 3: Science and Sorcery, The Heirs

Learning
A: To Kill Magic: Magic is a power that can ruin or save a nation, win or lose a battle. Magic is the advantage Maretonia has over us, so we must nullify that advantage.
B: The Times are a changing: The world is changing, growing, evolving, so we must change with it. Create new weapons, develop new technologies, cut red tape.
Personal
A: Our dearest Treasure: Our children are growing up, and we will not be around forever. Spend time with our children, and encourage their bonds with each other. Family is all we have in the end.
B: When The World turns Against you, know you have Tribe: Our children are growing up, and will need friends in this world. Encourage them to get out, send them to our allies courts or subjects. They will rule one day, and must be ready with allies.
C: To Prepare, To Say goodbye: Our son is almost of age, and we are getting older. One day, our son will rule. But he must prepare. Have our son earn a command, or hunt for pirates. Let the boy earn his spurs.
Jesus, that took a while. So, what do you guys think? Please let me know, or just ignore it lol.

Alright, lets see... We're basically doing A and C right now, B we're on the ball on and were going to do anyway, and we just did a logistical shuffle with our troops. I'm always a huge fan of proper logistics though. With rail lines, we can supply our troops waaaay better than maretonia. plus they open up a future tech in the form of the telegraph. but that'd need electricity first. Prepping for war right now's a bit early, but making those watch towers is definitely a priority, since we didn't take em last turn since we wanted to see if they were amenable to returning our people to us. But now that we know, its pretty important to do.

Edit: woops, realized some stuff got deleted from this section.

On trade, we'll definitely keep trading. we have those caravans coming and going and once the pirate issues solved trade with neighpon will resume. Mining will pick up even more with trains getting goods here and there. Making goods is... well, Im pretty sure we cant't really touch that stuff as king? Beer and directing the poeple to grow crops is probably the limit. oh and tech innovation.

Just did A, and pretty sure we'll keep doing A since they seem liket he only reasonable people in the entire world right now since the yaks still seem to have some infighting (guys just cant seem to let grudges go), just diffused B, C we're going to be working on next turn, and D is something I don't think we can afford right now.

Courts will be fine, since our people love us, B we always do, C is a bit iffy, but I'm sure QM was going to be doing something for marriges soon for Gawain anyway since he's nearly of age. On the intrigue options, all of those are things we've discussed in length, but good to have em in a list.

Part 3: Science and Sorcery, The Heirs

Learning
A: To Kill Magic: Magic is a power that can ruin or save a nation, win or lose a battle. Magic is the advantage Maretonia has over us, so we must nullify that advantage.

Getting more use out of orichalcum would be neat, especially since the yaks are also sitting on a pile of the stuff. B will continue as always. Might not be able to do A as much as we'd like since we're probably going to use some overtime on actions or an imperial order to get it done faster, but pretty sure next turn pearl's going to be going to the crystal empire since it is now fully rebuilt. B is a bit difficult... At least as of right now. maybe whne they're older. Once he's of age, could try giving Gawain some responsibility, maybe have him work as a diplomat or something. He's pretty smart and has a higher dip score than we do. Or have him spend some time working as a military commander. Or both, organizing some troops with neighpon on the seas, but that's more risky since he'd be out of our sight andmore likely to die... Which would suck.

Omake: Late Night Adventures (Canon)
@Lisain Thanks for the idea! Gave a bit of a fluff piece for some hopeful characteristics for the children and for Gabriella to show off some of those momma bird tendencies.

Late Night Adventures

Stretching a claw up to your beak to stifle a yawn you continued to sleepily walk through the nursery towards the small tea room that Momma has in the big palace. You know she doesn't like sweets that much, but you know better. Every tea time Momma has a fresh batch of biscuits on talon for when you and Pearl and Gwnny all get together to, what was it that Papa called it again, network? Catch up? Some big grown-up word no doubt, but the long and short of it is that you're feeling peckish there are biscuits in the tea room and by Claw and Beak you'll have something to eat!

With a determined nod of your head, you roll your shoulders and flex your wings ready to pounce atop the too far away door handle leading out of the Nursery when your ears catch a faint sob carried on the wind. Straining your ears you turn your head one way then the next trying to follow the sobbing, at least you think it was sobbing, wait what if it's a ghost!? Like that big awful Shadow King that Momma and Papa beat?! Your heart is pounding and you can feel your fur puff up as the darkened Nursery takes on a far more sinister look, every shadow a potential foe. Your half tempted to fly back to your bed and curl deep under the covers until the sun returns when you catch that cry once more. What if someone is hurt? Oh gosh, what if Gwnny or Pearl are hurt!?

