So... the tongs went as expected.

Seriously, as I stated before, they were a low-hanging fruit idea, if it was possible, someone would have done it.

No, but Eike is about to be whisked off to Altdorf for a decade or more instead of learning finance.

I am pretty sure finance is part of the Gold college curiculum

On another note, this spoiler may have unduly influenced my perception, so I'll abstain from voting.

As for the affinity thing: from what Boney had said it seems pretty rare to genuinely lean towards one wind in particular before you even start learning magic, and regardless you aren't locked into one path until you get an arcane mark.

That is, even Mathilde at the beginning of the story technically could have dropped everything and started over in another college.

She can go wherever she wants.
We should invite her to the Duckling Club social. It'll be the last one, but there she gets to meet more wizards of differing colleges than pretty much anyone else would before being sent to Altdorf.

So I'm going to make the argument that the conversation in the spoilers is not actually meta-knowledge.

If BoneyM didn't want us to know, they would not have left the results public, or have the name spell it out in detail.

BoneyM just left it out there for us to find or not to find.

@Garlak Is just the part of Mathy's brain that did a quick check on habit.

And because the thread found it, so did Mathy.

so it's not meta knowledge for it to effect your vote (if it does)

Yeah, Boney had pointed out back in 2019 that if it was simple, it would already have been done. The tongs lobby's case was that we have unusually good Windsight and unusually strong theoretical knowledge about using a Wind to manipulate a different kind of energy, so it was possible that Mathilde would be able to succeed where others had failed due to advantages they lacked.

Turns out the answer is no, which a lot of people anticipated, but it was worth checking to see if we had any eggs, because boy would it have been exciting if the answer was yes.

It was all that plus haveing the Liber Mortis and as good a theoretical understanding of necromancy as anyone not a necromancer has ever had. More than worth 1 AP to check.

I really hope the halfing option wins less racism in the empire is always good.

She could also become a shallian priestess, even if that would lead to some weird priorities for the EIC in the future.
Otherwise on the magic front Gold or Celestial college would probably be for the best.

Back to the current vote, I don't think Kazrik and Edda are a good combination. Either are fine, but they seem to me like they have too much overlap and too little contrast to be worth two slots. And seeing the most recent developments it doesn't seem like we can do one of the other cool options in the near future.

It's why I suggested one of them paired with Gotri as a representative of the Radicals. Knowing about radical subculture within dwarf culture is a valuable perspective.

So this is about whom I think would be most valuable to Eike, not who I want to see. She's not a wizard so she doesn't really need contacts on the mystical side. And besides, trying to introduce an eleven-year-old to Kragg the Grim would be cruel. Nor does she need to meet Cython and I don't think she'd get much out of the We. As for humans, well, she can meet humans anywhere.

My choices:
Belegar has a head for business and supplies. In many ways he's a Stewardship hero. Just the crumbs of his knowledge could benefit Eike enormously, not to mention that inestimable value of a king who is vaguely aware who you are. Absolutely locked in.

Kazrik is a cool dude, good at working with humans, and represents a very different side of dwarven culture.

Gotri is... RADICAL.

If only Edda were better with humans she would be my choice, but she's not.

I should probably actually vote at some point, huh.

[X] Panoramia, Hluodwica, and the Halflings

For all the valid reasons people have said but also introducing Eike to Pan sounds fun and I do think she deserves some fun on this trip. Like, I'm pretty sure the original pitch of the idea was to give her a bit of a break from Wilhelmina's expectations and the 'learn about dwarves' bit was just the excuse we were giving.

[X] Francesco, Soizic, and the Undumgi

For actually learning to work with dwarves, it may be better to get multiple point of views on humans who work with them regularly- they'd have quite a bit of advice to give, I think. Mathilde on her own might get a bit... flight school. *

[X] Kazrik and the Dwarves of Karak Azul

And on the other hand, a bunch of very dwarfy dwarves who have been cut off from the outside world for longer than the empire has existed- while also being extremely open to new trade.

[X] Belegar Ironhammer

This would mostly be a 'making connections' thing. Belegar is... not terribly representative of the average dwarf Eike may be interacting with, but knowing him is valuable in and of itself. Also it's just fun to introduce her to a king. No pressure though. :V

[X] Edda and the Cult of Valaya

For all the many valid reasons that have been given and also Edda deserves more screentime, and this may be her last chance for a while.

The We are... probably not a great idea, unfortunately. We know they're cuddly cute spooders who are the best, but introducing an eleven year old to a hive mind of giant spiders mostly sounds like a recipe for trauma induced arachnophobia.

Same general thought for Cython, but with an added 'Cython would likely have zero interest in conversing with her'.

*"Just help reclaim a lost Karak and rescue another, that's what works for me so that's my advice."

It does still sound like Mathilde has found a new method of multi-wind casting, and one that only produces small amounts of Dhar. It's a niche that normal Dhar casters wouldn't consider; you can get any effect from pure Dhar so why bother with someting more complicated and less powerful? But for the discerning caster, it enables ample flexibility and more controlled results for negligeable amounts of Dhar poisoning.

It's still a method that produces Dhar, and therefore still only of extended use to someone completely immune to Dhar poisoning. (Like Mathilde and her belt.) But you could dramatically extend your life and sanity as a dark magister using this method compared to traditional means. You'd better make full use of this unnamed method's versatility, though, because unlike Necromancy's power boost versatility is the only advantage you'll get.

I mean, we don't actually know if it's viable, or how useful the end result would be.

I really really hope we didn't just spark a civil war within the Light Order.
while I hope this:

"Come the new year, pay a visit to Wizards and Alchemists Guild in Middenheim. You may find waiting there a new and luminescent recruit for your burgeoning project."

"Thank you," you say simply.

The smile she gives in reply seems to owe nothing to friendliness. "No thanks necessary. The pleasure will be mine."

was just wizards being wizards; She at no point promised that it would be Egrimm van Horstmann that would meet us.

we might have gotten a political swap-ahroo done to us.

the fact that we had the coin on it is worrying as well.
