IIRC, according to Night's Dark Masters, warhammer vampires often have silver vulnerability, and the dwarves of Karak Eight Peaks probably warred with Strygos as well as traded with them.
Ah, in that case pikes would indeed make sense against vampire knights
I think there is a good reason to publicise this one. It's not something Mathilde needs to hide or keep as an ace in the hole, and having a reputation for both spell innovation and sharing the results would be particularly useful for her.
This spell is particularly nice as it explores part of Ulgu's thematics that the Grey College hasn't focused on much. That helps in two ways. It means that a broader range of people can successfully become Grey Magisters. It may also encourage other Magisters to explore other aspects of Ulgu.
I'm looking forward to seeing if we can build on this spell, making it more like a realm Minimap, for example having it update in real time based on what troops under your command know, rather than needing messengers. That may require things like (very) temporarily enchanted tokens to be given to unit commanders or scouts, or for the spell to be cast on the officers and scouts at the beginning of a battle/engagement.
Being Relatively Simple helps a lot for its utility, since the next freestanding illusion effect is Illusion at Fiendishly Complex.
Having it update in realtime is the really really hard part though, it has to gather information somehow, but Ulgu doesn't seem known for scrying or mind reading, though it IS in theme, theres no spells for it.
You can really tell what Teclis meant the Colleges for when you find that almost all spells at Fiendishly Complex and up are almost all directly combat relevant.
Can I convince anyone to change their votes? We are currently not interacting with any non-dwarf. Wolf is already our familiar so we will have plenty of interaction with him over the coming days/months/years anyway, even if it isn't on screen.
Uh, not quite. Prioritizing your familiar is not something you 'do later', either you keep them in mind and attend to them regularly, or you put them at a lower priority to social connections.
Which is FINE, but do recognize that instead of "we'll deal with that later."
I'm actually intrigued by Wulfhart. He's an Ulrican holy knight, so normally he should object to wizards on religious grounds, but apparently he works with ambermanlings quite well .
Ulricans IIRC, don't object to wizards on religious grounds, they just think you should use your thews instead of cheating.
Amber magic enhances your thews, so its mostly fine.
Mathilde uses thews to kill so she's a bit better off than pure casty wizards.
Did King Ironhammer really split up the forces completely by type or were those just whatever unit type was most prominent on each front?
In any case, he would have been better served with a less lopsided force distribution. Something for Mathilde to keep in mind. Especially at the Hangar, but probably also the Highways. Though I can't currently find any information on who actually we're the primary Dwarf forces at the Highways.
By the way, where did the surviving Slayers end up after finishing off the Trolls? And who lead the Thunderers into that ill-fated meat grinder?
I'd note that there are practical reasons for lopsided force distributions: familiarity of command.
So a little look into medieval style warfare...much of the leadership of professional military units are promoted directly from the unit. Rangers led by Rangers, Clans led by their Thanes, etc.
This has a side effect of making it such that units aren't actually much good at using other force types, unless they're very veteran or upper leadership specifically trained to do so.
Which gets you what you see here, mainly mono-type forces led by elites of their type, and assigned together.