Your hackles rise and your claws grind the stonework under your paws at the sheer nerve of that no good shadow! Your Momma and Papa kick it's flank up and down the whole Peregrin, you are your parent's daughter and you'll kick that mean shadow's butt too! Heart full of courage and claws sharp you took off after the crying, you'll be just like the Grandmaster Hardbeak, there to save the day!

Down the hall, take a left and your heart beats even faster as the crying grows louder before you skid on the far too slippery floors past the door. Running back you look up to realize where you are, it's Pearl's room! That jerk is back to get Pearl from your family! It's enough to have you screech in outrage, but Papa always said the best surprise is the one that they never see! So you lower yourself into a pounce, flick your tail just right and leap towards the handle!

It takes your body weight swinging back and forth for the handle to finally give way. Once the door was open you as sneaky as those Nieghpons could be landed in a crouch on the imported Crystal carpet silent as that funny bird Papa talks to all the time. Eyes alert you look about trying to find that stupid shadow pony only to find Pearl in bed, tossing and turning in her sleep. Pearl must be fighting the shadow pony in her dreams! Only one thing to do!

-----

"Crystaaaaaaaaals."

"No! Get away! Get away!"

No matter how hard you run the creeping shadow with its dark glowing green eyes of fire and smoke continued to gain upon you. You have to go faster, you have to! Yet when you look down at your hooves you whinny in distress at the sight of manacles latched around your ankles hobbling you in place.

"Mine. My Crystal Pony! Mine!" The shadows surround you now as you looked up and the face of nightmares leered out from the shade.

You try to break free of the chains, to think of the wonderful hope that you had once felt with all your fellow crystal ponies when you saw it. The dreaded helmet descending towards your head, you double your efforts, no triple them to break free when you could feel cold steel atop your head you thrashed about trying to get away. Only to feel sharp claws capture your face and the mask slide down the rest of the way, the green haze overwhelming your vision once again.

You awaken with a gasp sprawled across your bed, cheeks sore and some strange shape atop you!

You scream in surprise and the dark shape screeched in response falling away from you!

Scrambling for space you collide with the head of your bed with a solid thunk just as the door slammed open admitting your mother-in-law, Empress Gabriella of Gyphonia armed with steel covered talons and an oil lamp. Her eye's moving around the room Empress Gabriella barked out, "Pearl? Gilda? Are you okay, I heard screaming." Behind the Empress, you could spot at least two Knights of the Order behind her armed with blade and lamps as well.

Wait, Gilda?

Your gaze trailed to the other side of the bed where your assailant of the night had fallen to see it was your little sister-in-law tangled in your sheets and struggling to break free from the fabric. The fabric seemed to be winning until with a wince at the sharp rip that came from Gilda using her talons on the sheets to free herself, she stopped in her thrashing blinking quite owlishly at her mother.

"Momma!" Gilda chirped in response bouncing off the bed into the matron in a ball of fluff and down. "Pearl was in trouble and I knew you and Papa could beat that meanie shadow so I could too and I came to help Pearl-but-then-she-screamed-when-I-tried-and-you-came-to-help-now-we-can-beat-up-the-shadows-together!"

Your ears flick at trying to parse through the rapid-fire words coming from the excitable chick while Empress Gabriella sighed with a smile before dismissing the knights with a flick of her wing, then scooped her chick up in one talon while walking towards your bed. "I see my brave little lioness, now why don't we check up on our fair damsel hm?"

A flush rushed over your cheeks as you drew your covers up, "I'm fine Emp-"

"Bah! Pearl I've told you once, I've told you a hundred times, you can call me by my name if you want. None of that Empress nonsense, not with family." Empress Gabriella said sitting beside you, Gilda squirmed out from her mother's claws and pushed her head against yours.

"It's okay Pearl, Momma and I'll protect you!" Gilda said then squirmed in between your legs to rest against your belly. Your snout scrunched at the invasion of privacy before sighing as Gilda always does this, what was surprising was when Empress Gabriella did much the same wrapping a wing around the two of you!

"E-Empre-"

"Pearl."

