Speaking just for myself I don't find the economics aspects fun, it''s not a deal breaker or anything, I would just prefer to read more about weird stuff and arcane intrigues than the price of sugar in Cathay.

In my defence, my position was more 'I think these two would make a cute couple, we should introduce them and see if they get along' rather than 'this is the OTP, accept it heretics or burn!'
She would have been pointed in our direction pretty quickly by the dwarves, assuming Gustav somehow overlooked that we had it.
So be sure to check up on her and whatnot every 5 years. But I imagine that most people who have power are going to enjoy it and not want to lose it.
You notice there are other candidates for this role? Other candidates for the role are Prince Gotri, Engineer, and Kraggi Senior, Runesmith.
They won't be called "court wizard", but if we don't take over the role then one of them will be the guy who gets assigned Learning-related tasks and research projects. Weird stuff will get brought to them first, not us.

Anton needs help in making critical decisions and we know we're pretty capable in that sense. Plus I personally IRL married my best friend, so I have some biases in this direction anyways.
As for K8P, keeping the Karak secured from enemies is the single most important thing we could do, but my personal second is magic research bc we are the master of unconventional solutions to unconventional problems.
