I tried my best to imitate Boney's writing style and also in particular have Egrimm be suspicious in a way that could possibly actually be innocent. It was a lot easier than it should have been.

It might be wishful thinking on my end that Mathilde will be responsible for the Foundation, because I feel like this is a very precise intersection of her skills, liable to get a really high result.
It read like something almost but not quite entirely like Boney's writing.

I'd lay the blame for your ease of writing Egrimm as 'suspicious in a way that could possibly actually be innocent' while emulating Boney's style firmly at Boney's feet. He's characterised Egrimm in his own voice too well.

The consequence of that being:
'Egrimm in Boney's voice' is 'suspicious in a way that could possibly actually be innocent'
----

Amazing omake - and this is a personal take on Mathilde's perspective - but before creating such an enchantment I can imagine her asking Ranald nudge away any negative consequences for the attempt she is about to make, and with one hand on her belt buckle, to Valaya, that she will continue to have her hearthfire protect Mathilde from dhar, that what Mathilde is about to try is not some unforgivable transgression.

Just assembling what we know about the Kislevite network.
  • The elves occupy the site of future Erengrad around -3,500 IC. This is stated to be their northern most settlement in the Old World. Presumably the nexuses there and at the site of Kislev City are built sometime not that long after then.
  • The Gospodar crossed the World's Edge Mountains in 1497 IC under the command of Miska the Slaughterer and her father, taking Praag that year.
  • They found Kislev City and proclaim their Tzardom 1527 IC under the rule of her daughter, after she goes north to fight Chaos.
  • They conquer Norvard and rename it Erengrad in 1529 IC
  • Kislev then builds it's three nexus loop between Kilsev City, Praag, and Erengrad
  • This would probably have required building a new nexus at Praag as the elves didn't get that far north
  • Tzar Alexandr Njevski founds Castle Alexandronov around 1600 IC. He's apparnetly inspired by a vision of the legendary original Boris Ursa, Miska's father, first ruler of the Gospodar, and builds it in the place he was shown in his vision, atop a tall cliff that had a spring at the top. Zlata told us it was founded to add a fourth nexus to increase the resilience of the loop. Similar to Praag, this is north of where the elves colonised.
What I think this tells us is that the early Ice Witches seem to have been very, very good. In under a century they reverse engineer how nexuses work well enough to take control of them, construct first one new nexus at Praag to build the loop initially, and instructions to two elven ones to establish their three nexus loop and then build a second new nexus and add it to the loop.

That means the modern Ice Witches have had more time to reverse engineer their predecessors' work than it took those predecessors to reverse engineer the elven nexuses and design and build their own version in the first place.

We don't know if they necessarily made an entirely new nexus or if they were working with something already there. But either way it is impressive.

I will repeat my hope that we may get more insight in how Rune A mixes with Capstone B, and whether Storage X fits into Foundation Y, and so on.

For the next waystone we make, we might straight-up get told "this component can't go with this other one", which would be good for streamlining the votes more.
That seems like a terrible idea to me, flat out making it so there are only a handful of possible options while still making the thread cludge them together over and over, through months.

That wouldn't streamline.

It might make the votes have less possible options but it seems like it would only pointlessly drag things out, while we work out what those options are.

Making players more and more frustrated feeling like these votes are pointless.

I one day want to do Nehekhara network with the coin and see if Randal uses his hinted that he is one of their gods to get us Settra. Because I think the situation would be hilarious with the tomb kings trying to join.

I wonder what Dwarfs think about Ulrican? The entire cult seems to be based around striving for an ideal but not ever really getting close to it.

They don't really get the significance of wolves and winter because they're all 'have you tried being underground? that works for me' but they're nodding along through all the self-sufficiency stuff until they realize the Ulricans mean on the level of an individual instead of a community and then they're just very confused and write it all off as umgi nonsense.

I'm with the dwarves on this one. Wolves run in packs for a reason.

I expect that if "Build a Waystone" wins another vote, it will be as part of a plan where the action is for a specific purpose and so the vote will only invite the people strictly necessary for that model. That'll limit the potential choices on the subvote pretty rigidly.

"Build a Waystone: All" is, I think, a winner only for the first attempt.

We have finally found a use for the Cathayan Jet talisman. When we have filled up a river with magic and want pull out the winds well leaving the Duar it is perfect.

But you are still purposely creating Dhar for the first time,
I like the story, but this would be more like the fourth time if I recall correctly. As such I doubt Mathilde would feel much trepidation if it's for a good cause and she has a 'don't go to jail' card.

1. Crushing Gretel's miscast.

2. Snake Juice testing. (confirming what would happen when exposed to an evil moon even though the the expected result was dhar)

3. Skaven weapons testing. (ratling gun mechanism)

Who is Mathilde secretly a sleeper agent of?

1. Master Economist Wilhelmina.

2. Lovely Lahmians.
3. Surprisingly, Mork.
4. Ranald, Ranald, Ranald, and Ranald.
5. Clan Eshin, yes yes!
6. Settra of Many Titles.

I see. Stirland was only the first step. Soon, Marrienburg, and then, the world! :drevil:
The funny thing is, Mathilde has kind of inadvertently championed Wilhelmina's economic ambitions in incredible ways time and again.