"G-Gabriella…"

"My little lioness is right, we'll keep you safe so rest easy." The Empress said softly her talon came up to gently pet between your ears and through your mane. Gilda meanwhile had already started to purr as she kept watch with drooping eyes.

"How did you?" You started to ask shame running through your body at how weak you were.

"You're not the only one with bad dreams, you're not alone." Empress, no Gabriella said to you softly, "We'll still be here in the morning."

You hate how childish you sound when you asked, "Promise?"

Gabriella nodded her head, "Promise."

You knew that come cold or shadow, fire or steam, magic or steel that Gabriella, your mother would still be there in the morning. You settled in a sandwich between griffons and despite how cramped it was you couldn't have been cozier as you drifted off to sleep. When you dreamed once more, it was not to shadows and the overbearing mask instead it was to a high hill with bright sun and green fields as your family rested with a picnic on a fine summer's day.

End Scene

Hope it was fun to read at least, I rather liked the idea of Baby Gilda being told tales of how things went about and trying to act out as those big name heroes like her Momma and Papa and Grandmaster Hardbeak!

Ey~~ Thanks! Nice omake! poor pearl... but she has a family now!

Also, @Questor , since it seems you forgot to tag QM for it!

Although, thinking about it, I believe I have found a school of magic that might be applicable for Griffons. Alchemy
alchemy is just chemistry with magical reagents, so it should? work out for us under a subsect of chemistry. And its not like we don't have magic, just very little. so hopefully, we'll be able to work out some alchemy. ANd it has been brought up before, but I don't think we're far enough into chemistry or have the ability to work with magical parts yet. Especially since we'd probably be going into it blind... unless theres some group out there with experience. Was it zebrica that had alchemy...?

Damn. I am really behind,, will no longer talk lol.
Zebrica, shamanistic and voodoo, with alchemy in the mix . And as for our relationships with the Yaks, I honestly feel bad for them. The way I see it, and forgive me if I am wrong, but with their current struggles with either settling down or continuing their nomadic ways, and the giant pile of Anti magic material they are sitting on, their future is one filled with civil strife and potential exploitation. I'd even go so far as to say that civil conflict between the clans is inevitable.

I still want to believe they don't want to go into civil war. I've said it before, but most of them know just how terrible war is. With our help with development, hopefully they'll take to some modern conveniences. The only real question is, will one clan decide they want to be the top yak, or if they'll all come together to face the troubles we'e basically been fighting off for/with them.

Don't they already have conflict between and within their tribes? We need some way to let them unite peacefully, hopefully without destroying one of the clans...
Or we could just go the default of letting them do their own thing (collapse into unification civil war) and do what Garrick does best (absorb old enemy lands into the empire).

Like, its really difficult to decide what to do with em. We can't quite interfere since then it'd seem like we're taking one side in thier internal conflict. And we can't not interfere, since then they'd start eating themseves from the inside out. although, given our recent interference, it seems the modernists will probably have a much larger sway now.

The absorb plan may or may not work, since they may blame us for their conflict, if it does happen. Don't want it to, but it may blow that way.

The way I see it, they only really have three options: Unification( A united, strong power that can evolve with time), Intergration (Being integrated in to the greater whole of Gryphonia, as subjects or as a protectate), or Destruction( mass civil war and the total annhilation of their way of life and them as a species.) Why? Ahem.

Let me explain:

1. The Yaks are stubborn, almost dwarvishly so, and appear to oppose any real change to their way of life, at least the elder generations do. With the introduction of new ideas by us and the outside world, The Yaks stand at a crossroads, and either way will lead to strife and conflict.
2. Yaks are traditionally aggressive, and will seek to establish their dominance over one another. Such nature can only lead to conflict, and while conflict between one or two clans is nothing special, the whole of Yakdom is being affected by the change. Eventually, either someone will Unite them by establishing their dominance or a council of elders, or they will start to pick sides.
3. The Yak Homeland is wide open plains, with few natural barriers such as mountains or forests. This is both a strength and a major weakness. Strength: The Yaks are Shock Cavalry extraordinaire, and can destroy much more numerous foes in powerful charges. Weakness: A determined and unstopabble foe like Sombra, or a foe with mass amounts of numbers, or Gryphonia, can grind them into dust given time.
So, in conclusion, conflict is inevitable, though we might be able to stem its flow.

alchemy is just chemistry with magical reagents, so it should? work out for us under a subsect of chemistry.
That and with we do have Crystal Ponies (+ maybe some Neighponies allies). Through them, our Empire might get decent access to Alchemy.

