After rereading the upadate thanks to comentary about the queen lying i am still unsure if that is fully the case. The upadte is not actully all that clear on who our diplomats were mostly communicating with. Was it their diplomatic staff or the queen her self that was lying and trying to stonewall us? The only defenite thing i got about the queen from the upadte is that she wants this resolved quickly and peacefully and the nobles are using the issue to try to undermine her.

[X] Bear Any Burden

I strongly disagree with the people who want to "burn Maretonia to the ground", while completely forgetting that far more innocents would suffer from war than are currently enslaved.
The average Maretonian soldier isn't a noble who owns slaves, yet they'd be the ones who would pay with their life. The average earth pony slave did nothing wrong, yet they'd be the ones worked to exhaustion.
Don't dehumanize/deponify your enemies just because they were raised to think of slavery as normal. They're still people.
War, war never changes. So let's not unleash that horror unless we absolutely have to.

I fully support intrigue actions to assassinate the slave-holders, though, preferably by having Ravensburg's agents swap with a slave before killing their 'masters' so that we have plausible deniability. As a bonus, the same nobles probably include unicorn battle-mages which we would eliminate before Maretonia could field them against us.

I'm not advocating to burn Maretonia to the ground or anything, but the whole idea of "let's not unleash that horror unless we absolutely have to" is just not reasonable. There are so many things worse than war, and slavery is one of them. Every year we wait is a year that slaves get raped by their masters, people get sold into slavery, people get born into slavery, families get separated as they are sold to different owners. Ending this as fast as possible should be the priority, so war should be our first choice, not our last. Your alternatives won't work. If you assassinate slave owners then their heirs will simply inherit the "property." And I don't think Maretonia will be willing to end slavery if we ask through diplomacy.

Yes, innocent people will die in the process. But so what? It's not like everyone will be living happily in Maretonia if we do nothing. So we should fight honorably in that we should not allow our soldiers to pillage or rape but anything needed to win the war is justifiable. Maybe that means destroying their civilian infrastructure and cutting off supplies to the point of causing famine. Again, that would kill many innocent people, but it will allow us to win. Total war is what works, and it's better to do a lot of damage and win than to lose. It's better to put a full effort in and win than to half-ass it and either drag the war out before winning or lose. Remember, if we do not fix this, slavery could continue in Maretonia potentially for centuries.

While the cost might be heavy, I think this war is very winnable. Maretonia's military might be strong and their population might be large, but we have better technology and it'll be 3 nations against one. If you want to induce infighting and disunity first then that just means we need to strike their capital first and then move on to the nobles' territory once there's no one to guide them.

[X] Pay Any Cost

Step 1: Get the citizens back.

Step 2: Send in the wetwork crews to get the money back. With interest.

Step 3: Use the money to fund the abolitionists.

[X] Bear Any Burden

I'm tepted to suggest sending only Olive Branch's head home while the rest of him stays.

[X] Avoid direct total war and such, instead we arrange for a few of the leading Nobles who are at odds with us to have "incidents" (Raven-burg eat your heart out!) . Typically something that will kill or Maim them and "kill" all their slaves as their properties are burned to the ground (We destroy the properties and leave dummy bodies to hide the fact we freed the slaves and took them with us).
Morally grey/black? Oh yes absolutely!
But I am out of S**ts to give at this point (We just finished with Sombra and then this mess occurs... I say we deal with this in a manner that won't make us look like Sombra (total war) but still cripples Maretonia and makes it apparent that Slavery=Maiming/Death from "Insurgent factions".

  1. "New Options Unlocked." indicates that the actions we'll take to deal with Maretania will be part of next turn's vote.
  2. Ruthless... I'm grudgingly impressed. Not sure whether I'd approve, but unless we fail the intrigue action, this would make it nearly impossible to connect the deaths with us.
  3. We can't fabricate 'dummy bodies', so we'd have to use actual griffin/Qilin/... corpses. While we could probably find enough people on their deathbed who'd agree, smuggling those corpses into Maretania would be difficult.
  4. "Insurgent factions" might not actually be the ones who would be blamed. After all, we'd be disposing of political enemies of their queen. This might spark a civil war...

How's the search for Lady Nightingale going? Any turn now, right? Since we definitely remember that she stole our treasury and is raising the secret heir to half our kingdom.
as far as I'm concerned she got away clean and that is the end of that. I mean yeah Quester said that would be a plot thread we'd pick up again on some day but at this point it was so long ago and the fact that we seem to have to deal with a new slaving empire to the south every few years that I honestly suspect that everyone will die of old age before the reunion has a chance to happen. Besides she and her goons fled west and we keep getting called south to deal with the new southern threat of the week. Plus compared to what we have to deal with lately her crimes seem rather small seeing how it seems all she did was convince the old king that everyone was against him, had him rush forward in a all or nothing charge that let us beat him in a single battle, then while the body was still warm took his money and fled west.

Dickish yes, but compared to the mad king Sombra who enslaved and froze his kingdom and planned to do the same to us and now a pirate bastion and another slaving empire which has enslaved some of our people her crimes seem rather petty in comparison.

Well it seems like where taking the burden, and it seemd like we are all pretty agreed on a plan, intrigue them into hell and back while exterminating the pirate cove, all while expanding our army and building defenses on the southern border.

Time for peregrine line 2: electric boogaloo. Now featuring ocean wall in the form of a naval blockade!

@Questor If we end up making a new defense line to the south of the Crystal Protectorate, can the same option be used to mothball the Peregrine line since we would basically be moving the garrison further south and all?

Sure, sure, "we don't forget".

That's a very reasonable attitude, and I share it. I was just pointing out that Pittauro's line about how "we never forget" is a lie.

I think it's a bit of an unfair comparison.

We tried to capture her, we failed, and then we never got the chance to act in that direction again. Not that we probably would have seeing how many problems and threats we got to deal with shortly after that.

Also she TECHNICALLY didn't steal from us, but from Brochard.

Personally I think she was a changeling.

She killed two birds with a stone, assuring the worst ruler (one whose kingdom would have been devoid of love) died, and getting some riches for her hive.

Edit: basically it's not really that we "forgot" about her, but more like " there was nothing else we could do at the time"

Honestly, Bear Any Burden feels like the better of two options, and I'm glad it got taken.

We may not be able to attack the Maretonians directly, but giving in to them wouldn't help either. After all, the nobles might have given our people back in with the first option, but that wouldn't mean they'd stop taking people away.

Especially with the insolence shown to us by the diplomats, and disapproval of the general population.

The problem with the going to war is that we need to move our boarder defense line to Maretonia, we need roads, or railways, a harbor within the boarders just to handle the logistics of troop movement and defense. The benefit of this for the crystal empire is that all the roads and railways can allow for more ease of movement within their territory, possibly for colonization and reclaiming efforts.

The harbor can act as a staging ground for our own ships and allies, Its a possible city in later years.

Well, all I can say at this point is, I got omake ideas I really feel like writing right now.

Thanks for continuing to make a wonderful quest, questor. Never a dull moment.

It is cool that our start to industrialing was from steam pumps for mining and furnaces, rather than how humanity started it through textiles and food.
I migh not know what I am talking about though.

Also, I wonder if we can build a federation one day. Take the time over decades to make a federation of our local area and Neighpon.
