Alright. Looks like we need to tech up into the Industrial age and start exporting Romantic Paternalism to the peoples of the world. If anyone gets the reference...

Would be nice to give active support to the Railroads, would be a good way to get potential battlemages for our army, scientists for magic, and agricultural experts.

But they're modeled after ponies... not sure if wings would work for a machine. Jetpack griffon automatons?
Steampunk can usually do wings, don't worry about it. Jetpack would be cool though.

Oh yesss,oh yesss!!! The reaction was better than I could have hoped for. It's a shame about their loved ones, buts it's a small price to pay fo the strengthening of our alliances. And Maretonian Hostage Situation? I could not have worded it my self.

As for rest?

Its time we teach them the error of holding our citizens hostage.

Ah! Obviously, in @Questor's infinite wisdom, we have been gifted with hints from the heavens themselves!

The hostages must be freed--they are not slaves, not commodities, never property! They are our people! Prisoners taken by a nation with less than neutral standing with the rest of the known word!

The Crystal Protectorate grows! In time, they will become a self-sustaining part of our sprawling empire!

Machines, Industry, and Technology (MIT for short) all surge in growth as well! This is an era of prosperity, one we must share with the peoples of the earth!
...

So obviously, the hidden message is that we need to have the Crystal Ponies rediscover their crystal magic, combine it with our steam technology to make crystalline pony automatons, who have no need of food nor-- well, they would need water. These BEASTS of power will aid us (along with tactical jetpacks for momentary boosts of speed) in forcing Maretonia's decadent nobility to its knees, and shatter their misconceptions of the reality of the world!
For the Emperor! For the People! For the Blood, Sweat, and Tears that have brought us to this day!

I support the building of steampunk styles. (dieselpunk for the future.)
No black, liquid gold unfortunately. :(

Let's go! Let's go! Full Steam Ahead! We're off to our Industrial Revolution!~
Got a problem that can't just be fixed, not to worry we've got the solution!~
Future's bright and our time is now, flying into the future perched upon the prow!~
So many wonders to make and little time to wait, there for the taking with a little know-how!~

I don't know why, but I imagined Archimedes or some of our smart birds singing a little heart song ditty about the wonders of steel, steam, and gunpowder.

Going into a direct conflict would be foolish. Doing deniable-ish things like supporting separatists and abolitionist groups could force them to come at us however...
Definitely want to look into our spies, who are apparently all just 007 clones, rescuing our captured peoples. Preferably including the Neighponese, that political capital we'd get from it would be quite nice. Though it might be prudent to work with Neighponese illusionists to make it as effective a rescue as possible, while also making it ever more common for our peoples to work together, something definitely worth doing.

Okay. We need to deal with the pirates immediately.

It's all well and good to take a stand, but we need to be showing our people results.

If we had decided to pay the ransom, I would suggest subverting the pirates and turning them on the Maretonians, but that would necessitate deniability. Which means no bragging. So, out and out destruction it is.

The question is whether we use our intrigue and/or diplo to support that action or them to support the Abolitionist movement.

*edit*
I really like the idea of working with the Neighponese to spirit away our stolen people.
And it would be proof of our worth to the Abolitionists while also kicking in the metaphorical teeth of the nobility.

Yes, especially considering most of our spies are either A. Griffons B. Crystal Ponies C. Diamond Dogs, all of whom would stick out like a sore thumb in Maretonia.

No my friend, your think too small. Just picture this:

Crystal Automatons firing lightning and Crystal magic, while lines upon lines of griffons and ponies bring Tesla rifles and SteamWalkers to bear, and armored juggernauts provide artillery support, against Maretonias slave armies. Dreadnoughts laughing off libertalia pirate attacks. Assembly lines for Chainsaw Blades.

Diplomacy to keep their eyes on one hand, and blind to the knife behind our back. We need to get an abolitionist group to either meet us directly, or Ravensburg to meet them. We need to know how much support they have and how far they are in their fight. Then we can talk about funding.

Wasn't it mentioned that the armies of Maretonia are mainly professional soldiers/mercs? They also have mages. That makes it even cooler, with our well-equipped soldiers running over their so-called elites!

Hmmm. A mass liberation would probably be enough to get them to start waring with us, at least informally.

We should start on that next line of defenses as well.

@Questor, quick question. Have our spies got a general ideas of Maretonias military capabilities compared to ours? Like, how loyal are they, what are their standards, how do they fight?

Right, we need a wall of watch towers on our borders, fortify our cities and settlements near their border. But not in a immediately obvious way. When war comes, let it be when we are prepared.

Wait, they use mostly Mercs? Well shit this just got a lot easier.
From our first encounter:
Militarily, Maretonia is both stronger and weaker than Gryphus. Weaker in that they have a smaller army (which ranges in quality from Knights to ragtag mercenaries and conscripted slave soldiers) but stronger in that they have access to powerful magics, from Pegasi weather manipulation to all manner of combat spells cast by Unicorn battle-mages.
So a few slave soldiers, but also mercs and knights, with unicorn/pegasi support.

So in that case. Round 3 here it comes.
Yes. Except in the frozen wasteland of the Crystal Empire, a terrain armies do poorly in without extensive preparations. Triply so when two thirds of your population can not fly...

...Except we have that problem now actually. Ah well, natural diggers are worth it.
What?
Oh right, the Crystals. Ehh... No, they really aren't yet. Anything they can do griffons can do but better.
