Excellent results, not much to say that hasn't already been said.

So ran across this piece of artwork, apparently based on some old White Dwarf art showing a massive Empire cannon manned by giants or something like that.

Sort of wonder if the Dwarves don't have something similar set up at some of the Karaks, although I would like to see this from Mathilde's perspective if she ever visited wherever this thing is supposed to be.
There's actually something like that out there, Ulric's Thunder

Eh, monofocusing the name on the map utility portion does the spell a little injustice IMO, as names can easily prejudice to a specific use and scope. This spell is just as useful for creating diagrams and models, and for our Order in particular given how magic has been described where you need great understanding and a language with incredible specicifity it seems like it would also be suitable as an aid for teaching certain aspects of magic.

Absolutely agree. This is basically Holograms: The Spell, and that make it useful for so many things. It would have been a huge help when creating the paper on Mathilde's Mystical Matrix, for example.

...The vote's missing the apostrophe. Close enough.

Empire also has Hellhammers. Those are ships straight up from Mass Effect, with giant spinal cannon almost bigger than a ship itself.

I don't think we can make an invisible sword by enchanting it with Shroud of Invisibility.

It'll only be invisible while we're not attacking someone with it.
I'm not sure why you think this. Shroud of invisibility makes something invisible full stop, you don't become visible when attacking someone or anything. You might be mistaking it with Take no Heed?

The real problem with an invisible sword though is that the average wielder also can't see it, that probably isn't as much of a problem for the enchanter though since they'd presumably be able to see the magic of it. Also Mathilde doesn't actually know the Shroud of Invisibility spell so we're not about to start enchanting anything with it any time soon.

U / Shroud of Invisibility: Makes you invisible for up to half a minute.

(The spells are based on Realms of Sorcery)

It's terrible, and I'm feeling so old over the fact that the first thought I had about that cannon was that it couldn't possibly stand structurally sound against the explosion that would propel something that'd fit that bore anywhere.

Something to consider is that although we took Karag Lhune in a day, there were three meat grinders that the dwarves took the brunt of.

This is, basically, unsustainable. There's always more goblins (or skaven) out there, but each dwarf is the next thing to irreplaceable on the scale Mathilde operates. We need to review what we can do to radically change the casualty ratio. We need to be looking at 100:1 ratios or something ludicrous like that.

The big issues here is that no matter how many goblins or skaven die in battle, it doesn't substantially effect their reproduction rate. Unless the reason we don't usually see dwarven females is because important dwarf leaders keep multiple continually pregnant wives hidden away in Ottoman style seraglios, each dead dwarf means that future generations will be smaller as well.

Amusingly, it will probably make it easier to write the paper describing the spell itself.

I wonder if if would make cross-College collaboration to convert spells or techniques from one Wind to another easier, as you can just project the (zoomed in) spell matrix and show how it changes over time, rather than having to describe it or draw static two dimensional diagrams on paper.

On that note, when Maria writes the spell up, it's probably worth getting Maximilian and Johann's help. Castings of Law of Logic and Trial and Error would make it much easier to write an academic paper (and showing them the spell matrix makes it much more likely that the latter would apply), and their assistance would probably also make sure that Mathilde writes it up in such a way that is accessible to the Gold College. The way Gold Wizards think would probably make them good reviewers for an academic paper in general, if only to have someone else there to check the mathematics.

The attrition rate for today was probably not indicative of the average casualty rate from the campaign, since the purpose of this was mainly to acquire our initial foothold. So we couldn't afford to take a more measured approach as that would risk us getting pushed back without a proper base of operations to fall back to.

[] Panoramia

This is a much cooler name. Also fits the naming scheme of WHF.
Edit: seems this isnt a vote for spell name kek

Though I am tempted with those which ibclude Mathilde's name. After all, Okkam's Mindrazor and Melkoth's Mystifying Miasma both exist right? Though theae two spells are Battle Magics, so maybe we should save adding Mathilde's name to a spell when she creates a new Battle magic.

Do we?