From the moment she captured almost the entirety of the Stirlandian League, giving Wilhelmina the chance to create a state-sanctioned economic powerhouse from the fresh corpse of an existing economic (cancerous) powerhouse.

The establishment of much better law and order in much of Stirland with the Watch.

Helping to purge much of Sylvannia and then the capture of Drakenhof and the destruction of Castle Drakenhof.

Mathilde being the largest single shareholder in the EIC who is not only a helpful and cooperative partner, but one who basically invests all of her profits into the EIC whenever she stops by. This also gives competitors pause as their competition has a storied Grey Wizard at its highest level of leadership, making anyone who would think to play dirty think twice.

The reclamation of Karak Eight Peaks bringing lots of economic opportunity to the EIC.

Killing Alkharad and his College of Necromancy, saving Roswita's life, and calling in the bulk of the Imperial Battle Mages into Stirland to start wrecking the vampires and undead of Sylvannia bit by bit. All the while, Roswita's unrelenting war against Sylvania has been expensive, with those expenses somewhat going straight into the EIC's profits (and resulting in a safer province).

Wilhelmina then takes the opportunity to convince the king of Barak Varr to join with Zhufbar to build a canal from the Black Water to Stirland, with the EIC stepping up to assist in its construction where possible.

We-silk, the economic avalanche that will hit the Old World's markets Any Day Now (TM).

A lot of trade coming in from the Dark Lands now that Death Pass is effectively save and safe passage all the way to Barak Varr is guaranteed from there.

Mathilde doing a major favor to the new Tsar of Kislev, and getting a canal in return that will link the rivers of Kislev and the Empire.

And more to come. Mathilde is adhering to the Vow of Poverty by funneling the astounding amounts of money she's making into Wilhelmina's hands to grow the economic juggernaut that is the EIC.

The funny thing is, Mathilde has kind of inadvertently championed Wilhelmina's economic ambitions in incredible ways time and again.

Yeah, I was thinking about this recently, every time the EIC has just finished digesting their gains and about to settle into a more normal growth pattern Mathilde hops by and drops another hot tip that leads the EIC to another goldmine on the horizon they need to start working towards exploiting.

With the best part being the way it just happens in passing. The association with the EIC is a great part of the quest I think, It adds a lot for showcasing the impact Mathilde has on the world.

@Boney I am kinda curious what Roswitha thinks about Wilhelmina and the EIC? A necessary evil? A annoying political player in stirland? A helpful economic powerhouse?
I'm not sure we should tag boney to ask them about stuff other people know about other people outside of the bounds of the quest mechanics.

'Ask them and find out'?

I can't imagine it being anything less than a helpful economic powerhouse. When Roswita was selling taxation rights and plots of land on the Hunter's Hills to fund further war efforts against Sylvannia, the EIC bought them up. And unlike most businesses, Roswita can feel safe in the fact that the EIC isn't an economic tumor or cheating her out of taxes owed. Bonus points for the fact that the EIC is very much a "long-term growth and good service" kind of business, meaning that a lot of the money paid to the EIC is being invested into Stirland and its trading partners.

While the EIC's size and growth are probably a bit worrying, as long as it continues to be a patriotic business that rapidly reinvests its profits into the economies of those it does business with, it's less a "devil you know" and more like a "scary-powerful actor that you're glad is on your side".

Like, keep in mind that the bulk of the EIC's ownership consists of the best members of her father's privy council: a storied hero of Stirland and the Karaz Ankor who personally saved her life and called in the magical cavalry to decisively help her pacification of Sylvania, the old friend of her father that proved to be an economic genius who brought Stirland back from the brink of economic disaster, and a genuinely kind and patriotic Baron in great standing with basically everyone. That the EIC is going well out of its way to prove itself a trustworthy business partner to a number of major Karaks shows how reliable the EIC is.

Might be interesting to see some of the bad stuff that the EIC is probably doing. It's a huge and rich organisation, so there will be a decent amount of corruption and grift in it.

Boney is generally happy to answer these when they are somewhat irrelevant to Mathildes doings. We have long removed ourselves from Roswithas and Wilhelminas area of influence and the answer to the question doesn't really give us any advantages so it's ok.

The EIC, like most merchant ventures, doesn't really own much actual land. And every feudal lord knows that that's where the power is and always will be...right?

Probably a lot less than you think. The EIC's core values are basically "don't put profits over the wellbeing of the people and state you do business in/with" and "do NOT be anything less than completely honest and accurate when dealing with dwarves". At the end of the day, the EIC fundamentally believes that if you're making profits at the expense of the people that keep you alive/safe/in business, then you're doing it wrong.

The EIC's general style is to crush (or buy up/incorporate) its competition through smart, fast, and forward-thinking business strategy, generally involving providing the best and most reliable prices/services around. While that would be cause for concern in most capitalist markets, "Don't Skin the Sheep" is a pretty strong motivator and value to have when you live in a Death World. And with long-term profits and investments in mind, it also makes sense to keep prices reasonable so that local economies can themselves grow, increasing future revenue.

I'm sure there are individual agents of EIC who are skimming profits.
But having a powerful shadowmancer at the top who is not only known for personally killing the previous Stirlandian merchant conglomerate, but also has taken personal time to hammer home not to be idiots like them, probably does lot to curb institutional corruption from forming.