Speaking off didn't Crystal Ponies have their own "unique" magic? I mean my speculation it might be dual-nature 'crystal' and 'love':
•crystal symbolically associated as "warm ice" with superb reflecting abilities giving them a measure of resistance to cold and snow
•love the thing that powers Crystal Heart and is the "bounds", we share with each other, our will to protect and help each other, and more

I mean it is sorta-kinda good? Through their magic of "crystal bodies" they physically manifest love in nigh-all its forms as warmth and light that feeds back into Crystal Heart, amplifying its power and in release Crystal pony bodies absorbs/reflects the energy creating something like a "feedback-loop" thus amplifying their power and Crystal Hearts power. A loop that produces more energy. Huh. Guess we found something like a perpetual motion machine

Very sweet! +10 to a roll!

I figured we'd be finding out about their magic once they weren't still super traumatized. Hopefully we'll get some more magic research options once that happens.

I asked about it some time ago. If I remember right (confirmation from anyone who still remembers would be appreciated) Sombra kind of "downloaded" all knowledge about magic from the minds of his slaves, and left them with nothing.

Basically the freed ponies need to rediscover nearly everything about their magic from scratch.

Hopefully a few books with usefull knowledge survived. (Other than "The Book")

Other than their magic being mostly focused on growing and manipulating crystals (and really, the crystal buildings made it kind of obvious) i'm not sure what else they might be able to do.

... just thinking, you know what would be really nice to see in the future? If the ponies discovered how to create a second crystal heart, and then gifted it to the gryphons/to the emperor.

About alchemy, that's certainly something we'd really find useful, as alchemy/potioncraft is basically Muggle's magic (as long as it doesn't require active use of magic in the process), but it would be incredibly hard to develop starting from scratch, as it would require an incredible amount of experimentation. If we ever meet the zebras we'll certainly want to get their knowledge about it

Sounds like a new research tech tree then. Excellent.
Crystal growing sounds like it might be useful for industry. Obviously creating buildings would be one use, but depending on the properties of the crystal they might be able to do stuff with creating mirrors, focuses for lasers, railroad tracks, instant fortifications (combined with the DDogs we'd be unstoppable on defense!), and of course jewelry.

Turn 20 Rumor Mill
No Negotiation with Slavers: After several days of negotiations in Gryphus Peak, Olive Branch, the Maretonian plenipotentiary, is sent back to his homeland, having been flatly told that the monetary demands for the return of the Empire's citizens will not be met. Reactions to this news across the Empire are mixed. The Crystal Ponies wholeheartedly approve of this action, taking to the streets of the Crystal City and settlements across the Empire to show their opposition to the Maretonian institution of slavery, and voicing their approval of the lack of negotiations with slaveholders. The loved ones of the enslaved citizens are less approving. Though many understand the reasoning behind the decision, it does little to soften the blow. Reassurances that their loved ones are alive and will be returned eventually are small comforts.

The Broken Chain, a symbol of the numerous abolitionist, anti-slavery groups that have risen in the wake of the ongoing Maretonian Hostage Crisis.

Most other Imperial citizens are split down the middle in their opinions on the matter. Some espouse the "no negotiation" line, others call for compromise and hold out hope for a peaceful solution. Few blame their leadership, laying the fault of the situation squarely at the feet of the Maretonians who refuse to return their comrades. The Neighponese, having conducted similar negotiations in hopes of freeing their own captured people's to a similarly unsatisfactory result, are as upset over the whole thing as their Griffon and Diamond Dogs allies, if not moreso. None know exactly what the future holds and how this crisis will play out, but all eyes are upon the leaders of Maretonia, Neighpon and Gryphus, their subjects wondering how it will all play out.

The Crystal Kingdom Resurgent: A lavish ceremony and festive celebration in the Crystal City marks the protectorate's second anniversary, and the completion of the former-Empire's reconstruction via the Bronzeclaw Plan. Frida Bronzeclaw herself is heralded as a hero by the Crystal City's inhabitants, as roads once cluttered with debris are now bustling with activity as cartloads of goods pass in and out of the city, an actual Crystal economy taking shape for the first time in living memory. Food, housing and jobs are now available for all of the city's inhabitants, and Consul Rook and the Crystal Assembly are now actually collecting taxes and dispensing funds instead of simply coordinating volunteers and the distribution of relief aid.