This looks like a problem way above our pay grade. We are but a single mid-level wizard, and this is a setting-changing problem.

Putting our name on it is frankly par for the course in the culture we are a part of. Let's let other people get to the tedious job of forgetting we had anything to do with it; if we help them out, the phenomenon is liable to overcorrect and remove us entirely.

As a side note, is the below the map we're using:

On the other hand, Mathilde won't always roll two natural 100s in a single day, assassinating the enemy leader and throwing them into anarchy and then essentially perfectly leading another section of the battlefield.

We still need to seize Karag Nar to secure the Expeditions supply route, and that would also probably be a messy battle, as we don't want to be hit by the orcs sallying from behind, so we're also on the clock. We may need Mathilde to disrupt them then run over to Karag Nar to sabotage in there.

I don't know whether you are joking or not, but in the case you are not - Panoramia is a name of one of the journeymanlings under our care (Jade girl), not vote for a spell name.

IIRC, according to Night's Dark Masters, warhammer vampires often have silver vulnerability, and the dwarves of Karak Eight Peaks probably warred with Strygos as well as traded with them.
Ah, in that case pikes would indeed make sense against vampire knights
I think there is a good reason to publicise this one. It's not something Mathilde needs to hide or keep as an ace in the hole, and having a reputation for both spell innovation and sharing the results would be particularly useful for her.

This spell is particularly nice as it explores part of Ulgu's thematics that the Grey College hasn't focused on much. That helps in two ways. It means that a broader range of people can successfully become Grey Magisters. It may also encourage other Magisters to explore other aspects of Ulgu.

I'm looking forward to seeing if we can build on this spell, making it more like a realm Minimap, for example having it update in real time based on what troops under your command know, rather than needing messengers. That may require things like (very) temporarily enchanted tokens to be given to unit commanders or scouts, or for the spell to be cast on the officers and scouts at the beginning of a battle/engagement.
Being Relatively Simple helps a lot for its utility, since the next freestanding illusion effect is Illusion at Fiendishly Complex.

Having it update in realtime is the really really hard part though, it has to gather information somehow, but Ulgu doesn't seem known for scrying or mind reading, though it IS in theme, theres no spells for it.

You can really tell what Teclis meant the Colleges for when you find that almost all spells at Fiendishly Complex and up are almost all directly combat relevant.
Can I convince anyone to change their votes? We are currently not interacting with any non-dwarf. Wolf is already our familiar so we will have plenty of interaction with him over the coming days/months/years anyway, even if it isn't on screen.
Uh, not quite. Prioritizing your familiar is not something you 'do later', either you keep them in mind and attend to them regularly, or you put them at a lower priority to social connections.

Which is FINE, but do recognize that instead of "we'll deal with that later."
I'm actually intrigued by Wulfhart. He's an Ulrican holy knight, so normally he should object to wizards on religious grounds, but apparently he works with ambermanlings quite well .
Ulricans IIRC, don't object to wizards on religious grounds, they just think you should use your thews instead of cheating.
Amber magic enhances your thews, so its mostly fine.

Mathilde uses thews to kill so she's a bit better off than pure casty wizards.
Did King Ironhammer really split up the forces completely by type or were those just whatever unit type was most prominent on each front?
In any case, he would have been better served with a less lopsided force distribution. Something for Mathilde to keep in mind. Especially at the Hangar, but probably also the Highways. Though I can't currently find any information on who actually we're the primary Dwarf forces at the Highways.
By the way, where did the surviving Slayers end up after finishing off the Trolls? And who lead the Thunderers into that ill-fated meat grinder?
I'd note that there are practical reasons for lopsided force distributions: familiarity of command.

So a little look into medieval style warfare...much of the leadership of professional military units are promoted directly from the unit. Rangers led by Rangers, Clans led by their Thanes, etc.

This has a side effect of making it such that units aren't actually much good at using other force types, unless they're very veteran or upper leadership specifically trained to do so.

Which gets you what you see here, mainly mono-type forces led by elites of their type, and assigned together.
