You linger in Wurtbad long enough to catch up with Wilhelmina, hear the latest set of disappointments her sons have inflicted on her, and pass on a few tips. The tidal wave of silver in the hands of returning Stirlanders is definitely the sort of tip she can use. All those brave souls will be wanting land to settle down on, and it just so happens that an Elector Countess had been trying to sell land for long enough that she'd dropped the price a few notches. If she was aware of the triumphant return of Codrin and his ilk she'd know to keep a hold of it a little longer, but it just so happens that she had decided against retaining the services of the stunningly talented Grey Wizard who happened to have that information. You indulge in just a little schadenfreude as Wilhelmina gobbles up vast tracts of the Hunter's Hills, which are soon to take a massive leap in demand, and not one to miss a trick, Wilhelmina also strikes a deal with the Stirland mint to supply high-purity Dwarven silver for them to debase into rather more than the sixty coins Dwarves would make of it. Land for gold, silver for land, gold for silver - a level of alchemy beyond the arts of the Gold College.
Also, this is totally why insider trading is illegal in America. The massive amount of wealth that can be generated from having insider knowledge about what will happen before anyone else is just ridiculous. And it gives an almost insurmountable advantage to the holder of the information.

The EIC just made a tremendous profit off of the Countess, and will then make a profit off of the profit by trading the silver to the Stirland Mint. If EIC was an economic Kraken before, it will become an ouroboros with the upcoming deals.

Abusing her divine patronage, network of financial friends, advisor position and semi-willing minions on the other hand…

His swordsmanship could have been better.

Roswita's position seems to be built upon the assumption that Wilhelmina, Anton and Mathilda are friendly towards her. So long as the EIC remains a pro-Elector Count faction she can take a lot of risks with the economy and rely on the EIC to help her out if things go wrong. Letting her focus on pacifying the undead infested east while her good friends handle the west for her. There is even some justification for it. Wilhelmina was helping the Van Hal family long before she became an Advisor. Mathilde didn't make any fuss when leaving, even handed over the entire info network and Abelheim's things without complaint.
…guessing her new diplomat is about as 'skilled' as her steward. That or she refuses to believe that such fine and loyal servants of the Empire would hold a grudge.
And Mathilde is slowly transforming into a dorf.

Oh dear.

You may be onto something.

"Why would the Dwarves risk it?"

"Dwarves are naturally resistant to magic."

"Oh, that explains it. A perfect fit, then. I wish her well."

She just might be too naive for this world, clearly dividing everything into three categories: "gribblies", "traitors" and "upstanding citizens"

And her fear of mages is probably less 'prejudice' and more 'clinical phobia' - which is a realistic professional risk for a witch hunter.

I. Huh. So...am i just underestimating the favor drain from lessons and stuff on most magisters and above? Because while this was a big thing, it also seems like this sort of favor gain from papers and the like would mean that 9-favor items like the seed of regrowth were a lot more common than i'd assumed they were o_O

Also god the decisions are tough this time around...

not sure on marriage vote, but for now some approval jobvoting:

Given the costs to pick up magical skills and knowledge I expect most of them are to busy spending it on furthering their magical education. The vast majority aren't going to want to actually be adventurers.

IIRC, the more mundane lessons available in the Grey College were purchasable in favours or gold, but the exact figure escapes me.

I put on my dwarf hat and did some spelunking.

I'll work out a 'College favour' system that can be spent on lessons or other things, but about 50-100 gc per works a ballpark.

Any one else up for dropping a big bag of gold on mundane lessons with the college? Improve our writing skills, learn Anoqeyon (I figure even a magical language probably counts closer to the 'more mundane' side of lessons as it's not active magic use of any kind.

Hm, while this might be tangentially related to the possible weapon discussion, I was wondering if we were going to commission a staff? And if so how would we go about doing so? If this is too close to the weapon discussion I apologize in advance and hope this doesn't trigger any problems in the thread.

I would love to drop money on the College to learn as much as we can. The tricky thing is, however, we have to make sure not to spend too much money because a chunk of it shouldn't leave the Karak Anzor because that's the loop hole we choose.

You have my vote, there's a number of classes that would be excellent additions to Mathilde's skillset.

You know, it strikes me that the plan some of us had with rubbing our successes and effectiveness in Roswita's face to make her regret firing us might not work as intended.

"So you're saying that after letting my father's Spymaster go, she went on to almost singlehandedly turn the taking of two Karaks into unmitigated successes, alongside our own former soldiers?"
"That is true my lady."
"So she helped humanity's oldest and most loyal allies retake their old lands, opened up trade routes to our east and made sure the people we no longer pay did something useful instead of turning to banditry or worse. Sounds like a good thing we let her go do that instead of staying here."

No grudges? Good job we're not picking up any Dwarfy traits, then. :V
I mean, we do have a slight grudge against Sigmar...

The money on Mathilde's charsheet is divided between Dwarf funds and free funds, similar to how it was once divided between money she earned legitimately and money she embezzled.

I'm honestly not sure what I want to see, so I'm going to go with my gut.

I am pretty sure the college won't really have a problem with us dropping a bunch of money on them to pay for lessons or the like.

I'd say we should spend less then the 5% tithe we gave. Which means we have a spending ability of at most 700 gold unless my math was off.

You have two "routes", for lack of a better classification. The first is the Grey College, in which a staff is designed to aid the usage of magic. The second is having the dwarves construct a staff, which will be inert to the winds but have a number of features of the dwarves choosing.

Ehhh... yeah, pretty much. The EIC is basically taking every single gold coin that the Countess is letting fall from her purse strings in the effort to pacify Sylvania. Which has made them a monster in terms of being an economic powerhouse in western Stirland, which is the wealthiest part of Stirland. The only thing better they could do would be to exert some measure of control over the gold mine found in Drakenhof.

But basically, at this point, the EIC is the premier economic powerhouse in Stirland, and with a little bit of work, they could become indispensable to Stirland which makes it all that more difficult to remove.

Though, eh, "difficult to remove" is never the same thing as impossible if you're sufficiently ruthless about it. They may call themselves "Elector Counts", but they're basically kings in their own province.

If a merchant organization ever truly starts to get out of control, "arrest them all and confiscate all their holdings to compensate for their crimes" is always an option for your Elector Count on the go. It's basically how the EIC was founded if you recall, ripping up the last generation of cartel up by the roots. It helps if "their crimes" are real... but is by no means necessary if your Intrigue Advisor is on the ball.