Frozen tundra, through the investment and application of Griffonian knowledge and technology, has been transformed into tractable farmland, producing wheat by the bushel, and shipments of ore from mines dug by Sombra and rebuilt by Diamond Dogs is exported to the Imperial heartland for smelting and shaping in the furnace of Gryphus' industry. While the protectorate still has a long way to go before it can rival the economic output of even a single province of the wider Empire, it is on its way there, and its inhabitants know who to thank for such improvement.

The Age of Steam: Steam fever has swept the nation. Dozens of steam engines make their way from the workshops of engineers and artisans to lumber, cloth and grinding mills across Gryphus, and rumors persist of the legendary Archimedes having produced a form of steam-powered transport capable of moving large amounts of goods from one place to another without need for large teams of laborers. All these new inventions improving the lives of so many in such a short span of time has resulted in a shift in the national zeitgeist, as citizens begin to imagine a future ruled by technology. Authors, bards and poets who once wove tales of legends of the past now tell tales of a future filled with fantastical machines and strange lands waiting to be discovered by brave explorers.

An artist's depiction of a hypothesized "Iron Pony", a Golem-like automaton.

Tales of Griffon ingenuity reach as far as Neighpon and Yakyakistan, where prominent figures express interest in acquiring such technologies and technical improvements for themselves. Some dare to say that a whole new epoch of history has been ushered in by these machines.

-Crystals wrapped up, Crystals wrapped up. We built a protectorate.
-Oh ancestors, imagine a black steel iron pony, Sombra wanted an army of automatons, we have the know how to make it happen.

Age: 46

Titles: Emperor of Gryphus, King of Griffonia, Inheritor of the Imperial House of Gryphus, The Unifier, Great Winged Alpha, The Lightbringer

Description: Before your wife got her talons on you, you were a fairly typical example of the Griffon species. An unmistakably masculine build, a strong, prominent beak, feathers and fur that seem to be perpetually well-groomed, and a pair of piercing amber eyes hiding a fierce intelligence. Not anymore though. Oh, you still have all those qualities, they're just overshadowed by the massive amount of muscle you've put on since you started your wife's "enhanced training regimen". Yak Clans
Raw Hides: 7/10 (Friendly Neighbor)
River Walkers: 7/10 (Friendly Neighbor)
Broken Horns: 7/10 (Friendly Neighbor)
Thunder Warriors: 7/10 (Friendly Neighbor)

Persons of Interest

???: A friendly and strangely casual Griffon female you met at your inaugural ball. Despite having a wonderful evening chatting with her, you never got her name.

Garibaldi Talonuelli: Formerly the Duke of Wingbardy, now the Grand Duke of Wingbardy, Talonuelli is a beloved public figure in his home province and an experienced administrator. After saving his city and people from Brochard's attempted invasion and negotiating his province's vassalage over a few drinks, you'd like to think you can count him among your friends.

Federico Montefeathertro: Duke of the (former) City-State of Urbirdo, and your Father-in Law. He might just be the friendliest of the former Feathersians, having agreed to back you and your kingdom without question or condition during the Brochard Crisis, and hiring a mercenary outfit as a belated wedding gift. You're reasonably certain he likes you, as much as In-Laws can like each other anyway.

Koryū Ryuō: The draconic Emperor of the Island Kingdom of Neighpon. Having agreed to assist you in the war against the Shadow King and making fast friends with your adoptive daughter, you consider him a decent fellow who you can trust to keep his word, and a valuable ally against any destructive forces the world can throw at you.

Minamoto Tadakatsu: Shogun of Neighpon. Born to peasant farmers, he's more than earned his place as the most powerful Samurai amongst the Qilin. After he lead the Neighponese contingent during the Invasion of the Crystal Empire and kindly instructed you in the myriad varieties and intricacies of tea on the campaign trail, you've come to respect the more-than-century-old leader.

Konrad Hardbeak, "The Kingslayer": Grandmaster of the Knights Lion and Hero of the Empire. Beheaded Brochard the pretender, crippled Sombra the shadow king twice over, and received the very first Imperial Medal of Honor. Despite it all, he is surprisingly humble, insisting in vain that he was, and is, merely doing his duty to the Empire, and to you. He is the very model of an Imperial Knight.
