That, and discord doesn't seem the type to commit genocide.

More that death is not his preferred method of causing Chaos. He does appear complacent though.

Like in one of the Brochard omakes, Discord's creations were sent ( or allowed) to ravage the Griffins' Knightly Orders, or those two Griffins in the omake, You!?, turned into paper. I don't think they returned to being flesh and bone after Discord's defeat.

Or even in cannon, where Discord let's Tirek rip the magic from people which surely can't be good for the young or elderly.

Idk having a population with a few million makes armies in the size of tens of thousands reasonable. Like having our current army, while the population is under a million seems risky to the genetic potential of future Griffins.

It makes sense. Back then, it took many dozens of workers to support one soldier, didn't it? The blacksmith, farmers, doctors, quartermasters, menial workers and so on. A population of 100,000 having an army of 10,000 fulltime would mean 90,0000 doing others things while those 10,000 need training, equipment, food, and can't really have a second job to support the economy.

And for genetics, I don't know if griffins when through a genetic bottleneck like humanity. there are hundreds of variables in genetic viability of populations, but it is a strange, awkward topic I am not going to jump into.

If we ever get to the point were discord is willingly released and we find out the ponies have released discord I feel that such an act will cause more then a few diplomatic strained relationships... with a lot of people

Vote seems pretty clear. Will have the Exploration Interlude out soon.

Name: Garrick Golden-Feather

Age: 37

Titles: Emperor of Gryphus, King of Griffonia, Inheritor of the Imperial House of Gryphus, The Unifier, Great Winged Alpha

Description: At first glance, you seem like a pretty average example of the Griffon race. Head of an eagle, body of a winged lion, standing perhaps a hair taller than most other quadrupedal species. It's not until one looks closer that they see the things that distinguish you from a crowd. An unmistakably masculine build, a strong, prominent beak, feathers and fur that seem to be perpetually well-groomed, and a pair of piercing amber eyes hiding a fierce intelligence. But you're no peacock, only known for your good looks; your talons are razor sharp, and though you are not as strong as your wife, you are still an apex predator, and your musculature reflects that. Your wife's workout regimen has also improved your physique, cords of taut muscle now visible across your body.

Diplomatic Relations

Persons of Interest

???: A friendly and strangely casual Griffon female you met at your inaugural ball. Despite having a wonderful evening chatting with her, you never got her name.

Garibaldi Talonuelli: Formerly the Duke of Wingbardy, now the Archduke of Wingbardy, Talonuelli is a beloved public figure in his home province and an experienced administrator. After saving his city and people from Brochard's attempted invasion and negotiating his province's vassalage over a few drinks, you'd like to think you can count him among your friends.

Federico Montefeathertro: Duke of the (former) City-State of Urbirdo, and your Father-in Law. He might just be the friendliest of the former Feathersians, having agreed to back you and your kingdom without question or condition during the Brochard Crisis, and hiring a mercenary outfit as a belated wedding gift. You're reasonably certain he likes you, as much as In-Laws can like each other anyway.

The Cold West
Your expedition returns sooner than expected, only a month after they had departed. Their report does a great deal to explain why.

While the lands immediately beyond the Black Cliffs of Aquileia are similar in terrain and appearance to much of the lands of Gryphus, past a certain point the trees give way to vast arid plains, with little flora beyond grasses, wildflowers and the occasional shrub, only the occasional mountain or hill breaking up the monotony.

The lack of trees to cut down forced your scouting party to rely entirely on the stocks of firewood they had brought with them. Firewood which was consumed at a rapid pace, as the lands to the West are just as cold, if not even colder, than your own.

They are also inhabited.

They call themselves Yaks. They're big, strong, and completely ground-bound. They appear to be a largely nomadic society, moving from place to place, feeding upon what plant life there is to be found in the freezing lands they call home.

The aspiring diplomats and interpreters amongst the expedition attempted communication with members of a few of the roving bands that they stumbled upon.

(First Impressions: 57+10(First Contact Protocols)=67)

The Yaks responded cautiously. They didn't seem too sure what to make of your emissaries. They'd clearly never seen a Griffon before, but they didn't respond with hostility. Your emissaries didn't have much time to communicate before they and the nomads were forced to part ways, but they managed to gather that these lands are divided between numerous different clans or tribes, and that they don't seem to be aware of any other sapient races.

They also managed to gather some information about the lands even further west. Despite what they had seen themselves, the Yaks assured them that there were rivers, lakes, and pockets of forest scattered about infrequently, though control of these areas is apparently heavily contested between numerous clans. And while the Winter lasts most of the year here, it does briefly give way to a more bearable Spring and Summer.

The Yaks repeatedly expressed interest in the steel tools and armor that your scouts carried, and judging by their cloth armor and crude iron tools, they appear to lack the technology and mineral wealth that you possess, though your scouts state that they had no way of knowing if the few Yaks they encountered were indicative of the greater population.

The scouting expedition has given you much to think about. Now you know you have neighbors, a whole different species just beyond the Western Border. Neighbors that might be open to trade...or interested in raiding your territory to get what they want. This will make things interesting.

Discovered Yakyakistan, Contact made with ???? Clan.

Or both

Both is usually the answer, especially with nomads. They can buy from you and then either turn around and attack you a generation down the line or start subjegating their peers with their superior weapons, create a horde and then attack you.

Hmm natural long distance travelers, hardy survivors of the local foliage (which isn't a lot apparently) and a burgeoning, if not vibrant, culture.

These folks will be wonderful new vassals of our empire, once we show them the light of Gryphus of course.

You get more bees with honey than salt water and all that.

Of course this doesn't preclude the occasional raiding band coming down from their lands to try their luck at stealing some of our things, but that just means that we have to beef up border security a bit now that we know that there are people out there to poke at them.

The only downside to this that I can see is that there is no central governing body of the Yak people, each one content to travel in clans similar to the Mongol hordes pre-Gengis Kahn. Of course we can use this to our advantage, swallowing up the Yaks one tribe at a time through either diplomatic overtures or straight up beating the shit out of them until they get the message.

This is assuming that we even want the land to begin with. I suppose we won't know until we get some diamond dogs here to dig around a bit and see if anything of worth is hiding underground.

Well as far as weve seen its all barren waste land and the only few hospitable spots are the most heavy fought over so going east really has no benefit for us other then mabye subjugating the yaks while letting them keep their territory over the mountains. Also lets not forget that it will be very difficult for them to attack us as they will have to pass over the Black Cliffs of Aquileia which i would assume would be very hard for a ground based species to do.

Clans, mountains, nomads and that kind of armor ...

Ok, I'm the only one who thinks that the Yaks are based on the Huns / Mongols? Because they certainly share some similarities.
