Okay but have we considered that the Dwarfs might just be smug pricks who don't want to acknowledge that a human can be fantastic?

That is an option, you know.
Perhaps, if you want the Dwarfs to aknowledge that humans can be great despite their faults, you should extend them the same courtesy first?

Huh, the author managed to cram the enjoyment of an entire chapter into only a hundred words or so.

Well played @BoneyM

Indeed. I am very exited for the next update to tease us as we see nothing of this till the expedtion ends.

Wait, but if the source of information was Ranald himself due to the Protector Coin then... then, what, did Ranald brag to Thorgrim about Mathilde... and end up getting a "That one's going into the book!" response?

Guess he shouldn't have made that joke about stealing a Dawi soul. He didn't think they'd take him seriously.

That... sounds way to true.

I say that with greatest affection. I am here after all.

There are many things that can be said with affection to those one knows but perhaps should not shout into the marketplace thinking no one will be insulted.

Yes but how does that leads to a human doing good things being declared not human anymore rather than erasing the shame?

Because nothing can erase that shame so they just decided to place her in a category with less shame ('only' that of the Dawi Zhar). I don't think this was a conscious decision, they simply could not reconcile someone being both 'umgi' and so honored in their eyes. Does that show a pro dwarf bias, certainly, does that bias make sense given their history and psychology, I would argue also yes. The decision is not morally right, but it is logically consistent with what you would expect of very old, very conservative dwarf priests.

like, dwarfs don't respect humans, they can like and trust individuals. but we are eternal beardlings to them.

and you don't respect a beardling.
A more apt comparison would be if gorillas suddenly learned to use tools and began to speak.
There are literal special differences between Dawi and Umgi, and for them, we began civilization just a few generations ago.
Edited, with thanks to @Lupercal

There is, this small part of me that wishes the reality of it is that Ranald tried to use whatever magick inherent in his coin to affect the high king.

And then he gets absolutely stoppered by a giant immaterial wall of "NO" slammed into him from the combined power of the Ancestors, the Throne of Power and the Dragon Crown.

Then he took that personally.

And with that proclamation, Mathilde has finally ensured that her name will live on in history forever, partially due to her many great deeds but mostly as that one edge case that academics will routinely bring up in pointless arguments. I can see it now:

'Dwarves can't become wizards!'
'Well actually...'
'THAT WAS A SPECIAL CASE AND YOU KNOW IT!'

No they are saying humans can't be this good so it must be a dwarf. The whole thing is a total insult to entire human race.
You're looking at this backwards. It's not about Umgi being shoddy, it's about how the dwarves haven't reclaimed a single hold and Mathilde's rolled up and grabbed two. They're claiming her as a dwarf, because the alternative is confronting that for all of their efforts, someone has apparently been able to do it not once, but twice, and it wasn't them. What would it say about them, they couldn't manage a single one? It would break them.

Wait so, Mathilde has always been a dwarf, apparently. But Mathilde was born among humans and therefore does not have a clan. Mathilde definitely participated in the battle for Karag Lhune. So therefore:

Mathilde is a member of Clan Huzkul, apparently.
Honestly I bet that the moment Belegar hears that we're now formally considered a clanless dwarf he'll adopt us into Clan Angrund.

Yeah whatever. I was explaining why SV goes for the power everytime and was probably being too cute with it but perhaps a bit thicker skin might do you some good as well.

Our refresh button can't repel thread madness of this magnitude!

Even if this is a joke I am here for these consequences.
Heeeeey

(last one of the year, I promise)
Still not enough for Kragg's Character Sheet.
Kragg Doesn't Noticeably Disapprove of This(+100 relationship)

But still, true. Call it halfway there.
Hmmm... Gunnars or Kragg? I think it could be Gunnars, but Kragg is pretty knowledgeable as well, and would fit the repute bit better than Gunnars.

Por Que No Los Dos? At least as an excuse for Thorgrim to not admit to the HUD.

"Our Karak disappeared !"
"Have you tried turning it off and on again ?"

She really is the mountain wizard: She made a mountain disappear foes, and she made another mountain reappear.

Mathilde is an Excellent Insulator of Mountains.

Renouncing citizenship of the Empire means renouncing your knighthood, your fief, and your position in the Grey Order.
But can we keep our titles? :p

The Book Clan: "No poaching, we saw her first!"

My theory is that Ranald decided to shenanigan.
• With the Protector facet of the coin on while Mathilde brings back Vlag, Ranald has an opening to contact Thorgrim directly.
• Ranald (the Deceiver) is able to lie perfectly such that his belief in the words is beyond doubt.
• Ranald, having decided to personally send Thorgrim the message about Mathilde, takes the opportunity to lie about Mathilde being a stolen dwarf soul, thus potentially giving her access to dawi-eyes-only intel and setting up for future shenanigans.

I feel like Mathilde would love being someone who gets brought up in that sort of situation.

I was there for that you know. But we don't usually see things from outside perspectives normally. It has happened... twice from memory, when we saw the inside of Thorgrim's headspace after K8P Bowl and Kragg's during the reclamation.
I think somebody commented we saw the letter Emperor wrote to release Battle Wizards as well.
