Get the Heart!

The fact he hasn't either corrupted or smashed the thing even while apparently still fearing it, means that Sombra hasn't been able to do that!
That means the thing is still running in some form - if only by being highly resistant to be taken over, if not outright still working on leftover love/waiting on a love collection mode to start blasting the whole Empire with its AOE.

I'd say the door fits the typical methods of Sombra. A magic lock in a Empire of primarily non-magic users (I hold to the theory that Crystal Ponies are descendants of Earth Ponies whose connection to the ground beneath their hooves changed them), craved with symbols to inspire fear and having several layers of traps just encase.

Of course we're going to open it, if Sombra wants the door shut there must be something in there that he's terrified of.

Whatever is in there can hopefully help us defeat sombra. though the gargoyle above which made the guide scream in terror does not bode well for this. So something to take into account here do we want to open it now and possible fight a god knows what or try to defeat sombra and hope with him gone that gargoyle thing stays stone when we open it.

Alright plan bois and girls! Have the Dogs collapse the stairwell entrance with some blasting jelly if we have it or just some old fashion work. Slow down sombero if that is viable. As for the mineral chute we should seal that off as well as I doubt trying to send a few no name dogs up unarmored and unequiped to poke their nose out would just end in tears. Once that is done we should get that vault open right quick, think we can blast it open? I don't recall what would get the vault open other than magic being shot at it or learning to face your fear.

Or he might be too busy fighting to notice and the rest of our troops have to fight the whole battle themselves. Better to bypass it and come back later when we have the perimeter secured and plenty of time to examine it.
Whatever is in this vault is important to Sombra. Also the whole reason we came down here was to find whatever it is that Sombra is scared of so we can use it against him. The Army up top is only meant to hold. Also we made it so it is impossible for Sombra not to realize we are down here and he will not want us near the vault so he either comes down here where we have all the people equipped to kill him or he doesn't and we get the item or person he is scared of.

Why would you want to destroy the stairs they are our literal pathway to the next level of these catacombs?

think that might be The Nightmare Door
might need will save for it

if i remember the show the hearts is on the bottom floor
are we on the bottom

Sombra is a master of evil. If there is something that can scare him and not be destroyed by him then he will build the most obvious evil look mechanism to hide it. Most who see it are either going to be greedy and get killed before they can open it or they are going to bypass it because the obvious evil door has something bad behind it. Unforntaly for him we have ways to break the door and an army both topside kicking down his front door and we have an elite strike force that just killed all of his remaining security down here.

[] Plan: Safe-cracking safely: Our goals are to open the vault and then either A: retreat back to our army in the worst case, or B: continue onward, toward the tower where Sombra keeps his soul orb.
-[] Our forces should be divided into three parts:
--[] Force A shall go to the "Feeding Pen" and prepare for receiving a wave assault - piling loose stone and other miscellaneous resources like troll bodies to make makeshift barricades. If they can detach some troops before the enemy arrives, they should also prepare secondary defenses in the Troll Pen. When the enemy attacks, they are to hold each room until it becomes unfeasible and then retreat to the next one., culminating in them holding the Entrance Chamber. If the fighting reaches the Entrance Chamber, Force B must either send reinforcements, or outright evacuate. At least two of the Grandmasters should be part of this group to act as anti-magic killers, if not all three of them.
--[] Force B shall work as the safe-crackers. Our queen, us and (possibly) the third Grandmaster shall act as the heavy hitters against shenanigans, as well as work our heads on how to open it.
--[] Force C is less of a a force and more of a group of signalers. They are to form a loose chain of lookouts that will pass simple messages by voice signals or more important ones in person - thus keeping us informed on what is happening.

Thoughts?

while i like the idea there are a few things 1 i want hardbeak with us at all times while cracking this vault since im almost 100% positive that gargoyle is going to do something and hardbeak is a god also does sombra even have anything left to send down here besides himself at this point?

Splitting up at this point is counter-productive. If a force is coming we will hear them and it can only come from the stairway. The other paths are either behind the fighting lines under our army's control or too small for anything that could break our forces. We need the full force with us at the vault.

If we fail our Vault-opening rolls hard enough, we can't get in. Even if we succeed, there is no guarantee what we find inside will immediately do something.
If the fighting is happening right at the entrance of that chamber, we can't evacuate through the rampaging horde of slaves. We will die like Sad Pandas.

What horde of slaves those are all engaged with the army topside. If he pulls enough of them to send them down here then the army gets the boost it needs to break through to the center. The only real option is that Sombra comes down here because even if a slave army is sent they can't send enough to keep such a powerful elite strike force from being able to escape. These are not regulars these are the best soldiers and fighters from the entire army. What is behind that vault is something that Sombra fears above all else just having it gives us a major advantage during any fight against him. We have received too many hints and clues about the thing in the catacombs for it not to be useful.

Considering how Sombra is afraid of whatever is in the vault + how he's likely wondering where his arch-nemesis is at this point of time, I would expect Sombra to go Absolute Batshit and send everything absolutely not necessary to stop us getting in - and while that strategically seems like a good thing for us, tactically that means we are going to get hammered if we aren't careful with this.

We have more layers? I thought the stairs just lead to the ground floor of the castle and the catacombs were basically the basement for the whole castle. I wanted to deny Sombra the chance to bring an army down on our heads through those stairs, sides trying to get our small army up said stairs will be a pain to do as those enclosed spaces will be a murder to slough through.

If Sombra wants that door to stay closed, we naturally want it open. Unless it's a back door to Tartarus or something like that, but I doubt it.

If we were in a open field that would be a problem in a area like this the numbers don't matter because they can't use them all. With the amount of power the strike force has if it seemed like a horde was coming then we could fight our way out because we have stronger units. Also Sombra is down to the bottom of the barrel he can't take forces from the top to send to the catacombs and still have enough to hold the line. If he does send enough to overwhelm us then he loses the fight on the topside. If he only pulls enough to not get beaten then the numbers are too low to stop us. Our best bet is to dig in at the Vault and work to open it. Either we get it or Sombra wastes more assets or comes himself.

"On the other wing, the Eastern Contingent, after picking their way through a room filled wall to wall with bones...bones with teeth marks and distinctive Equine features...they find a stairwell, which their Crystal Guide states leads to the upper levels of the catacombs, just below the ground floor of the castle."

Do we have the horn we cut of sombra? Because I would expect that it might be the key to the vault

Also, do we want to send stealth dogs up the shoot. And do any of our other races fit, or have magic that might let them fit.
