Speaking of Dum again, maybe we'll be lucky -- maybe the Runemasters there will have some way of securing and handling the Chaos artifact? They are highly experienced at fighting Chaos for ages and ages.

If so, I want to reach Dum first. And get their trust and all. And get them to help seal up and secure the Chaos artifact, after we steal it.

[ ] Ranging far ahead of the convoy
Better scouted than sorry.
[ ] Use Rite of Way for the worst patches of rough terrain
What Rite of Way was made for.
[ ] Attempt to make contact with the Dolgan
We need the cows.
[ ] Attempt to make contact with the Yusak
If we're lucky we can get more food. If we're less lucky we can at least get a non-aggression pact. Worst case scenario we get some intel on the tribe whose territory we will be passing through and has the highest chance of knowing what's going on at Dum.

Of course, the most palatable ally would be a Yusak who turned on the Chaos Gods but depending on local politics, our overwhelming firepower could potentially be very tempting for any tribe. So long as we get to stay in the back, we could potentially influence a fight massivelly at relatively lower risk than facing an enemy alone. Of course, whether there is such opportunity is unknown for now, but we know that the first time we met the Dolgan, we could ask them to attack other tribes.

The way I see it, it makes meeting tribes an informative choice. Of course, I'd rather meet the Yusak first if possible to inform any decision we take with the Dolgan but it might not be possible to do this without being noticed by the Dolgan themselves.

While the idea has merit remember we dont know if the Yusak turned on the Chaos Gods(I hardly doubt that).
They lost favor, meaning they are in a bad position but doesnt mean they dont worhsip them anymore.
Still it may open options so Im totally for scouting them.

@BoneyM, the last time we were in the neighborhood (Heh. Neighborhood. Horses. I crack me up.), you mentioned that we couldn't contact the Yusak without the Dolgan knowing that we did. Is that still true?

It's still true, but it's a lot less likely to cause suspicion now that you have the very good reason of being there to deliver a message of 'if you see me comin', better step aside; a lotta men didn't, a lotta men died'.

It's more than that, honestly. Thinking about it a little more it comes completely out of nowhere if you only read the threadmarks, or even if you just happened to skip the wrong parts of the huge amounts of discussion this quest generates.

That's true. I'll eyeball it a while and see if an elegant way to do it occurs to me.

We need to focus on priorities, our safety margin is gone. So, at the base, this means preserving our mobility and power. So contact with the dolgan and preventing strain on the steam wagons. After that, I like the scouting far ahead option- it has some overlap with getting to know the last councilor better, and some with learning more about the disfavored tribe, but most importantly it keeps us on top of surprises.

Two actions casting rite of way, one scouting far ahead, one making contact with the dolgan for food. The last two synergize as well, being with our scouts when they come in contact with dolgan scouts. And I'll hope for wizard or dwarf cameos to bulk out the wordcount if we spend two actions casting.

I'm not sure if you didn't see mine or you disagree with it, but to repeat:

If we end up in a fight at Karag Dum there's a real possibility of someone drinking from the cup (potentially triggering it to break and disappear) to power themselves up for the fight.

This would make them more of a threat and potentially prevent us claiming it.
I ignored it, because I disagree that this is a credible threat. We don't know where any number of literally uncountable gribblies are, and screwing ourselves over to nullify this particular threat - which has no reason to be any more relevant than any of the many, many other threats - is a mistake. It's extremely unlikely to be relevant until we make it relevant.

On a slightly different note, it's interesting to me how until Mathilde mentioned a solution to the food problem, everyone was sure that we ought to turn back. Even Borek had his mind changed:
"At least forty tons of meat per steam-wagon," Borek says, a hint of hope re-entering his voice. "That quintuples our range. If we can get enough cows, that's more than enough to reach Karag Dum and for the journey back."
He regained hope - he'd thought that was the Expedition over. I suspect that we may have been making a mistake by voting to continue, until the food solution was proposed.

I'm gonna go ahead and argue strongly in favor of spending at least two actions on Rite of Way. With Gotrek dead, every bit of wear and tear on the steam wagons brings them closer to irreparable failure - and losing more of the steam tanks to steppe terrain would mean far less margin of error in combat, in descending again, and in our food supply.

Other than that, Mathilde has to meet with the Dolgan - she was the one who originally negotiated for food, and we can't take any unnecessary risks with our food situation right now.

Between scouting and doing the heist now, I think it makes more sense to do the theft on our way out. So tentatively, my current proposed vote is:

[ ] Use Rite of Way for the worst patches of rough terrain
[ ] Use Rite of Way for the moderately difficult ground
[ ] Attempt to make contact with the Dolgan
[ ] Ranging far ahead of the convoy

New additions to the update:

After properly washing the blood from your hands, you had spent some time considering the problem that the other Councillors are already wrestling with, and had come up with an elegant solution, and then had spent some time atop the Volans with a piece of measured string while trying to keep the words 'Mookery of Death' out of your head.

- My compliments to a particularly creative thread contributor who hit upon the Mockery of Death solution, without which this would have been a very different update.

I'm thinking we might want to talk to Borek again, as it seems he's not really given any of the other members an idea about what recognition keys he can use to get the dwarves to allow him in (assuming they're actually still around) it might be that it's because they're only applicable to his person or something. But as is if he dies before we get there we're in a tough spot.

My read is that he still wanted to go on, but thought there was no way he'd be convincing anyone else.

To kick off this vote, there is only one word that seems appropriate: Cowabunga.

[x] Ranging far ahead of the convoy
[x] Use Rite of Way for the worst patches of rough terrain
[x] Attempt to make contact with the Dolgan
[x] Attempt to make contact with the Yusak

[X] Use Rite of Way for the worst patches of rough terrain
[X] Use Rite of Way for the moderately difficult ground

These will increase the speed of the convoy, that means less food required, less danger of threats catching up and presumably less maintenance required

[X] Attempt to make contact with the Dolgan
[X] Attempt to make contact with the Yusak

Meeting up with the local tribes. Important both for information gathering (scouting) and securing our food supply.

I wanted to scout aheas as well but I will put my trust on the knights, better to focus on RoW to minimize any chance of problem with the landships.
